We prove a $p$-adic analogue of the André-Oort conjecture for subvarieties of the universal abelian varieties containing a dense set of special points. Let $g$ and $n$ be integers with $n \geq 3$ and $p$ a prime number not dividing $n$. Let $R$ be a finite extension of $W[{\mathbb F}_p^{\mathrm alg}]$, the ring of Witt vectors of the algebraic closure of the field of $p$ elements. The moduli space $\cA = \cA_{g,1,n}$ of $g$-dimensional principally polarized abelian varieties with full level $n$-structure as well as the universal abelian variety $π:\cX \to \cA$ over $\cA$ may be defined over $R$. We call a point $ξ\in \cX(R)$ \emph{$R$-special} if $\cX_{π(ξ)}$ is a canonical lift and $ξ$ is a torsion point of its fibre. We show that an irreducible subvariety of $\cX_R$ containing a dense set of $p$-special points must be a special subvariety in the sense of mixed Shimura varieties. Our proof employs the model theory of difference fields.
Let $X\subset Y(1)^n$ be a subvariety defined over a number field $\mathbb F$ and let $(P_1,\ldots,P_n)\in X$ be a special point not contained in a positive-dimensional special subvariety of $X$. We show that the if a coordinate $P_i$ corresponds to an order not contained in a single exceptional Siegel-Tatuzawa imaginary quadratic field $K_*$ then the associated discriminant $|Δ(P_i)|$ is bounded by an effective constant depending only on $\operatorname{deg} X$ and $[{\mathbb F}:{\mathbb Q}]$. We derive analogous effective results for the positive-dimensional maximal special subvarieties. From…
We give a proof of the André-Oort conjecture for $\mathcal{A}_g$ - the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. In particular, we show that a recently proven `averaged' version of the Colmez conjecture yields lower bounds for Galois orbits of CM points. The André-Oort conjecture then follows from previous work of Pila and the author.
We prove in this paper the Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass theorem for all mixed Shimura varieties and discuss the lower bounds for Galois orbits of special points of mixed Shimura varieties. In particular we reprove a result of Silverberg in a different approach. Then combining these results we prove the André-Oort conjecture for any mixed Shimura variety whose pure part is a subvariety of A_6^n.
In the proofs of most cases of the André-Oort conjecture, there are two different steps whose effectivity is unclear: the use of generalizations of Brauer-Siegel and the use of Pila-Wilkie. Only the case of curves in ${\bf C}^2$ is currently known effectively (by other methods). We give an effective proof of André-Oort for non-compact curves in every Hilbert modular surface and every Hilbert modular variety of odd genus (under a minor generic simplicity condition). In particular we show that in these cases the first step may be replaced by the endomorphism estimates of Wüstholz and the second …
Let $Z=X_1\times...\times X_n$ be a product of Drinfeld modular curves. We characterize those algebraic subvarieties $X \subset Z$ containing a Zariski-dense set of CM points, i.e. points corresponding to $n$-tuples of Drinfeld modules with complex multiplication (and suitable level structure). This is a characteristic $p$ analogue of a special case of the André-Oort conjecture. We follow closely the approach used by Bas Edixhoven in characteristic zero, see math.NT/0302138. Note that in this paper we assume that the characteristic $p$ is odd, and we only treat the case of Drinfeld $F_q[T]$-mo…
We establish the equidistribution with respect to the bifurcation measure of post-critically finite maps in any one-dimensional algebraic family of unicritical polynomials. Using this equidistribution result, together with a combinatorial analysis of certain algebraic correspondences on the complement of the Mandelbrot set $M_2$ (or generalized Mandelbrot set $M_d$ for degree $d>2$), we classify all complex plane curves $C$ with Zariski-dense subsets of points $(a,b)\in C$, such that both $z^d+a$ and $z^d+b$ are simultaneously post-critically finite for a fixed degree $d\geq 2$. Our result is …
Using the theory of polarised flag type quotients, we determine mass formulae for all principally polarised supersingular abelian threefolds defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$. We combine these results with computations of the automorphism groups to study Oort's conjecture; we prove that every generic three-dimensional principally polarised supersingular abelian variety over $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2$ has automorphism group $\{ \pm 1 \}$.
