We investigate the set S(R) of shift-isomorphism classes of semidualizing R-complexes, ordered via the reflexivity relation, where R is a commutative noetherian local ring. Specifically, we study the question of whether S(R$ has cardinality 2^n for some n. We show that, if there is a chain of length n in S(R) and if the reflexivity ordering on S(R) is transitive, then S(R) has cardinality at least 2^n, and we explicitly describe some of its order-structure. We also show that, given a local ring homomorphism f: R\to S of finite flat dimension, if R and S admit dualizing complexes and if f is not Gorenstein, then the cardinality of S(S) is at least twice the cardinality of S(R).
We prove that a local ring $R$ of embedding codepth at most 3 has at most two semidualizing complexes up to shift-isomorphism, namely, $R$ itself and a dualizing $R$-complex if one exists.
Let R be a commutative local noetherian ring. We prove that the existence of a chain of semidualizing R-complexes of length (d+1) yields a degree-d polynomial lower bound for the Bass numbers of R. We also show how information about certain Bass numbers of R provide restrictions on the lengths of chains of semidualizing R-complexes. To make this article somewhat self-contained, we also include a survey of some of the basic properties of semidualizing modules, semidualizing complexes and derived categories.
We introduce and study a class of objects that encompasses Christensen and Foxby's semidualizing modules and complexes and Kubik's quasi-dualizing modules: the class of $\mathfrak{a}$-adic semidualizing modules and complexes. We give examples and equivalent characterizations of these objects, including a characterization in terms of the more familiar semidualizing property. As an application, we give a proof of the existence of dualizing complexes over complete local rings that does not use the Cohen Structure Theorem.
It is known that the numerical invariants Betti numbers and Bass numbers are worthwhile tools for decoding a large amount of information about modules over commutative rings. We highlight this fact, further, by establishing some criteria for certain semidualizing complexes via their Betti and Bass numbers. Two distinguished types of semidualizing complexes are the shifts of the underlying rings and dualizing complexes. Let $C$ be a semidualizing complex for an analytically irreducible local ring $R$ and set $n:=\sup C$ and $d:=\dim_RC$. We show that $C$ is quasi-isomorphic to a shift of $R$ if…
We show that the set $\s(R)$ of shift-isomorphism classes of semidualizing complexes over a local ring $R$ admits a nontrivial metric. We investigate the interplay between the metric and several algebraic operations. Motivated by the dagger duality isometry, we prove the following: If $K,L$ are homologically bounded below and degreewise finite $R$-complexes such that $K\lotimes_R K\lotimes_R L$ is semidualizing, then $K$ is shift-isomorphic to $R$. In investigating the existence of nontrivial open balls in $\s(R)$, we prove that $\s(R)$ contains elements that are not comparable in the reflexiv…
We study the following question: Given two semidualizing complexes B and C over a commutative noetherian ring R, does the vanishing of Ext^n_R(B,C) for n>>0 imply that B is C-reflexive? This question is a natural generalization of one studied by Avramov, Buchweitz, and Sega. We begin by providing conditions equivalent to B being C-reflexive, each of which is slightly stronger than the condition Ext^n_R(B,C)=0 for all n>>0. We introduce and investigate an equivalence relation \approx on the set of isomorphism classes of semidualizing complexes. This relation is defined in terms of a natural act…
A result of Foxby states that if there exists a complex with finite depth, finite flat dimension, and finite injective dimension over a local ring $R$, then $R$ is Gorenstein. In this paper we investigate some homological dimensions involving a semidualizing complex and improve on Foxby's result by answering a question of Takahashi and White. In particular, we prove for a semidualizing complex $C$, if there exists a complex with finite depth, finite $\mathcal{F}_C$-projective dimension, and finite $\mathcal{I}_C$-injective dimension over a local ring $R$, then $R$ is Gorenstein.
