We establish Large Galois orbits conjectures for points of unlikely intersections of curves in $Y(1)^n$, upon assumptions on the intersection of such curves with the boundary $X(1)^n\backslash Y(1)^n$, in the Zilber-Pink setting. As a corollary, building on work of Habegger-Pila and Daw-Orr, we obtain new cases of the Zilber-Pink conjecture for curves in $Y(1)^n$.
Using our recent results on the algebraicity of the Hodge locus for variations of Hodge structures of level at least $3$, we improve the results of Lawrence-Venkatesh in direction of the refined Bombieri-Lang conjecture.
In this article, we prove that the Zilber-Pink conjecture for abelian varieties over an arbitrary field of characteristic $0$ is implied by the same statement for abelian varieties over the algebraic numbers. More precisely, the conjecture holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the abelian variety $A$ if it holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the largest abelian subvariety of $A$ that is isomorphic to an abelian variety defined over $\bar{ \mathbb{Q}}$.
We prove the Zilber--Pink conjecture for curves in $Y(1)^n$ whose Zariski closure in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ passes through the point $(\infty, \ldots, \infty)$, going beyond the asymmetry condition of Habegger and Pila. Our proof is based on a height bound following André's G-functions method. The principal novelty is that we exploit relations between evaluations of G-functions at unboundedly many non-archimedean places.
In unpublished notes Pila proposed a Modular Zilber-Pink with Derivatives (MZPD) conjecture, which is a Zilber-Pink type statement for the modular $j$-function and its derivatives. In this article we define D-special varieties, then state and prove two functional (differential) analogues of the MZPD conjecture for those varieties. In particular, we prove a weak version of MZPD. As a special case of our results, we obtain a functional Modular André-Oort with Derivatives statement. The main tools used in the paper come from (model theoretic) differential algebra and complex analytic geometry, an…
We prove function field versions of the Zilber-Pink conjectures for varieties supporting a variation of Hodge structures. A form of these results for Shimura varieties in the context of unlikely intersections is the following. Let $S$ be a connected pure Shimura variety with a fixed quasiprojective embedding. We show that there is an explicitly computable function $B$ of two natural number arguments so that for any field extension $K$ of the complex numbers and Hodge generic irreducible proper subvariety $X \subsetneq S_K$, the set of nonconstant points in the intersection of $X$ with the unio…
The André-Pink-Zannier conjecture concerns the intersection of subvarieties and the generalized Hecke orbit of a given point in mixed Shimura varieties. It is part of the Zilber-Pink conjecture. In this paper we focus on the universal family of principally polarized abelian varieties. We explain the moduli interpretation of the conjecture in this case and prove several different cases for this conjecture: its overlap with the André-Oort conjecture; when the subvariety is contained in an abelian scheme over a curve and the point is a torsion point on its fiber; when the subvariety is a curve.
We prove some cases of the Zilber-Pink conjecture on unlikely intersections in Shimura varieties. Firstly, we prove that the Zilber-Pink conjecture holds for intersections between a curve and the union of the Hecke translates of a fixed special subvariety, conditional on arithmetic conjectures. Secondly, we prove the conjecture unconditionally for intersections between a curve and the union of Hecke correspondences on the moduli space of principally polarised abelian varieties, subject to some technical hypotheses. This generalises results of Habegger and Pila on the Zilber-Pink conjecture for…
We show that the strategy of point counting in o-minimal structures can be applied to various problems on unlikely intersections that go beyond the conjectures of Manin-Mumford and André-Oort. We verify the so-called Zilber-Pink Conjecture in a product of modular curves on assuming a lower bound for Galois orbits and a sufficiently strong modular Ax-Schanuel Conjecture. In the context of abelian varieties we obtain the Zilber-Pink Conjecture for curves unconditionally when everything is defined over a number field. For higher dimensional subvarieties of abelian varieties we obtain some weaker …
Let C be an algebraic curve in a power of an elliptic curve, both defined over the algebraic numbers. We show that the set of algebraic points of C which satisfy certain conditions is a finite set. This result has implications with the Pink-Zilber Conjeture and the Mordel-Lang plus Bogomolov Theorem for curves.
Let $G$ be a semiabelian variety and $C$ a curve in $G$ that is not contained in a proper algebraic subgroup of $G$. In this situation, conjectures of Pink and Zilber imply that there are at most finitely many points contained in the so-called unlikely intersections of $C$ with subgroups of codimension at least $2$. In this note, we establish this assertion for general semiabelian varieties over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. This extends results of Maurin and Bombieri, Habegger, Masser, and Zannier in the toric case as well as Habegger and Pila in the abelian case.
In this paper we show how some known weak forms of the Zilber--Pink conjecture can be strengthened by combining them with the Mordell--Lang conjecture or its variants. We illustrate this idea by proving some theorems on atypical intersections in the semiabelian and modular settings. Given a "finitely generated" set $Γ$ with a certain structure, we consider $Γ$-special subvarieties -- weakly special subvarieties containing a point of $Γ$ -- and show that every variety $V$ contains only finitely many maximal $Γ$-atypical subvarieties, i.e. atypical intersections of $V$ with $Γ$-special varieties…
Given a correspondence between a modular curve $S$ and an elliptic curve $A$, we prove that the intersection of any finite-rank subgroup of $A$ with the set of points on $A$ corresponding to an isogeny class on $S$ is finite. The question was proposed by A. Buium and B. Poonen in 2009. We follow the strategy proposed by the authors, using a result about the equidistribution of Hecke points on Shimura varieties and Serre's open image theorem. The result is an instance of the Zilber-Pink conjecture.
We prove that the moduli space of compact genus three Riemann surfaces contains only finitely many algebraically primitive Teichmueller curves. For the stratum consisting of holomorphic one-forms in genus three with a single zero, our approach to finiteness uses the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the Hodge bundle over a Teichmueller curve to obtain new information on the locations of the zeros of eigenforms. By passing to the boundary of moduli space, this gives explicit constraints on the cusps of Teichmueller curves in terms of cross-ratios of six points on a projective line. These constrai…
We consider a family, depending on a parameter, of multiplicative extensions of an elliptic curve with complex multiplications. They form a 3-dimensional variety $G$ which admits a dense set of special curves, known as Ribet curves, which strictly contains the torsion curves. We show that an irreducible curve $W$ in $G$ meets this set Zariski-densely only if $W$ lies in a fiber of the family or is a translate of a Ribet curve by a multiplicative section. We further deduce from this result a proof of the Zilber-Pink conjecture (over number fields) for the mixed Shimura variety attached to the t…
The Zilber-Pink conjecture predicts that an algebraic curve in $\mathcal{A}_2$ has only finitely many intersections with the special curves, unless it is contained in a proper special subvariety. Under a large Galois orbits hypothesis, we prove the finiteness of the intersection with the special curves parametrising abelian surfaces isogenous to the product of two elliptic curves, at least one of which has complex multiplication. Furthermore, we show that this large Galois orbits hypothesis holds for curves satisfying a condition on their intersection with the boundary of the Baily-Borel compa…
We prove a special case of the following conjecture of Zilber-Pink generalising the Manin-Mumford conjecture : let $X$ be a curve inside an Abelian variety $A$ over $\bar{\Q}$, provided $X$ is not contained in a torsion subvariety, the intersection of $X$ with the union of all subgroup schemes of codimension at least 2 is finite ; we settle the case where $A$ is a power of a simple Abelian variety of C.M. type. This generalises the previous known result, due to Viada and Rémond-Viada (who was able to prove the conjecture for power of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication). The proof is…
