The problem of characterization of Gibbs random fields is considered. Various Gibbsianness criteria are obtained using the earlier developed one-point framework which in particular allows to describe random fields by means of either one-point conditional or one-point finite-conditional distributions. The main outcome are the criteria in terms of one-point finite-conditional distribution, one of which can be taken as a purely probabilistic definition of Gibbs random field.
We consider disordered lattice spin models with finite volume Gibbs measures $μ_Ł[η](d\s)$. Here $\s$ denotes a lattice spin-variable and $η$ a lattice random variable with product distribution $¶$ describing the disorder of the model. We ask: When will the joint measures $\lim_{Ł\uparrow\Z^d}¶(dη)μ_Ł[η](d\s)$ be [non-] Gibbsian measures on the product of spin-space and disorder-space? We obtain general criteria for both Gibbsianness and non-Gibbsianness providing an interesting link between phase transitions at a fixed random configuration and Gibbsianness in product space: Loosely speaking, …
We present a class of random cellular automata with multiple invariant measures which are all non-Gibbsian. The automata have configuration space {0,1}^{Z^d}, with d > 1, and they are noisy versions of automata with the "eroder property". The noise is totally asymmetric in the sense that it allows random flippings of "0" into "1" but not the converse. We prove that all invariant measures assign to the event "a sphere with a large radius L is filled with ones" a probability μ_L that is too large for the measure to be Gibbsian. For example, for the NEC automaton -ln(μ_L) ~ L while for any Gibbs …
We analyze a simple approximation scheme based on the Morita-approach for the example of the mean field random field Ising model where it is claimed to be exact in some of the physics literature. We show that the approximation scheme is flawed, but it provides a set of equations whose metastable solutions surprisingly yield the correct solution of the model. We explain how the same equations appear in a different way as rigorous consistency equations. We clarify the relation between the validity of their solutions and the almost surely discontinuous behavior of the single-site conditional prob…
We consider the locally thinned Bernoulli field on $\mathbb Z^d$, which is the lattice version of the Type-I Matérn hardcore process in Euclidean space. It is given as the lattice field of occupation variables, obtained as image of an i.i.d. Bernoulli lattice field with occupation probability $p$, under the map which removes all particles with neighbors, while keeping the isolated particles. We prove that the thinned measure has a Gibbsian representation and provide control on its quasilocal dependence, both in the regime of small $p$, but also in the regime of large $p$, where the thinning tr…
We consider the i.i.d. Bernoulli field $μ_p$ on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with occupation density $p\in [0,1]$. To each realization of the set of occupied sites we apply a thinning map that removes all occupied sites that are isolated in graph distance. We show that, while this map seems non-invasive for large $p$, as it changes only a small fraction $p(1-p)^{2d}$ of sites, there is $p(d)<1$ such that for all $p\in(p(d),1)$ the resulting measure is a non-Gibbsian measure, i.e., it does not possess a continuous version of its finite-volume conditional probabilities. On the other hand, for small $p$, the G…
We extend the notion of Gibbsianness for mean-field systems to the set-up of general (possibly continuous) local state spaces. We investigate the Gibbs properties of systems arising from an initial mean-field Gibbs measure by application of given local transition kernels. This generalizes previous case-studies made for spins taking finitely many values to the first step in direction to a general theory, containing the following parts: (1) A formula for the limiting conditional probability distributions of the transformed system. It holds both in the Gibbs and non-Gibbs regime and invokes a min…
We study Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model in the mean field case (i.e on a complete graph) and on trees. For the mean field case, a complete characterization of the set of temperatures for which non-Gibbsianness happens is given. The results for trees are somewhat less explicit, but we do show for general trees that non-Gibbsianness of the fuzzy Potts model happens exactly for those temperatures where the underlying Potts model has multiple Gibbs measures.
