Gaussian random field on general ultrametric space is introduced as a solution of pseudodifferential stochastic equation. Covariation of the introduced random field is computed with the help of wavelet analysis on ultrametric spaces.
Notion of ultrametric Markovianity, which describes independence of contributions to random field from different ultrametric balls is introduced. We show that the random field under investigation satisfies this property.
We study the Gibbs measure of the nonhierarchical versions of the Generalized Random Energy Models introduced in previous work. We prove that the ultrametricity holds only provided some nondegeneracy conditions on the hamiltonian are met.
In this paper, we introduce a notion called "Approximate Ultrametricity" which encapsulates the phenomenology of a sequence of random probability measures having supports that behave like ultrametric spaces insofar as they decompose into nested balls. We provide a sufficient condition for a sequence of random probability measures on the unit ball of an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space to admit such a decomposition, whose elements we call clusters. We also characterize the laws of the measures of the clusters by showing that they converge in law to the weights of a Ruelle Probabilit…
The purpose of these notes is to clarify the duality between a natural class of jump processes on compact ultrametric spaces - studied in current work of Bendikov, Girgor'yan and Pittet - and nearest neighbour walks on trees. Processes of this type have appeared in recent work of Kigami. Every compact ultrametric space arises as the boundary of a locally finite tree. The duality arises via the Dirichlet forms: one on the tree associated with a random walk and the other on the boundary of the tree, which is given in terms of the Naïm kernel. Here, it is explained that up to a linear time change…
We study infinite tree and ultrametric matrices, and their action on the boundary of the tree. For each tree matrix we show the existence of a symmetric random walk associated to it and we study its Green potential. We provide a representation theorem for harmonic functions that includes simple expressions for any increasing harmonic function and the Martin kernel. In the boundary, we construct the Markov kernel whose Green function is the extension of the matrix and we simulate it by using a cascade of killing independent exponential random variables and conditionally independent uniform vari…
We study existence of percolation in the hierarchical group of order $N$, which is an ultrametric space, and transience and recurrence of random walks on the percolation clusters. The connection probability on the hierarchical group for two points separated by distance $k$ is of the form $c_k/N^{k(1+δ)}, δ>-1$, with $c_k=C_0+C_1\log k+C_2k^α$, non-negative constants $C_0, C_1, C_2$, and $α>0$. Percolation was proved in Dawson and Gorostiza (2013) for $δ<1$, and for the critical case, $δ=1,C_2>0$, with $α>2$. In this paper we improve the result for the critical case by showing percolation for $…
Ultrametric trees are trees whose leaves lie at the same distance from the root. They are used to model the genealogy of a population of particles co-existing at the same point in time. We show how the boundary of an ultrametric tree, like any compact ultrametric space, can be represented in a simple way via the so-called comb metric. We display a variety of examples of random combs and explain how they can be used in applications. In particular, we review some old and recent results regarding the genetic structure of the population when throwing neutral mutations on the skeleton of the tree.
In this paper we show that the ultrametricity property remains valid in random field Ising models with independent disorder whenever the field strength is a small perturbation.
This paper studies the delocalized regime of an ultrametric random operator whose independent entries have variances decaying in a suitable hierarchical metric on $\mathbb{N}$. When the decay-rate of the off-diagonal variances is sufficiently slow, we prove that the spectral measures are uniformly $θ$-Hölder continuous for all $θ\in (0,1)$. In finite volumes, we prove that the corresponding ultrametric random matrices have completely extended eigenfunctions and that the local eigenvalue statistics converge in the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta universality class.
Kingman (1978)'s representation theorem states that any exchangeable partition of $\mathbb{N}$ can be represented as a paintbox based on a random mass-partition. Similarly, any exchangeable composition (i.e. ordered partition of $\mathbb{N}$) can be represented as a paintbox based on an interval-partition (Gnedin 1997). Our first main result is that any exchangeable coalescent process (not necessarily Markovian) can be represented as a paintbox based on a random non-decreasing process valued in interval-partitions, called nested interval-partition, generalizing the notion of comb metric space …
We study the hierarchical analogue of power-law random band matrices, a symmetric ensemble of random matrices with independent entries whose variances decay exponentially in the metric induced by the tree topology on $\mathbb{N}$. We map out the entirety of the localization regime by proving the localization of eigenfunctions and Poisson statistics of the suitably scaled eigenvalues. Our results complement existing works on complete delocalization and random matrix universality, thereby proving the existence of a phase transition in this model.