Let $C$ be a semidualizing module. We first investigate the properties of finitely generated $G_C$-projective modules. Then, relative to $C$, we introduce and study the rings of Gorenstein (weak) global dimensions at most 1, which we call $C$-Gorenstein (semi)hereditary rings, and prove that every $C$-Gorenstein hereditary ring is both coherent and $C$-Gorenstein semihereditary.
We identify all semidualizing modules over certain classes of ladder determinantal rings over a field ${\mathsf k}$. Specifically, given a ladder of variables $Y$, we show that the ring ${\mathsf k}[Y]/I_t(Y)$ has only trivial semidualizing modules up to isomorphism in the following cases: (1) $Y$ is a one-sided ladder, and (2) $Y$ is a two-sided ladder with $t=2$ and no coincidental inside corners.
We continue our study of ladder determinantal rings over a field $\mathsf k$ from the perspective of semidualizing modules. In particular, given a ladder of variables $Y$, we show that the associated ladder determinantal ring $\mathsf k[Y]/I_2(Y)$ admits exactly $2^n$ non-isomorphic semidualizing modules where $n$ is determined from the combinatorics of the ladder $Y$: the number $n$ is essentially the number of non-Gorenstein factors in a certain decomposition of $Y$. From this, for each $n$, we show explicitly how to find ladders $Y$ such that $\mathsf k[Y]/I_2(Y)$ admits exactly $2^n$ non-i…
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring. The $n$-semidualizing modules of $R$ are generalizations of its semidualizing modules. We will prove some basic properties of $n$-semidualizing modules. Our main result and example shows that the divisor class group of a Gorenstein determinantal ring over a field is the set of isomorphism classes of its 1-semidualizing modules. Finally, we pose some questions about $n$-semidualizing modules.
Inspired by Jorgensen et. al., it is proved that if a Cohen--Macaulay local ring $R$ with dualizing module admits a suitable chain of semidualizing $R$--modules of length $n$, then $R\cong Q/(I_1+\cdots+I_n)$ for some Gorenstein ring $Q$ and ideals $I_1,\cdots, I_n$ of $Q$; and, for each $Λ\subseteq [n]$, the ring $Q/(Σ_{l\in Λ} I_l)$ has some interesting cohomological properties . This extends the result of Jorgensen et. al., and also of Foxby and Reiten.
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring. A finitely generated R-module C is semidualizing if it is self-orthogonal and satisfies the condition Hom_R(C,C) \cong R. We prove that a Cohen-Macaulay ring R with dualizing module D admits a semidualizing module C satisfying R\ncong C \ncong D if and only if it is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring in which the defining ideal decomposes in a cohomologically independent way. This expands on a well-known result of Foxby, Reiten and Sharp saying that R admits a dualizing module if and only if R is Cohen--Macaulay and a homomorphic image of a l…
A finitely generated module C over a commutative noetherian ring R is semidualizing if Hom_R(C,C) \cong R and Ext^i_R(C,C) = 0 for all i \geq 1. For certain local Cohen-Macaulay rings (R,m), we verify the equality of Hilbert-Samuel multiplicities e_R(J;C) = e_R(J;R) for all semidualizing R-modules C and all m-primary ideals J. The classes of rings we investigate include those that are determined by ideals defining fat point schemes in projective space or by monomial ideals.
We investigate some general machinery for describing semidualizing modules over generic constructions like ladder determinantal rings with coefficients in a normal domain. We also pose and investigate natural localization questions that arise in the process.
Let $R$ be a Noetherian ring and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$-module. In this paper, by using the semidualizing modules, we define and study new classes of modules and homological dimensions and investigate the relations between them. In parallel, we obtain some necessary and sufficient condition for $ C $ to be dualizing.
