We prove an equidistribution result for small subvarieties of an abelian variety which generalizes the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang theorem on equidistribution of small points.
A strongly special subvariety of a Shimura variety $S$ is (essentially) a subvariety associated to a semi-simple sub-Shimura datum. We prove that the set of probability measures canonically associated to to strongly special subvarieties is compact. More precisely: If $μ_n$ is a sequence of such probability measures associated to strongly special subvarieties $Z_n$ of $S$ there exists a subsequence $μ_{n_k}$ which converge to a measure $μ_Z$ canonically associated to a strongly special subvariety $Z$ and for all $k>>0$ $Z_{n_k}$ is contained in $Z$. We give some application to the Andre-Oort co…
In this paper, we prove the bounded case of the Andre-Oort conjecture for special subvarieties in a mixed Shimura variety. This generalizes previous results of L. Clozel, E. Ullmo, and A. Yafaev. The proof is reduced to a special case of the equidistribution conjecture for mixed Shimura varieties. The main tool is a theorem of S. Mozes and N. Shah for certain measures on lattice spaces.
In this paper, we prove a lower bound for the Galois orbits of a pure special subvariety in a general mixed Shimura variety. For special subvarieties that are not pure, we propose the notion of test invariants as a substitute for the lower bound estimation, and prove the bounded equidistribution for sequences of special subvarieties with uniformly bounded test invariants in a given mixed Shimura variety. Both the estimation and the bounded equidistribution rely on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for CM fields, similar to the pure case treated by E. Ullmo and A. Yafaev as part of the ergodic…
In this paper, the equidistribution theorem of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang about sequences of small points in an abelian variety is extended to the case of sequences of higher dimensional subvarieties. A quantitative version of this result is also given.
In this article, we introduce the notion of global adelic space of an arithmetic variety over an adelic curve and prove an equidistribution theorem for a generic sequence of subvarieties. As an application, we prove a Bogomolov type theorem for Abelian varieties over an adelic curve of characteristic 0.
In this paper we prove the equidistribution of $\Cbf$-special subvarieties in certain Kuga varieties, which implies a special case of the general André-Oort conjecture formulated for mixed Shimura varieties proposed by R.Pink. The main idea is to reduce the equidistribution to a theorem of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang on small points of abelian varieties and a theorem on the equiditribution of $C$-special subvarieties of Kuga varieties of rigid type treated by the author in a previous paper.
In this paper we develop a strategy and some technical tools for proving the Andre-Oort conjecture. We give lower bounds for the degrees of Galois orbits of geometric components of special subvarieties of Shimura varieties, assuming the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis. We proceed to show that sequences of special subvarieties whose Galois orbits have bounded degrees are equidistributed in a suitable sense.
A characterization of subvarieties of Shimura varieties which contain a Zariski dense subset of weakly special subvarieties has been proved by the second author, by combining o-minimality results and functional transcendence results. In this paper, we obtain a new proof of this statement by dynamics techniques on homogeneous spaces in the spirit of the earlier work of Clozel and the second author. The proof combines ergodic theory à la Ratner, with a statement on the dimension of a Hausdorff limit of a sequence of definable subsets (in an o-minimal theory) extracted from a definable family. On…
We prove equidistribution of a generic net of small points in a projective variety X over a function field K. For an algebraic dynamical system over K, we generalize this equidistribution theorem to a small generic net of subvarieties. For number fields, these results were proved by Yuan and we transfer here his methods to function fields. If X is a closed subvariety of an abelian variety, then we can describe the equidistribution measure explicitly in terms of convex geometry.
We give a uniform bound on the degree of the maximal torsion cosets for subvarieties of an abelian variety. The proof combines algebraic interpolation and a theorem of Serre on homotheties in the Galois representation associated to the torsion subgroup of an abelian variety.
For a projective variety X defined over a field K, there is a special class of self-morphisms of X called algebraic dynamical systems. In this paper we take K to be the function field of a smooth curve and prove that at each place of K, subvarieties of X of dynamically small height are equidistributed on the associated Berkovich analytic space. We carefully develop all of the arithmetic intersection theory needed to state and prove this theorem, and we present several applications on the non-Zariski density of preperiodic points and of points of small height in field extensions of bounded degr…
We prove a non-archimedean analogue of the fact that a closed subvariety of a semi-abelian variety is hyperbolic modulo its special locus, and thereby generalize a result of Cherry.
We prove that for a large class of subvarieties of abelian varieties over global function fields, the Brauer-Manin condition on adelic points cuts out exactly the rational points. This result is obtained from more general results concerning the intersection of the adelic points of a subvariety with the adelic closure of the group of rational points of the abelian variety.
