In this work we consider a problem related to the equilibrium statistical mechanics of spin glasses, namely the study of the Gibbs measure of the random energy model. For solving this problem, new results of independent interest on sums of spacings for i.i.d. Gaussian random variables are presented.
Then we give a precise description of the support of the Gibbs measure below the critical temperature.
The concept of metastate measures on the states of a random spin system was introduced to be able to treat the large-volume asymptotics for complex quenched random systems, like spin glasses, which may exhibit chaotic volume dependence in the strong-coupling regime. We consider the general issue of the extremal decomposition for Gibbsian specifications which depend measurably on a parameter that may describe a whole random environment in the infinite volume. Given a random Gibbs measure, as a measurable map from the environment space, we prove measurability of its decomposition measure on pure…
It was shown many times in the literature that a Markov random field is equivalent to a Gibbs random field when all realizations of the field have non-zero probabilities; the proofs are rather complicated. A simpler proof, which is based directly on simple probability theory, is presented. Furthermore, it is shown that the equivalence is still valid when there are constraints (zero probability realizations) of any type. The equivalence extends to infinite size random fields, as well.
We evaluate the scale at which the multifractal structure of some random Gibbs measures becomes discernible. The value of this scale is obtained through what we call the growth speed in Hölder singularity sets of a Borel measure. This growth speed yields new information on the multifractal behavior of the rescaled copies involved in the structure of statistically self-similar Gibbs measures. Our results are useful to understand the multifractal nature of various heterogeneous jump processes.
In this note we prove a correlation inequality for local variables of a Gibbs field based on the connectivity by active hyperbonds in a random cluster representation of the non overlap configuration distribution of two independent copies of the field. As a consequence, we show that absence of Machta-Newman-Stein blue bonds percolation implies uniqueness of Gibbs distribution in EA Spin Glasses. In dimension two this could constitute a step towards a proof that the critical temperature is zero.
In this paper, we show that the methods of mathematical statistical physics can be successfully applied to random fields in finite volumes. As a result, we obtain simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of a finite random field with a given system of one-point conditional distributions. Using the axiomatic (without the notion of potential) definition of Hamiltonian, we show that any finite random field is Gibbsian. We also apply the proposed approach to Markov random fields.
Consider a branching random walk on the real line. Madaule showed the renormalized trajectory of an individual selected according to the critical Gibbs measure converges in law to a Brownian meander. Besides, Chen proved that the renormalized trajectory leading to the leftmost individual at time $n$ converges in law to a standard Brownian excursion. In this article, we prove that the renormalized trajectory of an individual selected according to a supercritical Gibbs measure also converges in law toward the Brownian excursion. Moreover, refinements of this results enables to express the probab…
Gibbs-type random probability measures and the exchangeable random partitions they induce represent an important framework both from a theoretical and applied point of view. In the present paper, motivated by species sampling problems, we investigate some properties concerning the conditional distribution of the number of blocks with a certain frequency generated by Gibbs-type random partitions. The general results are then specialized to three noteworthy examples yielding completely explicit expressions of their distributions, moments and asymptotic behaviors. Such expressions can be interpre…
We study the spatial Gibbs random graphs introduced in [MV16] from the point of view of local convergence. These are random graphs embedded in an ambient space consisting of a line segment, defined through a probability measure that favors graphs of small (graph-theoretic) diameter but penalizes the presence of edges whose extremities are distant in the geometry of the ambient space. In [MV16] these graphs were shown to exhibit threshold behavior with respect to the various parameters that define them; this behavior was related to the formation of hierarchical structures of edges organized so …
We prove an exponential approximation for the law of approximate occurrence of typical patterns for a class of Gibssian sources on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\ge2$. From this result, we deduce a law of large numbers and a large deviation result for the waiting time of distorted patterns.
