In this article, we prove that the Zilber-Pink conjecture for abelian varieties over an arbitrary field of characteristic $0$ is implied by the same statement for abelian varieties over the algebraic numbers.
More precisely, the conjecture holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the abelian variety $A$ if it holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the largest abelian subvariety of $A$ that is isomorphic to an abelian variety defined over $\bar{ \mathbb{Q}}$.
Using our recent results on the algebraicity of the Hodge locus for variations of Hodge structures of level at least $3$, we improve the results of Lawrence-Venkatesh in direction of the refined Bombieri-Lang conjecture.
We prove the Zilber--Pink conjecture for curves in $Y(1)^n$ whose Zariski closure in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ passes through the point $(\infty, \ldots, \infty)$, going beyond the asymmetry condition of Habegger and Pila. Our proof is based on a height bound following André's G-functions method. The principal novelty is that we exploit relations between evaluations of G-functions at unboundedly many non-archimedean places.
In unpublished notes Pila proposed a Modular Zilber-Pink with Derivatives (MZPD) conjecture, which is a Zilber-Pink type statement for the modular $j$-function and its derivatives. In this article we define D-special varieties, then state and prove two functional (differential) analogues of the MZPD conjecture for those varieties. In particular, we prove a weak version of MZPD. As a special case of our results, we obtain a functional Modular André-Oort with Derivatives statement. The main tools used in the paper come from (model theoretic) differential algebra and complex analytic geometry, an…
We prove function field versions of the Zilber-Pink conjectures for varieties supporting a variation of Hodge structures. A form of these results for Shimura varieties in the context of unlikely intersections is the following. Let $S$ be a connected pure Shimura variety with a fixed quasiprojective embedding. We show that there is an explicitly computable function $B$ of two natural number arguments so that for any field extension $K$ of the complex numbers and Hodge generic irreducible proper subvariety $X \subsetneq S_K$, the set of nonconstant points in the intersection of $X$ with the unio…
We prove some cases of the Zilber-Pink conjecture on unlikely intersections in Shimura varieties. Firstly, we prove that the Zilber-Pink conjecture holds for intersections between a curve and the union of the Hecke translates of a fixed special subvariety, conditional on arithmetic conjectures. Secondly, we prove the conjecture unconditionally for intersections between a curve and the union of Hecke correspondences on the moduli space of principally polarised abelian varieties, subject to some technical hypotheses. This generalises results of Habegger and Pila on the Zilber-Pink conjecture for…
Let Z be a subvariety of the moduli space of principally polarised abelian varieties of dimension g over the complex numbers. Suppose that Z contains a Zariski dense set of points which correspond to abelian varieties from a single isogeny class. A generalisation of a conjecture of André and Pink predicts that Z is a weakly special subvariety. We prove this when dim Z = 1 using the Pila--Zannier method and the Masser--Wüstholz isogeny theorem. This generalises results of Edixhoven and Yafaev when the Hecke orbit consists of CM points and of Pink when it consists of Galois generic points.
Let $E_λ$ be the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Given $n$ linearly independent points $P_1,\dots , P_n \in E_λ\left(\overline{\mathbb{Q}(λ)}\right)$ we prove that there are at most finitely many complex numbers $λ_0$ such that $E_{λ_0} $ has complex multiplication and $P_1(λ_0), \dots ,P_n(λ_0)$ are dependent over $End(E_{λ_0})$. This implies a positive answer to a question of Bertrand and, combined with a previous work in collaboration with Capuano, proves the Zilber-Pink conjecture for a curve in a fibered power of an elliptic scheme when everything is defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}…
In this paper we show how some known weak forms of the Zilber--Pink conjecture can be strengthened by combining them with the Mordell--Lang conjecture or its variants. We illustrate this idea by proving some theorems on atypical intersections in the semiabelian and modular settings. Given a "finitely generated" set $Γ$ with a certain structure, we consider $Γ$-special subvarieties -- weakly special subvarieties containing a point of $Γ$ -- and show that every variety $V$ contains only finitely many maximal $Γ$-atypical subvarieties, i.e. atypical intersections of $V$ with $Γ$-special varieties…
For several Hodge-type Shimura varieties of good reduction in characteristic $p$, we show that the cone of weights of automorphic forms is encoded by the stack of $G$-zips of Pink-Wedhorn-Ziegler. This establishes several instances of a general conjecture formulated in previous papers by the authors. Furthermore, we prove in these cases that any mod $p$ automorphic form whose weight lies in a specific region of the weight space is divisible by a partial Hasse invariant. This generalizes to other Shimura varieties previous results of Diamond--Kassaei on Hilbert modular forms.
In 1997 Richard Pink has clarified the concept of Hodge structures over function fields in positive characteristic, which today are called Hodge-Pink structures. They form a neutral Tannakian category over the underlying function field. He has defined Hodge realization functors from the uniformizable abelian $t$-modules and $t$-motives of Greg Anderson to Hodge-Pink structures. This allows one to associate with each uniformizable $t$-motive a Hodge-Pink group, analogous to the Mumford-Tate group of a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers. It further enabled Pink to prove the analo…
We consider the structures formed by isogenies of abelian varieties with polarizations that are not necessarily principal, specifically with the $[\ell]$-polarizations we have previously defined. Our primary interest is in superspecial abelian varieties, where the isogenies are related to quaternionic hermitian forms. We first consider isogeny graphs. We show that these $[\ell]$-isogeny graphs are a generalized Brandt graph and construct them entirely in terms of definite quaternion algebras. We prove that they are connected and give examples to show that the regular graphs obtained are someti…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. The number of torsion points that are rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$ of $L$ over $K$. Under the following three conditions, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound, in terms of the dimension of abelian subvarieties and their endomorphism rings. The three hypothesis are the following: $(1)$ $A$ is geometrically isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I, II or III, according to the Albert classification; $(2)$ $A$ is of "Lefschetz type", that is, t…
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K, the number of torsion points rational over a finite extension L is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree [L : K]. When A is isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I or II in Albert classification and is "fully of Lefschetz type", i.e. whose Mumford-Tate group is the group of symplectic similitudes commuting with endomorphisms and which satisfy the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound in terms of the dimensions of the abelian subvarieties of A and their rings of endomorphisms.…
