In this paper, we study the asymptotic thin-shell width concentration for random vectors uniformly distributed in Orlicz balls. We provide both asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the probability of such a random vector $X_n$ being in a thin shell of radius $\sqrt{n}$ times the asymptotic value of $n^{-1/2}\left(\mathbb E\left[\| X_n\|_2^2\right]\right)^{1/2}$ (as $n\to\infty$), showing that in certain ranges our estimates are optimal. In particular, our estimates significantly improve upon the currently best known general Lee-Vempala bound when the deviation parameter $t=t_n$ goes down to zero as the dimension $n$ of the ambient space increases. We shall also determine in this work the precise asymptotic value of the isotropic constant for Orlicz balls. Our approach is based on moderate deviation principles and a connection between the uniform distribution on Orlicz balls and Gibbs measures at certain critical inverse temperatures with potentials given by Orlicz functions, an idea recently presented by Kabluchko and Prochno in [The maximum entropy principle and volumetric properties of Orlicz balls, J. Math. Anal. Appl. {\bf 495}(1) 2021, 1--19].
We prove asymptotic estimates for the volume of families of Orlicz balls in high dimensions. As an application, we describe a large family of Orlicz balls which verify a famous conjecture of Kannan, Lov{á}sz and Simonovits about spectral gaps. We also study the asymptotic independence of coordinates on uniform random vectors on Orlicz balls, as well as integrability properties of their linear functionals.
In this paper, we prove a Sanov-type large deviation principle for the sequence of empirical measures of vectors chosen uniformly at random from an Orlicz ball. From this level-$2$ large deviation result, in a combination with Gibbs conditioning, entropy maximization and an Orlicz version of the Poincaré-Maxwell-Borel lemma, we deduce a conditional limit theorem for high-dimensional Orlicz balls. Roughly speaking, the latter shows that if $V_1$ and $V_2$ are Orlicz functions, then random points in the $V_1$-Orlicz ball, conditioned on having a small $V_2$-Orlicz radius, look like an appropriat…
Antilla, Ball and Perissinaki proved that the squares of coordinate functions in $\ell_p^n$ are negatively correlated. This paper extends their results to balls in generalized Orlicz norms on R^n. From this, the concentration of the Euclidean norm and a form of the Central Limit Theorem for the generalized Orlicz balls is deduced. Also, a counterexample for the square negative correlation hypothesis for 1-symmetric bodies is given. Currently the CLT is known in full generality for convex bodies (see the paper "Power-law estimates for the central limit theorem for convex sets" by B. Klartag), w…
Random variables equidistributed on convex bodies have received quite a lot of attention in the last few years. In this paper we prove the negative association property (which generalizes the subindependence of coordinate slabs) for generalized Orlicz balls. This allows us to give a strong concentration property, along with a few moment comparison inequalities. Also, the theory of negatively associated variables is being developed in its own right, which allows us to hope more results will be available. Moreover, a simpler proof of a more general result for $\ell_p^n$ balls is given.
We study the precise asymptotic volume of balls in Orlicz spaces and show that the volume of the intersection of two Orlicz balls undergoes a phase transition when the dimension of the ambient space tends to infinity. This generalizes a result of Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger [GAFA, Lecture notes in Math. 1469 (1991), 174--178] for $\ell_p^d$-balls. As another application, we determine the precise asymptotic volume ratio for $2$-concave Orlicz spaces $\ell_M^d$. Our method rests on ideas from statistical mechanics and large deviations theory, more precisely the maximum entropy or Gibbs prin…
Negative association for a family of random variables $(X_i)$ means that for any coordinate--wise increasing functions $f,g$ we have $$\E f(X_{i_1},...,X_{i_k}) g(X_{j_1},...,X_{j_l}) \leq \E f(X_{i_1},...,X_{i_k}) \E g(X_{j_1},...,X_{j_l})$$ for any disjoint sets of indices $(i_m)$, $(j_n)$. It is a way to indicate the negative correlation in a family of random variables. It was first introduced in 1980s in statistics, and brought to convex geometry in 2005 to prove the Central Limit Theorem for Orlicz balls. The paper gives a relatively simple proof of negative association of absolute values…
In [A dozen de {F}inetti-style results in search of a theory, Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. 23(2)(1987), 397--423], Diaconis and Freedman studied low-dimensional projections of random vectors from the Euclidean unit sphere and the simplex in high dimensions, noting that the individual coordinates of these random vectors look like Gaussian and exponential random variables respectively. In subsequent works, Rachev and Rüschendorf and Naor and Romik unified these results by establishing a connection between $\ell_p^N$ balls and a $p$-generalized Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we …
We generalise disagreement percolation to Gibbs point processes of balls with varying radii. This allows to establish the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure and exponential decay of pair correlations in the low activity regime by comparison with a sub-critical Boolean model. Applications to the Continuum Random Cluster model and the Quermass-interaction model are presented. At the core of our proof lies an explicit dependent thinning from a Poisson point process to a dominated Gibbs point process.
