We extend results of R. Holley beyond the integer lattice to a large class of groups which includes free groups. In particular we show that a shift-invariant measure is Gibbs if and only if it is Glauber-invariant. Moreover, any shift-invariant measure converges weakly to the set of Gibbs measures when evolved under Glauber dynamics. These results are proven using a new notion of free energy density relative to a sofic approximation by homomorphisms. Any measure which minimizes free energy density is Gibbs.
In this paper, we present a novel extension to the classical path coupling method to statistical mechanical models which we refer to as aggregate path coupling. In conjunction with large deviations estimates, we use this aggregate path coupling method to prove rapid mixing of Glauber dynamics for a large class of statistical mechanical models, including models that exhibit discontinuous phase transitions which have traditionally been more difficult to analyze rigorously. The parameter region for rapid mixing for the generalized Curie-Weiss-Potts model is derived as a new application of the agg…
Continuous time Feynman-Kac measures on path spaces are central in applied probability, partial differential equation theory, as well as in quantum physics. This article presents a new duality formula between normalized Feynman-Kac distribution and their mean field particle interpretations. Among others, this formula allows us to design a reversible particle Gibbs-Glauber sampler for continuous time Feynman-Kac integration on path spaces. This result extends the particle Gibbs samplers introduced by Andrieu-Doucet-Holenstein [2] in the context of discrete generation models to continuous time F…
The maximum independent set (MIS) problem is a well-studied combinatorial optimization problem that naturally arises in many applications, such as wireless communication, information theory and statistical mechanics. MIS problem is NP-hard, thus many results in the literature focus on fast generation of maximal independent sets of high cardinality. One possibility is to combine Gibbs sampling with coupling from the past arguments to detect convergence to the stationary regime. This results in a sampling procedure with time complexity that depends on the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics Mark…
We derive a continuum mean-curvature flow as a certain hydrodynamic scaling limit of Glauber-Kawasaki dynamics with speed change. The Kawasaki part describes the movement of particles through particle interactions. It is speeded up in a diffusive space-time scaling. The Glauber part governs the creation and annihilation of particles. The Glauber part is set to favor two levels of particle density. It is also speeded up in time, but at a lesser rate than the Kawasaki part. Under this scaling, a mean-curvature interface flow emerges, with a homogenized `surface tension-mobility' parameter reflec…
This paper is devoted to the construction and study of an equilibrium Glauber-type dynamics of infinite continuous particle systems. This dynamics is a special case of a spatial birth and death process. On the space $Γ$ of all locally finite subsets (configurations) in ${\Bbb R}^d$, we fix a Gibbs measure $μ$ corresponding to a general pair potential $ϕ$ and activity $z>0$. We consider a Dirichlet form $ \cal E$ on $L^2(Γ,μ)$ which corresponds to the generator $H$ of the Glauber dynamics. We prove the existence of a Markov process $\bf M$ on $Γ$ that is properly associated with $\cal E$. In th…
We revisit the $R-$positivity of nearest neighbors matrices on ${\ZZ_+}$ and the Gibbs measures on the set of nearest neighbors trajectories on ${\ZZ_+}$ whose Hamiltonians award either visits to sites a or visits to edges. We give conditions that guarantee the $R-$positivity or equivalently the existence of the infinite volume Gibbs measure, and we show geometrical recurrence of the associated Markov chain. In this work we generalize and sharpen results obtained in [3] and [6].
