In this paper we present a systematic study of the reflexivity properties of homologically finite complexes with respect to semidualizing complexes in the setting of nonlocal rings. One primary focus is the descent of these properties over ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension, presented in terms of inequalities between generalized G-dimensions. Most of these results are new even when the ring homomorphism is local. The main tool for these analyses is a nonlocal version of the amplitude inequality of Iversen, Foxby, and Iyengar. We provide numerous examples demonstrating the need for certain hypotheses and the strictness of many inequalities.
A notion of rigidity with respect to an arbitrary semidualizing complex C over a commutative noetherian ring R is introduced and studied. One of the main result characterizes C-rigid complexes. Specialized to the case when C is the relative dualizing complex of a homomorphism of rings of finite Gorenstein dimension, it leads to broad generalizations of theorems of Yekutieli and Zhang concerning rigid dualizing complexes, in the sense of Van den Bergh. Along the way, a number of new results concerning derived reflexivity with respect to C are established. Noteworthy is the statement that derive…
We investigate the set S(R) of shift-isomorphism classes of semidualizing R-complexes, ordered via the reflexivity relation, where R is a commutative noetherian local ring. Specifically, we study the question of whether S(R$ has cardinality 2^n for some n. We show that, if there is a chain of length n in S(R) and if the reflexivity ordering on S(R) is transitive, then S(R) has cardinality at least 2^n, and we explicitly describe some of its order-structure. We also show that, given a local ring homomorphism f: R\to S of finite flat dimension, if R and S admit dualizing complexes and if f is no…
Let f: A\to B be a ring homomorphism between Noetherian normal integral domains. We establish a general criterion for f to induce a homomorphism Cl(f): Cl(A)\to Cl(B) on divisor class groups. For instance, this criterion applies whenever f has finite flat dimension; this special case generalizes the more classical situations where f is flat or is surjective with kernel generated by an A-regular element. We extend some of Spiroff's work on the kernels of induced maps to this more general setting.
Given a homomorphism of commutative noetherian rings R --> S and an S-module N, it is proved that the Gorenstein flat dimension of N over R, when finite, may be computed locally over S. When, in addition, the homomorphism is local and N is finitely generated over S, the Gorenstein flat dimension equals sup{m | Tor^R_m(E,N) \noteq 0} where E is the injective hull of the residue field of R. This result is analogous to a theorem of André on flat dimension.
Classical definitions of locally complete intersection (l.c.i.) homomorphisms of commutative rings are limited to maps that are essentially of finite type, or flat. The concept introduced in this paper is meaningful for homomorphisms phi : R \longrightarrow S of commutative noetherian rings. It is defined in terms of the structure of phi in a formal neighborhood of each point of Spec S. We characterize the l.c.i. property by different conditions on the vanishing of the André-Quillen homology of the R-algebra S. One of these descriptions establishes a very general form of a conjecture of Quille…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity (not necessarily local) and $\frak a$ a proper ideal of $R$. We study the invariance of some classes of $\frak a$-relative Cohen-Macaulay modules under pure ring homomorphisms and ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension. Our results extend several results in the existing literature on homological modules.
Let $p$ be a prime number. We define the notion of $F$-finiteness of homomorphisms of $\mathbb F_p$-algebras, and discuss some basic properties. In particular, we prove a sort of descent theorem on $F$-finiteness of homomorphisms of $\mathbb F_p$-algebras. As a corollary, we prove the following. Let $g:B\to C$ be a homomorphism of Noetherian $\mathbb F_p$-algebras. If $g$ is faithfully flat reduced, and $C$ is $F$-finite, then $B$ is $F$-finite. This is a generalization of Seydi's result on excellent local rings of characteristic $p$.
We investigate modules for which vanishing of Tor-modules implies finiteness of homological dimensions (e.g., projective dimension and G-dimension). In particular, we answer a question of O. Celikbas and Sather-Wagstaff about ascent properties of such modules over residually algebraic flat local ring homomorphisms. To accomplish this, we consider ascent and descent properties over local ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension, and for flat extensions of finite dimensional differential graded algebras.
Let $R$ be a ring and $M$ be a right $R$-module. $M$ is called neat-flat if any short exact sequence of the form $0\to K\to N\to M\to 0$ is neat-exact i.e. any homomorphism from a simple right $R$-module $S$ to $M$ can be lifted to $N$. We prove that, a module is neat-flat if and only if it is simple-projective. Neat-flat right $R$-modules are projective if and only if $R$ is a right $\sum$-$CS$ ring. Every finitely generated neat-flat right $R$-module is projective if and only if $R$ is a right $C$-ring and every finitely generated free right $R$-module is extending. Every cyclic neat-flat ri…
Let (R,m) -> (S,n) be a flat local homomorphism of excellent local rings. We investigate the conditions under which the weak or strong F-regularity of R passes to S. We show that is suffices that the closed fiber S/mS be Gorenstein and either F-finite (if R and S have a common test element), or F-rational (otherwise).
A central problem in the theory of Gorenstein dimensions over commutative noetherian rings is to find resolution-free characterizations of the modules for which these invariants are finite. Over local rings, this problem was recently solved for the Gorenstein flat and the Gorenstein projective dimensions; here we give a solution for the Gorenstein injective dimension. Moreover, we establish two formulas for the Gorenstein injective dimension of modules in terms of the depth invariant; they extend formulas for the injective dimension due to Bass and Chouinard.