We consider Ising-spin systems starting from an initial Gibbs measure $ν$ and evolving under a spin-flip dynamics towards a reversible Gibbs measure $μ\not=ν$. Both $ν$ and $μ$ are assumed to have a finite-range interaction. We study the Gibbsian character of the measure $νS(t)$ at time $t$ and show the following: (1) For all $ν$ and $μ$, $νS(t)$ is Gibbs for small $t$. (2) If both $ν$ and $μ$ have a high or infinite temperature, then $νS(t)$ is Gibbs for all $t>0$. (3) If $ν$ has a low non-zero temperature and a zero magnetic field and $μ$ has a high or infinite temperature, then $νS(t)$ is G…
We consider the Curie-Weiss model at a given initial temperature in vanishing external field evolving under a Glauber spin-flip dynamics corresponding to a possibly different temperature. We study the limiting conditional probabilities and their continuity properties and discuss their set of points of discontinuity (bad points). We provide a complete analysis of the transition between Gibbsian and non-Gibbsian behavior as a function of time, extending earlier work for the case of independent spin-flip dynamics. For initial temperature bigger than one we prove that the time-evolved measure stay…
We investigate the Gibbs-measures of ferromagnetically coupled continuous spins in double-well potentials subjected to a random field (our specific example being the $ϕ^4$ theory), showing ferromagnetic ordering in $d\geq 3$ dimensions for weak disorder and large energy barriers. We map the random continuous spin distributions to distributions for an Ising-spin system by means of a single-site coarse-graining method described by local transition kernels. We derive a contour- representation for them with notably positive contour activities and prove their Gibbsianness. This representation is sh…
We consider a system of real-valued spins interacting with each other through a mean-field Hamiltonian that depends on the empirical magnetization of the spins via a general potential. The system is subjected to a stochastic dynamics where the spins perform independent Brownian motions. As in \cite{FedHoMa13}, which considers the Curie-Weiss model with Ising spins interacting via a quadratic potential and subjected to independent spins flips, we follow the program outlined in \cite{vEFedHoRe10}. We show that in the thermodynamic limit the system is non-Gibbs at time $t \in (0,\infty)$ if and o…
We analyze the generalized mean-field q-state Potts model which is obtained by replacing the usual quadratic interaction function in the mean-field Hamiltonian by a higher power z. We first prove a generalization of the known limit result for the empirical magnetization vector of Ellis and Wang which shows that in the right parameter regime, the first-order phase-transition persists. Next we turn to the corresponding generalized fuzzy Potts model which is obtained by decomposing the set of the q possible spin-values into 1 < s < q classes and identifying the spins within these classes. In exte…
In this paper we construct the two-dimensional continuum random field Ising model via scaling limits of a random field perturbation of the critical two-dimensional Ising model with diminishing disorder strength. Furthermore, we show that almost surely with respect to the continuum random field given by a white noise, the law of the magnetisation field is singular with respect to that of the two-dimensional continuum pure Ising model constructed by Camia, Garban and Newman.
It is shown that replica symmetry is not broken in the random field Ising model in any dimension, at any temperature and field strength, except possibly at a measure-zero set of exceptional temperatures and field strengths.
We characterize the phase space for the infinite volume limit of a ferromagnetic mean-field XY model in a random field pointing in one direction with two symmetric values. We determine the stationary solutions and detect possible phase transitions in the interaction strength for fixed random field intensity. We show that at low temperature magnetic ordering appears perpendicularly to the field. The latter situation corresponds to a spin-flop transition.
In this paper, an extension of the random field Ginzburg-Landau model on the hypercubic lattice is considered by adding $p$-spin ($p\geqslant 2$) interactions coupled to general disorders. This new model is called the random field mixed-spin Ginzburg-Landau model. We proved that, in the infinite volume limit of this model, the variance of spin overlap vanishes.
Motivated by recent developments over the past few years in the study of the correlation length of the random-field Ising model due to Ding and Wirth in a paper first available in 2020, we pursue one natural direction of research that the authors propose is of interest, namely in confirming that the same scaling for the correlation length for the random-field Ising model equals that of the random-field Potts model. To demonstrate that the $\frac{4}{3}$ emergence in the correlation length scaling for the random-field Potts model coincides with that correlation length scaling for the random-fiel…
Consider the classical XY model in a weak random external field pointing along the Y axis with strength $ε$. We prove that the model defined on $\Z^3$ with nearest neighbor coupling exhibits residual magnetic order in the horizontal direction for arbitrarily weak random field strengths and, depending on field strength, sufficiently low temperature.
We investigate the realizations of a random Gaussian field on a finite domain of ${\mathbb R}^d$ in the limit where a given linear functional of the field is large. We prove that if its variance is bounded, the field converges uniformly and almost surely to a non random profile depending only on the covariance and the considered linear functional of the field. This is a significant improvement of the weaker $L^2$-convergence in probability previously obtained in the case of conditioning on a large quadratic functional.
In this paper we show that the ultrametricity property remains valid in random field Ising models with independent disorder whenever the field strength is a small perturbation.
We define the random magnetic Laplacien with spatial white noise as magnetic field on the two-dimensional torus using paracontrolled calculus. It yields a random self-adjoint operator with pure point spectrum and domain a random subspace of nonsmooth functions in L 2. We give sharp bounds on the eigenvalues which imply an almost sure Weyl-type law.
We survey a decade worth of work pertaining to the nodal structures of random fields, with emphasis on the transformative techniques that shaped the field.
It was shown many times in the literature that a Markov random field is equivalent to a Gibbs random field when all realizations of the field have non-zero probabilities; the proofs are rather complicated. A simpler proof, which is based directly on simple probability theory, is presented. Furthermore, it is shown that the equivalence is still valid when there are constraints (zero probability realizations) of any type. The equivalence extends to infinite size random fields, as well.