In a statistical mechanics model with unbounded spins, we prove uniqueness of the Gibbs measure under various assumptions on finite volume functional inequalities. We follow the approach of G. Royer (1999) and obtain uniqueness by showing convergence properties of a Glauber-Langevin dynamics. The result was known when the measures on the box $[-n,n]^d$ (with free boundary conditions) satisfied the same logarithmic Sobolev inequality. We generalize this in two directions: either the constants may be allowed to grow sub-linearly in the diameter, or we may suppose a weaker inequality than log-Sob…
Finding a ground state of a given Hamiltonian is an important but hard problem. One of the potential methods is to use a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) to sample the Gibbs distribution whose highest peaks correspond to the ground states. In this short paper, we use stochastic cellular automata (SCA) and see if it is possible to find a ground state faster than the conventional MCMCs, such as the Glauber dynamics. We show that, if the temperature is sufficiently high, it is possible for SCA to have more spin-flips per update in average than Glauber and, at the same time, to have an equilibrium …
We consider Glauber dynamics reversible with respect to Gibbs measures with heavy tails. Spins are unbounded. The interactions are bounded and finite range. The self potential enters into two classes of measures, $κ$-concave probability measure and sub-exponential laws, for which it is known that no exponential decay can occur. We prove, using coercive inequalities, that the associated infinite volume semi-group decay to equilibrium polynomially and stretched exponentially, respectively. Thus improving and extending previous results by Bobkov and Zegarlinski.
We deal with two following classes of equilibrium stochastic dynamics of infinite particle systems in continuum: hopping particles (also called Kawasaki dynamics), i.e., a dynamics where each particle randomly hops over the space, and birth-and-death process in continuum (or Glauber dynamics), i.e., a dynamics where there is no motion of particles, but rather particles die, or are born at random. We prove that a wide class of Glauber dynamics can be derived as a scaling limit of Kawasaki dynamics. More precisely, we prove the convergence of respective generators on a set of cylinder functions,…
We present novel results for fast mixing of Glauber dynamics using the newly introduced and powerful Spectral Independence method from [Anari, Liu, Oveis-Gharan: FOCS 2020]. In our results, the parameters of the Gibbs distribution are expressed in terms of the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix of $G$, or that of the Hashimoto non-backtracking matrix. The analysis relies on new techniques that we introduce to bound the maximum eigenvalue of the pairwise influence matrix $\mathcal{I}^{Λ,τ}_{G}$ for the two spin Gibbs distribution $μ$. There is a common framework that underlies these techni…
In this paper we study homogeneous Gibbs measures on a Cayley tree, subjected to an infinite-temperature Glauber evolution, and consider their (non-)Gibbsian properties. We show that the intermediate Gibbs state (which in zero field is the free-boundary-condition Gibbs state) behaves different from the plus and the minus state. E.g. at large times, all configurations are bad for the intermediate state, whereas the plus configuration never is bad for the plus state. Moreover, we show that for each state there are two transitions. For the intermediate state there is a transition from a Gibbsian …
A Kawasaki dynamics in continuum is a dynamics of an infinite system of interacting particles in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which randomly hop over the space. In this paper, we deal with an equilibrium Kawasaki dynamics which has a Gibbs measure $mu$ as invariant measure. We study a scaling limit of such a dynamics, derived through a scaling of the jump rate. Informally, we expect that, in the limit, only jumps of ``infinite length'' will survive, i.e., we expect to arrive at a Glauber dynamics in continuum (a birth-and-death process in $\mathbb{R}^d$). We prove that, in the low activity-high temperature …
We study the hard-core model defined on independent sets of an input graph where the independent sets are weighted by a parameter $λ>0$. For constant $Δ$, previous work of Weitz (2006) established an FPTAS for the partition function for graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ when $λ< λ_c(Δ)$. The threshold $λ_c(Δ)$ is the critical point for the phase transition for uniqueness/non-uniqueness on the infinite $Δ$-regular trees. Sly (2010) showed that there is no FPRAS, unless NP=RP, when $λ>λ_c(Δ)$. The running time of Weitz's algorithm is exponential in $\log(Δ)$. Here we present an FPRAS for the partitio…