Consider the supercritical branching random walk on the real line in the boundary case and the associated Gibbs measure $ν_{n,β}$ on the $n^\text{th}$ generation, which is also the polymer measure on a disordered tree with inverse temperature $β$. The convergence of the partition function $W_{n,β}$, after rescaling, towards a nontrivial limit has been proved by A\"ıdékon and Shi in the critical case $β= 1$ and by Madaule when $β>1$. We study here the near-critical case, where $β_n \to 1$, and prove the convergence of $W_{n,β_n}$, after rescaling, towards a constant multiple of the limit of the…
We consider the locally thinned Bernoulli field on $\mathbb Z^d$, which is the lattice version of the Type-I Matérn hardcore process in Euclidean space. It is given as the lattice field of occupation variables, obtained as image of an i.i.d. Bernoulli lattice field with occupation probability $p$, under the map which removes all particles with neighbors, while keeping the isolated particles. We prove that the thinned measure has a Gibbsian representation and provide control on its quasilocal dependence, both in the regime of small $p$, but also in the regime of large $p$, where the thinning tr…
We study a one--dimensional Ising spin systems with ferromagnetic, long--range interaction decaying as $n^{-2+\a}$, $\a \in [0,\frac 12]$, in the presence of external random fields. We assume that the random fields are given by a collection of symmetric, independent, identically distributed real random variables, gaussian or subgaussian with variance $θ$. We show that for temperature and variance of the randomness small enough, with an overwhelming probability with respect to the random fields, the typical configurations, within volumes centered at the origin whose size grow faster than any po…
Many real-world networks of interest are embedded in physical space. We present a new random graph model aiming to reflect the interplay between the geometries of the graph and of the underlying space. The model favors configurations with small average graph distance between vertices, but adding an edge comes at a cost measured according to the geometry of the ambient physical space. In most cases, we identify the order of magnitude of the average graph distance as a function of the parameters of the model. As the proofs reveal, hierarchical structures naturally emerge from our simple modeling…
We describe the distribution of frequencies ordered by sample values in a random sample of size $n$ from the two parameter GEM$(α,θ)$ random discrete distribution on the positive integers. These frequencies are a $($size$-α)$-biased random permutation of the sample frequencies in either ranked order, or in the order of appearance of values in the sampling process. This generalizes a well known identity in distribution due to Donnelly and Tavaré (1986) for $α= 0$ to the case $0 \le α< 1$. This description extends to sampling from Gibbs$(α)$ frequencies obtained by suitable conditioning of the G…
We consider - in uniformly strictly convex potential regime - two versions of random gradient models with disorder. In model (A) the interface feels a bulk term of random fields while in model (B) the disorder enters though the potential acting on the gradients. We assume a general distribution on the disorder with uniformly-bounded finite second moments. It is well known that for gradient models without disorder there are no Gibbs measures in infinite-volume in dimension $d = 2$, while there are shift-invariant gradient Gibbs measures describing an infinite-volume distribution for the gradien…
The problem of characterization of Gibbs random fields is considered. Various Gibbsianness criteria are obtained using the earlier developed one-point framework which in particular allows to describe random fields by means of either one-point conditional or one-point finite-conditional distributions. The main outcome are the criteria in terms of one-point finite-conditional distribution, one of which can be taken as a purely probabilistic definition of Gibbs random field.
In this paper, we study the overlap distribution and Gibbs measure of the Branching Random Walk with Gaussian increments on a binary tree. We first prove that the Branching Random Walk is 1 step Replica Symmetry Breaking and give a precise form for its overlap distribution, verifying a prediction of Derrida and Spohn. We then prove that the Gibbs measure of this system satisfies the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities. As a consequence, the limiting Gibbs measure has Poisson-Dirichlet statistics. The main technical result is a proof that the overlap distribution for the Branching Random Walk is suppor…
We consider disordered lattice spin models with finite volume Gibbs measures $μ_Ł[η](d\s)$. Here $\s$ denotes a lattice spin-variable and $η$ a lattice random variable with product distribution $¶$ describing the disorder of the model. We ask: When will the joint measures $\lim_{Ł\uparrow\Z^d}¶(dη)μ_Ł[η](d\s)$ be [non-] Gibbsian measures on the product of spin-space and disorder-space? We obtain general criteria for both Gibbsianness and non-Gibbsianness providing an interesting link between phase transitions at a fixed random configuration and Gibbsianness in product space: Loosely speaking, …
We study Gibbsian models of unbounded integer-valued spins on trees which possess a symmetry under height-shift. We develop a theory relating boundary laws to gradient Gibbs measures, which applies also in cases where the corresponding Gibbs measures do not exist. Our results extend the classical theory of Zachary beyond the case of normalizable boundary laws, which implies existence of Gibbs measures, to periodic boundary laws. We provide a construction for classes of tree-automorphism invariant gradient Gibbs measures in terms of mixtures of pinned measures, whose marginals to infinite paths…
We prove the explicit formula for sofic and Rokhlin entropy of actions arising from some class of Gibbs measures. It provides a new set of examples with sofic entropy independent of sofic approximations. It is particularilly interresting, since in non-amenable case Rokhlin entropy was computed only in case of Bernoulli actions and for some examples with zero Rokhlin entropy. As an example we show that our formula holds for the supercritical Ising model. We also establish a criterion for uniqueness of Gibbs measure by means of f-invariant.
