We introduce and investigate the notion of $\gc$-projective modules over (possibly non-noetherian) commutative rings, where $C$ is a semidualizing module. This extends Holm and Jørgensen's notion of $C$-Gorenstein projective modules to the non-noetherian setting and generalizes projective and Gorenstein projective modules within this setting. We then study the resulting modules of finite $\gc$-projective dimension, showing in particular that they admit $\gc$-projective approximations, a generalization of the maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations of Auslander and Buchweitz. Over a local (noetherian) ring, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a $G_C$-approximation to be minimal.
Let $C$ be a semidualizing module. We first investigate the properties of finitely generated $G_C$-projective modules. Then, relative to $C$, we introduce and study the rings of Gorenstein (weak) global dimensions at most 1, which we call $C$-Gorenstein (semi)hereditary rings, and prove that every $C$-Gorenstein hereditary ring is both coherent and $C$-Gorenstein semihereditary.
A result of Foxby states that if there exists a complex with finite depth, finite flat dimension, and finite injective dimension over a local ring $R$, then $R$ is Gorenstein. In this paper we investigate some homological dimensions involving a semidualizing complex and improve on Foxby's result by answering a question of Takahashi and White. In particular, we prove for a semidualizing complex $C$, if there exists a complex with finite depth, finite $\mathcal{F}_C$-projective dimension, and finite $\mathcal{I}_C$-injective dimension over a local ring $R$, then $R$ is Gorenstein.
We investigate the properties of categories of G_C-flat R-modules where C is a semidualizing module over a commutative noetherian ring R. We prove that the category of all G_C-flat R-modules is part of a weak AB-context, in the terminology of Hashimoto. In particular, this allows us to deduce the existence of certain Auslander-Buchweitz approximations for R-modules of finite G_C-flat dimension. We also prove that two procedures for building R-modules from complete resolutions by certain subcategories of G_C-flat R-modules yield only the modules in the original subcategories.
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a local ring and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$--module. In this paper, we are concerned in $C$--injective and $G_{C}$--injective dimensions of certain local cohomology modules of $R$. Firstly, the injective dimension of $C$ and the above quantities of dimensions is compared. Then, as an application of the above comparisons, a characterization of a dualizing module of $R$ is given. Finally, it is shown that if $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension $d$ such that $\H_{\fm}^{d}(C)$ is $C$--injective, then $R$ is Gorernstein. This is an answer to the question which was recently prese…
We investigate stable homology of modules over a commutative noetherian ring $R$ with respect to a semidualzing module $C$, and give some vanishing results that improve/extend the known results. As a consequence, we show that the balance of the theory forces $C$ to be trivial and $R$ to be Gorenstein.
We prove versions of results of Foxby and Holm about modules of finite (Gorenstein) injective dimension and finite (Gorenstein) projective dimension with respect to a semidualizing module. We also verify special cases of a question of Takahashi and White.
We investigate the notion of the C-projective dimension of a module, where C is a semidualizing module. When C=R, this recovers the standard projective dimension. We show that three natural definitions of finite C-projective dimension agree, and investigate the relationship between relative cohomology modules and absolute cohomology modules in this setting. Finally, we prove several results that demonstrate the deep connections between modules of finite projective dimension and modules of finite C-projective dimension. In parallel, we develop the dual theory for injective dimension and C-injec…
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring. The $n$-semidualizing modules of $R$ are generalizations of its semidualizing modules. We will prove some basic properties of $n$-semidualizing modules. Our main result and example shows that the divisor class group of a Gorenstein determinantal ring over a field is the set of isomorphism classes of its 1-semidualizing modules. Finally, we pose some questions about $n$-semidualizing modules.
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring. A finitely generated R-module C is semidualizing if it is self-orthogonal and satisfies the condition Hom_R(C,C) \cong R. We prove that a Cohen-Macaulay ring R with dualizing module D admits a semidualizing module C satisfying R\ncong C \ncong D if and only if it is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring in which the defining ideal decomposes in a cohomologically independent way. This expands on a well-known result of Foxby, Reiten and Sharp saying that R admits a dualizing module if and only if R is Cohen--Macaulay and a homomorphic image of a l…
Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring with residue class field k. In this paper, we mainly investigate direct summands of the syzygy modules of k. We prove that R is regular if and only if some syzygy module of k has a semidualizing summand. After that, we consider whether R is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy module of k has a G-projective summand.
