We explicitly describe the divisor class groups and semidualizing modules for ladder determinantal rings with coefficients in an arbitrary normal domain for arbitrary ladders, not necessarily connected, and all sizes of minors.
We identify all semidualizing modules over certain classes of ladder determinantal rings over a field ${\mathsf k}$. Specifically, given a ladder of variables $Y$, we show that the ring ${\mathsf k}[Y]/I_t(Y)$ has only trivial semidualizing modules up to isomorphism in the following cases: (1) $Y$ is a one-sided ladder, and (2) $Y$ is a two-sided ladder with $t=2$ and no coincidental inside corners.
We continue our study of ladder determinantal rings over a field $\mathsf k$ from the perspective of semidualizing modules. In particular, given a ladder of variables $Y$, we show that the associated ladder determinantal ring $\mathsf k[Y]/I_2(Y)$ admits exactly $2^n$ non-isomorphic semidualizing modules where $n$ is determined from the combinatorics of the ladder $Y$: the number $n$ is essentially the number of non-Gorenstein factors in a certain decomposition of $Y$. From this, for each $n$, we show explicitly how to find ladders $Y$ such that $\mathsf k[Y]/I_2(Y)$ admits exactly $2^n$ non-i…
We solve the problem of effectively computing the $a$-invariant of ladder determinantal rings. In the case of a one-sided ladder, we provide a compact formula, while, for a large family of two-sided ladders, we provide an algorithmic solution.

We study the family of ideals defined by mixed size minors of two-sided ladders of indeterminates. We compute their Groebner bases with respect to a skew-diagonal monomial order, then we use them to compute the height of the ideals. We show that these ideals correspond to a family of irreducible projective varieties, that we call mixed ladder determinantal varieties. We show that these varieties are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. We characterize the arithmetically Gorenstein ones, among those that satisfy a technical condition. Our main result consists in proving that mixed ladder determinanta…
We show that the h-vector of a ladder determinantal ring cogenerated by M=[u_1|v_1] is log-concave. Thus we prove an instance of a conjecture of Stanley, resp. Conca and Herzog
We give a formula that expresses the Hilbert series of one-sided ladder determinantal rings, up to a trivial factor, in form of a determinant. This allows the convenient computation of these Hilbert series. The formula follows from a determinantal formula for a generating function for families of nonintersecting lattice paths that stay inside a one-sided ladder-shaped region, in which the paths are counted with respect to turns.
We give degree formulas for Grothendieck polynomials indexed by vexillary permutations and $1432$-avoiding permutations via tableau combinatorics. These formulas generalize a formula for degrees of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials which appeared in previous joint work of the authors with Y. Ren and A. St. Dizier. We apply our formulas to compute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of classes of generalized determinantal ideals. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularities of all one-sided mixed ladder determinantal ideals. We also derive formulas for the regularities of cert…
We provide a characterization of the almost Gorenstein property of determinantal rings of a symmetric matrix of indeterminates over an infinite field. We give an explicit formula for ranks of the last two modules in the resolution of determinantal rings using Schur functors.
In this paper, we derive several formulas of counting families of non-intersecting paths for two-sided ladder-shaped regions. As an application, we give a new proof to a combinatorial interpretation of Fibonacci numbers obtained by G. Andrews in 1974.
We study initial algebras of determinantal rings, defined by minors of generic matrices, with respect to their classical generic point. This approach leads to very short proofs for the structural properties of determinantal rings. Moreover, it allows us to classify their Cohen-Macaulay and Ulrich ideals.
In this paper we investigate the question of when the determinantal ring $R$ over a field $k$ is an almost Gorenstein local/graded ring in the sense of Goto, Takahashi, and the author. As a consequence of the main result, we see that if $R$ is a non-Gorenstein almost Gorenstein local/graded ring, then the ring $R$ has a minimal multiplicity.
We compute the canonical trace of generic determinantal rings and provide a sufficient condition for the trace to specialize. As an application we determine the canonical trace $\mbox{tr}(ω_R)$ of a Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ of codimension two, which is generically Gorenstein. It is shown that if the defining ideal $I$ of $R$ is generated by $n$ elements, then $\mbox{tr}(ω_R)$ is generated by the $(n-2)$-minors of the Hilbert-Burch matrix of $I$.
We compute the Frobenius complexity for the determinantal ring of prime characteristic $p$ obtained by modding out the $2 \times 2$ minors of an $m \times n$ matrix of indeterminates, where $m > n \ge 2$. We also show that, as $p \to \infty$, the Frobenius complexity approaches $m-1$.