We study percolation on the hierarchical lattice of order $N$ where the probability of connection between two points separated by distance $k$ is of the form $c_k/N^{k(1+δ)},\; δ>-1$. Since the distance is an ultrametric, there are significant differences with percolation on the Euclidean lattice. There are two non-critical regimes: $δ<1$, where percolation occurs, and $δ>1$, where it does not occur. In the critical case, $δ=1$, we use an approach in the spirit of the renormalization group method of statistical physics and connectivity results of Erdős-Renyi random graphs play a key role. We f…
We study the ultrametric random matrix ensemble, whose independent entries have variances decaying exponentially in the metric induced by the tree topology on $\mathbb{N}$, and map out the entire localization regime in terms of eigenfunction localization and Poisson statistics. Our results complement existing works on complete delocalization and random matrix universality, thereby proving the existence of a phase transition in this model. In the simpler case of the Rosenzweig-Porter model, the analysis yields a complete characterization of the transition in the local statistics. The proofs are…
Replica symmetry breaking postulates that near optima of spin glass Hamiltonians have an ultrametric structure. Namely, near optima can be associated to leaves of a tree, and the Euclidean distance between them corresponds to the distance along this tree. We survey recent progress towards a rigorous proof of this picture in the context of mixed $p$-spin spin glass models. We focus in particular on the following topics: $(i)$~The structure of critical points of the Hamiltonian; $(ii)$~The realization of the ultrametric tree as near optima of a suitable TAP free energy; $(iii)$~The construction …
Random Overlap Structures (ROSt's) are random elements on the space of probability measures on the unit ball of a Hilbert space, where two measures are identified if they differ by an isometry. In spin glasses, they arise as natural limits of Gibbs measures under the appropriate algebra of functions. We prove that the so called `cavity mapping' on the space of ROSt's is continuous, leading to a proof of the stochastic stability conjecture for the limiting Gibbs measures of a large class of spin glass models. Similar arguments yield the proofs of a number of other properties of ROSt's that may …
We call a \emph{comb} a map $f:I\to [0,\infty)$, where $I$ is a compact interval, such that $\{f\ge \varepsilon\}$ is finite for any $\varepsilon$. A comb induces a (pseudo)-distance $\dtf$ on $\{f=0\}$ defined by $\dtf(s,t) = \max_{(s\wedge t, s\vee t)} f$. We describe the completion $\bar I$ of $\{f=0\}$ for this metric, which is a compact ultrametric space called \emph{comb metric space}. Conversely, we prove that any compact, ultrametric space $(U,d)$ without isolated points is isometric to a comb metric space. We show various examples of the comb representation of well-known ultrametric s…
The goal of this work is to decompose random populations with a genealogy in subfamilies of a given degree of kinship and to obtain a notion of infinitely divisible genealogies. We model the genealogical structure of a population by (equivalence classes of) ultrametric measure spaces (um-spaces) as elements of the Polish space U which we recall. In order to then analyze the family structure in this coding we introduce an algebraic structure on um-spaces (a consistent collection of semigroups). This allows us to obtain a path of collections of subfamilies of fixed kinship h (described as ultram…
We discuss a spin glass reminiscent of the Random Energy Model, which allows in particular to recast the Parisi minimization into a more classical Gibbs variational principle, thereby shedding some light on the physical meaning of the order parameter of the Parisi theory. As an application, we study the impact of an extensive cavity field on Derrida's REM: Despite its simplicity, this model displays some interesting features such as ultrametricity and chaos in temperature.
We continue our study of the scale-inhomogeneous Gaussian free field introduced in Arguin and Ouimet (2016). Firstly, we compute the limiting free energy on V_N and adapt a technique of Bovier and Kurkova (2004b) to determine the limiting two-overlap distribution. The adaptation was already successfully applied in the simpler case of Arguin and Zindy (2015), where the limiting free energy was computed for the field with two levels (in the center of V_N) and the limiting two-overlap distribution was determined in the homogeneous case. Our results agree with the analogous quantities for the Gene…
For several models of random constraint satisfaction problems, it was conjectured by physicists and later proved that a sharp satisfiability transition occurs. For random $k$-SAT and related models it happens at clause density $α$ around $2^k$. Just below the threshold, further results suggest that the solution space has a "1RSB" structure of a large bounded number of near-orthogonal clusters inside the space of variable assignments $\{0,1\}^N$. In the unsatisfiable regime, it is natural to consider max-satisfiability: violating the least number of constraints. For a simplified variant, the st…
The goal of these lectures is to review some mathematical aspects of random tree models used in evolutionary biology to model gene trees or species trees. We start with stochastic models of tree shapes (finite trees without edge lengths), culminating in the $β$-family of Aldous' branching models. We next introduce real trees (trees as metric spaces) and show how to study them through their contour, provided they are properly measured and ordered. We then focus on the reduced tree, or coalescent tree, which is the tree spanned by individuals/species alive at the same fixed time. We show how red…