A sufficient condition for the uniform modulus of continuity of a random field $X = \{X(t), t \in \R^N\}$ is provided. The result is applicable to random fields with heavy-tailed distribution such as stable random fields.
We construct time dependent random fields on the sphere through coordinates change and subordination and we study the associated angular power spectrum. Some of this random fields arise naturally as solutions of partial differential equations with random initial condition represented by a Gaussian random field.
The present paper has two goals. First to present a natural example of a new class of random fields which are the variable neighborhood random fields. The example we consider is a partially observed nearest neighbor binary Markov random field. The second goal is to establish sufficient conditions ensuring that the variable neighborhoods are almost surely finite. We discuss the relationship between the almost sure finiteness of the interaction neighborhoods and the presence/absence of phase transition of the underlying Markov random field. In the case where the underlying random field has no ph…
We consider "randomized" statistics constructed by using a finite number of observations a random field at randomly chosen points. We generalize the invariance principle (the functional CLT), the Glivenko--Cantelli theorem, the theorem about convergence to the Brownian bridge and the Kolmogorov theorem about the limit distribution of the empirical distribution function, as well as an improved version of the CLT in A. Tempelman, Randomized multivariate central limit theorems for ergodic homogeneous random fields, Stochastic Processes and their Applications. 143 (2022), 89-105. The randomized ap…
We consider random fields that can be represented as integrals of deterministic functions with respect to infinitely divisible random measures and show that these random fields are infinitely divisible.
Multivariate random fields whose distributions are invariant under operator-scalings in both time-domain and state space are studied. Such random fields are called operator-self-similar random fields and their scaling operators are characterized. Two classes of operator-self-similar stable random fields $X=\{X(t), t \in \R^d\}$ with values in $\R^m$ are constructed by utilizing homogeneous functions and stochastic integral representations.
Gaussian random field on general ultrametric space is introduced as a solution of pseudodifferential stochastic equation. Covariation of the introduced random field is computed with the help of wavelet analysis on ultrametric spaces. Notion of ultrametric Markovianity, which describes independence of contributions to random field from different ultrametric balls is introduced. We show that the random field under investigation satisfies this property.
Consider a Bernoulli random field satisfying the Hannan's condition. Recently, invariance principles for partial sums of random fields over rectangular index sets are established. In this note we complement previous results by investigating limit theorems for weighted Bernoulli random fields, including central limit theorems for partial sums over arbitrary index sets and invariance principles for Gaussian random fields. Most results improve earlier ones on Bernoulli random fields under Wu's condition, which is stronger than Hannan's condition.
We provide a sufficient condition for the bounded law of the iterated logarithms for strictly stationary random fields expressable as a functional of i.i.d. random fields when the summation is done on rectangles. The study is done via the control of the moments of an appropriated maximal function. Applications to functionals of linear random fields, functions of a Gaussian linear random field and Volterra process are given.
In this paper we construct vector-valued multi operator-stable random measures that behave locally like operator-stable random measures. The space of integrable functions is characterized in terms of a certain quasi-norm. Moreover, a multi operator- stable moving-average representation of a random field is presented which behaves locally like an operator-stable random field which is also operator-self-similar.
In this paper we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the mean square approximation of a random field with an ortho-martingale. The conditions are formulated in terms of projective criteria. Applications are given to linear and nonlinear random fields with independent innovations.
We prove a central limit theorem for strictly stationary random fields under a sharp projective condition. The assumption was introduced in the setting of random variables by Maxwell and Woodroofe. Our approach is based on new results for triangular arrays of martingale differences, which have interest in themselves. We provide as applications new results for linear random fields and nonlinear random fields of Volterra-type.
Recently, Hammond and Sheffield introduced a model of correlated random walks that scale to fractional Brownian motions with long-range dependence. In this paper, we consider a natural generalization of this model to dimension $d\geq 2$. We define a $\mathbb Z^d$-indexed random field with dependence relations governed by an underlying random graph with vertices $\mathbb Z^d$, and we study the scaling limits of the partial sums of the random field over rectangular sets. An interesting phenomenon appears: depending on how fast the rectangular sets increase along different directions, different r…
Two classes of multivariate random fields with operator-stable marginals are constructed. The random fields $\mathbb{X}=\{X(t) : t \in \mathbb{R}^d \}$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^m$ are invariant in law under operator-scaling in both the time-domain and the state-space. The construction is based on operator-stable random measures utilising certain homogeneous functions.
We study in this paper the sufficient conditions for enhanced continuity of random fields, i.e. such that the modulus of its continuity allows the factorable representation by the product of random variable on the deterministic module of continuity. We estimate also the ordinary and (possible) exponential moments of these random variables. We consider also the case of random fields with heavy tails of distribution and the so-called rectangle its continuity.