Building upon the theory of graph limits and the Aldous-Hoover representation and inspired by Panchenko's work on asymptotic Gibbs measures (Annals of Probability 2013), we construct continuous embeddings of discrete probability distributions. We show that the theory of graph limits induces a meaningful notion of convergence and derive a corresponding version of the Szemerédi regularity lemma. Moreover, complementing recent work (Bapst et. al. 2015), we apply these results to Gibbs measures induced by sparse random factor graphs and verify the "replica symmetric solution" predicted in the phys…
The distribution of age-ordered frequencies arising from an exchangeable Gibbs partition is studied in relation with the distribution of the positions at which new mutations appear in a sample.
We extend results of R. Holley beyond the integer lattice to a large class of groups which includes free groups. In particular we show that a shift-invariant measure is Gibbs if and only if it is Glauber-invariant. Moreover, any shift-invariant measure converges weakly to the set of Gibbs measures when evolved under Glauber dynamics. These results are proven using a new notion of free energy density relative to a sofic approximation by homomorphisms. Any measure which minimizes free energy density is Gibbs.
We prove existence of infinite volume Gibbs measures relative to Brownian motion. We require the pair potential W to fulfill a uniform integrability condition, but otherwise our restrictions on the potentials are relatively weak. In particular, our results are applicable to the massless Nelson model. We also prove an upper bound for path fluctuations under the infinite volume Gibbs measures.
We study the approximation of action minimizing measures, for a mechanical Lagrangian on the torus, by the probability densities given by quasi-periodic eigenfunctions of the Schrodinger operator.
Given a Gibbs point process $¶^Ψ$ on $\R^d$ having a weak enough potential $Ψ$, we consider the random measures $μ_\la := \sum_{x \in ¶^Ψ \cap Q_\la} ξ(x, ¶^Ψ \cap Q_\la) δ_{x/\la^{1/d}}$, where $Q_{\la} := [-\la^{1/d}/2,\la^{1/d}/2]^d$ is the volume $\la$ cube and where $ξ(\cdot,\cdot)$ is a translation invariant stabilizing functional. Subject to $Ψ$ satisfying a localization property and translation invariance, we establish weak laws of large numbers for $\la^{-1} μ_\la(f)$, $f$ a bounded test function on $\R^d$, and weak convergence of $\la^{-1/2} μ_\la(f),$ suitably centered, to a Gaussia…
We consider stochastic dynamics of lattice systems with finite local state space, possibly at low temperature, and possibly non-reversible. We assume the additional regularity properties on the dynamics: a) There is at least one stationary measure which is a Gibbs measure for an absolutely summable potential Phi. b) Zero loss of relative entropy density under dynamics implies the Gibbs property with the same Phi. We prove results on the attractor property of the set of Gibbs measures for Phi: 1. The set of weak limit points of any trajectory of translation-invariant measures contains at least …
We consider gradient fields on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for potentials $V$ that can be expressed as $$e^{-V(x)}=pe^{-\frac{qx^2}{2}}+(1-p)e^{-\frac{x^2}{2}}.$$ This representation allows us to associate a random conductance type model to the gradient fields with zero tilt. We investigate this random conductance model and prove correlation inequalities, duality properties, and uniqueness of the Gibbs measure in certain regimes. Moreover, we show that there is a close relation between Gibbs measures of the random conductance model and gradient Gibbs measures with zero tilt for the potential $V$. Based on …
By resorting to sequential constructions of exchangeable random partitions (Pitman, 2006), and exploiting some known facts about generalized Stirling numbers, we derive a generalized Chinese restaurant process construction of exchangeable Gibbs partitions of type $α$ (Gnedin and Pitman, 2006). Our construction represents the natural theoretical probabilistic framework in which to embed some recent results about a Bayesian nonparametric treatment of estimation problems arising in genetic experiment under Gibbs, species sampling, models priors.