We prove basic facts about reflexivity in derived categories over noetherian schemes; and about related notions such as semidualizing complexes, invertible complexes, and Gorenstein-perfect maps. Also, we study a notion of rigidity with respect to semidualizing complexes, in particular, relative dualizing complexes for Gorenstein-perfect maps. Our results include theorems of Yekutieli and Zhang concerning rigid dualizing complexes on schemes. This work is a continuation of part I, which dealt with commutative rings.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring with residue class field k. In this paper, we mainly investigate direct summands of the syzygy modules of k. We prove that R is regular if and only if some syzygy module of k has a semidualizing summand. After that, we consider whether R is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy module of k has a G-projective summand.
The notion of linkage with respect to a semidualizing module is introduced. It is shown that over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with canonical module, every Cohen-Macaulay module of finite Gorenstein injective dimension is linked with respect to the canonical module. For a linked module $M$ with respect to a semidualizing module, the connection between the Serre condition $(S_n)$ on $M$ with the vanishing of certain local cohomology modules of its linked module is discussed.
Inspired by a recent work of Buchweitz and Flenner, we show that, for a semidualizing bimodule $C$, $C$--perfect complexes have the ability to detect when a ring is strongly regular. It is shown that there exists a class of modules which admit minimal resolutions of $C$--projective modules.
Of the many interesting insights in the Auslander-Bridger Memoir of 1969, the theory of Gorenstein dimension has most often been taken up by commutative algebraists. Over a local ring, it deals with resolutions by modules which are totally reflexive with regard to free modules. For some years now, one has been trying to replace frees by semidualizing modules. This has met with success, and more is to follow. To me however, it makes sense to first try and understand semidualizing modules themselves better. This note shows in a direct way that they share many properties with free modules. One ho…
Among the finitely generated modules over a Noetherian ring R, the semidualizing modules have been singled out due to their particularly nice duality properties. When R is a normal domain, we exhibit a natural inclusion of the set of isomorphism classes of semidualizing R-modules into the divisor class group of R. After a description of the basic properties of this inclusion, it is employed to investigate the structure of the set of isomorphism classes of semidualizing R-modules. In particular, this set is described completely for determinantal rings over normal domains.
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a local ring and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$--module. In this paper, we are concerned in $C$--injective and $G_{C}$--injective dimensions of certain local cohomology modules of $R$. Firstly, the injective dimension of $C$ and the above quantities of dimensions is compared. Then, as an application of the above comparisons, a characterization of a dualizing module of $R$ is given. Finally, it is shown that if $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension $d$ such that $\H_{\fm}^{d}(C)$ is $C$--injective, then $R$ is Gorernstein. This is an answer to the question which was recently prese…
We introduce and investigate the notion of $\gc$-projective modules over (possibly non-noetherian) commutative rings, where $C$ is a semidualizing module. This extends Holm and Jørgensen's notion of $C$-Gorenstein projective modules to the non-noetherian setting and generalizes projective and Gorenstein projective modules within this setting. We then study the resulting modules of finite $\gc$-projective dimension, showing in particular that they admit $\gc$-projective approximations, a generalization of the maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations of Auslander and Buchweitz. Over a local (noethe…
We investigate Tate cohomology of modules over a commutative noetherian ring with respect to semidualizing modules. We identify classes of modules admitting Tate resolutions and analyze the interaction between the corresponding relative and Tate cohomology modules. As an application of our approach, we prove a general balance result for Tate cohomology. Our results are based on an analysis of Tate cohomology in abelian categories.
We explicitly describe the divisor class groups and semidualizing modules for ladder determinantal rings with coefficients in an arbitrary normal domain for arbitrary ladders, not necessarily connected, and all sizes of minors.
We investigate stable homology of modules over a commutative noetherian ring $R$ with respect to a semidualzing module $C$, and give some vanishing results that improve/extend the known results. As a consequence, we show that the balance of the theory forces $C$ to be trivial and $R$ to be Gorenstein.
