There exist three main approaches to reduction associated to canonical Lie group actions on a symplectic manifold, namely, foliation reduction, introduced by Cartan, Marsden-Weinstein reduction, and optimal reduction, introduced by the authors. When the action is free, proper, and admits a momentum map these three approaches coincide. The goal of this paper is to study the general case of a symplectic action that does not admit a momentum map and one needs to use its natural generalization, a cylinder valued momentum map introduced by Condevaux, Dazord, and Molino. In this case it will be shown that the three reduced spaces mentioned above do not coincide, in general. More specifically, the Marsden-Weinstein reduced spaces are not symplectic but Poisson and their symplectic leaves are given by the optimal reduced spaces. Foliation reduction produces a symplectic reduced space whose Poisson quotient by a certain Lie group associated to the group of symmetries of the problem equals the Marsden-Weinstein reduced space. We illustrate these constructions with concrete examples, special emphasis being given to the reduction of a magnetic cotangent bundle of a Lie group in the situation when the magnetic term ensures the non-existence of the momentum map for the lifted action. The precise relation of the cylinder valued momentum map with group valued momentum maps for Abelian Lie groups is also given.
We describe the structure of the Lie groups endowed with a left-invariant symplectic form, called symplectic Lie groups, in terms of semi-direct products of Lie groups, symplectic reduction and principal bundles with affine fiber. This description is particularly nice if the group is Hamiltonian, that is, if the left canonical action of the group on itself is Hamiltonian. The principal tool used for our description is a canonical affine structure associated with the symplectic form. We also characterize the Hamiltonian symplectic Lie groups among the connected symplectic Lie groups. We special…
We develop the structure theory of symplectic Lie groups based on the study of their isotropic normal subgroups. The article consists of three main parts. In the first part we show that every symplectic Lie group admits a sequence of subsequent symplectic reductions to a unique irreducible symplectic Lie group. The second part concerns the symplectic geometry of cotangent symplectic Lie groups and the theory of Lagrangian extensions of flat Lie groups. In the third part of the article we analyze the existence problem for Lagrangian normal subgroups in nilpotent symplectic Lie groups.
We give a new characterization of flat affine manifolds in terms of an action of the Lie algebra of classical infinitesimal affine transformations on the bundle of linear frames. We characterize flat affine symplectic Lie groups using symplectic étale affine representations and as a consequence of this, we show that a flat affine symplectic Lie group with bi-invariant symplectic connection contains a nontrivial one parameter subgroup formed by central translations. We give two methods for constructing flat affine symplectic Lie groups, thus obtaining all those having bi-invariant symplectic co…
We use the techniques of integration of Poisson manifolds into symplectic Lie groupoids to build symplectic resolutions (= desingularizations) of the closure of a symplectic leaf. More generally, we show how Lie groupoids can be used to lift singularities, in particular when one imposes a compatibility condition with an additional structure given by a multi-vector field.
$k$-Para-Kähler Lie algebras are a generalization of para-Kähler Lie algebras $(k=1)$ and constitute a subclass of $k$-symplectic Lie algebras. In this paper, we show that the characterization of para-Kähler Lie algebras as left symmetric bialgebras can be generalized to $k$-para-Kähler Lie algebras leading to the introduction of two new structures which are different but both generalize the notion of left symmetric algebra. This permits also the introduction of generalized $S$-matrices. We determine then all the $k$-symplectic Lie algebras of dimension $(k+1)$ and all the six dimensional 2-pa…
This article addresses the problem of developing an extension of the Marsden- Weinstein reduction process to symplectic Lie algebroids, and in particular to the case of the symplectic cover of a fiberwise linear Poisson structure, whose reduction process is the analogue to cotangent bundle reduction in the context of Lie algebroids.
