We define and study a notion of Gorenstein projective dimension for complexes of left modules over associative rings. For complexes of finite Gorenstein projective dimension we define and study a Tate cohomology theory. Tate cohomology groups have a natural transformation to classical Ext groups. In the case of module arguments, we show that these maps fit into a long exact sequence, where every third term is a relative cohomology group defined for left modules of finite Gorenstein projective dimension.
We define a notion of Gorenstein flat dimension for unbounded complexes over left GF-closed rings. Over Gorenstein rings we introduce a notion of Gorenstein cohomology for complexes; we also define a generalized Tate cohomology for complexes over Gorenstein rings, and we show that there is a close connection between the absolute, the Gorenstein and the generalized Tate cohomology.
We present in the context of Gorenstein homological algebra the notion of a "G-Gorenstein complex" as the counterpart of the classical notion of a Gorenstein complex. In particular, we investigate equivalences between the category of G-Gorenstein complexes of fixed dimension and the G-class of modules.
We introduce Gorenstein silting modules (resp. complexes), and give the relation with the usual silting modules (resp. complexes). We show that Gorenstein silting modules are the module-theoretic counterpart of 2-term Gorenstein silting complexes; and partial Gorenstein silting modules are in bijection with τ_{G}-rigid modules for finite dimensional algebras of finite CM-type. We also give the relation between 2-term Gorenstein silting complexes, t-structures and torsion pair in module categories; and generalise the classical Brenner-Butler theorem to this setting; and characterise the global …
In this paper, we study simplicial complexes whose Stanley-Reisner rings are almost Gorenstein and have $a$-invariant zero. We call such a simplicial complex an almost Gorenstein* simplicial complex. To study the almost Gorenstein* property, we introduce a new class of simplicial complexes which we call uniformly Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. A $d$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ is said to be uniformly Cohen-Macaulay if it is Cohen-Macaulay and, for any facet $F$ of $Δ$, the simplicial complex $Δ\setminus\{F\}$ is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension $d$. We investigate fundamental algebraic…
Gorenstein rings are important to mathematical areas as diverse as algebraic geometry, where they encode information about singularities of spaces, and homotopy theory, through the concept of model categories. In consequence, the study of Gorenstein rings has led to the advent of a whole branch of homological algebra, known as Gorenstein homological algebra. This paper solves one of the open problems of Gorenstein homological algebra by showing that so-called Gorenstein projective resolutions exist over quite general rings, thereby enabling the definition of a Gorenstein version of derived fun…
We introduce and investigate the notion of $\gc$-projective modules over (possibly non-noetherian) commutative rings, where $C$ is a semidualizing module. This extends Holm and Jørgensen's notion of $C$-Gorenstein projective modules to the non-noetherian setting and generalizes projective and Gorenstein projective modules within this setting. We then study the resulting modules of finite $\gc$-projective dimension, showing in particular that they admit $\gc$-projective approximations, a generalization of the maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations of Auslander and Buchweitz. Over a local (noethe…
We show that an iteration of the procedure used to define the Gorenstein projective modules over a commutative ring $R$ yields exactly the Gorenstein projective modules. Specifically, given an exact sequence of Gorenstein projective $R$-modules $G=...\xra{\partial^G_2}G_1\xra{\partial^G_1}G_0\xra{\partial^G_0} ...$ such that the complexes $\Hom_R(G,H)$ and $\Hom_R(H,G)$ are exact for each Gorenstein projective $R$-module $H$, the module $\coker(\partial^G_1)$ is Gorenstein projective. The proof of this result hinges upon our analysis of Gorenstein subcategories of abelian categories.
A commutative noetherian ring with a dualizing complex is Gorenstein if and only if every acyclic complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. We extend this characterization, which is due to Iyengar and Krause, to arbitrary commutative noetherian rings, i.e. we remove the assumption about a dualizing complex. In this context Gorenstein, of course, means locally Gorenstein at every prime.
In \cite{Ouarghi}, the authors discuss the rings over which all modules are strongly Gorenstein projective. In this paper, we are interesting to an extension of this idea. Thus, we discuss the rings over which every Gorenstein projective (resp. flat) module is strongly Gorenstein projective (resp, flat). Our aim is to give examples of rings with different Gorenstein global dimension satisfied this condition.
We consider a right coherent ring R. We prove that the class of Gorenstein flat complexes is covering in the category of complexes of left R-modules Ch(R). When R is also left n-perfect, we prove that the class of Gorenstein projective complexes is special precovering in Ch(R).