We determine the defining equations of the Rees algebra and of the special fiber ring of the ideal of maximal minors of a $2\times n$ sparse matrix. We prove that their initial algebras are ladder determinantal rings. This allows us to show that the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring are Cohen-Macaulay domains, they are Koszul, they have rational singularities in characteristic zero and are F-rational in positive characteristic.
For given integers $m,n \geq 2$ there are examples of ideals $I$ of complete determinantal local rings $(R,\mathfrak{m}), \dim R = m+n-1, \operatorname{grade} I = n-1,$ with the canonical module $ω_R$ and the property that the socle dimensions of $H^{m+n-2}_I(ω_R)$ and $H^m_{\mathfrak{m}}(H^{n-1}_I(ω_R))$ are not finite. In the case of $m = n$, i.e. a Gorenstein ring, the socle dimensions provide further information about the $τ$-numbers as studied in \cite{MS}. Moreover, the endomorphism ring of $H^{n-1}_I(ω_R)$ is studied and shown to be an $R$-algebra of finite type but not finitely generat…
Hankel determinantal rings, i.e., determinantal rings defined by minors of Hankel matrices of indeterminates, arise as homogeneous coordinate rings of higher order secant varieties of rational normal curves; they may also be viewed as linear specializations of generic determinantal rings. We prove that, over fields of characteristic zero, Hankel determinantal rings have rational singularities; in the case of positive prime characteristic, we prove that they are F-pure. Independent of the characteristic, we give a complete description of the divisor class groups of these rings, and show that ea…
We provide new results on the vanishing of local cohomology modules supported at ideals of minors of matrices over arbitrary commutative Noetherian rings. In the process, we compute the local cohomology of rings of polynomials with integer coefficients---supported at generic determinantal ideals---and also obtain results on F-modules and D-modules that are likely to be of independent interest.
Let $k[X] = k[x_{i,j}: i = 1,..., m; j = 1,..., n]$ be the polynomial ring in $m n$ variables $x_{i,j}$ over a field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic. Denote by $I_2(X)$ the ideal generated by the $2 \times 2$ minors of the generic $m \times n$ matrix $[x_{i,j}]$. We give a closed formulation for the dimensions of the $k$-vector space $k[X]/(I_2(X) + (x_{1,1}^q,..., x_{m,n}^q))$ as $q$ varies over all positive integers, i.e., we give a closed form for the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function of the determinantal ring $k[X]/I_{2}[X]$. We also give a closed formulation of dimensions of related quoti…
We consider ideals of minors of a matrix, ideals of minors of a symmetric matrix, and ideals of Pfaffians of an alternating matrix. Assuming these ideals are of generic height, we characterize the condition $G_{s}$ for these ideals in terms of the heights of other ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the same matrix. We additionally obtain bounds on the generation and concentration degrees of the Rees rings of a subclass of such ideals via specialization of the Rees rings in the generic case. We do this by proving, given sufficient height conditions on ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the matrix, …
This article generalizes joint work of the first author and I. Swanson to the $s$-multiplicity recently introduced by the second author. For $k$ a field and $X = [ x_{i,j}]$ a $m \times n$-matrix of variables, we utilize Gröbner bases to give a closed form the length $λ( k[X] / (I_2(X) + \mathfrak{m}^{ \lceil sq \rceil} + \mathfrak{m}^{[q]} ))$ where $s \in \mathbf{Z}[p^{-1}]$, $q$ is a sufficiently large power of $p$, and $\mathfrak{m}$ is the homogeneous maximal ideal of $k[X]$. This shows this length is always eventually a {\it polynomial} function of $q$ for all $s$.
Motivated by a work of Knutson, in a recent paper Conca and Varbaro have defined a new class of ideals, namely "Knutson ideals", starting from a polynomial $f$ with squarefree leading term. We will show that the main properties that this class has in polynomial rings over fields of characteristic $p$ are preserved when one introduces the definition of Knutson ideal also in polynomial rings over fields of characteristic zero. Then we will show that determinantal ideals of Hankel matrices are Knutson ideals for a suitable choice of the polynomial $f$.
In this paper, we state criteria of a Hibi ring to be level, non-Gorenstein and almost Gorenstein and to be non-level and almost Gorenstein in terms of the structure of the partially ordered set defining the Hibi ring. We also state a criterion of a ladder determinantal ring defined by 2-minors to be non-Gorenstein and almost Gorenstein in terms of the shape of the ladder.
