This is a survey on the relation between homological properties of the Frobenius endomorphism and finiteness of various homological dimensions of the ring or of modules over it, such as global dimension and projective dimension. We begin with Kunz's surprising result in 1969 that the regularity of a Noetherian local ring is equivalent to the flatness of its Frobenius endomorphism, as well as the subsequent generalizations to the module setting by Peskine and Szpiro and continue up through the recent flurry of results in the last five years. An attempt is made to include proofs whenever feasible.
Let $R$ be a local ring of positive characteristic and $X$ a complex with nonzero finitely generated homology and finite injective dimension. We prove that if derived base change of $X$ via the Frobenius (or more generally, via a contracting) endomorphism has finite injective dimension then $R$ is Gorenstein.
It is proved that when R is a local ring of positive characteristic, $ϕ$ is its Frobenius endomorphism, and some non-zero finite R-module has finite flat dimension or finite injective dimension for the R-module structure induced through $ϕ$, then R is regular. This broad generalization of Kunz's characterization of regularity in positive characteristic is deduced from a theorem concerning a local ring R with residue field of k of arbitrary characteristic: If $ϕ$ is a contracting endomorphism of R, then the Betti numbers and the Bass numbers over $ϕ$ of any non-zero finitely generated R-module …
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay local ring that has positive dimension and prime characteristic. Li proved that the tensor product of a finitely generated non-free $R$-module $M$ with the Frobenius endomorphism ${}^{φ^n}\!R$ is not maximal Cohen-Macaulay provided that $M$ has rank and $n\gg 0$. We replace the rank hypothesis with the weaker assumption that $M$ is locally free on the minimal prime ideals of $R$. As a consequence, we obtain, if $R$ is a one-dimensional non-regular complete reduced local ring that has a perfect residue field and prime characteristic, then ${}^{…

It is well-known that for a large class of local rings of positive characteristic, including complete intersection rings, the Frobenius endomorphism can be used as a test for finite projective dimension. In this paper, we exploit this property to study the structure of such rings. One of our results states that the Picard group of the punctured spectrum of such a ring $R$ cannot have $p$-torsion. When $R$ is a local complete intersection, this recovers (with a purely local algebra proof) an analogous statement for complete intersections in projective spaces first given in SGA and also a specia…
It is proved that a module $M$ over a Noetherian ring $R$ of positive characteristic $p$ has finite flat dimension if there exists an integer $t\ge 0$ such that $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(M, {}^{f^{e}}\!R)=0$ for $t\le i\le t+\dim R$ and infinitely many $e$. This extends a result of Herzog, who proved it when $M$ is finitely generated, and strengthens a result of the third author and Webb in the case $M$ is arbitrary. It is also proved that when $R$ is a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, it suffices that the Tor vanishing holds for one $e\ge \log_{p}e(R)$, where $e(R)$ is the multiplicity of $R$.
We develop a theory of G-dimension for modules over local homomorphisms which encompasses the classical theory of G-dimension for finite modules over local rings. As an application, we prove that a local ring R of characteristic p is Gorenstein if and only if it possesses a nonzero finite module of finite projective dimension that has finite G-dimension when considered as an R-module via some power of the Frobenius endomorphism of R. We also prove results that track the behavior of Gorenstein properties of local homomorphisms under (de)composition.
Let $R=\mathbb{K}[X_1, \ldots , X_n ]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$. We introduce an endomorphism $\mathcal{F}^{[m]}: R \rightarrow R $ and denote the image of an ideal $I$ of $R$ via this endomorphism as $I^{[m]}$ and call it to be the $m$ \textit{-th square power} of $I$. In this article, we study some homological invariants of $I^{[m]}$ such as regularity, projective dimension, associated primes and depth for some families of ideals e.g. monomial ideals.
It is proved that a module $M$ over a Noetherian local ring $R$ of prime characteristic and positive dimension has finite flat dimension if Tor$_i^R({}^e R, M)=0$ for dim $R$ consecutive positive values of $i$ and infinitely many $e$. Here ${}^e R$ denotes the ring $R$ viewed as an $R$-module via the $e$th iteration of the Frobenius endomorphism. In the case $R$ is Cohen-Macualay, it suffices that the Tor vanishing above holds for a single $e\geq \log_p e(R)$, where $e(R)$ is the multiplicity of the ring. This improves a result of D. Dailey, S. Iyengar, and the second author, as well as genera…
We prove several characterizations of Gorenstein rings in terms of vanishings of derived functors of certain modules or complexes whose scalars are restricted via contracting endomorphisms. These results can be viewed as analogues of results of Kunz (in the case of the Frobenius) and Avramov-Hochster-Iyengar-Yao (in the case of general contracting endomorphisms).