We show that a modification of the proof of a result of Gulliksen gives an elementary proof of the following important theorem by Avramov: if $(A,k) \to (B,l)$ is a homomorphism of noetherian local rings and $B$ is of finite flat dimension over $A$, then the homomorphism induced in André-Quillen homology modules $H_2(A,l,l)\to H_2(B,l,l)$ is injective.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p$ and $f:R\to R$ the Frobenius ring homomorphism. For $e\ge 1$ let $R^{(e)}$ denote the ring $R$ viewed as an $R$-module via $f^e$. Results of Peskine, Szpiro, and Herzog state that for finitely generated modules $M$, $M$ has finite projective dimension if and only if $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(R^{(e)},M)=0$ for all $i>0$ and all (equivalently, infinitely many) $e\ge 1$. We prove this statement holds for arbitrary modules using the theory of flat covers and minimal flat resolutions.
Let $σ:A\rightarrow B$ and $ρ:A\rightarrow C$\ be two homomorphisms of noetherian rings such that $B\otimes_{A}C$ is a noetherian ring. we show that if $σ$ is a regular (resp. complete intersection, resp. Gorenstein, resp. Cohen-Macaulay, resp. $(S_{n}$), resp. almost Cohen-Macaulay) homomorphism, so is $σ\otimes I_{C}$ and the converse is true if $ρ$ is faithfully flat. We deduce the transfert of the previous properties of $B$ and $C$ for $B\otimes_{A}C$, and then for the completed tensor product $B\hat{\otimes}_{A}C$. If $B\otimes_{A}B$ is noetherian and $σ$ is flat, we give a necessary and …
The notions of Betti numbers and of Bass numbers of a finite module N over a local ring R are extended to modules that are only assumed to be finite over S, for some local homomorphism f: R --> S. Various techniques are developed to study the new invariants and to establish their basic properties. In several cases they are computed in closed form. Applications go in several directions. One is to identify new classes of finite R-modules whose classical Betti numbers or Bass numbers have extremal growth. Another is to transfer ring theoretical properties between R and S in situations where S may…
Given a flat local ring homomorphism R\to S, and two finitely generated R-modules M and N, we describe conditions under which the modules Tor^i(M,N) and Ext^i(M,N) have S-module structures that are compatible with their R-module structures.
For homomorphism K-->S of commutative rings, where K is Gorenstein and S is essentially of finite type and flat as a K-module, the property that all non-trivial fiber rings of K-->S are Gorenstein is characterized in terms of properties of the cohomology modules Ext_n^{S\otimes_KS}S{S\otimes_KS}.
We investigate the interplay between properties of Ext modules and ascent of module structures along local ring homomorphisms. Specifically, let f: (R,m,k) -> (S,mS,k) be a flat local ring homomorphism. We show that if M is a finitely generated R-module such that Ext^i(S,M) satisfies NAK (e.g. if Ext^i(S,M) is finitely generated over S) for i=1,...,dim_R(M), then Ext^i(S,M)=0 for all i\neq 0 and M has an S-module structure that is compatible with its R-module structure via f. We provide explicit computations of Ext^1(S,M) to indicate how large it can be when M does not have a compatible S-modu…
Principal affine open subsets in affine schemes are an important tool in the foundations of algebraic geometry. Given a commutative ring $R$, $\,R$-modules built from the rings of functions on principal affine open subschemes in $\operatorname{Spec}R$ using ordinal-indexed filtrations and direct summands are called very flat. The related class of very flat quasi-coherent sheaves over a scheme is intermediate between the classes of locally free and flat sheaves, and has serious technical advantages over both. In this paper we show that very flat modules and sheaves are ubiquitous in algebraic g…
Let R be a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring. Recent work has shown that there is a bridge between Auslander categories and modules of finite Gorenstein homological dimensions over R. We use Gorenstein dimensions to prove new results about Auslander categories and vice versa. For example, we establish base change relations between the Auslander categories of the source and target rings in a homomorphism R -> S of finite flat dimension.
We prove that over a commutative noetherian ring the three approaches to introducing depth for complexes: via Koszul homology, via Ext modules, and via local cohomology, all yield the same invariant. Using this result, we establish a far reaching generalization of the classical Auslander-Buchsbaum formula for the depth of finitely generated modules of finite projective dimension. We extend also Iversen's amplitude inequality to unbounded complexes. As a corollary we deduce: Given a local homomorphism Q-->R, if there is a non-zero finitely generated R-module that has finite flat dimension both …
It is proved that the sum of the Loewy lengths of the homology modules of a finite free complex F over a local ring R is bounded below by a number depending only on R. This result uncovers, in the structure of modules of finite projective dimension, obstructions to realizing R as a closed fiber of some flat local homomorphism. Other applications include, as special cases, uniform proofs of known results on free actions of elementary abelian groups and of tori on finite CW complexes. The arguments use numerical invariants of objects in general triangulated categories, introduced here and called…
Let A be a commutative ring, B a commutative A-algebra and M a complex of B-modules. We begin by constructing the square Sq_{B/A} M, which is also a complex of B-modules. The squaring operation is a quadratic functor, and its construction requires differential graded (DG) algebras. If there exists an isomorphism ρ: M \iso Sq_{B/A} M then the pair (M,ρ) is called a rigid complex over B relative to A (there are some finiteness conditions). There is an obvious notion of rigid morphism between rigid complexes. We establish several properties of rigid complexes, including their uniqueness, existenc…