We study the single-site Glauber dynamics for the fugacity $λ$, Hard-core model on the random graph $G(n, d/n)$. We show that for the typical instances of the random graph $G(n,d/n)$ and for fugacity $λ< \frac{d^d}{(d-1)^{d+1}}$, the mixing time of Glauber dynamics is $n^{1 + O(1/\log \log n)}$. Our result improves on the recent elegant algorithm in [Bezakova, Galanis, Goldberg Stefankovic; ICALP'22]. The algorithm there is a MCMC based sampling algorithm, but it is not the Glauber dynamics. Our algorithm here is simpler, as we use the classic Glauber dynamics. Furthermore, the bounds on mixin…
In this paper, we consider Vannimenus model with competing nearest-neighbors and prolonged next-nearest-neighbors interactions on a Cayley tree. For this model we define Markov random fields with memory of length 2. By using a new approach, we obtain new sets of Gibbs measures of Ising-Vannimenus model on Cayley tree of order 2. We construct the recurrence equations corresponding Ising-Vannimenus model. We prove the Kolmogorov consistency condition. We investigate the translation-invariant and periodic non transition-invariant Gibbs measures for the model. We find new sets of Gibbs measures di…
We consider the soft-core Widom-Rowlinson model for particles with spins and holes, on a Cayley tree of order $d$ (which has $d + 1$ nearest neighbours), depending on repulsion strength $β$ between particles of different signs and on an activity parameter $λ$ for particles. We analyse Gibbsian properties of the time-evolved intermediate Gibbs measure of the static model, under a spin-flip time evolution, in a regime of large repulsion strength $β$. We first show that there is a dynamical transition, in which the measure becomes non-Gibbsian at large times, independently of the particle activit…
We continue our study of Gibbs-non-Gibbs dynamical transitions. In the present paper we consider a system of Ising spins on a large discrete torus with a Kac-type interaction subject to an independent spin-flip dynamics (infinite-temperature Glauber dynamics). We show that, in accordance with the program outlined in \cite{vEFedHoRe10}, in the thermodynamic limit Gibbs-non-Gibbs dynamical transitions are \emph{equivalent} to bifurcations in the set of global minima of the large-deviation rate function for the trajectories of the empirical density \emph{conditional} on their endpoint. More preci…
We consider random walk in a space-time random potential, also known as directed random polymer measures, on the planar square lattice with nearest-neighbor steps and general i.i.d. weights on the vertices. We construct covariant cocycles and use them to prove new results on existence, uniqueness/non-uniqueness, and asymptotic directions of semi-infinite polymer measures (solutions to the Dobrushin-Lanford-Ruelle equations). We also prove non-existence of covariant or deterministically directed bi-infinite polymer measures. Along the way, we prove almost sure existence of Busemann function lim…
We prove an optimal mixing time bound on the single-site update Markov chain known as the Glauber dynamics or Gibbs sampling in a variety of settings. Our work presents an improved version of the spectral independence approach of Anari et al. (2020) and shows $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time on any $n$-vertex graph of bounded degree when the maximum eigenvalue of an associated influence matrix is bounded. As an application of our results, for the hard-core model on independent sets weighted by a fugacity $λ$, we establish $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time for the Glauber dynamics on any $n$-vertex graph of c…
We consider $\mathbb Z$-valued $p$-SOS-models with nearest neighbor interactions of the form $|ω_v-ω_w|^p$, and finite-spin ferromagnetic models on regular trees. This includes the classical SOS-model, the discrete Gaussian model and the Potts model. We exhibit a family of extremal inhomogeneous (i.e. tree automorphism non-invariant) Gibbs measures arising as low temperature perturbations of ground states (local energy minimizers), which have a sparse enough set of broken bonds together with uniformly bounded increments along them. These low temperature states in general do not possess any sym…
We present a new lower bound on the spectral gap of the Glauber dynamics for the Gibbs distribution of a spectrally independent $q$-spin system on a graph $G = (V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ$. Notably, for several interesting examples, our bound covers the entire regime of $Δ$ excluded by arguments based on coupling with the stationary distribution. As concrete applications, by combining our new lower bound with known spectral independence computations and known coupling arguments: (1) We show that for a triangle-free graph $G = (V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3$, the Glauber dynamics for the…
We show aging of Glauber-type dynamics on the random energy model, in the sense that we obtain the scaling limits of the clock process and of the age process. The latter encodes the Gibbs weight of the configuration occupied by the dynamics. Both limits are expressed in terms of stable subordinators.
