It is proved that the sum of the Loewy lengths of the homology modules of a finite free complex F over a local ring R is bounded below by a number depending only on R. This result uncovers, in the structure of modules of finite projective dimension, obstructions to realizing R as a closed fiber of some flat local homomorphism. Other applications include, as special cases, uniform proofs of known results on free actions of elementary abelian groups and of tori on finite CW complexes. The arguments use numerical invariants of objects in general triangulated categories, introduced here and called levels. They allow one to track, through changes of triangulated categories, homological invariants like projective dimension, as well as structural invariants like Loewy length. An intermediate result sharpens, with a new proof, the New Intersection Theorem for commutative algebras over fields. Under additional hypotheses on the ring $R$ stronger estimates are proved for Loewy lengths of modules of finite projective dimension.
For complexes of modules we study two new constructions, which we call the pinched tensor product and the pinched Hom. They provide new methods for computing Tate homology and Tate cohomology, which lead to conceptual proofs of balancedness of Tate (co)homology for modules over associative rings. Another application we consider is in local algebra. Under conditions of vanishing of Tate (co)homology, the pinched tensor product of two minimal complete resolutions yields a minimal complete resolution.
Let C be a semidualizing complex over a noetherian local ring A. If there exists a local homomorphism with source A satisfying some homological properties, then C is dualizing.
Let R be a commutative ring and I an ideal in R which is locally generated by a regular sequence of length d. Then, each projective R/I-module V has an R-projective resolution P. of length d. In this paper, we compute the homology of the n-th Koszul complex associated with the homomorphism P_1 --> P_0 for all n, if d = 1. This computation yields a new proof of the classical Adams-Riemann-Roch formula for regular closed immersions which does not use the deformation to the normal cone any longer. Furthermore, if d = 2, we compute the homology of the complex N Sym^2 K(P.) where K and N denote the…
This work concerns finite free complexes over commutative noetherian rings, in particular over group algebras of elementary abelian groups. The main contribution is the construction of complexes such that the total rank of their underlying free modules, or the total length of their homology, is less than predicted by various conjectures in the theory of transformation groups and in local algebra.
For a simplicial complex X on {1,2, ..., n} we define enriched homology and cohomology modules. They are graded modules over k[x_1, ..., x_n] whose ranks are equal to the dimensions of the reduced homology and cohomology groups. We characterize Cohen-Macaulay, l-Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum, and Gorenstein* complexes X, and also orientable manifolds in terms of the enriched modules. We introduce the notion of girth for simplicial complexes and make a conjecture relating the girth to invariants of the simplicial complex. We also put strong vanishing conditions on the enriched homology modules and …
Let $M$ be a finite module over a noetherian ring $R$ with a free resolution of length 1. We consider the generalized Koszul complexes $\mathcal{C}_{\barλ}(t)$ associated with a map $\barλ:M\to\mathcal{H}$ into a finite free $R$-module $\mathcal{H}$ (see [IV], section 3), and investigate the homology of $\mathcal{C}_{\barλ}(t)$ in the special setup when $\grade I_M=\rank M=\dim R$. ($I_M$ is the first non-vanishing Fitting ideal of $M$.) In this case the (interesting) homology of $\mathcal{C}_{\barλ}(t)$ has finite length, and we deduce some length formulas. As an application we give a short a…
This thesis is comprised of three chapters. The first chapter deals with bounded complexes of Gorenstein projective and Gorenstein injective modules. Deploying methods of relative homological algebra, we approximate such complexes with bounded complexes of projective and injective modules, respectively. As an application, we investigate the Gorenstein version of the New Intersection Theorem. The second chapter studies the notion of cofiniteness for modules and complexes set forth by Hartshorne. Recruiting techniques of derived category, we study this notion thoroughly, obtain novel results, an…
Given a double complex $X$ there are spectral sequences with the $E_2$ terms being either H$_I$ (H$_{II}(X))$ or H$_{II}($H$_I (X))$. But if $H_I(X)=H_{II}(X)=0$ both spectral sequences have all their terms 0. This can happen even though there is nonzero (co)homology of interest associated with $X$. This is frequently the case when dealing with Tate (co)homology. So in this situation the spectral sequences may not give any information about the (co)homology of interest. In this article we give a different way of constructing homology groups of $X$ when H$_I(X)=$H$_{II}(X)=0$. With this result …
Let $Δ$ be a connected, pure $2$-dimensional simplicial complex embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and let $C^{r}(\hatΔ)$ be the homogenized spline module of $Δ$ with smoothness $r$. To study $C^{r}(\hatΔ)$, Schenck and Stillman developed the spline complex $S_\bullet/J_\bullet$. Schenck and Stiller conjectured that the regularity of $H_1(S_\bullet/J_\bullet)$ is less than $2r+1$. In this article, we first consider the case when $Δ$ has only one totally interior edge, because it is the simplest non-trivial case. Then we may apply the formula we find here to get an upper bound on some more general case…
Let $R$ be a standard graded commutative algebra over a field $k$, let $K$ be its Koszul complex viewed as a differential graded $k$-algebra, and let $H$ be the homology algebra of $K$. This paper studies the interplay between homological properties of the three algebras $R$, $K$, and $H$. In particular, we introduce two definitions of Koszulness that extend the familiar property originally introduced by Priddy: one which applies to $K$ (and, more generally, to any connected differential graded $k$-algebra) and the other, called strand-Koszulness, which applies to $H$. The main theoretical res…
Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over a field $k$. We prove an Auslander-Buchsbaum formula for the absolute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, extending important cases of previous works of Chardin and Römer. For a bounded complex of finitely generated graded $R$-modules $L$, we prove the equality $\text{reg}~ L=\max_{i\in \mathbb Z} \{\text{reg}~ H_i(L)-i\}$ given the condition $\text{depth}~ H_i(L)\ge \dim H_{i+1}(L)-1$ for all $i<\sup L$. As applications, we recover previous bounds on regularity of Tor due to Caviglia, Eisenbud-Huneke-Ulrich, among others. We also obtain strengthened resul…
We describe Koszul type complexes associated with a linear map from any module to a free module, and vice versa with a linear map from a free module to an arbitrary module, generalizing the classical Koszul complexes. Given a short complex of finite free modules, we assemble these complexes to what we call Koszul bicomplexes. They are used in order to investigate the homology of the Koszul complexes in projective dimension one. As in the case of the classical Koszul complexes this homology turns out to be grade sensitive. In a special setup we obtain necessary conditions for a map of free modu…
Let V be a symplectic vector space of dimension 2n. Given a partition λwith at most n parts, there is an associated irreducible representation S_{[λ]}(V) of Sp(V). This representation admits a resolution by a natural complex L^λ, which we call the Littlewood complex, whose terms are restrictions of representations of GL(V). When λhas more than n parts, the representation S_{[λ]}(V) is not defined, but the Littlewood complex L^λstill makes sense. The purpose of this paper is to compute its homology. We find that either L^λis acyclic or that it has a unique non-zero homology group, which forms a…