This paper is the sequel of our paper "Arithmetic height functions over finitely generated fields" (cf. math.NT/9809016). In this paper, we define the canonical height of subvarieties of an abelian variety over a finitely generated field over Q. We also prove that the canonical height of a subvariety is zero if and only if it is a translation of an abelian subvariety by a torsion point.
In this paper we prove the equidistribution of certain families of special subvarieties in Kuga varieties, which is a special case of the general Andre-Oort conjecture formulated for mixed Shimura varieties proposed by R.Pink. Our approach is parallel to the pure case treated in the works of L.Clozel, E.Ullmo, and A.Yafaev using tools from ergodic theory.
In this paper we prove the equidistribution of bounded sequences of special subvarieties in a general mixed Shimura varieties, a notion adapted from the pure case treated by Clozel, Ullmo, and Yafaev in the study of the Andre-Oort conjecture. We also discuss the relation of bounded sequences with bounded Galois orbits of special subvarieties.
In this article, we prove that the Zilber-Pink conjecture for abelian varieties over an arbitrary field of characteristic $0$ is implied by the same statement for abelian varieties over the algebraic numbers. More precisely, the conjecture holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the abelian variety $A$ if it holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the largest abelian subvariety of $A$ that is isomorphic to an abelian variety defined over $\bar{ \mathbb{Q}}$.
In this paper we study the field of definition of abelian subvarieties $B\subset A_{\overline{K}}$ for an abelian variety $A$ over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. We show that, provided that no isotypic component of $A_{\overline{K}}$ is simple, there are infinitely many abelian subvarieties of $A_{\overline{K}}$ with field of definition $K_A$, the field of definition of the endomorphisms of $A_{\overline{K}}$. This result combined with earlier work of Rémond gives an explicit maximum for the minimal degree of a field extension over which an abelian subvariety of $A_{\overline{K}}$ is defin…
This paper proves a finiteness result for families of integral points on a semiabelian variety minus a divisor, generalizing the corresponding result of Faltings for abelian varieties. Combined with the main theorem of the first part of this paper, this gives a finiteness statement for integral points on a closed subvariety of a semiabelian variety, minus a divisor. In addition, the last two sections generalize some standard results on closed subvarieties of semiabelian varieties to the context of closed subvarieties minus divisors.
For a semi-abelian variety over a global function field which is isogenous to an isotrivial one, we show that on the product of local points of a subvariety satisfying a minor condition, the topological closure of a finitely generated subgroup of %the group of its global points cuts out exactly the global points of the subvariety lying in this subgroup. As a corollary, on every non-isotrivial super-singular curve of genus two over a global function field, we conclude that the Brauer-Manin condition cuts out exactly the set of its rational points.
We deduce an analogue of the Bogomolov conjecture for non-degenerate subvarieties in fibered products of families of elliptic curves from the author's recent theorem on equidistribution in families of abelian varieties. This generalizes results of DeMarco and Mavraki and improves certain results of Manin-Mumford type proven by Masser and Zannier to results of Bogomolov type, yielding the first results of this type for subvarieties of relative dimension $>1$ in families of abelian varieties with trivial trace.
The proof by Ullmo and Zhang of Bogomolov's conjecture about points of small height in abelian varieties made a crucial use of an equidistribution property for ``small points'' in the associated complex abelian variety. We study the analogous equidistribution property at $p$-adic places. Our results can be conveniently stated within the framework of the analytic spaces defined by Berkovich. The first one is valid in any dimension but is restricted to ``algebraic metrics'', the second one is valid for curves, but allows for more general metrics, in particular to the normalized heights with resp…
We show that for a variety which admits a quasi-finite period map, finiteness (resp.~non-Zariski-density) of $S$-integral points implies finiteness (resp.~non-Zariski-density) of points over all $\mathbb{Z}$-finitely generated integral domains of characteristic zero. Our proofs rely on foundational results in Hodge theory due to Deligne, Griffiths, and Schmid, and Bakker-Brunebarbe-Tsimerman. We give straightforward applications to Shimura varieties, locally symmetric varieties, the moduli space of smooth hypersurfaces in projective space, and the moduli of smooth divisors in an abelian variet…
We prove the Bogomolov conjecture for an abelian variety A over a function field which is totally degenerate at a place v. We adapt Zhang's proof of the number field case replacing the complex analytic tools by tropical analytic geometry. A key step is the tropical equidistribution theorem for A at the totally degenerate place. As an application, we obtain finiteness of torsion points with coordinates in the maximal unramified algebraic extension over v.