We give an explicit recipe for determining iterated local cohomology groups with support in ideals of minors of a generic matrix in characteristic zero, expressing them as direct sums of indecomposable D-modules. For non-square matrices these indecomposables are simple, but this is no longer true for square matrices where the relevant indecomposables arise from the pole order filtration associated with the determinant hypersurface. Specializing our results to a single iteration, we determine the Lyubeznik numbers for all generic determinantal rings, thus answering a question of Hochster.
We give an introduction to the theory of determinantal ideals and rings, their Groebner bases, initial ideals and algebras, respectively. The approach is based on the straightening law and the Knuth-Robinson-Schensted correspondence. The article contains a section treating the basic results about the passage to initial ideals and algebras.
Let R be a local ring of prime characteristic. We study the ring of Frobenius operators F(E), where E is the injective hull of the residue field of R. In particular, we examine the finite generation of F(E) over its degree zero component, and show that F(E) need not be finitely generated when R is a determinantal ring; nonetheless, we obtain concrete descriptions of F(E) in good generality that we use, for example, to prove the discreteness of F-jumping numbers for arbitrary ideals in determinantal rings.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. Let $X$ be a $2\times e$ matrix of linear forms over a polynomial ring $k[\mathsf{x}_1, \ldots,\mathsf{x}_n]$ (where $e,n\ge 1$). We prove that the determinantal ring $R = k[\mathsf{x}_1,\ldots,\mathsf{x}_n]/I_2(X)$ is Koszul if and only if in the Kronecker-Weierstrass normal form of $X$, the largest length of a nilpotent block is at most twice the smallest length of a scroll block. As an application, we classify rational normal scrolls whose all section rings by natural coordinates are Koszul. This result settles a conjecture due…
Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring and $m$ a positive integer. Let $I$ be the ideal of $R$ generated by the maximal minors of an $m \times (m + 1)$ matrix $M$ with entries in $R$. Assuming that the grade of the ideal generated by the $k$-minors of $M$ is at least $m - k + 2$ for $1 \leq \forall k \leq m$, we will study the associated primes of $I^n$ for $\forall n > 0$. Moreover, we compute the saturation of $I^n$ for $1 \leq \forall n \leq m$ in the case where $R$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ring and the entries of $M$ are powers of elements that form an sop for $R$.
We investigate some general machinery for describing semidualizing modules over generic constructions like ladder determinantal rings with coefficients in a normal domain. We also pose and investigate natural localization questions that arise in the process.
We study higher order determinantal varieties obtained by considering generic $m\times n$ ($m \le n$) matrices over rings of the form $F[t]/(t^k)$, and for some fixed $r$, setting the coefficients of powers of $t$ of all $r \times r$ minors to zero. These varieties can be interpreted as generalized tangent bundles over the classical determinantal varieties; a special case of these varieties first appeared in a problem in commuting matrices. We show that when $r = m$, the varieties are irreducible, but when $r < m$, these varieties have at least $\lfloor {k/2}\rfloor + 1$ components. In fact, w…

Let GradAlg(H) be the scheme parameterizing graded quotients of R=k[x_0,...,x_n] with Hilbert function H (it is a subscheme of the Hilbert scheme of P^n if we restrict to quotients of positive dimension, see definition below). A graded quotient A=R/I of codimension c is called standard determinantal if the ideal I can be generated by the t by t minors of a homogeneous t by (t+c-1) matrix (f_{ij}). Given integers a_0\le a_1\le ...\le a_{t+c-2} and b_1\le ...\le b_t, we denote by W_s(\underline{b};\underline{a}) the stratum of GradAlg(H) of determinantal rings where f_{ij} \in R are homogeneous …
Let $S=\mathbb{C}[x_{ij}]$ be a polynomial ring of $m\times n$ variables over $\mathbb{C}$ and let $I$ be the determinantal ideal of maximal minors of $S$. Using the representation theoretic techniques introduced in arXiv:1305.1719, arXiv:1309.0617 and arXiv:1611.00415, we prove the existence of the generalized $j$-multiplicities $ε^j(I)$ defined by Dao and Montaño in arXiv:1705.05033. We will also give a closed formula of $ε^j(I)$, which generalized the results in arXiv:1308.0582 and arXiv:1912.02917 in the maximal minors case.
