We study the relative entropy density for generalized Gibbs measures. We first show its existence and obtain a familiar expression in terms of entropy and relative energy for a class of ``almost Gibbsian measures'' (almost sure continuity of conditional probabilities). For quasilocal measures, we obtain a full variational principle. For the joint measures of the random field Ising model, we show that the weak Gibbs property holds, with an almost surely rapidly decaying translation-invariant potential. For these measures we show that the variational principle fails as soon as the measures lose the almost Gibbs property. These examples suggest that the class of weakly Gibbsian measures is too broad from the perspective of a reasonable thermodynamic formalism.
We study the problem of continuum percolation in infinite volume Gibbs measures for particles with an attractive pair potential, with a focus on low temperatures (large $β$). The main results are bounds on percolation thresholds $ρ_\pm(β)$ in terms of the density rather than the chemical potential or activity. In addition, we prove a variational formula for a large deviations rate function for cluster size distributions. This formula establishes a link with the Gibbs variational principle and a form of equivalence of ensembles, and allows us to combine knowledge on finite volume, canonical Gib…
We study the thermodynamic formalism for generalized Gibbs measures, such as renormalization group transformations of Gibbs measures or joint measures of disordered spin systems. We first show existence of the relative entropy density and obtain a familiar expression in terms of entropy and relative energy for "almost Gibbsian measures" (almost sure continuity of conditional probabilities). We also describe these measures as equilibrium states and establish an extension of the usual variational principle. As a corollary, we obtain a full variational principle for quasilocal measures. For the j…
The entropy of an ergodic finite-alphabet process can be computed from a single typical sample path x_1^n using the entropy of the k-block empirical probability and letting k grow with $n$ roughly like log n. We further assume that the distribution of the process is a g-measure; g-measures form a large class of Gibbs measures. We prove large deviation principles for conditional, non-conditional and relative k(n)-block empirical entropies.
This paper deals with stationary Gibbsian point processes on the plane with an interaction that depends on the tiles of the Delaunay triangulation of points via a bounded triangle potential. It is shown that the class of these Gibbs processes includes all minimisers of the associated free energy density and is therefore nonempty. Conversely, each such Gibbs process minimises the free energy density, provided the potential satisfies a weak long-range assumption.
We investigate a probabilistic model for routeing of messages in relay-augmented multihop ad-hoc networks, where each transmitter sends one message to the origin. Given the (random) transmitter locations, we weight the family of random, uniformly distributed message trajectories by an exponential probability weight, favouring trajectories with low interference (measured in terms of signal-to-interference ratio) and trajectory families with little congestion (measured in terms of the number of pairs of hops using the same relay). Under the resulting Gibbs measure, the system targets the best co…
We investigate the Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model on the d-dimensional torus with Kac interaction. We use a variational approach for profiles inspired by that of Fernandez, den Hollander and Martınez for their study of the Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions of a dynamical Kac-Ising model on the torus. As our main result, we show that the mean-field thresholds dividing Gibbsian from non-Gibbsian behavior are sharp in the fuzzy Kac-Potts model with class size unequal two. On the way to this result we prove a large deviation principle for color profiles with diluted total mass densities and u…
We restore part of the thermodynamic formalism for some renormalized measures that are known to be non-Gibbsian. We first point out that a recent theory due to Pfister implies that for block-transformed measures free energies and relative entropy densities exist and are conjugate convex functionals. We then determine a necessary and sufficient condition for consistency with a specification that is quasilocal in a fixed direction. As corollaries we obtain consistency results for models with FKG monotonicity and for models with appropriate "continuity rates". For (noisy) decimations or projectio…
We are interested in the study of Gibbs and equilbrium probabilities on the lattice $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}$. Consider the unilateral full-shift defined on the non-compact set $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}$ and an $α$-Hölder continuous potential $A$ from $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}$ into $\mathbb{R}$. From a suitable class of a priori probability measures $ν$ (over the Borelian sets of $\mathbb{R}$) we define the Ruelle operator associated to $A$ (using an adequate extension of this operator to the compact set $\overline{\mathbb{R}}^\mathbb{N}=(S^1)^\mathbb{N}$) and we show the existence of eigenfunc…
Importance sampling of target probability distributions belonging to a given convex class is considered. Motivated by previous results, the cost of importance sampling is quantified using the relative entropy of the target with respect to proposal distributions. Using a reference measure as a reference for cost, we prove under some general conditions that the worst-case optimal proposal is precisely given by the distribution minimizing entropy with respect to the reference within the considered convex class of distributions. The latter conditions are in particular satisfied when the convex cla…
In this paper we derived a variational principle for the specific entropy on the context of symbolic dynamics of compact metric space alphabets and use this result to obtain the uniqueness of the equilibrium states associated to a Walters potential.