Several types of generically-nondegenerate Poisson structures can be effectively studied as symplectic structures on naturally associated Lie algebroids. Relevant examples of this phenomenon include log-, elliptic, $b^k$-, scattering and elliptic-log Poisson structures. In this paper we discuss topological obstructions to the existence of such Poisson structures, obtained through the characteristic classes of their associated symplectic Lie algebroids. In particular we obtain the full obstructions for surfaces to carry such Poisson structures.
In this review paper, we present several results on central extensions of the Lie algebra of symplectic (Hamiltonian) vector fields, and compare them to similar results for the Lie algebra of (exact) divergence free vector fields. In particular, we comment on universal central extensions and integrability to the group level.
Symplectic manifolds which are homogeneous spaces of Poisson-Lie groups are studied in this paper. We show that these spaces are, under certain assumptions, covering spaces of dressing orbits of the Poisson-Lie groups which act on them. The effect of the Poisson induction procedure on such spaces is also examined, thus leading to an interesting generalization of the notion of homogeneous space. Some examples of homogeneous spaces of Poisson-Lie groups are discussed in the light of the previous results.
In this paper we determine conditions of existence of an induced Riemannian structure on the symplectic quotient of a symplectic and Riemannian manifold following the action of a Lie group acting upon it in a hamiltonian way with equivariant momentum mapping.
We investigate Lie algebras endowed with a complex symplectic structure and develop a method, called \emph{complex symplectic oxidation}, to construct certain complex symplectic Lie algebras of dimension $4n+4$ from those of dimension $4n$. We specialize this construction to the nilpotent case and apply complex symplectic oxidation to classify eight-dimensional nilpotent complex symplectic Lie algebras.
We study left invariant contact forms and left invariant symplectic forms on Lie groups. We give the classification of all symplectic structures on nilpotent Lie algebras up the dimension 6.
During the last thirty years, symplectic or Marsden--Weinstein reduction has been a major tool in the construction of new symplectic manifolds and in the study of mechanical systems with symmetry. This procedure has been traditionally associated to the canonical action of a Lie group on a symplectic manifold, in the presence of a momentum map. In this note we show that the symplectic reduction phenomenon has much deeper roots. More specifically, we will find symplectically reduced spaces purely within the Poisson category under hypotheses that do not necessarily imply the existence of a moment…
We study Lie algebras of type I, that is, a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ where all the eigenvalues of the operator ad$_X$ are imaginary for all $X\in \mathfrak{g}$. We prove that the Morse-Novikov cohomology of a Lie algebra of type I is trivial for any closed $1$-form. We focus on locally conformal symplectic structures (LCS) on Lie algebras of type I. In particular we show that for a Lie algebra of type I any LCS structure is of the first kind. We also exhibit lattices for some $6$-dimensional Lie groups of type I admitting left invariant LCS structures in order to produce compact solvmanifold…
We study symplectic (contact) structures on nilmanifolds that correspond to the filiform Lie algebras - nilpotent Lie algebras of the maximal length of the descending central sequence. We give a complete classification of filiform Lie algebras that possess a basis e_1, ..., e_n, [e_i,e_j]=c_{ij}e_{i{+}j} (N-graded Lie algebras). In particular we describe the spaces of symplectic cohomology classes for all even-dimensional algebras of the list. It is proved that a symplectic filiform Lie algebra is a filtered deformation of some N-graded symplectic filiform Lie algebra. But this condition is no…
We show that the leaves of an LA-groupoid which pass through the unit manifold are, modulo a connectedness issue, Lie groupoids. We illustrate this phenomenon by considering the cotangent Lie algebroids of Poisson groupoids thus obtaining an interesting class of symplectic groupoids coming from their symplectic foliations. In particular, we show that for a (strict) Lie 2-group the coadjoint orbits of the units in the dual of its Lie 2-algebra are symplectic groupoids, meaning that the classical Kostant-Kirillov-Souriau symplectic forms on these special coadjoint orbits are multiplicative.