We prove a metastability result for finitary microstates which are good models for a Gibbs measure for a nearest-neighbor interaction on a finitely-generated group. This is used to show that any maximal-entropy joining of two such Gibbs states is a relative product over the tail $σ$-algebra, except in degenerate cases. We also use results on extremal cuts of random graphs to further investigate optimal self-joinings of the Ising model on a free group.
We define a class of properties on random plane trees, which we call subtree additive properties, inspired by the combinatorics of certain biologically-interesting properties in a plane tree model of RNA secondary structure. The class of subtree additive properties includes the Wiener index and path length (total ladder distance and total ladder contact distance, respectively, in the biological context). We then investigate the asymptotic distribution of these subtree additive properties on a random plane tree distributed according to a Gibbs distribution arising from the Nearest Neighbor Ther…
In this paper we complete the analysis of a statistical mechanics model on Cayley trees of any degree, started in [EsHaRo12,EsRo10,BoEsRo13,JaKuBo14,Bo17]. The potential is of nearest-neighbor type and the local state space is compact but uncountable. Based on the system parameters we prove existence of a critical value $θ_{\rm c}$ such that for $θ\le θ_{\rm c}$ there is a unique translation-invariant splitting Gibbs measure. For $θ_{\rm c}<θ$ there is a phase transition with exactly three translation-invariant splitting Gibbs measures. The proof rests on an analysis of fixed points of an asso…
Consider random $d$-regular graphs, i.e., random graphs such that there are exactly $d$ edges from each vertex for some $d\ge 3$. We study both the configuration model version of this graph, which has occasional multi-edges and self-loops, as well as the simple version of it, which is a $d$-regular graph chosen uniformly at random from the collection of all $d$-regular graphs. In this paper, we discuss mixing times of Glauber dynamics for the Ising model with an external magnetic field on a random $d$-regular graph, both in the quenched as well as the annealed settings. Let $β$ be the inverse …
We consider the sequence of Gibbs measures of Ising models with Kac interaction defined on a periodic two-dimensional discrete torus near criticality. Using the convergence of the Glauber dynamic proven by H. Weber and J.C. Mourrat and a method by H. Weber and P. Tsatsoulis, we show tightness for the sequence of Gibbs measures of the Ising-Kac model near criticality and characterise the law of the limit as the $Φ^4_2$ measure on the torus. Our result is very similar to the one obtained by M. Cassandro, R. Marra and E. Presutti on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, but our strategy takes advantage of the dynamic,…
We consider nearest-neighbor fertile hard-core models, with three states, on a homogeneous Cayley tree. It is known that there are four type of such models. We investigate all of them and describe translation-invariant and periodic hard-core Gibbs measures. Also we construct a continuum set of non-periodic Gibbs measures.
We prove that all Gibbs states of the q-state nearest neighbor Potts model on Z^2 below the critical temperature are convex combinations of the q pure phases; in particular, they are all translation invariant. To achieve this goal, we consider such models in large finite boxes with arbitrary boundary condition, and prove that the center of the box lies deeply inside a pure phase with high probability. Our estimate of the finite-volume error term is of essentially optimal order, which stems from the Brownian scaling of fluctuating interfaces. The results hold at any supercritical value of the i…
We consider the (scalar) gradient fields $η=(η_b)$--with $b$ denoting the nearest-neighbor edges in $\Z^2$--that are distributed according to the Gibbs measure proportional to $\texte^{-βH(η)}ν(\textdη)$. Here $H=\sum_bV(η_b)$ is the Hamiltonian, $V$ is a symmetric potential, $β>0$ is the inverse temperature, and $ν$ is the Lebesgue measure on the linear space defined by imposing the loop condition $η_{b_1}+η_{b_2}=η_{b_3}+η_{b_4}$ for each plaquette $(b_1,b_2,b_3,b_4)$ in $\Z^2$. For convex $V$, Funaki and Spohn have shown that ergodic infinite-volume Gibbs measures are characterized by their…