A characterization of subvarieties of Shimura varieties which contain a Zariski dense subset of weakly special subvarieties has been proved by the second author, by combining o-minimality results and functional transcendence results. In this paper, we obtain a new proof of this statement by dynamics techniques on homogeneous spaces in the spirit of the earlier work of Clozel and the second author. The proof combines ergodic theory à la Ratner, with a statement on the dimension of a Hausdorff limit of a sequence of definable subsets (in an o-minimal theory) extracted from a definable family. On…
In the moduli space of degree d polynomials, the special subvarieties are those cut out by critical orbit relations, and then the special points are the post-critically finite polynomials. It was conjectured that in the moduli space of degree d polynomials, the subvarieties containing a Zariski-dense set of special points are exactly these special subvarieties. In this article, we prove the first non-trivial case for this conjecture: the case of cubic polynomials.
Let $\mathbb{V}$ be a polarized variation of integral Hodge structure on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$. In this paper, we show that the union of the non-factor special subvarieties for $(S, \mathbb{V})$, which are of Shimura type with dominant period maps, is a finite union of special subvarieties of $S$. This generalizes previous results of Clozel and Ullmo arXiv:math/0404131, Ullmo \cite{Ullmo07} on the distribution of the non-factor (in particular, strongly) special subvarieties in a Shimura variety to the non-classical setting and also answers positively the geometric part …
We prove the existence of an Abelian variety $A$ of dimension $g$ over $\Qa$ which is not isogenous to any Jacobian, subject to the necessary condition $g>3$. Recently, C.Chai and F.Oort gave such a proof assuming the André-Oort conjecture. We modify their proof by constructing a special sequence of CM points for which we can avoid any unproven hypotheses. We make use of various techniques from the recent work of Klingler-Yafaev et al.

We prove the conjecture of Oort that a compact subvariety of the moduli space of principally polarized Abelian varieties of genus g has codimension strictly greater than g, for g > 2, in characteristic zero
The André-Pink-Zannier conjecture concerns the intersection of subvarieties and the generalized Hecke orbit of a given point in mixed Shimura varieties. It is part of the Zilber-Pink conjecture. In this paper we focus on the universal family of principally polarized abelian varieties. We explain the moduli interpretation of the conjecture in this case and prove several different cases for this conjecture: its overlap with the André-Oort conjecture; when the subvariety is contained in an abelian scheme over a curve and the point is a torsion point on its fiber; when the subvariety is a curve.
We study the moduli space A_g of g-dimensional principally polarized abelian varieties in positive characteristic, and its variant A_I with Iwahori level structure. Both supersingular Ekedahl-Oort strata and supersingular Kottwitz-Rapoport strata are isomorphic to disjoint unions of Deligne-Lusztig varieties (see [Hoeve 2008] and [Goertz, Yu 2008], resp.). Here we compare these isomorphisms. We also give an explicit description of Kottwitz-Rapoport strata contained in the supersingular locus in the general parahoric case. Finally, we show that every Ekedahl-Oort stratum is isomorphic to a para…
Oort has conjectured that there do not exist Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of genus-$g$ curves when $g$ is large enough. In this paper we prove the Oort conjecture for Shimura curves of Mumford type and Shimura curves parameterizing principally polarized $g$-dimensional abelian varieties isogenous to $g$-fold self-products of elliptic curves for $g>11$. We also prove that there do not exist Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g>7$. As a consequence, we obtain a finiteness result regarding smooth genus-$g$ curve…
We study the Ekedahl-Oort stratification for good reductions of Shimura varieties of PEL type. These generalize the Ekedahl-Oort strata defined and studied by Oort for the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties (the "Siegel case"). They are parameterized by certain elements w in the Weyl group of the reductive group of the Shimura datum. We show that for every such w the corresponding Ekedahl-Oort stratum is smooth, quasi-affine, and of dimension l(w) (and in particular non-empty). Some of these results have previously been obtained by Moonen, Vasiu, and the second author usin…
