Let (R,m) be a Noetherian local ring of depth d and C a semidualizing R-complex. Let M be a finite R-module and t an integer between 0 and d. If G_C-dimension of M/IM is finite for all ideals I generated by an R-regular sequence of length at most d-t then either G_C-dimension of M is at most t or C is a dualizing complex. Analogous results for other homological dimensions are also given.
A question of Avramov and Foxby concerning injective dimension of complexes is settled in the affirmative for the class of noetherian rings. A key step in the proof is to recast the problem on hand into one about the homotopy category of complexes of injective modules. Analogous results for flat dimension and projective dimension are also established.
The use of homological and homotopical devices, such as Tor and André-Quillen homology, have found substantial use in characterizing commutative algebras. The primary category setting has been differentially graded algebras and modules, but recently simplicial categories have also proved to be useful settings. In this paper, we take this point of view up a notch by extending some recent uses of homological algebra in characterizing Noetherian commutative algebras to characterizing simplicial commutative algebras having finite Noetherian homotopy through the use of simplicial homotopy theory. Let $R$ be a commutative ring. An $R$-module $M$ is called a semi-regular $w$-flat module if $\Tor_1^R(R/I,M)$ is $\GV$-torsion for any finitely generated semi-regular ideal $I$. In this article, we show that the class of semi-regular $w$-flat modules is a covering class. Utilizing these notions, we give some homological characterizations of $\WQ$-rings and $Q_0$-\PvMR s.
Bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of Ext modules, over a polynomial ring over a field, are given in terms of the initial degrees, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities and number of generators of the two graded modules involved. These general bounds are refined in the case the second module is the ring. Other estimates, for instance on the size of graded pieces of these modules, are given. We also derive a bound on the homological degree in terms of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. This answers positively a question raised by Vasconcelos.
We study the homological behavior of modules over local rings modulo exact zero-divisors. We obtain new results which are in some sense "opposite" to those known for modules over local rings modulo regular elements.
Regularity, complete intersection and Gorenstein properties of a local ring can be characterized by homological conditions on the canonical homomorphism into its residue field (Serre, Avramov, Auslander). It is also known that in positive characteristic, the Frobenius endomorphism can also be used for these characterizations (Kunz, ...), and more generally any contracting endomorphism. We introduce here a class of local homomorphisms, in some sense larger than all above, for which these characterizations still hold, providing an unified treatment for this class of homomorphisms.
We study the regularity and the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a $k$-decomposable simplicial complex and explain these invariants with a recursive formula. To this aim, the graded Betti numbers of $k$-decomposable monomial ideals which is the dual concept for $k$-decomposable simplicial complexes are studied and an inductive formula for the Betti numbers is given. As a corollary, for a chordal clutter $\mathcal{H}$, an upper bound for $reg(I(\mathcal{H}))$ is given in terms of the regularities of edge ideals of some chordal clutters which are minors of $\mathcal{H}$.
We make use of the concepts of Tor-rigid and rigid-test modules, among others, to investigate the interplay between cohomology vanishing and the finiteness of several homological dimensions such as projective, injective and Gorenstein injective dimensions. Besides criteria for the freeness of modules, the applications include new characterizations of Gorenstein and regular local rings, which are also of interest in the realm of algebraic geometry.
It is proved that when R is a local ring of positive characteristic, $ϕ$ is its Frobenius endomorphism, and some non-zero finite R-module has finite flat dimension or finite injective dimension for the R-module structure induced through $ϕ$, then R is regular. This broad generalization of Kunz's characterization of regularity in positive characteristic is deduced from a theorem concerning a local ring R with residue field of k of arbitrary characteristic: If $ϕ$ is a contracting endomorphism of R, then the Betti numbers and the Bass numbers over $ϕ$ of any non-zero finitely generated R-module …
We identify families of commutative rings that can be written as a direct limit of a directed system of noetherian regular rings and investigate the homological properties of such rings.
This is a survey on the relation between homological properties of the Frobenius endomorphism and finiteness of various homological dimensions of the ring or of modules over it, such as global dimension and projective dimension. We begin with Kunz's surprising result in 1969 that the regularity of a Noetherian local ring is equivalent to the flatness of its Frobenius endomorphism, as well as the subsequent generalizations to the module setting by Peskine and Szpiro and continue up through the recent flurry of results in the last five years. An attempt is made to include proofs whenever feasibl…
We obtain various characterizations of commutative Noetherian local rings $(R, \fm)$ in terms of homological dimensions of certain finitely generated modules. For example, we establish that $R$ is Gorenstein if the Gorenstein injective dimension of the maximal ideal $\fm$ of $R$ is finite. Furthermore we prove that $R$ must be regular if a single $\Ext_{R}^{n}(I,J)$ vanishes for some integrally closed $\fm$-primary ideals $I$ and $J$ of $R$ and for some integer $n\geq \dim(R)$. Along the way we observe that local rings that admit maximal Cohen-Macaulay Tor-rigid modules are Cohen-Macaulay.
Let $R$ and $S$ be standard graded algebras over a field $k$, and $I \subseteq R$ and $J \subseteq S$ homogeneous ideals. Denote by $P$ the sum of the extensions of $I$ and $J$ to $R\otimes_k S$. We investigate several important homological invariants of powers of $P$ based on the information about $I$ and $J$, with focus on finding the exact formulas for these invariants. Our investigation exploits certain Tor vanishing property of natural inclusion maps between consecutive powers of $I$ and $J$. As a consequence, we provide fairly complete information about the depth and regularity of powers…
In this paper we study homological properties of the Rees ring R of the graded maximal ideal of a standard graded k-algebra A. In particular we are interested the comparison of the depth and regularity of A and R.
The Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid can be considered as a quotient ring over the exterior algebra E. At first we study homological properties of E-modules as e.g. complexity, depth and regularity. In particular, we consider modules with linear injective resolutions. We apply our results to Orlik-Solomon algebras of matroids and give formulas for the complexity, depth and regularity of such rings in terms of invariants of the matroid. Moreover, we characterize those matroids whose Orlik-Solomon ideal has a linear projective resolution and compute in these cases the Betti numbers of the idea…
We study homological properties of a locally complete intersection ring by importing facts from homological algebra over exterior algebras. One application is showing that the thick subcategories of the bounded derived category of a locally complete intersection ring are self-dual under Grothendieck duality. This was proved by Stevenson when the ring is a quotient of a regular ring modulo a regular sequence; we offer two independent proofs in the more general setting. Second, we use these techniques to supply new proofs that complete intersections possess symmetry of complexity.
This paper studies characterizing local rings in terms of homological dimensions. The key tool is the notion of a prethick subcategory which we introduce in this paper. Our methods recover the theorems of Salarian, Sather-Wagstaff and Yassemi.
This paper main goal is to measure the defect of Cohen-Macaulayness, Gorensteiness, complete intersection and regularity for the tensor product of algebras over a ring. For this sake, we determine the homological invariants which are inherent to these notions, such as the Krull dimension, depth, injective dimension, type and embedding dimension of the tensor product constructions in terms of those of their components.
This paper contributes to the study of homological aspects of trivial ring extensions (also called Nagata idealizations). Namely, we investigate the transfer of the notion of (Matlis') semi-regular ring (also known as IF-ring) along with related concepts, such as coherence, in trivial ring extensions issued from integral domains. All along the paper, we put the new results in use to enrich the literature with new families of examples subject to semi-regularity.
Let $R$ be a ring and $S$ a multiplicative subset of $R$. An $R$-module $T$ is called $u$-$S$-torsion ($u$- always abbreviates uniformly) provided that $sT=0$ for some $s\in S$. The notion of $u$-$S$-exact sequences is also introduced from the viewpoint of uniformity. An $R$-module $F$ is called $u$-$S$-flat provided that the induced sequence $0\rightarrow A\otimes_RF\rightarrow B\otimes_RF\rightarrow C\otimes_RF\rightarrow 0$ is $u$-$S$-exact for any $u$-$S$-exact sequence $0\rightarrow A\rightarrow B\rightarrow C\rightarrow 0$. A ring $R$ is called $u$-$S$-von Neumann regular provided there …
Lower bounds on Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity are known for several types of commutative noetherian local rings, and rings with multiplicities which achieve these lower bounds are said to have minimal multiplicity. The first part of this paper gives characterizations of rings of minimal multiplicity in terms of the Ext-algebra of the ring; in particular, we show that minimal multiplicity can be detected via an Ext-algebra which is Gorenstein or Koszul AS-regular. The second part of this paper characterizes rings of minimal multiplicity via a numerical homological invariant introduced by J. Herzo…
Let $R$ and $S$ be polynomial rings of positive dimensions over a field $k$. Let $I\subseteq R, J\subseteq S$ be non-zero homogeneous ideals none of which contains a linear form. Denote by $F$ the fiber product of $I$ and $J$ in $T=R\otimes_k S$. We compute homological invariants of the powers of $F$ using the data of $I$ and $J$. Under the assumption that either $\text{char}~ k=0$ or $I$ and $J$ are monomial ideals, we provide explicit formulas for the depth and regularity of powers of $F$. In particular, we establish for all $s\ge 2$ the intriguing formula $\text{depth}(T/F^s)=0$. If moreove…
A not necessarily noetherian local ring O is called regular if every finitely generated ideal I of O possesses finite projective dimension. In the article localizations O of a finitely presented, flat algebra A over a Pruefer domain R at a prime q are investigated with respect to regularity: this property of O is shown to be equivalent to the finiteness of the weak homological dimension wdim(O). A formula to compute wdim(O) is provided. Furthermore regular sequences within the maximal ideal M of O are studied: it is shown that regularity of O implies the existence of a maximal regular sequence…
Koszul modules over Noetherian local rings $R$ were introduced by Herzog and Iyengar and they possess good homological properties, for instance their Poincare' series is rational. It is an interesting problem to characterize classes of Koszul modules. Following the idea traced by Avramov, Iyengar and Sega, we take advantage of the existence of special filtration on $R$ for proving that large classes of $R$-modules over Koszul rings are Koszul modules. By using this tool we reprove and extend some results obtained by Fitzgerald.
Differential graded algebra techniques have played a crucial role in the development of homological algebra, especially in the study of homological properties of commutative rings carried out by Serre, Tate, Gulliksen, Avramov, and others. In this article, we extend the construction of the Koszul complex and acyclic closure to a more general setting. As an application of our constructions, we shine some light on the structure of the Ext algebra of quotients of skew polynomial rings by ideals generated by normal elements. As a consequence, we give a presentation of the Ext algebra when the elem…