We will prove that by averaging of random variables (r.v.) and random fields (r.f.) its tails of distributions do not increase in comparison with the tails of source variables, essentially or almost exact, under very weak conditions.
We study general models of random fields associated with non-local equations in time and space. We discuss the properties of the corresponding angular power spectrum and find asymptotic results in terms of random time changes.
By extending the methods in Peligrad et al. (2014a, b), we establish exact moderate and large deviation asymptotics for linear random fields with independent innovations. These results are useful for studying nonparametric regression with random field errors and strong limit theorems.
In this paper, we show that the methods of mathematical statistical physics can be successfully applied to random fields in finite volumes. As a result, we obtain simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of a finite random field with a given system of one-point conditional distributions. Using the axiomatic (without the notion of potential) definition of Hamiltonian, we show that any finite random field is Gibbsian. We also apply the proposed approach to Markov random fields.
We prove that under an easily verifiable set of conditions a sequence of associated random fields converges under rescaling to the Poisson Point Process and give a couple of examples.
We investigate the sample paths regularity of operator scaling alpha-stable random fields. Such fields were introduced as anisotropic generalizations of self-similar fields and satisfy a scaling property for a real matrix E. In the case of harmonizable operator scaling random fields, the sample paths are locally Hölderian and their Hölder regularity is characterized by the eigen decomposition with respect to E. In particular, the directional Hölder regularity may vary and is given by the eigenvalues of E. In the case of moving average operator scaling random alpha-stable random fields, with 0<…
We propose an exact simulation method for Brown-Resnick random fields, building on new representations for these stationary max-stable fields. The main idea is to apply suitable changes of measure.
Prakasa Rao (Studia Sci. Math. Hungar. 11 (1976) 277-282) studied a characterization of probability distributions for linear functions of independent generalized random fields. These results are extended to Q-independent generalized random fields. It is known that independence implies Q-independence but the converse is not true.
We offer in this paper the non-asymptotical bilateral sharp exponential estimates for tail of maximum distribution of {\it discontinuous} random fields. Our consideration based on the theory of Prokhorov-Skorokhod spaces of random fields and on the theory of multivariate Banach spaces of random variables with exponential decreasing tails of distributions.
A general method to prove strong laws of large numbers for random fields is given. It is based on the Hájek - Rényi type method presented in Noszály and Tómács \cite{noszaly} and in Tómács and Líbor \cite{thomas06}. Noszály and Tómács \cite{noszaly} obtained a Hájek-Rényi type maximal inequality for random fields using moments inequalities. Recently, Tómács and Líbor \cite{thomas06} obtained a Hájek-Rényi type maximal inequality for random sequences based on probabilities, but not for random fields. In this paper we present a Hájek-Rényi type maximal inequality for random fields, using probabi…
We study the sample paths properties of Operator scaling Gaussian random fields. Such fields are anisotropic generalizations of anisotropic self-similar random fields as anisotropic Fractional Brownian Motion. Some characteristic properties of the anisotropy are revealed by the regularity of the sample paths. The sharpest way of measuring smoothness is related to these anisotropies and thus to the geometry of these fields.
Two methods to approximate infinitely divisible random fields are presented. The methods are based on approximating the kernel function in the spectral representation of such fields, leading to numerical integration of the respective integrals. Error bounds for the approximation error are derived and the approximations are used to simulate certain classes of infinitely divisible random fields.
In this paper, for centered homogeneous Gaussian random fields the joint limiting distributions of normalized maxima and minima over continuous time and uniform grids are investigated. It is shown that maxima and minima are asymptotic dependent for strongly dependent homogeneous Gaussian random field with the choice of sparse grid, Pickands' grid or dense grid, while for the weakly dependent Gaussian random field maxima and minima are asymptotically independent.
Motivated by random evolutions which do not start from equilibrium, in a recent work, Peligrad and Volný (2018) showed that the quenched CLT (central limit theorem) holds for ortho-martingale random fields. In this paper, we study the quenched CLT for a class of random fields larger than the ortho-martingales. To get the results, we impose sufficient conditions in terms of projective criteria under which the partial sums of a stationary random field admit an ortho-martingale approximation. More precisely, the sufficient conditions are of the Hannan's projective type. As applications, we establ…
We consider the motion of a particle in a random isotropic force field. Assuming that the force field arises from a Poisson field in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 4$, and the initial velocity of the particle is sufficiently large, we describe the asymptotic behavior of the particle.
We study the one dimensional Ising model with ferromagnetic, long range interaction which decays as |i-j|^{-2+a}, 1/2< a<1, in the presence of an external random filed. we assume that the random field is given by a collection of independent identically distributed random variables, subgaussian with mean zero. We show that for temperature and strength of the randomness (variance) small enough with P=1 with respect to the distribution of the random fields there are at least two distinct extremal Gibbs measures.