In this contribution we discuss the role disordered (or random) systems have played in the study of non-Gibbsian measures. This role has two main aspects, the distinction between which has not always been fully clear: 1) {\em From} disordered systems: Disordered systems can be used as a tool; analogies with, as well as results and methods from the study of random systems can be employed to investigate non-Gibbsian properties of a variety of measures of physical and mathematical interest. 2) {\em Of} disordered systems: Non-Gibbsianness is a property of various (joint) measures describing quenc…
We study the relative entropy density for generalized Gibbs measures. We first show its existence and obtain a familiar expression in terms of entropy and relative energy for a class of ``almost Gibbsian measures'' (almost sure continuity of conditional probabilities). For quasilocal measures, we obtain a full variational principle. For the joint measures of the random field Ising model, we show that the weak Gibbs property holds, with an almost surely rapidly decaying translation-invariant potential. For these measures we show that the variational principle fails as soon as the measures lose …
The asymptotic behaviors of the integrated density of states $N(λ)$ of Schrödinger operators with nonpositive potentials associated with Gibbs point processes are studied. It is shown that for some Gibbs point processes, the leading terms of $N(λ)$ as $λ\downarrow-\infty$ coincide with that for a Poisson point process, which is known. Moreover, for some Gibbs point processes corresponding to pairwise interactions, the leading terms of $N(λ)$ as $λ\downarrow-\infty$ are determined, which are different from that for a Poisson point process.
We establish tight results for rapid mixing of Gibbs samplers for the Ferromagnetic Ising model on general graphs. We show that if \[(d-1)\tanhβ<1,\] then there exists a constant C such that the discrete time mixing time of Gibbs samplers for the ferromagnetic Ising model on any graph of n vertices and maximal degree d, where all interactions are bounded by $β$, and arbitrary external fields are bounded by $Cn\log n$. Moreover, the spectral gap is uniformly bounded away from 0 for all such graphs, as well as for infinite graphs of maximal degree d. We further show that when $d\tanhβ<1$, with h…
We consider random walk in a space-time random potential, also known as directed random polymer measures, on the planar square lattice with nearest-neighbor steps and general i.i.d. weights on the vertices. We construct covariant cocycles and use them to prove new results on existence, uniqueness/non-uniqueness, and asymptotic directions of semi-infinite polymer measures (solutions to the Dobrushin-Lanford-Ruelle equations). We also prove non-existence of covariant or deterministically directed bi-infinite polymer measures. Along the way, we prove almost sure existence of Busemann function lim…
Gibbs-type exchangeable random partitions, which is a class of multiplicative measures on the set of positive integer partitions, appear in various contexts, including Bayesian statistics, random combinatorial structures, and stochastic models of diversity in various phenomena. Some distributional results on ordered sizes in the Gibbs partition are established by introducing associated partial Bell polynomials and analysis of the generating functions. The combinatorial approach is applied to derive explicit results on asymptotic behavior of the extreme sizes in the Gibbs partition. Especially,…
Gibbs random fields corresponding to systems of real-valued spins (e.g. systems of interacting anharmonic oscillators) indexed by the vertices of unbounded degree graphs with a certain summability property are constructed. It is proven that the set of tempered Gibbs random fields is non-void and weakly compact, and that they obey uniform exponential integrability estimates. In the second part of the paper, a class of graphs is described in which the mentioned summability is obtained as a consequence of a property, by virtue of which vertices of large degree are located at large distances from …
Consider a discrete locally finite subset $Γ$ of $R^d$ and the complete graph $(Γ,E)$, with vertices $Γ$ and edges $E$. We consider Gibbs measures on the set of sub-graphs with vertices $Γ$ and edges $E'\subset E$. The Gibbs interaction acts between open edges having a vertex in common. We study percolation properties of the Gibbs distribution of the graph ensemble. The main results concern percolation properties of the open edges in two cases: (a) when the $Γ$ is a sample from homogeneous Poisson process and (b) for a fixed $Γ$ with exponential decay of connectivity.