For a Shimura variety of Hodge type with hyperspecial level structure at a prime $p$, Vasiu and Kisin constructed a smooth integral model (namely the integral canonical model) uniquely determined by a certain extension property. We define and study the Ekedahl-Oort stratifications on the special fibers of those integral canonical models when $p>2$. This generalizes Ekedahl-Oort stratifications defined and studied by Oort on moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties and those defined and studied by Moonen, Wedhorn and Viehmann on good reductions of Shimura varieties of PEL type. …
The goal of this paper is to study a $p$-adic analog of the joint of the conjectures of André--Oort and André--Pink. More precisely, on a product of ordinary Siegel formal moduli schemes, we study the distribution of points whose components are either CM points or points in Hecke orbits. We use linearity of formal subschemes of the product as the $p$-adic analog of geodesicness over complex numbers. Moreover, we relax the usual incidence relations by using $p$-adic distance. We also study a $p$-adic formal scheme theoretic analog of the Ax--Lindemann theorem.
In this paper a number of results on cycles on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties is presented. Results include a determination of the tautological ring, bounds on the order of torsion of the top Chern class $λ_g$ and a determination of the cycle classes of the Ekedahl-Oort stratification in characteristic $p$. It includes as special cases formulas for the classes of loci like the $p$-rank $\leq f$ locus or the $a$-number $\geq a$-locus. The results on the tautological ring are my own work, the results on the torsion of $λ_g$ and on the cycle classes of the Ekedahl-Oor…
We study the moduli space of abelian threefolds with Iwahori level structure in positive characteristic. We explicitly determine the fibers of the canonical projection to the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties and draw conclusions about the relationship between the Ekedahl-Oort, the Kottwitz-Rapoport and the Newton stratification on these spaces.
The Coleman-Oort conjecture says that for large $g$ there are no positive-dimensional Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$ generically contained in the Jacobian locus. Counterexamples are known for $g\leq 7$. They can all be constructed using families of Galois coverings of curves satisfying a numerical condition. These families are already classified in cases where: a) the Galois group is cyclic, b) it is abelian and the family is 1-dimensional, and c) $g\leq 9$. By means of carefully designed computations and theoretical arguments excluding a large number of cases we are able to prove that…
We prove, following Deligne and André, that the Hodge classes on abelian varieties of CM-type can be expressed in terms of divisor classes and split Weil classes, and we describe some consequences. In particular, we show that Grothendieck's standard conjecture of Lefschetz type implies the Hodge conjecture for abelian varieties (Abdulali, André, ...).
This paper is a summary of author's results on finite flat commutative group schemes. The properties of the generic fibre functor are discussed. A complete classification of finite local flat commutative group schemes over mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation rings in terms of their Cartier modules (defined by Oort) is given. We also state several properties of tangent space of these schemes. These results are applied to the study of reduction of Abelian varieties. A finite $p$-adic semistable reduction criterion is formulated. It looks especially nice in the ordinary reduction cas…
Let $X_1$ and $X_2$ be deformation equivalent projective hyperkähler manifolds. We prove that the André motive of $X_1$ is abelian if and only if the André motive of $X_2$ is abelian. Applying this to manifolds of $\mbox{K3}^{[n]}$, generalized Kummer and OG6 deformation types, we deduce that their André motives are abelian. As a consequence, we prove that all Hodge classes in arbitrary degree on such manifolds are absolute. We discuss applications to the Mumford-Tate conjecture, showing in particular that it holds for even degree cohomology of such manifolds.