The notion of linkage with respect to a semidualizing module is introduced. It is shown that over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with canonical module, every Cohen-Macaulay module of finite Gorenstein injective dimension is linked with respect to the canonical module. For a linked module $M$ with respect to a semidualizing module, the connection between the Serre condition $(S_n)$ on $M$ with the vanishing of certain local cohomology modules of its linked module is discussed.
Inspired by Jorgensen et. al., it is proved that if a Cohen--Macaulay local ring $R$ with dualizing module admits a suitable chain of semidualizing $R$--modules of length $n$, then $R\cong Q/(I_1+\cdots+I_n)$ for some Gorenstein ring $Q$ and ideals $I_1,\cdots, I_n$ of $Q$; and, for each $Λ\subseteq [n]$, the ring $Q/(Σ_{l\in Λ} I_l)$ has some interesting cohomological properties . This extends the result of Jorgensen et. al., and also of Foxby and Reiten.
We continue our study of ladder determinantal rings over a field $\mathsf k$ from the perspective of semidualizing modules. In particular, given a ladder of variables $Y$, we show that the associated ladder determinantal ring $\mathsf k[Y]/I_2(Y)$ admits exactly $2^n$ non-isomorphic semidualizing modules where $n$ is determined from the combinatorics of the ladder $Y$: the number $n$ is essentially the number of non-Gorenstein factors in a certain decomposition of $Y$. From this, for each $n$, we show explicitly how to find ladders $Y$ such that $\mathsf k[Y]/I_2(Y)$ admits exactly $2^n$ non-i…
In their investigation of horizontal linkage of modules of finite Gorenstein dimension over a commutative, Noetherian, semiperfect (e.g., local) ring, Dibaei and Sadeghi introduced the class of reduced G-perfect modules, making use of Bass' concept of reduced grade. A few years later, the same authors extended this class by considering the relative property of reduced G$_C$-perfection, where $C$ is a semidualizing module, and studied linkage even further. In the present paper, we contribute to their theory and also generalize results of Auslander and Bridger as well as of Martsinkovsky and Str…
Of the many interesting insights in the Auslander-Bridger Memoir of 1969, the theory of Gorenstein dimension has most often been taken up by commutative algebraists. Over a local ring, it deals with resolutions by modules which are totally reflexive with regard to free modules. For some years now, one has been trying to replace frees by semidualizing modules. This has met with success, and more is to follow. To me however, it makes sense to first try and understand semidualizing modules themselves better. This note shows in a direct way that they share many properties with free modules. One ho…
We prove basic facts about reflexivity in derived categories over noetherian schemes; and about related notions such as semidualizing complexes, invertible complexes, and Gorenstein-perfect maps. Also, we study a notion of rigidity with respect to semidualizing complexes, in particular, relative dualizing complexes for Gorenstein-perfect maps. Our results include theorems of Yekutieli and Zhang concerning rigid dualizing complexes on schemes. This work is a continuation of part I, which dealt with commutative rings.
We investigate the set S(R) of shift-isomorphism classes of semidualizing R-complexes, ordered via the reflexivity relation, where R is a commutative noetherian local ring. Specifically, we study the question of whether S(R$ has cardinality 2^n for some n. We show that, if there is a chain of length n in S(R) and if the reflexivity ordering on S(R) is transitive, then S(R) has cardinality at least 2^n, and we explicitly describe some of its order-structure. We also show that, given a local ring homomorphism f: R\to S of finite flat dimension, if R and S admit dualizing complexes and if f is no…
Given a semidualizing module $C$ over a commutative noetherian ring, Holm and Jørgensen investigate some connections between $C$-Gorenstein dimensions of an $R$-complex and Gorenstein dimensions of the same complex viewed as a complex over the "trivial extension" $R \ltimes C$. We generalize some of their results to a certain type of retract diagram. We also investigate some examples of such retract diagrams, namely D'Anna and Fontana's amalgamated duplication and Enescu's pseudocanonical cover.