Using an alternative notion of entropy introduced by Datta, the max-entropy, we present a new simplified framework to study the minimizers of the specific free energy for random fields which are weakly dependent in the sense of Lewis, Pfister, and Sullivan. The framework is then applied to derive the variational principle for the loop $O(n)$ model and the Ising model in a random percolation environment in the nonmagnetic phase, and we explain how to extend the variational principle to similar models. To demonstrate the generality of the framework, we indicate how to naturally fit into it the v…
Let $(W,H,μ)$ be the classical Wiener space where $H$ is the Cameron-Martin space which consists of the primitives of the elements of $L^2([0,1],\,dt)\otimes \R^d$, we denote by $L^2_a(μ,H)$ the equivalence classes w.r.t. $dt\times dμ$ whose Lebesgue densities $s\to\dot{u}(s,w)$ are almost surely adapted to the canonical Brownian filtration. If $f$ is a Wiener functional s.t. $\frac{1}{E[e^{-f}]}e^{-f}dμ$ is of finite relative entropy w.r.t. $μ$, we prove that \beaa J_\star&=& \inf\left(E_μ\left[f\circ U+\half |u|_H^2\right]: u\in L_a^2(μ,H)\right)\\ &\geq&-\log E_μ[e^{-f}]=\inf\left(\int_W fd…
We relate transport-entropy inequalities to the study of critical points of functionals defined on the space of probability measures. This approach leads in particular to a new proof of a result by Otto and Villani [43] showing that the logarithmic Sobolev inequality implies Talagrand's transport inequality.
The variational principle for Gibbs point processes with general finite range interaction is proved. Namely, the Gibbs point processes are identified as the minimizers of the free excess energy equals to the sum of the specific entropy and the mean energy. The interaction is very general and includes superstable pairwise potential, finite or infinite multibody potential, geometrical interaction, hardcore interaction. The only restrictive assumption involves the finite range property.
We perform a detailed study of Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions for the Curie-Weiss model subject to independent spin-flip dynamics ("infinite-temperature" dynamics). We show that, in this setup, the program outlined in van Enter, Fernández, den Hollander and Redig can be fully completed, namely that Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions are equivalent to bifurcations in the set of global minima of the large-deviation rate function for the trajectories of the magnetization conditioned on their endpoint. As a consequence, we show that the time-evolved model is non-Gibbs if and only if this set is not a single…
Atar, Chowdhary and Dupuis have recently exhibited a variational formula for exponential integrals of bounded measurable functions in terms of Rényi divergences. We develop a variational characterization of the Rényi divergences between two probability distributions on a measurable sace in terms of relative entropies. When combined with the elementary variational formula for exponential integrals of bounded measurable functions in terms of relative entropy, this yields the variational formula of Atar, Chowdhary and Dupuis as a corollary. We also develop an analogous variational characterizatio…
In this work we study the necessary and sufficient conditions for a positive random variable whose expectation under the Wiener measure is one, to be represented as the Radon-Nikodym derivative of the image of the Wiener measure under an adapted perturbation of identity with the help of the associated innovation process. We prove that the innovation conjecture holds if and only if the original process is almost surely invertible. We also give variational characterizations of the invertibility of the perturbations of identity and the representability of a positive random variable whose total ma…
We formulate and prove a variational principle (in the sense of thermodynamics) for random domino tilings, or equivalently for the dimer model on a square grid. This principle states that a typical tiling of an arbitrary finite region can be described by a function that maximizes an entropy integral. We associate an entropy to every sort of local behavior domino tilings can exhibit, and prove that almost all tilings lie within epsilon (for an appropriate metric) of the unique entropy-maximizing solution. This gives a solution to the dimer problem with fully general boundary conditions, thereby…
We generalize several results of the classical theory of Thermodynamic Formalism by considering a compact metric space $M$ as the state space. We analyze the shift acting on $M^\mathbb{N}$ and consider a general a-priori probability for defining the Transfer (Ruelle) operator. We study potentials $A$ which can depend on the infinite set of coordinates in $M^\mathbb{N}.$ We define entropy and by its very nature it is always a nonpositive number. The concepts of entropy and transfer operator are linked. If M is not a finite set there exist Gibbs states with arbitrary negative value of entropy. I…