Regularity, complete intersection and Gorenstein properties of a local ring can be characterized by homological conditions on the canonical homomorphism into its residue field (Serre, Avramov, Auslander). It is also known that in positive characteristic, the Frobenius endomorphism can also be used for these characterizations (Kunz, ...), and more generally any contracting endomorphism. We introduce here a class of local homomorphisms, in some sense larger than all above, for which these characterizations still hold, providing an unified treatment for this class of homomorphisms.
The Frobenius depth denoted by F-depth defined by Hartshorne-Speiser in 1977 and later by Lyubeznik in 2006, in a different way, for rings of positive characteristic. The first aim of the present paper is to compare the F-depth with formal grade and reprove some results of Lyubeznik using formal local cohomology. Then the endomorphism rings of local cohomology modules will be considered. As an application, we reprove the results due to Huneke-Koh in positive characteristic and Lyubeznik in characteristic zero on the annihilators of local cohomology modules.
Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over an $F$-finite field of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $ϕ:R\to R$ be the Frobenius endomorphism. For each finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$, let ${}^ϕ\!M$ be the abelian group $M$ with the $R$-module structure induced by the Frobenius endomorphism. The $R$-module ${}^ϕ\!M$ has a natural grading given by $\text{deg} x=j$ if $x\in M_{jp+i}$ for some $0\le i \le p-1$. In this paper, we prove that $R$ is Koszul if and only if there exists a non-zero finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$ such that $\text{reg}_R\,{}^ϕ\!M <\infty$. This result supplies …
If $X$ is a smooth scheme over a perfect field of characteristic $p$, and if $\sD_X$ is the sheaf of differential operators on $X$ [EGAIV], it is well known that giving an action of $\sD_X$ on an $\sO_X$-module $\sE$ is equivalent to giving an infinite sequence of $\sO_X$-modules descending $\sE$ via the iterates of the Frobenius endomorphism of $X$. We show that this result can be generalized to any infinitesimal deformation $f : X \to S$ of a smooth morphism in characteristic $p$, endowed with Frobenius liftings. We also show that it extends to adic formal schemes such that $p$ belongs to an…
This is an introduction to the theory of Witt vectors. It includes a construction of the Witt rings, the Frobenius and Verschiebung endomorphisms, the canonical map from W to W^2 (its lambda-algebra structure), the relation to strict p-rings, and an account of the Artin-Hasse exponential.
Local and category-theoretical entropies associated with an endomorphism of finite length (i.e., with zero-dimensional closed fiber) of a commutative Noetherian local ring are compared. Local entropy is shown to be less than or equal to category-theoretical entropy. The two entropies are shown to be equal when the ring is regular, and also for the Frobenius endomorphism of a complete local ring of positive characteristic. Furthermore, given a flat morphism of Cohen-Macaulay local rings endowed with compatible endomorphisms of finite length, it is shown that local entropy is "additive". Finally…
Given a good $n$-tilting module $T$ over a ring $A$, let $B$ be the endomorphism ring of $T$, it is an open question whether the kernel of the left-derived functor $T\otimes^L_B-$ between the derived module categories of $B$ and $A$ could be realized as the derived module category of a ring $C$ via a ring epimorphism $B\rightarrow C$ for $n\ge 2$. In this paper, we first provide a uniform way to deal with the above question both for tilting and cotilting modules by considering a new class of modules called Ringel modules, and then give criterions for the kernel of $T\otimes^L_B-$ to be equival…
It is shown in a local strongly $F$-regular ring there exits natural number $e_0$ so that if $M$ is any finitely generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay module then the pushforward of $M$ under the $e_0$th iterate of the Frobenius endomorphism contains a free summand. Consequently, the torsion subgroup of the divisor class group of a local strongly $F$-regular ring is finite.