Let k be an arbitrary field (of arbitrary characteristic) and let X = [x_{i,j}] be a generic m x n matrix of variables. Denote by I_2(X) the ideal in k[X] = k[x_{i,j}: i = 1, ..., m; j = 1, ..., n] generated by the 2 x 2 minors of X. We give a recursive formulation for the lengths of the k[X]-module k[X]/(I_2(X) + (x_{1,1}^q,..., x_{m,n}^q)) as q varies over all positive integers using Grobner basis. This is a generalized Hilbert-Kunz function, and our formulation proves that it is a polynomial function in q. We give closed forms for the cases when m is at most 2, %as well as the closed forms …
We deduce results on the dimension and connectedness of degeneracy loci of maps of finite modules $f:M\to N$ over a local noetherian ring $(A,{\mathfrak m})$. We show for instance that the expected determinantal bounds on the dimension of the t-$th$ degeneracy locus of $f$ hold if $f\in {\mathfrak m} Hom (M,N)$, and that this degeneracy locus is connected in the expected dimension provided $\hat A$ is a domain.
Let $S=\mathbb{C}[x_{ij}]$ be a polynomial ring of $m\times n$ generic variables (resp. a polynomial ring of $(2n+1) \times (2n+1)$ skew-symmetric variables) over $\mathbb{C}$ and let $I$ (resp. Pf) be the determinantal ideal of maximal minors (resp. sub-maximal pfaffians) of $S$. Using the representation theoretic techniques introduced in the work of Raicu et al, we study the asymptotic behavior of the length of the local cohomology module of determinantal and pfaffian thickenings for suitable choices of cohomological degrees. This asymptotic behavior is also defined as a notion of multiplict…
Let $R=\mathbb{C}[\{x_{ij}\}]$ be the ring of polynomial functions in $mn$ variables where $m> n$. Set $X$ to be the $m\times n$ matrix in these variables and $I:=I_n(X)$ the ideal of maximal minors of $X$. We consider the rings $R/I^t$; for $t\gg 0$ the depth of $R/I^t$ is equal to $n^2-1$, and we show that each local cohomology module $H^{n^2-1}_{\frak{m}}(R/I^t)$ is a cyclic $R$-module. We also compute the annihilator of $H^{n^2-1}_{\frak{m}}(R/I^t)$ thereby completely determining its $R$-module structure. In the case that $X$ is a $n\times (n-1)$ matrix we describe a map between the Koszul…
Let R be a polynomial ring and M a finitely generated graded R-module of maximal grade (which means that the ideal I_t(\cA) generated by the maximal minors of a homogeneous presentation matrix, \cA, of M has maximal codimension in R). Suppose X:=Proj(R/I_t(\cA)) is smooth in a sufficiently large open subset and dim X > 0. Then we prove that the local graded deformation functor of M is isomorphic to the local Hilbert (scheme) functor at X \subset Proj(R) under a week assumption which holds if dim X > 1. Under this assumptions we get that the Hilbert scheme is smooth at (X), and we give an expli…
We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gröbner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that …
Here we consider the image of the principal minor map of symmetric matrices over an arbitrary unique factorization domain $R$. By exploiting a connection with symmetric determinantal representations, we characterize the image of the principal minor map through the condition that certain polynomials coming from so-called Rayleigh differences are squares in the polynomial ring over $R$. In almost all cases, one can characterize the image of the principal minor map using the orbit of Cayley's hyperdeterminant under the action of $(SL_2(R))^{n} \rtimes S_{n}$. Over the complex numbers, this recove…
Let $X$ be a matrix with entries in a polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field $K$. We prove that, if the entries of $X$ outside some $(t \times t)$-submatrix are algebraically dependent over $K$, the arithmetical rank of the ideal $I_t(X)$ of $t$-minors of $X$ drops at least by one with respect to the generic case; under suitable assumptions, it drops at least by $k$ if $X$ has $k$ zero entries. This upper bound turns out to be sharp if $\mathrm{char}\, K=0$, since it then coincides with the lower bound provided by the local cohomological dimension.
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring. The $n$-semidualizing modules of $R$ are generalizations of its semidualizing modules. We will prove some basic properties of $n$-semidualizing modules. Our main result and example shows that the divisor class group of a Gorenstein determinantal ring over a field is the set of isomorphism classes of its 1-semidualizing modules. Finally, we pose some questions about $n$-semidualizing modules.