In this paper, it is proved that a commutative noetherian local ring admitting a finitely generated module of finite projective and injective dimensions with respect to a semidualizing module is Gorenstein. This result recovers a celebrated theorem of Foxby.
In this paper we build off of Takahashi and White's $\mathcal{P}_C$-projective dimension and $\mathcal{I}_C$-injective dimension to define these dimensions for when $C$ is a semidaulizing complex. We develop the framework for these homological dimensions by establishing base change results and local-global behavior. Furthermore, we investigate how these dimensions interact with other invariants.
We define and study a notion of Gorenstein projective dimension for complexes of left modules over associative rings. For complexes of finite Gorenstein projective dimension we define and study a Tate cohomology theory. Tate cohomology groups have a natural transformation to classical Ext groups. In the case of module arguments, we show that these maps fit into a long exact sequence, where every third term is a relative cohomology group defined for left modules of finite Gorenstein projective dimension.
Gorenstein rings are important to mathematical areas as diverse as algebraic geometry, where they encode information about singularities of spaces, and homotopy theory, through the concept of model categories. In consequence, the study of Gorenstein rings has led to the advent of a whole branch of homological algebra, known as Gorenstein homological algebra. This paper solves one of the open problems of Gorenstein homological algebra by showing that so-called Gorenstein projective resolutions exist over quite general rings, thereby enabling the definition of a Gorenstein version of derived fun…
Let $ R $ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that the $ n $th syzygy module of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay $ R $-module cannot have a semidualizing direct summand for every $ n \ge 1 $. In particular, it follows that $ R $ is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy of a canonical module of $ R $ has a non-zero free direct summand. We also give a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of minimal multiplicity to be regular or Gorenstein. These criteria are based on vanishing of certain Exts or Tors involving syzygy modules of the residue field.
A finitely generated module C over a commutative noetherian ring R is semidualizing if Hom_R(C,C) \cong R and Ext^i_R(C,C) = 0 for all i \geq 1. For certain local Cohen-Macaulay rings (R,m), we verify the equality of Hilbert-Samuel multiplicities e_R(J;C) = e_R(J;R) for all semidualizing R-modules C and all m-primary ideals J. The classes of rings we investigate include those that are determined by ideals defining fat point schemes in projective space or by monomial ideals.
We show that an iteration of the procedure used to define the Gorenstein projective modules over a commutative ring $R$ yields exactly the Gorenstein projective modules. Specifically, given an exact sequence of Gorenstein projective $R$-modules $G=...\xra{\partial^G_2}G_1\xra{\partial^G_1}G_0\xra{\partial^G_0} ...$ such that the complexes $\Hom_R(G,H)$ and $\Hom_R(H,G)$ are exact for each Gorenstein projective $R$-module $H$, the module $\coker(\partial^G_1)$ is Gorenstein projective. The proof of this result hinges upon our analysis of Gorenstein subcategories of abelian categories.
We extend the definition of a semidualizing module to associative rings. This enables us to define and study Auslander and Bass classes with respect to a semidualizing bimodule C. We then study the classes of C-flats, C-projectives, and C-injectives, and use them to provide a characterization of the modules in the Auslander and Bass classes. We extend Foxby equivalence to this new setting. This paper contains a few results which are new in the commutative, noetherian setting.
Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a Noetherian local ring $R$ and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$-module. For an $R$-module $X$, we denote any of the quantities $\fd_R X$, $\Gfd_R X$ and $\GCfd_RX$ by $\T(X)$. Let $M$ be an $R$-module such that $\H_{\fa}^i(M)=0$ for all $i\neq n$. It is proved that if $\T(X)<\infty$, then $\T(\H_{\fa}^n(M))\leq\T(M)+n$ and the equality holds whenever $M$ is finitely generated. With the aid of these results, among other things, we characterize Cohen-Macaulay modules, dualizing modules and Gorenstein rings.