We consider statistical mechanics models of continuous spins in a disordered environment. These models have a natural interpretation as effective interface models. It is well known that without disorder there are no interface Gibbs measures in infinite volume in dimension $d=2$, while there are ``gradient Gibbs measures'' describing an infinite-volume distribution for the increments of the field, as was shown by Funaki and Spohn. In the present paper we show that adding a disorder term prohibits the existence of such gradient Gibbs measures for general interaction potentials in $d=2$. This non…
Random-scan Gibbs samplers possess a natural hierarchical structure. The structure connects Gibbs samplers targeting higher dimensional distributions to those targeting lower dimensional ones. This leads to a quasi-telescoping property of their spectral gaps. Based on this property, we derive three new bounds on the spectral gaps and convergence rates of Gibbs samplers on general domains. The three bounds relate a chain's spectral gap to, respectively, the correlation structure of the target distribution, a class of random walk chains, and a collection of influence matrices. Notably, one of ou…
Boltzmann-Gibbs random fields are defined in terms of the exponential expression exp(-H), where H is a suitably defined energy functional of the field states x(s). This paper presents a new Boltzmann-Gibbs model which features local interactions in the energy functional. The interactions are embodied in a spatial coupling function which uses smoothed kernel-function approximations of spatial derivatives inspired from the theory of smoothed particle hydrodynamics. A specific model for the interactions based on a second-degree polynomial of the Laplace operator is studied. An explicit, mesh-free…
Many problems of interest in computer science and information theory can be phrased in terms of a probability distribution over discrete variables associated to the vertices of a large (but finite) sparse graph. In recent years, considerable progress has been achieved by viewing these distributions as Gibbs measures and applying to their study heuristic tools from statistical physics. We review this approach and provide some results towards a rigorous treatment of these problems.
Disordered systems such as spin glasses have been used extensively as models for high-dimensional random landscapes and studied from the perspective of optimization algorithms. In a recent paper by L. Addario-Berry and the second author, the continuous random energy model (CREM) was proposed as a simple toy model to study the efficiency of such algorithms. The following question was raised in that paper: what is the threshold $β_G$, at which sampling (approximately) from the Gibbs measure at inverse temperature $β$ becomes algorithmically hard? This paper is a first step towards answering this…
In this paper we study random partitions of 1,...n, where every cluster of size j can be in any of w\_j possible internal states. The Gibbs (n,k,w) distribution is obtained by sampling uniformly among such partitions with k clusters. We provide conditions on the weight sequence w allowing construction of a partition valued random process where at step k the state has the Gibbs (n,k,w) distribution, so the partition is subject to irreversible fragmentation as time evolves. For a particular one-parameter family of weight sequences w\_j, the time-reversed process is the discrete Marcus-Lushnikov …
In this paper, we study the asymptotic thin-shell width concentration for random vectors uniformly distributed in Orlicz balls. We provide both asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the probability of such a random vector $X_n$ being in a thin shell of radius $\sqrt{n}$ times the asymptotic value of $n^{-1/2}\left(\mathbb E\left[\| X_n\|_2^2\right]\right)^{1/2}$ (as $n\to\infty$), showing that in certain ranges our estimates are optimal. In particular, our estimates significantly improve upon the currently best known general Lee-Vempala bound when the deviation parameter $t=t_n$ goes down to ze…
In this note, we point out that infinite-volume Gibbs measures of spin glass models on the hypercube can be identified as random probability measures on the unit ball of a Hilbert space. This simple observation follows from a result of Dovbysh and Sudakov on weakly exchangeable random matrices. Limiting Gibbs measures can then be studied as single well-defined objects. This approach naturally extends the space of Random Overlap Structures as defined by Aizenman, Sims and Starr. We discuss the Ruelle Probability Cascades and the stochastic stability within this framework. As an application, we …
We prove invariance of the Gibbs measure for the (gauge transformed) periodic quartic gKdV. The Gibbs measure is supported on H^s for s<1/2, and the quartic gKdV is analytically ill-posed in this range. In order to consider the flow in the support of the Gibbs measure, we combine a probabilistic argument and the second iteration and construct local-in-time solutions to the (gauge transformed) quartic gKdV almost surely in the support of the Gibbs measure. Then, we use Bourgain's idea to extend these local solutions to global solutions, and prove the invariance of the Gibbs measure under the fl…
We present a class of random cellular automata with multiple invariant measures which are all non-Gibbsian. The automata have configuration space {0,1}^{Z^d}, with d > 1, and they are noisy versions of automata with the "eroder property". The noise is totally asymmetric in the sense that it allows random flippings of "0" into "1" but not the converse. We prove that all invariant measures assign to the event "a sphere with a large radius L is filled with ones" a probability μ_L that is too large for the measure to be Gibbsian. For example, for the NEC automaton -ln(μ_L) ~ L while for any Gibbs …
We prove the normalizability of Gibbs measure associated with radial focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the 2-dimensional disc $\mathbb{D}$, at critical mass threshold. The result completes the study of optimal mass normalizability on $\mathbb{D}$ by Oh-Sosoe-Tolomeo (2021).