We give a new lower bound for the essential minimum of subvarieties of abelian varieties with small codimension, under a conjecture about ordinary primes in abelian varieties. This lower bound is already known in the toric case since the work of Amoroso and David. It is the best expected, "up to an epsilon", in the degree of the subvariety.
For a closed d-dimensional subvariety X of an abelian variety A and a canonically metrized line bundle L on A, Chambert-Loir has introduced measures $c_1(L|_X)^{\wedge d}$ on the Berkovich analytic space associated to A with respect to the discrete valuation of the ground field. In this paper, we give an explicit description of these canonical measures in terms of convex geometry. We use a generalization of the tropicalization related to the Raynaud extension of A and Mumford's construction. The results have applications to the equidistribution of small points.
In this paper we prove a special case of the André-Oort conjecture for Kuga varieties. If $M$ is a Kuga variety fibred over a pure Shimura variety $S$ as an abelian scheme, and $(M_n)$ is a sequence of special subvarieties in $M$ which are faithfully flat over $S$, then the Zariski closure of the union of the $M_n$'s is a finite union of special subvarieties faithfully flat over $S$. The proof is reduced to a variant of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for abelian schemes.
Investigating a conjecture of Zannier, we study irreducible subvarieties of abelian schemes that dominate the base and contain a Zariski dense set of torsion points that lie on pairwise isogenous fibers. If everything is defined over the algebraic numbers and the abelian scheme has maximal variation, we prove that the geometric generic fiber of such a subvariety is a union of torsion cosets. We go on to prove fully or partially explicit versions of this result in fibered powers of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Finally, we apply a recent result of Galateau-Martínez to obtain uniform b…
A subvariety V of an abelian variety is `translate' if it is the union of translates of proper algebraic subgroups. An irreducible V is `transverse' if it is not contained in any translate variety. Effective sharp lower bounds for a transverse subvarieties of a power of an elliptic curve E are known. Here, we prove a sharp lower bound for the essential minimum of non-translate subvarieties of such a power E^g.
The Torsion Anomalous Conjecture (TAC) states that a subvariety V of an abelian variety A has only finitely many maximal torsion anomalous subvarieties. In this work we prove, with an effective method, some cases of the TAC when the ambient variety A has CM, generalising our previous results in products of CM elliptic curves. When V is a curve, we give new results and we deduce some implications on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture.
Consider a quartic $q$-Weil polynomial $f$. Motivated by equidistribution considerations we define, for each prime $\ell$, a local factor which measures the relative frequency with which $f\bmod \ell$ occurs as the characteristic polynomial of a symplectic similitude over $\mathbb{F}_\ell$. For a certain class of polynomials, we show that the resulting infinite product calculates the number of principally polarized abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with Weil polynomial $f$.
We prove a $p$-adic analogue of the André-Oort conjecture for subvarieties of the universal abelian varieties containing a dense set of special points. Let $g$ and $n$ be integers with $n \geq 3$ and $p$ a prime number not dividing $n$. Let $R$ be a finite extension of $W[{\mathbb F}_p^{\mathrm alg}]$, the ring of Witt vectors of the algebraic closure of the field of $p$ elements. The moduli space $\cA = \cA_{g,1,n}$ of $g$-dimensional principally polarized abelian varieties with full level $n$-structure as well as the universal abelian variety $π:\cX \to \cA$ over $\cA$ may be defined over $R…
Abelian covers of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds are ubiquitous. We prove the local mixing theorem of the frame flow for abelian covers of closed hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. We obtain a classification theorem for measures invariant under the horospherical subgroup. We also describe applications to the prime geodesic theorem as well as to other counting and equidistribution problems. Our results are proved for any abelian cover of a homogeneous space $Γ_0\backslash G$ where $G$ is a rank one simple Lie group and $Γ_0<G$ is a convex cocompact Zariski dense subgroup.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$, the number of torsion points rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$. We formulate a question suggesting the optimal exponent for this bound in terms of the dimension of the Mumford-Tate groups of the abelian subvarieties of $A$; we study the behaviour under product and then give a positive answer to our question when $A$ is the product of elliptic curves.
This work is the third part of a series of papers. In the first two we consider curves and varieties in a power of an elliptic curve. Here we deal with subvarieties of an abelian variety in general. Let V be an irreducible variety of dimension d embedded in an abelian variety A, both defined over the algebraic numbers. We say that V is weak-transverse if V is not contained in any proper algebraic subgroup of A, and transverse if it is not contained in any translate of such a subgroup. Assume a conjectural lower bound for the normalized height of V. For V transverse, we prove that the algebraic…
