In this note, we point out that infinite-volume Gibbs measures of spin glass models on the hypercube can be identified as random probability measures on the unit ball of a Hilbert space. This simple observation follows from a result of Dovbysh and Sudakov on weakly exchangeable random matrices. Limiting Gibbs measures can then be studied as single well-defined objects. This approach naturally extends the space of Random Overlap Structures as defined by Aizenman, Sims and Starr. We discuss the Ruelle Probability Cascades and the stochastic stability within this framework. As an application, we use an idea of Parisi and Talagrand to prove that if a sequence of finite-volume Gibbs measures satisfies the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities, then the infinite-volume measure must be singular as a measure on a Hilbert space.
Gibbs' measures in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick type models satisfy two asymptotic stability properties, the Aizenman-Contucci stochastic stability and the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities, which play a fundamental role in our current understanding of these models. In this paper we show that one can combine these two properties very naturally into one unified stability property.
We analyze the statics for pure $p$-spin spherical spin glass models with $p\geq3$, at low enough temperature. With $F_{N,β}$ denoting the free energy, we compute the second order (logarithmic) term of $NF_{N,β}$ and prove that, for an appropriate centering $c_{N,β}$, $NF_{N,β}-c_{N,β}$ is a tight sequence. We establish the absence of temperature chaos and analyze the transition rate to disorder chaos of the Gibbs measure and ground state. Those results follow from the following geometric picture we prove for the Gibbs measure, of interest by itself: asymptotically, the measure splits into inf…
We consider the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model of spin glasses with ferromagnetically biased couplings. For a specific choice of the couplings mean, the resulting Gibbs measure is equivalent to the Bayesian posterior for a high-dimensional estimation problem known as `$Z_2$ synchronization'. Statistical physics suggests to compute the expectation with respect to this Gibbs measure (the posterior mean in the synchronization problem), by minimizing the so-called Thouless-Anderson-Palmer (TAP) free energy, instead of the mean field (MF) free energy. We prove that this identification is correct, pr…
We introduce some applications of Stein's method in the high temperature analysis of spin glasses. Stein's method allows the direct analysis of the Gibbs measure without having to create a cavity. Another advantage is that it gives limit theorems with total variation error bounds, although the bounds can be suboptimal. A surprising byproduct of our analysis is a relatively transparent explanation of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer system of equations. Along the way, we develop Stein's method for mixtures of two Gaussian densities.
We derive the thermodynamic limit of the empirical correlation and response functions in the Langevin dynamics for spherical mixed $p$-spin disordered mean-field models, starting uniformly within one of the spherical bands on which the Gibbs measure concentrates at low temperature for the pure $p$-spin models and mixed perturbations of them. We further relate the large time asymptotics of the resulting coupled non-linear integro-differential equations, to the geometric structure of the Gibbs measures (at low temperature), and derive their FDT solution (at high temperature).
We study the Gibbs measure of mixed spherical $p$-spin glass models at low temperature, in (part of) the 1-RSB regime, including, in particular, models close to pure in an appropriate sense. We show that the Gibbs measure concentrates on spherical bands around deep critical points of the (extended) Hamiltonian restricted to the sphere of radius $\sqrt N q_\star$, where $q_\star^2$ is the rightmost point in the support of the overlap distribution. We also show that the relevant critical points are pairwise orthogonal for two different low temperatures. This allows us to explain why temperature …
This note is concerned with the so-called superconcentration phenomenon. It shows that the Bakry-Emery's Gamma calculus can provide relevant bound on the variance of function satisfying a inverse, integrated, curvature criterion. As an illustration, we present some variance bounds for the Free Energy in different models from Spin Glasses Theory.
We study the high-temperature regime of a mean-field spin glass model whose couplings matrix is orthogonally invariant in law. The magnetization of this model is conjectured to satisfy a system of TAP equations, originally derived by Parisi and Potters using a diagrammatic expansion of the Gibbs free energy. We prove that this TAP description is correct in an $L^2$ sense, in a regime of sufficiently high temperature. Our approach develops a novel geometric argument for proving the convergence of an Approximate Message Passing (AMP) algorithm to the magnetization vector, which is applicable in …
Random Overlap Structures (ROSt's) are random elements on the space of probability measures on the unit ball of a Hilbert space, where two measures are identified if they differ by an isometry. In spin glasses, they arise as natural limits of Gibbs measures under the appropriate algebra of functions. We prove that the so called `cavity mapping' on the space of ROSt's is continuous, leading to a proof of the stochastic stability conjecture for the limiting Gibbs measures of a large class of spin glass models. Similar arguments yield the proofs of a number of other properties of ROSt's that may …
In this note we prove a correlation inequality for local variables of a Gibbs field based on the connectivity by active hyperbonds in a random cluster representation of the non overlap configuration distribution of two independent copies of the field. As a consequence, we show that absence of Machta-Newman-Stein blue bonds percolation implies uniqueness of Gibbs distribution in EA Spin Glasses. In dimension two this could constitute a step towards a proof that the critical temperature is zero.