For a commutative ring R and a faithfully flat R-algebra S we prove, under mild extra assumptions, that an R-module M is Gorenstein flat if and only if the left S-module S\otimes M is Gorenstein flat, and that an R-module N is Gorenstein injective if and only if it is cotorsion and the left S-module Hom(S,N) is Gorenstein injective. We apply these results to the study of Gorenstein homological dimensions of unbounded complexes. In particular, we prove two theorems on stability of these dimensions under faithfully flat (co-)base change.
Let A be an artin algebra. An A-module M is semi-Gorenstein-projective provided that Ext^i(M,A) = 0 for all i > 0. If M is Gorenstein-projective, then both M and its A-dual M* are semi-Gorenstein projective. As we have shown recently, the converse is not true, thus answering a question raised by Avramov and Martsinkovsky. The aim of the present note is to analyse in detail the modules M such that both M and M* are semi-Gorenstein-projective.
We prove that the class of Gorenstein projective modules is special precovering over any left GF-closed ring such that every Gorenstein projective module is Gorenstein flat and every Gorenstein flat module has finite Gorenstein projective dimension. This class of rings includes (strictly) Gorenstein rings, commutative noetherian rings of finite Krull dimension, as well as right coherent and left n-perfect rings. In section 4 we give examples of left GF-closed rings that have the desired properties (every Gorenstein projective module is Gorenstein flat and every Gorenstein flat has finite Goren…
Let $R$ be a ring with identity and $\C(R)$ denote the category of complexes of $R$-modules. In this paper we study the homotopy categories arising from projective (resp. injective) complexes as well as Gorenstein projective (resp. Gorenstein injective) modules. We show that the homotopy category of projective complexes over $R$, denoted $\KPC$, is always well generated and is compactly generated provided $\KPR$ is so. Based on this result, it will be proved that the class of Gorenstein projective complexes is precovering, whenever $R$ is a commutative noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension…
We give a result of Auslander-Ringel-Tachikawa type for Gorenstein-projective modules over a complete Gorenstein order. In particular, we prove that a complete Gorenstein order is of finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type if and only if every indecomposable pure-injective object in the stable category of Gorenstein-projective modules is compact.
Gorenstein homological dimensions are refinements of the classical homological dimensions, and finiteness singles out modules with amenable properties reflecting those of modules over Gorenstein rings. As opposed to their classical counterparts, these dimensions do not immediately come with practical and robust criteria for finiteness, not even over commutative noetherian local rings. In this paper we enlarge the class of rings known to admit good criteria for finiteness of Gorenstein dimensions: It now includes, for instance, the rings encountered in commutative algebraic geometry and, in the…
The main aim of this paper is to investigate rings over which all (finitely generated strongly) Gorenstein projective modules are projective. We consider this propriety under change of rings, and give various examples of rings with and without this propriety.
In this paper, we study a particular case of Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat modules, which we call, respectively, strongly Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat modules. These last three modules give us a new characterization of the first modules, and confirm that there is an analogy between the notion of Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat modules and the notion of the usual projective, injective, and flat modules.
One of the main results of this paper is the characterization of the rings over which all modules are strongly Gorenstein projective. We show that these kinds of rings are very particular cases of the well-known quasi-Frobenius rings. We give examples of rings over which all modules are Gorenstein projective but not necessarily strongly Gorenstein projective.
A result of Foxby states that if there exists a complex with finite depth, finite flat dimension, and finite injective dimension over a local ring $R$, then $R$ is Gorenstein. In this paper we investigate some homological dimensions involving a semidualizing complex and improve on Foxby's result by answering a question of Takahashi and White. In particular, we prove for a semidualizing complex $C$, if there exists a complex with finite depth, finite $\mathcal{F}_C$-projective dimension, and finite $\mathcal{I}_C$-injective dimension over a local ring $R$, then $R$ is Gorenstein.
We give a sufficient condition for the class of Gorenstein injective modules be precovering: if $R$ is right noetherian and if the class of Gorenstein injective modules, $\mathcal{GI}$, is closed under filtrations, then $\mathcal{GI}$ is precovering in $R-Mod$. The converse is also true when we assume that $\mathcal{GI}$ is covering. We extend our results to the category of complexes. We prove that if the class of Gorenstein injective modules is closed under filtrations then the class of Gorenstein injective complexes is precovering in $Ch(R)$. We also give a sufficient condition for the exist…
This paper generalize the idea of the authors in \cite{Bennis and Mahdou1}. Namely, we define and study a particular case of modules with Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat dimension less or equal than $n\geq 0$, which we call, respectively, strongly n-Gorenstein projective, injective and flat modules. These three classes of modules give us a new characterization of the first modules, and they are a generalization of the notions of strongly Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat modules respectively.