We consider relative Tor functors built from resolutions described by a semidualizing module C over a commutative noetherian ring R. We show that the bifunctors Tor^{F_CM}_i (-,-) and Tor^{P_CM}_i (-,-), defined using flat-like and projective-like resolutions, are isomorphic. We show how the vanishing of these functors characterizes the finiteness of the homological dimension F_C-pd, and we use this to give a relation between the F_C-pd of a given module and that of a pure submodule. On the other hand, we show that other relations that one may expect to hold similarly, fail in general. In fact…
In this paper, we characterize several properties of commutative notherian local rings in terms of the left perpendicular category of the category of finitely generated modules of finite projective dimension. As an application we prove that a local ring is regular if (and only if) there exists a strong test module for projectivity having finite projective dimension. We also obtain corresponding results with respect to a semidualizing module.
Gorenstein homological dimensions are refinements of the classical homological dimensions, and finiteness singles out modules with amenable properties reflecting those of modules over Gorenstein rings. As opposed to their classical counterparts, these dimensions do not immediately come with practical and robust criteria for finiteness, not even over commutative noetherian local rings. In this paper we enlarge the class of rings known to admit good criteria for finiteness of Gorenstein dimensions: It now includes, for instance, the rings encountered in commutative algebraic geometry and, in the…
In \cite{Ouarghi}, the authors discuss the rings over which all modules are strongly Gorenstein projective. In this paper, we are interesting to an extension of this idea. Thus, we discuss the rings over which every Gorenstein projective (resp. flat) module is strongly Gorenstein projective (resp, flat). Our aim is to give examples of rings with different Gorenstein global dimension satisfied this condition.
Let A be an artin algebra. An A-module M is semi-Gorenstein-projective provided that Ext^i(M,A) = 0 for all i > 0. If M is Gorenstein-projective, then both M and its A-dual M* are semi-Gorenstein projective. As we have shown recently, the converse is not true, thus answering a question raised by Avramov and Martsinkovsky. The aim of the present note is to analyse in detail the modules M such that both M and M* are semi-Gorenstein-projective.
We prove that the class of Gorenstein projective modules is special precovering over any left GF-closed ring such that every Gorenstein projective module is Gorenstein flat and every Gorenstein flat module has finite Gorenstein projective dimension. This class of rings includes (strictly) Gorenstein rings, commutative noetherian rings of finite Krull dimension, as well as right coherent and left n-perfect rings. In section 4 we give examples of left GF-closed rings that have the desired properties (every Gorenstein projective module is Gorenstein flat and every Gorenstein flat has finite Goren…
We give a result of Auslander-Ringel-Tachikawa type for Gorenstein-projective modules over a complete Gorenstein order. In particular, we prove that a complete Gorenstein order is of finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type if and only if every indecomposable pure-injective object in the stable category of Gorenstein-projective modules is compact.
The main aim of this paper is to investigate rings over which all (finitely generated strongly) Gorenstein projective modules are projective. We consider this propriety under change of rings, and give various examples of rings with and without this propriety.
In this paper, we study the relative homological dimension based on the class of projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat modules (PGF-modules), that were introduced by Saroch and Stovicek. The resulting PGF-dimension of modules has several properties in common with the Gorenstein projective dimension, the relative homological theory based on the class of Gorenstein projective modules. In particular, there is a hereditary Hovey triple in the category of modules of finite PGF-dimension, whose associated homotopy category is triangulated equivalent to the stable category of PGF-modules. Studying …
In this paper, we study a particular case of Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat modules, which we call, respectively, strongly Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat modules. These last three modules give us a new characterization of the first modules, and confirm that there is an analogy between the notion of Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat modules and the notion of the usual projective, injective, and flat modules.
One of the main results of this paper is the characterization of the rings over which all modules are strongly Gorenstein projective. We show that these kinds of rings are very particular cases of the well-known quasi-Frobenius rings. We give examples of rings over which all modules are Gorenstein projective but not necessarily strongly Gorenstein projective.