By considering suitable Poisson groupoids, we develop an approach to obtain Lie group structures on (subgroups of) the Poisson diffeomorphism groups of various classes of Poisson manifolds. As applications, we show that the Poisson diffeomorphism groups of (normal-crossing) log-symplectic, elliptic symplectic, scattering-symplectic and cosymplectic manifolds are regular infinite-dimensional Lie groups.
In this paper we describe all the nilradicals of parabolic subalgebras of split real simple Lie algebras admitting symplectic structures. The main tools used to obtain this list are Kostant's description of the highest weight vectors (hwv) of the cohomology of these nilradicals and some necessary conditions obtained for the $\mathfrak g$-hwv's of $H^2(\mathfrak n)$ for a finite dimensional real symplectic nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak n$ with a reductive Lie subalgebra of derivations $\mathfrak g$ acting on it.
The canonical involution of a double (=iterated) tangent bundle may be dualized in different ways to yield relations between the Tulczyjew diffeomorphism, the Poisson anchor associated with the standard symplectic structure on the cotangent space, and the reversal diffeomorphism. We show that the constructions which yield these maps extend very generally to the double Lie algebroids of double Lie groupoids, where they play a crucial role in the relations between double Lie algebroids and Lie bialgebroids.
A $n$-dimensional Lie group $G$ equipped with a left invariant symplectic form $\om^+$ is called a symplectic Lie group. It is well-known that $\om^+$ induces a left invariant affine structure on $G$. Relatively to this affine structure we show that the left invariant Poisson tensor $π^+$ corresponding to $\om^+$ is polynomial of degree 1 and any right invariant $k$-multivector field on $G$ is polynomial of degree at most $k$. If $G$ is unimodular, the symplectic form $\om^+$ is also polynomial and the volume form $\wedge^{\frac{n}2}\om^+$ is parallel. We show also that any left invariant tens…
It is well known that a symplectic Lie algebra admit a left symmetric product. In this work, we study the case where this product is Novikov, we show that the left-symmetric product associated to the symplectic Lie algrbra is Novikov if and only if it is associative. In this case the symplectic Lie algebra is called symplectic Novikov Lie algebra(SNLA). We show that any SNLA is completely reducible two-step solvable. The classification of $4$-dimensional and nilpotent $6$-dimensional, also some methods for building large classes of examples are presented. Finally, we give a geometric study of …
These notes are an introduction to symplectic groupoids and the double structures associated with them. The treatment is intended to lie about midway between the original account of Coste, Dazord and Weinstein, which relied on effective use of the symplectic structures, and the account in my 2005 book, which showed, on the level of Poisson groupoids, that the basic results of the theory follow from `categorical' compatibility conditions between the associated Lie algebroid and Lie groupoid structures. The reader needs to know only the most basic ideas of symplectic geometry, Lie groups, and ve…
We classify the finite type (in the sense of E. Cartan theory of prolongations) subalgebras $\mathfrak{h}\subset\mathfrak{sp}(V)$, where $V$ is the symplectic 4-dimensional space, and show that they satisfy $\mathfrak{h}^{(k)}=0$ for all $k>0$. Using this result, we reduce the problem of classification of graded transitive finite-dimensional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ of symplectic vector fields on $V$ to the description of graded transitive finite-dimensional subalgebras of the full prolongations $\mathfrak{p}_1^{(\infty)}$ and $\mathfrak{p}_2^{(\infty)}$, where $\mathfrak{p}_1$ and $\mathfr…
We describe the deformation cohomology of a symplectic groupoid, and use it to study deformations via Moser path methods, proving a symplectic groupoid version of the Moser Theorem. Our construction uses the deformation cohomologies of Lie groupoids and of multiplicative forms, and we prove that in the symplectic case, deformation cohomology of both the underlying groupoid and of the symplectic groupoid have de Rham models in terms of differential forms. We use the de Rham model, which is intimately connected to the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff double complex, to compute deformation cohomology in sev…
A special symplectic Lie group is a triple $(G,ω,\nabla)$ such that $G$ is a finite-dimensional real Lie group and $ω$ is a left invariant symplectic form on $G$ which is parallel with respect to a left invariant affine structure $\nabla$. In this paper starting from a special symplectic Lie group we show how to ``deform" the standard Lie group structure on the (co)tangent bundle through the left invariant affine structure $\nabla$ such that the resulting Lie group admits families of left invariant hypersymplectic structures and thus becomes a hypersymplectic Lie group. We consider the affine …
We study locally conformal symplectic (LCS) structures of the second kind on a Lie algebra. We show a method to build new examples of Lie algebras admitting LCS structures of the second kind starting with a lower dimensional Lie algebra endowed with a LCS structure and a suitable representation. Moreover, we characterize all LCS Lie algebras obtained with our construction. Finally, we study the existence of lattices in the associated simply connected Lie groups in order to obtain compact examples of manifolds admitting this kind of structure.