We construct a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ with a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}\in\spec(R)$ such that $R$ satisfies the uniform Auslander condition (UAC), but the localization $R_{\mathfrak{p}}$ does not satisfy Auslander's condition (AC). Given any positive integer $n$, we also construct a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ with a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}\in\spec(R)$ such that $R$ has exactly two non-isomorphic semidualizing modules, but the localization $R_{\mathfrak{p}}$ has $2^n$ non-isomorphic semidualizing modules. Each of these examples is constructed as a fiber product of two local rings ove…
Let C be a semidualizing complex over a noetherian local ring A. If there exists a local homomorphism with source A satisfying some homological properties, then C is dualizing.
We extend the definition of a semidualizing module to associative rings. This enables us to define and study Auslander and Bass classes with respect to a semidualizing bimodule C. We then study the classes of C-flats, C-projectives, and C-injectives, and use them to provide a characterization of the modules in the Auslander and Bass classes. We extend Foxby equivalence to this new setting. This paper contains a few results which are new in the commutative, noetherian setting.
Given a finitely generated module over a commutative noetherian ring that satisfies certain reflexivity conditions, we show how failure of the semidualizing property for the module manifests in a disconnection of the prime spectrum of the ring.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. Recently, Dibaei and Sadeghi have studied the reduced grade of a horizontally linked R-module M of finite GC-dimension, where C is a semidualizing R-module. In this paper, we highly refine their results. In particular, our main result removes the assumptions that M is holizontally linked and M has finite GC -dimension.
A notion of rigidity with respect to an arbitrary semidualizing complex C over a commutative noetherian ring R is introduced and studied. One of the main result characterizes C-rigid complexes. Specialized to the case when C is the relative dualizing complex of a homomorphism of rings of finite Gorenstein dimension, it leads to broad generalizations of theorems of Yekutieli and Zhang concerning rigid dualizing complexes, in the sense of Van den Bergh. Along the way, a number of new results concerning derived reflexivity with respect to C are established. Noteworthy is the statement that derive…
We continue our work on adic semidualizing complexes over a commutative noetherian ring $R$ by investigating the associated Auslander and Bass classes (collectively known as Foxby classes), following Foxby and Christensen. Fundamental properties of these classes include Foxby Equivalence, which provides an equivalence between the Auslander and Bass classes associated to a given adic semidualizing complex. We prove a variety of stability results for these classes, for instance, with respect to $F\otimes^{\mathbf{L}}_R-$ where $F$ is an $R$-complex finite flat dimension, including special conver…
Let $R$ be a Noetherian ring and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$-module. In this paper, by using the classes $ \mathcal{P}_C $ and $ \mathcal{I}_C $, we extend the notions of perfect and coperfect modules introduced by D.Rees \cite{R} and O.Jenda \cite{J1}. First, we study the basic properties of these modules and relations between them. Next, we characterize local rings in terms of the existence of special perfect (resp. coperfect) modules.
Given a semidualizing module $C$ over a commutative noetherian ring, Holm and Jørgensen investigate some connections between $C$-Gorenstein dimensions of an $R$-complex and Gorenstein dimensions of the same complex viewed as a complex over the "trivial extension" $R \ltimes C$. We generalize some of their results to a certain type of retract diagram. We also investigate some examples of such retract diagrams, namely D'Anna and Fontana's amalgamated duplication and Enescu's pseudocanonical cover.
Let (R,m) be a Noetherian local ring of depth d and C a semidualizing R-complex. Let M be a finite R-module and t an integer between 0 and d. If G_C-dimension of M/IM is finite for all ideals I generated by an R-regular sequence of length at most d-t then either G_C-dimension of M is at most t or C is a dualizing complex. Analogous results for other homological dimensions are also given.

Let $ R $ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that the $ n $th syzygy module of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay $ R $-module cannot have a semidualizing direct summand for every $ n \ge 1 $. In particular, it follows that $ R $ is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy of a canonical module of $ R $ has a non-zero free direct summand. We also give a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of minimal multiplicity to be regular or Gorenstein. These criteria are based on vanishing of certain Exts or Tors involving syzygy modules of the residue field.