Unprojection theory aims to analyze and construct complicated commutative rings in terms of simpler ones. Our main result is that, on the algebraic level of Stanley-Reisner rings, stellar subdivisions of non-acyclic Gorenstein simplicial complexes correspond to unprojections of type Kustin-Miller. As an application, we inductively calculate the minimal graded free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to stacked polytopes, recovering results of Terai, Hibi, Herzog and Li Marzi.
It is proved that the broken circuit complex of an ordered matroid is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Several characterizations for a matroid that admits such an order are then given, with particular interest in the $h$-vector of broken circuit complexes of the matroid. As an application, we prove that the Orlik--Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangement is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Interestingly, our result shows that the complete intersection property (and hence the Gorensteinness as well) of the Orlik--Terao algebra can be determined f…
We consider the homotopy category of complexes of projective modules over a Noetherian ring. Truncation at degree zero induces a fully faithful triangle functor from the totally acyclic complexes to the stable derived category. We show that if the ring is either Artin or commutative Noetherian local, then the functor is dense if and only if the ring is Gorenstein. Motivated by this, we define the Gorenstein defect category of the ring, a category which in some sense measures how far the ring is from being Gorenstein.
We investigate the relationship between the level of a bounded complex over a commutative ring with respect to the class of Gorenstein projective modules and other invariants of the complex or ring, such as projective dimension, Gorenstein projective dimension, and Krull dimension. The results build upon work done by J. Christensen [6], H. Altmann et al. [1], and Avramov et al. [3] for levels with respect to the class of finitely generated projective modules.
This paper generalize the idea of the authors in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 210 (2007) 437--445. Namely, we define and study a particular case of Gorenstein projective modules. We investigate some change of rings results for this new kind of modules. Examples over not necessarily Noetherian rings are given.
Assume sigma is a face of a Gorenstein* simplicial complex D. We investigate the question of whether the Weak Lefschetz Property of the Stanley-Reisner ring k[D] (over an infinite field k) is equivalent to the same property of the Stanley-Reisner ring k[D_sigma] of the stellar subdivision D_sigma. We prove that this is the case if the dimension of sigma is big compared to the codimension.
The main invariant to study the combinatorics of a simplicial complex $K$ is the associated face ring or Stanley-Reisner algebra. Reisner respectively Stanley explained in which sense Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of the face ring are reflected by geometric and/or combinatoric properties of the simplicial complex. We give a new proof for these result by homotopy theoretic methods and constructions. Our approach is based on ideas used very successfully in the analysis of the homotopy theory of classifying spaces.
In this paper, we study the relative homological dimension based on the class of projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat modules (PGF-modules), that were introduced by Saroch and Stovicek. The resulting PGF-dimension of modules has several properties in common with the Gorenstein projective dimension, the relative homological theory based on the class of Gorenstein projective modules. In particular, there is a hereditary Hovey triple in the category of modules of finite PGF-dimension, whose associated homotopy category is triangulated equivalent to the stable category of PGF-modules. Studying …
This thesis is comprised of three chapters. The first chapter deals with bounded complexes of Gorenstein projective and Gorenstein injective modules. Deploying methods of relative homological algebra, we approximate such complexes with bounded complexes of projective and injective modules, respectively. As an application, we investigate the Gorenstein version of the New Intersection Theorem. The second chapter studies the notion of cofiniteness for modules and complexes set forth by Hartshorne. Recruiting techniques of derived category, we study this notion thoroughly, obtain novel results, an…
For a given class of modules $\A$, we denote by $\widetilde{\A}$ the class of exact complexes $X$ having all cycles in $\A$, and by $dw(\A)$ the class of complexes $Y$ with all components $Y_j$ in $\A$. We consider a two sided noetherian ring $R$ and we use the notations $\mathcal{GI}$ $(\mathcal{GF}, \mathcal{GP})$ for the class of Gorenstein injective (flat, projective respectively) $R$-modules. We prove (Theorem 1) that the following are equivalent: 1. Every exact complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. 2. Every exact complex of Gorenstein injective modules is in $\widetilde{\mathc…
The principle "Every result in classical homological algebra should have a counterpart in Gorenstein homological algebra" is given in [3]. There is a remarkable body of evidence supporting this claim (cf. [2] and [3]). Perhaps one of the most glaring exceptions is provided by the fact that tensor products of Gorenstein projective modules need not be Gorenstein projective, even over Gorenstein rings. So perhaps it is surprising that tensor products of Gorenstein injective modules over Gorenstein rings of finite Krull dimension are Gorenstein injective. Our main result is in support of the princ…
We describe a general correspondence between injective (resp. projective) recollements of triangulated categories and injective (resp. projective) cotorsion pairs. This provides a model category description of these recollement situations. Our applications focus on displaying several recollements that glue together various full subcategories of K(R), the homotopy category of chain complexes of modules over a general ring R. When R is (left) Noetherian ring, these recollements involve complexes built from the Gorenstein injective modules. When R is a (left) coherent ring for which all flat modu…
Motivated by their impact on homological algebra, the change of rings results have been the subject of several interesting works in Gorenstein homological algebra over Noetherian rings. In this paper, we investigate the change of rings theorems for the Gorenstein dimensions over arbitrary rings. Namely, by the use of the notion of strongly Gorenstein modules, we extend the well-known first, second, and third change of rings theorems for the classical projective and injective dimensions to the Gorenstein projective and injective dimensions, respectively. Each of the results established, in this…
Let A be a noetherian local commutative ring and let M be a suitable complex of A-modules. This paper proves that M is a dualizing complex for A if and only if the trivial extension A \ltimes M is a Gorenstein Differential Graded Algebra. As a corollary follows that A has a dualizing complex if and only if it is a quotient of a Gorenstein local Differential Graded Algebra.