This is an announcement of results proved in [GGS1], [GGS2], [C], and [CG] where methods from Lie theory were used as new tools for the study of symplectic Lefschetz fibrations.
The Lie-Poisson analogues of the cotangent bundle and coadjoint orbits of a Lie group are considered. For the natural Poisson brackets the symplectic leaves in these manifolds are classified and the corresponding symplectic forms are described. Thus the construction of the Kirillov symplectic form is generalized for Lie-Poisson groups.
We provide an alternative method for obtaining of compatible Poisson structures on Lie groups by means of the adjoint representations of Lie algebras. In this way, we calculate some compatible Poisson structures on four dimensional and nilpotent six dimensional symplectic real Lie groups. Then using Magri-Morosi's theorem we obtain new bi-Hamiltonian systems with four dimensional and nilpotent six dimensional symplectic real Lie groups as phase spaces.
Shifted symplectic Lie and $L_\infty$ algebroids model formal neighbourhoods of manifolds in shifted symplectic stacks, and serve as target spaces for twisted variants of classical AKSZ topological field theory. In this paper, we classify zero-, one- and two-shifted symplectic algebroids and their higher gauge symmetries, in terms of classical geometric "higher structures", such as Courant algebroids twisted by $Ω^2$-gerbes. As applications, we produce new examples of twisted Courant algebroids from codimension-two cycles, and we give symplectic interpretations for several well known features …
In this note we prove that an analytic symplectic action of a semisimple Lie algebra can be locally linearized in Darboux coordinates. This result yields simultaneous analytic linearization for Hamiltonian vector fields in a neighbourhood of a common zero. We also provide an example of smooth non-linearizable Hamiltonian action with semisimple linear part. The smooth analogue only holds if the semisimple Lie algebra is of compact type. An analytic equivariant b-Darboux theorem for b-Poisson manifolds and an analytic equivariant Weinstein splitting theorem for general Poisson manifolds are also…
We show how to reduce, under certain regularities conditions, a Poisson-Nijenhuis Lie algebroid to a symplectic-Nijenhuis Lie algebroid with nondegenerate Nijenhuis tensor. We generalize the work done by Magri and Morosi for the reduction of Poisson-Nijenhuis manifolds. The choice of the more general framework of Lie algebroids is motivated by the geometrical study of some reduced bi-Hamiltonian systems. An explicit example of reduction of a Poisson-Nijenhuis Lie algebroid is also provided.