Let $R$ be a local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. The complete intersection dimension of $M$--defined by Avramov, Gasharov and Peeva, and denoted $\cidim_R(M)$--is a homological invariant whose finiteness implies that $M$ is similar to a module over a complete intersection. It is related to the classical projective dimension and to Auslander and Bridger's Gorenstein dimension by the inequalities $\gdim_R(N)\leq\cidim_R(N)\leq\pd_R(N)$. Using Blanco and Majadas' version of complete intersection dimension for local ring homomorphisms, we prove the following generalization of a the…
The principle "Every result in classical homological algebra should have a counterpart in Gorenstein homological algebra" is given in [3]. There is a remarkable body of evidence supporting this claim (cf. [2] and [3]). Perhaps one of the most glaring exceptions is provided by the fact that tensor products of Gorenstein projective modules need not be Gorenstein projective, even over Gorenstein rings. So perhaps it is surprising that tensor products of Gorenstein injective modules over Gorenstein rings of finite Krull dimension are Gorenstein injective. Our main result is in support of the princ…
This paper generalize the idea of the authors in \cite{Bennis and Mahdou1}. Namely, we define and study a particular case of modules with Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat dimension less or equal than $n\geq 0$, which we call, respectively, strongly n-Gorenstein projective, injective and flat modules. These three classes of modules give us a new characterization of the first modules, and they are a generalization of the notions of strongly Gorenstein projective, injective, and flat modules respectively.
We consider a right coherent ring R. We prove that the class of Gorenstein flat complexes is covering in the category of complexes of left R-modules Ch(R). When R is also left n-perfect, we prove that the class of Gorenstein projective complexes is special precovering in Ch(R).
For a semidualizing module $C$ over a ring $R$, we study the following classes modulo exact zero divisors: $\g_C$--projectives, $\mathcal G_C$; the Auslander class $\mathcal A_C$; the Bass class $\mathcal B_C$; $\mathcal{P}_C$--projective; $ {\mathcal F}_C$--projective; and ${\mathcal I}_C$--injective dimensions.
Inspired by a recent work of Buchweitz and Flenner, we show that, for a semidualizing bimodule $C$, $C$--perfect complexes have the ability to detect when a ring is strongly regular. It is shown that there exists a class of modules which admit minimal resolutions of $C$--projective modules.
We investigate the relationship between the level of a bounded complex over a commutative ring with respect to the class of Gorenstein projective modules and other invariants of the complex or ring, such as projective dimension, Gorenstein projective dimension, and Krull dimension. The results build upon work done by J. Christensen [6], H. Altmann et al. [1], and Avramov et al. [3] for levels with respect to the class of finitely generated projective modules.
This paper generalize the idea of the authors in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 210 (2007) 437--445. Namely, we define and study a particular case of Gorenstein projective modules. We investigate some change of rings results for this new kind of modules. Examples over not necessarily Noetherian rings are given.
In this article, we shall characterize torsionfreeness of modules with respect to a semidualizing module in terms of the Serre's condition (S_n). As its applications, we give a characterization of Cohen-Macaulay rings R such that R_p is Gorenstein for all prime ideals p of height less than n, and we will give a partial answer of Tachikawa conjecture and Auslander-Reiten conjecture.
Motivated by their impact on homological algebra, the change of rings results have been the subject of several interesting works in Gorenstein homological algebra over Noetherian rings. In this paper, we investigate the change of rings theorems for the Gorenstein dimensions over arbitrary rings. Namely, by the use of the notion of strongly Gorenstein modules, we extend the well-known first, second, and third change of rings theorems for the classical projective and injective dimensions to the Gorenstein projective and injective dimensions, respectively. Each of the results established, in this…
We introduce Gorenstein silting modules (resp. complexes), and give the relation with the usual silting modules (resp. complexes). We show that Gorenstein silting modules are the module-theoretic counterpart of 2-term Gorenstein silting complexes; and partial Gorenstein silting modules are in bijection with τ_{G}-rigid modules for finite dimensional algebras of finite CM-type. We also give the relation between 2-term Gorenstein silting complexes, t-structures and torsion pair in module categories; and generalise the classical Brenner-Butler theorem to this setting; and characterise the global …