We show that a differential module is Gorenstein projective if and only if its underlying module is Gorenstein projective. Dually, a differential module is Gorenstein injective if and only if its underlying module is Gorenstein injective.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring. An $R$-module $M$ is said to be super finitely presented if there is an exact sequence of $R$-modules $\cdots\rightarrow P_n\rightarrow\cdots \rightarrow P_1\rightarrow P_0\rightarrow M\rightarrow 0$ where each $P_i$ is finitely generated projective. In this paper it is shown that if $R$ has the property (B) that every super finitely presented module has finite Gorenstein projective dimension, then every finitely generated Gorenstein projective module is super finitely presented. As an application of the notion of super finitely presented modules, we show that if…
From certain triangle functors, called non-negative functors, between the bounded derived categories of abelian categories with enough projective objects, we introduce their stable functors which are certain additive functors between the stable categories of the abelian categories. The construction generalizes a previous work by Hu and Xi. We show that the stable functors of non-negative functors have nice exactness property and are compatible with composition of functors. This allows us to compare conveniently the homological properties of objects linked by the stable functors. Particularly, …
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring with a dualizing complex. By recent work of Iyengar and Krause, the difference between the category of acyclic complexes and its subcategory of totally acyclic complexes measures how far $R$ is from being Gorenstein. In particular, $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if every acyclic complex is totally acyclic. In this note we exhibit a specific acyclic complex with the property that it is totally acyclic if and only if $R$ is Gorenstein.
Unlike the Gorenstein projective and injective dimensions, the majority of results on the Gorenstein flat dimension have been established only over Noetherian (or coherent) rings. Naturally, one would like to generalize these results to any associative ring. In this direction, we show that the Gorenstein flat dimension is a refinement of the classical flat dimension over any ring; and we investigate the relations between the Gorenstein projective dimension and the Gorenstein flat dimension.
This is a survey article on Gorenstein initial complexes of extensively studied ideals in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. These include defining ideals of Segre and Veronese varieties, toric deformations of flag varieties known as Hibi ideals, determinantal ideals of generic matrices of indeterminates, and ideals generated by Pfaffians of generic skew symmetric matrices. We give a summary of recent work on the construction of squarefree Gorenstein initial ideals of these ideals when the ideals are themselves Gorenstein. We also present our own independent results for the Segre, Ver…
We prove basic facts about reflexivity in derived categories over noetherian schemes; and about related notions such as semidualizing complexes, invertible complexes, and Gorenstein-perfect maps. Also, we study a notion of rigidity with respect to semidualizing complexes, in particular, relative dualizing complexes for Gorenstein-perfect maps. Our results include theorems of Yekutieli and Zhang concerning rigid dualizing complexes on schemes. This work is a continuation of part I, which dealt with commutative rings.
We characterize Ding modules and complexes over Ding-Chen rings. We show that over a Ding-Chen ring R, the Ding projective (resp. Ding injective, resp. Ding flat) R-modules coincide with the Gorenstein projective (resp. Gorenstein injective, resp. Gorenstein flat) modules, which in turn are nothing more than modules appearing as a cycle of an exact complex of projective (resp. injective, resp. flat) modules. We prove a similar characterization for chain complexes of R-modules: A complex is Ding projective (resp. Ding injective, resp. Ding flat) if and only if each component is Ding projective …
It was proved by Beligiannis and Krause that over certain Artin algebras, there are Gorenstein flat modules which are not direct limits of finitely generated Gorenstein projective modules. That is, these algebras have no Gorenstein analogue of the Govorov-Lazard Theorem. We show that, in fact, there is a large class of rings without such an analogue. Namely, let R be a commutative local noetherian ring. Then the analogue fails for R if it has a dualizing complex, is henselian, not Gorenstein, and has a finitely generated Gorenstein projective module which is not free. The proof is based on a t…