In this note, we point out that infinite-volume Gibbs measures of spin glass models on the hypercube can be identified as random probability measures on the unit ball of a Hilbert space. This simple observation follows from a result of Dovbysh and Sudakov on weakly exchangeable random matrices. Limiting Gibbs measures can then be studied as single well-defined objects. This approach naturally extends the space of Random Overlap Structures as defined by Aizenman, Sims and Starr. We discuss the Ruelle Probability Cascades and the stochastic stability within this framework. As an application, we …
Consider the radial nonlinear wave equation $-\partial_t^2 u + Δu = u^3$, $u :\mathbb{R}_t \times \mathbb{R}_x^3 \to \mathbb{R}$, $u(t,x) = u(t,|x|)$. In this paper, we construct a Gibbs measure for this system and prove its invariance under the flow of the NLW. In particular, we are in the infinite volume setting. For the finite volume analogue, specifically on the unit ball with zero boundary values, an invariant Gibbs measure was constructed by Burq, Tvetkov, and de Suzzoni as a Borel measure on super-critical Sobolev spaces. In this paper, we advocate that the finite volume Gibbs measure b…
In this paper we obtain a new family of identities for random measures on the unit ball of a separable Hilbert space which arise as the asymptotic analogues of the Gibbs measures in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and $p$-spin models and which are known to satisfy the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities. We give several applications of the new identities to structural results for such measures.
Consider the projection of an $n$-dimensional random vector onto a random $k_n$-dimensional basis, $k_n \leq n$, drawn uniformly from the Haar measure on the Stiefel manifold of orthonormal $k_n$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$, in three different asymptotic regimes as $n \rightarrow \infty$: "constant" ($k_n=k$), "sublinear" ($k_n \rightarrow \infty$ but $k_n/n \rightarrow 0$) and "linear" $k_n/n \rightarrow λ$ with $0 < λ\le 1$). When the sequence of random vectors satisfies a certain "asymptotic thin shell condition", we establish annealed large deviation principles (LDPs) for the corresponding se…
In this paper we prove that the support of a random measure on the unit ball of a separable Hilbert space that satisfies the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities must be ultrametric with probability one. This implies the Parisi ultrametricity conjecture in mean-field spin glass models, such as the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and mixed $p$-spin models, for which Gibbs' measures are known to satisfy the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities in the thermodynamic limit.
The paper concerns the $q$-state Potts model (i.e., with spin values in $\{1,\dots,q\}$) on a Cayley tree $\mathbb{T}^k$ of degree $k\geq 2$ (i.e., with $k+1$ edges emanating from each vertex) in an external (possibly random) field. We construct the so-called splitting Gibbs measures (SGM) using generalized boundary conditions on a sequence of expanding balls, subject to a suitable compatibility criterion. Hence, the problem of existence/uniqueness of SGM is reduced to solvability of the corresponding functional equation on the tree. In particular, we introduce the notion of translation-invari…
Random Overlap Structures (ROSt's) are random elements on the space of probability measures on the unit ball of a Hilbert space, where two measures are identified if they differ by an isometry. In spin glasses, they arise as natural limits of Gibbs measures under the appropriate algebra of functions. We prove that the so called `cavity mapping' on the space of ROSt's is continuous, leading to a proof of the stochastic stability conjecture for the limiting Gibbs measures of a large class of spin glass models. Similar arguments yield the proofs of a number of other properties of ROSt's that may …