We consider a nearest-neighbor SOS model, spin values $0,1,..., m$, $m\geq 2$, on a Cayley tree of order $k$ . We mainly assume that $m=2$ and study translation-invariant (TI) and `splitting' (S) Gibbs measures (GMs). For $m=2$, in the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) case, a symmetric TISGM is unique for all temperatures. In the ferromagnetic (FM) case, for $m=2$, the number of symmetric TISGMs varies with the temperature: here we identify a critical inverse temperature, $β^1_{\rm{cr}}$ ($=T_{\rm{cr}}^{\rm{STISG}}$) $\in (0,\infty)$ such that $\forall$ $0\leq β\leqβ^1_{\rm{cr}}$, there exists a uniqu…
We consider gradient fields $(ϕ_x:x\in \mathbb{Z}^d)$ whose law takes the Gibbs--Boltzmann form $Z^{-1}\exp\{-\sum_{< x,y>}V(ϕ_y-ϕ_x)\}$, where the sum runs over nearest neighbors. We assume that the potential $V$ admits the representation \[V(η):=-\log\int\varrho({d}κ)\exp\biggl[-{1/2}κ\et a^2\biggr],\] where $\varrho$ is a positive measure with compact support in $(0,\infty)$. Hence, the potential $V$ is symmetric, but nonconvex in general. While for strictly convex $V$'s, the translation-invariant, ergodic gradient Gibbs measures are completely characterized by their tilt, a nonconvex poten…
The exponential random graph model (ERGM) is a central object in the study of clustering properties in social networks as well as canonical ensembles in statistical physics. Despite some breakthrough works in the mathematical understanding of ERGM, most notably in (Bhamidi, Bresler, Sly, 2011) through the analysis of a natural Heat-bath Glauber dynamics, and in (Chatterjee, Diaconis, 2013), (Eldan, Gross, 2018) via a large deviation theoretic perspective, several basic questions have remained unanswered owing to the lack of exact solvability unlike the much studied Curie-Weiss model (Ising mod…
The paper concerns the $q$-state Potts model (i.e., with spin values in $\{1,\dots,q\}$) on a Cayley tree $\mathbb{T}^k$ of degree $k\geq 2$ (i.e., with $k+1$ edges emanating from each vertex) in an external (possibly random) field. We construct the so-called splitting Gibbs measures (SGM) using generalized boundary conditions on a sequence of expanding balls, subject to a suitable compatibility criterion. Hence, the problem of existence/uniqueness of SGM is reduced to solvability of the corresponding functional equation on the tree. In particular, we introduce the notion of translation-invari…
Consider a low temperature stochastic Ising model in the phase coexistence regime with Markov semigroup $P_t$. A fundamental and still largely open problem is the understanding of the long time behavior of $\d_\h P_t$ when the initial configuration $\h$ is sampled from a highly disordered state $ν$ (e.g. a product Bernoulli measure or a high temperature Gibbs measure). Exploiting recent progresses in the analysis of the mixing time of Monte Carlo Markov chains for discrete spin models on a regular $b$-ary tree $\Tree^b$, we tackle the above problem for the Ising and hard core gas (independent …
We consider a nearest-neighbor four state hard-core (HC) model on the homogeneous Cayley tree of order $k$. The Hamiltonian of the model is considered on a set of "admissible" configurations. Admissibility is specified through a graph with four vertices. We first exhibit conditions (on the graph and on the parameters) under which the model has a unique Gibbs measure. Next we turn to some specific cases. Namely, first we study, in the case of a particular graph (the diamond), translation-invariant and periodic Gibbs measures. We provide in both cases the equations of the transition lines separa…
We consider continuous-spin models on the $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice with the spins $σ_x$ \emph{a priori} uniformly distributed over the unit sphere in $\R^n$ (with $n\ge2$) and the interaction energy having two parts: a short-range part, represented by a potential $Φ$, and a long-range antiferromagnetic part $λ|x-y|^{-s}σ_x\cdotσ_y$ for some exponent $s>d$ and $λ\ge0$. We assume that $Φ$ is twice continuously differentiable, finite range and invariant under rigid rotations of all spins. For $d\ge1$, $s\in(d,d+2]$ and any $λ>0$, we then show that the expectation of each $σ_x$ vanishes …