We study symplectic structures on characteristically nilpotent Lie algebras (CNLAs) by computing the cohomology space $H^2(\Lg,k)$ for certain Lie algebras $\Lg$. Among these Lie algebras are filiform CNLAs of dimension $n\le 14$. It turns out that there are many examples of CNLAs which admit a symplectic structure. A generalization of a sympletic structure is an affine structure on a Lie algebra.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a pre-symplectic algebroid, and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between pre-symplectic algebroids and symplectic Lie algebroids. This result is the geometric generalization of the relation between left-symmetric algebras and symplectic (Frobenius) Lie algebras. Although pre-symplectic algebroids are not left-symmetric algebroids, they still can be viewed as the underlying structures of symplectic Lie algebroids. %We study three classes of pre-symplectic algebroids in detail. Then we study exact pre-symplectic algebroids and show that the…
We study symplectic structures on filiform Lie algebras -- nilpotent Lie algebras of the maximal length of the descending central sequence. In the present article we classify the Lie algebras with the structure relations of the following form: $$[e_i,e_j]=(j-i)e_{i+j}+\sum_{l{=}1}c_{ij}^l e_{i+j+l}, i+j \le n.$$ In even dimensions the subspace of symplectic Lie algebras has the codimension one.
All factorizable Lie bialgebra structures on complex reductive Lie algebras were described by Belavin and Drinfeld. We classify the symplectic leaves of the full class of corresponding connected Poisson-Lie groups. A formula for their dimensions is also proved.
We show that each triangular Poisson Lie group can be decomposed into Poisson submanifolds each of which is a quotient of a symplectic manifold. The Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer symplectic reduction technique is then used to give a complete description of the symplectic foliation of all triangular Poisson structures on Lie groups. The results are illustrated in detail for the generalized Jordanian Poisson structures on SL(n).
We provide an explicit description of symplectic leaves of a simply connected connected semisimple complex Lie group equipped with the standard Poisson-Lie structure. This sharpens previously known descriptions of the symplectic leaves as connected components of certain varieties. Our main tool is the machinery of twisted generalized minors. They also allow us to present several quasi-commuting coordinate systems on every symplectic leaf. As a consequence, we construct new completely integrable systems on some special symplectic leaves.
Emphasizing the role of Gerstenhaber algebras and of higher derived brackets in the theory of Lie algebroids, we show that the several Lie algebroid brackets which have been introduced in the recent literature can all be defined in terms of Poisson and pre-symplectic functions in the sense of Roytenberg and Terashima. We prove that in this very general framework there exists a one-to-one correspondence between non-degenerate Poisson functions and symplectic functions. We determine the differential associated to a Lie algebroid structure obtained by twisting a structure with background by both …
We present explicit universal strict deformation quantization formulae for actions of Iwasawa subgroups AN of SU(1,n). This answers a question raised by Rieffel.
We study symplectic structures on nilpotent Lie algebras. Since the classification of nilpotent Lie algebras in any dimension seems to be a crazy dream, we approach this study in case of 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras (in this sub-case also, the classification fo the dimension greater than 8 seems very difficult), using not a classification but a description of subfamilies associated with the characteristic sequence. We begin with the dimension $8$, first step where the classification becomes difficult.
We apply methods from strict quantization of solvable symmetric spaces to obtain universal deformation formulae for actions of a class of solvable Lie groups. We also study compatible co-products by generalizing the notion of smash product in the context of Hopf algebras.
We present several large classes of real Banach Lie-Poisson spaces whose characteristic distributions are integrable, the integral manifolds being symplectic leaves just as in finite dimensions. We also investigate when these leaves are embedded submanifolds or when they have Kähler structures. Our results apply to the real Banach Lie-Poisson spaces provided by the self-adjoint parts of preduals of arbitrary $W^*$-algebras, as well as of certain operator ideals.
We give a complete characterization of Hamiltonian actions of compact Lie groups on exact symplectic manifolds with proper momentum maps. We deduce that every Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group on a contractible symplectic manifold with a proper momentum map is globally linearizable.
We present some examples of locally conformal symplectic structures of the first kind on compact nilmanifolds which do not admit Vaisman metrics. One of these examples does not admit locally conformal Kähler metrics and all the structures come from left-invariant locally conformal symplectic structures on the corresponding nilpotent Lie groups. Under certain topological restrictions related with the compactness of the canonical foliation, we prove a structure theorem for locally conformal symplectic manifolds of the first kind. In the non compact case, we show that they are the product of a re…