Given a family of Galois coverings of the projective line we give a simple sufficient condition ensuring that the closure of the image of the family via the period mapping is a special (or Shimura) subvariety in A_g. By a computer program we get the list of all families in genus up to 8 satisfying our condition. There is no family in genus 8, all of them are in genus at most 7. These examples are related to a conjecture of Oort. Among them we get the cyclic examples constructed by various authors (Shimura, Mostow, De Jong-Noot, Rohde, Moonen and others) and the abelian non-cyclic examples foun…
A conjecture by Yves Andre and Frans Oort says that closed subvarieties of Shimura varieties that contain a Zariski dense subset of special points are subvarieties of Hodge type. We prove this in the case where the subvariety is a curve that contains infinitely many special points that lie in one Hecke orbit. Via work of Juergen Wolfart, Paula Cohen and Gisbert Wuestholz, this result has an application to algebraicity of values of hypergeometric functions.
We study local G-shtukas with level structure over a base scheme whose Newton polygons are constant on the base. We show that after a finite base change and after passing to an étale covering, such a local G-shtuka is isogenous to a completely slope divisible one, generalizing corresponding results for p-divisible groups by Oort and Zink. As an application we establish a product structure up to finite morphism on the closed Newton stratum of the universal deformation of a local G-shtuka, similarly to Oort's foliations for p-divisible groups and abelian varieties. This also yields bounds on the…
Let $Y$ be a subvariety contained in a smooth Mumford compactification of an orthogonal Shimura variety $M \subset A_g$, where $A_g$ is the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ with some level structure, such that $Y$ intersects the boundary of $A_g$ transversally. Then we give necessary and sufficient conditions of André-Oort type for $Y$ itself being the compactification of a special subvariety $Y^0 \subset M$
We study moduli spaces of abelian varieties in positive characteristic, more specifically the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties on the one hand, and the analogous space with Iwahori type level structure, on the other hand. We investigate the Ekedahl-Oort stratification on the former, the Kottwitz-Rapoport stratification on the latter, and their relationship. In this way, we obtain structural results about the supersingular locus in the case of Iwahori level structure, for instance a formula for its dimension in case $g$ is even.
In this paper we study the geometry of good reductions of Shimura varieties of abelian type. More precisely, we construct the Newton stratification, Ekedahl-Oort stratification, and central leaves on the special fiber of a Shimura variety of abelian type at a good prime. We establish several basic properties of these stratifications, including the non-emptiness, closure relation and dimension formula, generalizing those previously known in the PEL and Hodge type cases. We also study the relations between these stratifications, both in general and in some special cases, such as those of fully H…
We explore an analogue of the André-Oort conjecture for subvarieties of Drinfeld modular varieties. The conjecture states that a subvariety $X$ of a Drinfeld modular variety contains a Zariski-dense set of complex multiplication (CM) points if and only if $X$ is a "special" subvariety (i.e. $X$ is defined by requiring additional endomorphisms). We prove this conjecture in two cases. Firstly when $X$ contains a Zariski-dense set of CM points with a certain behaviour above a fixed prime (which is the case if these CM points lie in one Hecke orbit), and secondly when $X$ is a curve containing inf…
We present a heuristic argument based on Honda-Tate theory against many conjectures in `unlikely intersections' over the algebraic closure of a finite field; notably, we conjecture that every abelian variety of dimension 4 is isogenous to a Jacobian. Using methods of additive combinatorics, we are able to give a negative answer to a related question of Chai and Oort where the ambient Shimura Variety is a power of the modular curve.
We prove the Andre-Oort conjecture on special points of Shimura varieties for arbitrary products of modular curves, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. More explicitly, this means the following. Let n be a positive integer, and let S be a subset of C^n (with C the complex numbers) consisting of points all of whose coordinates are j-invariants of elliptic curves with complex multiplications. Then we prove (under GRH) that the irreducible components of the Zariski closure of S are ``special subvarieties'', i.e., determined by isogeny conditions on coordinates and pairs of coordinates. A…
In this paper we give a lower bound for the codimension of the Andreotti-Mayer loci in the moduli space of principally polarized complex abelian varieties. We also present a conjecture on this codimension.