In this work we consider a problem related to the equilibrium statistical mechanics of spin glasses, namely the study of the Gibbs measure of the random energy model. For solving this problem, new results of independent interest on sums of spacings for i.i.d. Gaussian random variables are presented. Then we give a precise description of the support of the Gibbs measure below the critical temperature.
We show that mixing for local, reversible dynamics of mean field spin glasses is exponentially slow in the low temperature regime. We introduce a notion of free energy barriers for the overlap, and prove that their existence imply that the spectral gap is exponentially small, and thus that mixing is exponentially slow. We then exhibit sufficient conditions on the equilibrium Gibbs measure which guarantee the existence of these barriers, using the notion of replicon eigenvalue and 2D Guerra Talagrand bounds. We show how these sufficient conditions cover large classes of Ising spin models for re…
We discuss a spin glass reminiscent of the Random Energy Model, which allows in particular to recast the Parisi minimization into a more classical Gibbs variational principle, thereby shedding some light on the physical meaning of the order parameter of the Parisi theory. As an application, we study the impact of an extensive cavity field on Derrida's REM: Despite its simplicity, this model displays some interesting features such as ultrametricity and chaos in temperature.
Properties of Random Overlap Structures (ROSt)'s constructed from the Edwards-Anderson (EA) Spin Glass model on $\Z^d$ with periodic boundary conditions are studied. ROSt's are $\N\times\N$ random matrices whose entries are the overlaps of spin configurations sampled from the Gibbs measure. Since the ROSt construction is the same for mean-field models (like the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model) as for short-range ones (like the EA model), the setup is a good common ground to study the effect of dimensionality on the properties of the Gibbs measure. In this spirit, it is shown, using translation i…
The concept of metastate measures on the states of a random spin system was introduced to be able to treat the large-volume asymptotics for complex quenched random systems, like spin glasses, which may exhibit chaotic volume dependence in the strong-coupling regime. We consider the general issue of the extremal decomposition for Gibbsian specifications which depend measurably on a parameter that may describe a whole random environment in the infinite volume. Given a random Gibbs measure, as a measurable map from the environment space, we prove measurability of its decomposition measure on pure…
Disordered systems such as spin glasses have been used extensively as models for high-dimensional random landscapes and studied from the perspective of optimization algorithms. In a recent paper by L. Addario-Berry and the second author, the continuous random energy model (CREM) was proposed as a simple toy model to study the efficiency of such algorithms. The following question was raised in that paper: what is the threshold $β_G$, at which sampling (approximately) from the Gibbs measure at inverse temperature $β$ becomes algorithmically hard? This paper is a first step towards answering this…
We prove a large deviation principle for a sequence of point processes defined by Gibbs probability measures on a Polish space. This is obtained as a consequence of a more general Laplace principle for the non-normalized Gibbs measures. We consider three main applications: Conditional Gibbs measures on compact spaces, Coulomb gases on compact Riemannian manifolds and the usual Gibbs measures in the Euclidean space. Finally, we study the generalization of Fekete points and prove a deterministic version of the Laplace principle known as $Γ$-convergence. The approach is partly inspired by the wor…
We study the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer (TAP) equations for spin glasses on the hypercube. First, using a random, approximately ultrametric decomposition of the hypercube, we decompose the Gibbs measure, $\langle\cdot\rangle_N$, into a mixture of conditional laws, $\langle\cdot\rangle_{α,N}$. We show that the TAP equations hold for the spin at any site with respect to $\langle\cdot\rangle_{α,N}$ simultaneously for all $α$. This result holds for generic models provided that the Parisi measure of the model has a jump at the top of its support.
We pursue two goals in this article. As our first goal, we construct a family $\mathcal{M}_G$ of Gibbs like measures on the set of piecewise linear convex functions $g:\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}$. It turns out that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the gradient of such convex functions and $\textit{Laguerre tessellations}$. Each cell in a Laguerre tessellation is a convex polygon that is marked by a vector $ρ\in\mathbb{R}^2$. Each measure $ν^f\in\mathcal{M}_G$ in our family is uniquely characterized by a kernel $f(x,ρ^-,ρ^+)$, which represents the rate at which a line separating two …
Let $μ$ be the geometric realization on $[0,1]$ of a Gibbs measure on $Σ=\{0,1\}^{\mathbb{N}}$ associated with a Hölder potential. The thermodynamic and multifractal properties of $μ$ are well known to be linked via the multifractal formalism. In this article, the impact of a random sampling procedure on this structure is studied. More precisely, let $\{I_w\}_{w\in Σ^*}$ stand for the collection of dyadic subintervals of $[0,1]$ naturally indexed by the set of finite dyadic words $Σ^*$. Fix $η\in(0,1)$, and a sequence $(p_w)_{w\in Σ^*}$ of independent Bernoulli variables of parameters $2^{-|w|…
We consider a spin system obtained by coupling two distinct Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) models with the same temperature and external field whose Hamiltonians are correlated. The disorder chaos conjecture for the SK model states that the overlap under the corresponding Gibbs measure is essentially concentrated at a single value. In the absence of external field, this statement was first confirmed by Chatterjee [Disorder chaos and multiple valleys in spin glasses (2009) Preprint]. In the present paper, using Guerra's replica symmetry breaking bound, we prove that the SK model is also chaotic i…