For a semidualizing module $C$ over a ring $R$, we study the following classes modulo exact zero divisors: $\g_C$--projectives, $\mathcal G_C$; the Auslander class $\mathcal A_C$; the Bass class $\mathcal B_C$; $\mathcal{P}_C$--projective; $ {\mathcal F}_C$--projective; and ${\mathcal I}_C$--injective dimensions.
It is shown that the face ring of a pure simplicial complex modulo $m$ generic linear forms is a ring with finite local cohomology if and only if the link of every face of dimension $m$ or more is nonsingular.
We characterize the seminormality of an affine semigroup ring in terms of the dualizing complex, and the normality of a Cohen-Macaulay semigroup ring by the "shape" of the canonical module. We also characterize the seminormality of a toric face ring in terms of the dualizing complex. A toric face ring is a simultaneous generalization of Stanley-Reisner rings and affine semigroups.
We define a notion of Gorenstein flat dimension for unbounded complexes over left GF-closed rings. Over Gorenstein rings we introduce a notion of Gorenstein cohomology for complexes; we also define a generalized Tate cohomology for complexes over Gorenstein rings, and we show that there is a close connection between the absolute, the Gorenstein and the generalized Tate cohomology.
In this paper we present a systematic study of the reflexivity properties of homologically finite complexes with respect to semidualizing complexes in the setting of nonlocal rings. One primary focus is the descent of these properties over ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension, presented in terms of inequalities between generalized G-dimensions. Most of these results are new even when the ring homomorphism is local. The main tool for these analyses is a nonlocal version of the amplitude inequality of Iversen, Foxby, and Iyengar. We provide numerous examples demonstrating the need for cer…
A commutative noetherian ring with a dualizing complex is Gorenstein if and only if every acyclic complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. We extend this characterization, which is due to Iyengar and Krause, to arbitrary commutative noetherian rings, i.e. we remove the assumption about a dualizing complex. In this context Gorenstein, of course, means locally Gorenstein at every prime.
Examples are given to show that the support of a complex of modules over a commutative noetherian ring may not be read off the minimal semi-injective resolution of the complex. The same examples also show that a localization of a semi-injective complex need not be semi-injective.
Foxby defined the (Krull) dimension of a complex of modules over a commutative Noetherian ring in terms of the dimension of its homology modules. In this note it is proved that the dimension of a bounded complex of free modules of finite rank can be computed directly from the matrices representing the differentials of the complex.
Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a Noetherian local ring $R$ and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$-module. For an $R$-module $X$, we denote any of the quantities $\fd_R X$, $\Gfd_R X$ and $\GCfd_RX$ by $\T(X)$. Let $M$ be an $R$-module such that $\H_{\fa}^i(M)=0$ for all $i\neq n$. It is proved that if $\T(X)<\infty$, then $\T(\H_{\fa}^n(M))\leq\T(M)+n$ and the equality holds whenever $M$ is finitely generated. With the aid of these results, among other things, we characterize Cohen-Macaulay modules, dualizing modules and Gorenstein rings.
We present a short proof of Reisner's Theorem, characterizing which simplicial complexes have a Cohen-Macaulay face ring. In some cases, we can also express some homological invariants of the face ring in terms of the reduced homology of the complex.
We introduce a notion of pure-minimality for chain complexes of modules and show that it coincides with (homotopic) minimality in standard settings, while being a more useful notion for complexes of flat modules. As applications, we characterize von Neumann regular rings and left perfect rings.
For a given class of modules $\A$, we denote by $\widetilde{\A}$ the class of exact complexes $X$ having all cycles in $\A$, and by $dw(\A)$ the class of complexes $Y$ with all components $Y_j$ in $\A$. We consider a two sided noetherian ring $R$ and we use the notations $\mathcal{GI}$ $(\mathcal{GF}, \mathcal{GP})$ for the class of Gorenstein injective (flat, projective respectively) $R$-modules. We prove (Theorem 1) that the following are equivalent: 1. Every exact complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. 2. Every exact complex of Gorenstein injective modules is in $\widetilde{\mathc…
