In this paper, we study the Newton polygons and Ekedahl-Oort types of reductions of abelian covers of the projective line branched at three points modulo a prime. We study the natural density of primes where these covers give supersingular and superspecial curves and show they appear much more often than expected. We also show that unlikely Newton polygons and Ekedahl-Oort types in the moduli space of curves appear frequently. Finally, we prove a theorem that provides evidence of Oort's Conjecture about Newton polygons in certain cases and gives new constructions of supersingular curves.
The Ekedahl-Oort type is a combinatorial invariant of a principally polarized abelian variety $A$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. It characterizes the $p$-torsion group scheme of $A$ up to isomorphism. Equivalently, it characterizes (the mod $p$ reduction of) the Dieudonné module of $A$ or the de Rham cohomology of $A$ as modules under the Frobenius and Vershiebung operators. There are very few results about which Ekedahl-Oort types occur for Jacobians of curves. In this paper, we consider the class of Hermitian curves, indexed by a prime power $q=p^n$, wh…

We show that the zip stratification given by an arbitrary $\Ghat$-zip over a scheme is pure. We deduce purity of the level-$m$-stratification for truncated Barsotti-Tate groups and purity of the Ekedahl-Oort stratification for special fibers of good models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type. We also show that all Ekedahl-Oort strata are quasi-affine schemes and generalize several properties of the Bruhat stratification from the PEL case to the case of Shimura varieties of Hodge type.
We study the Hodge-Tate period domain associated to a quaternionic Shimura curve at a prime of bad reduction, and give an explicit description of its Ekedahl-Oort stratification.
We prove vanishing results for the $0$th cohomology of automorphic line bundles on the Ekedahl--Oort strata of the special fiber of Hilbert--Blumenthal Shimura varieties. This work vastly extends to all Ekedahl--Oort strata previous results of Diamond--Kassaei and Goldring--Koskivirta. Furthermore, our results also cover the case of unitary Shimura varieties of rank $\leq 2$ attached to an arbitrary CM extension. We also prove a conjecture of Goldring--Koskivirta on the set of possible weights of automorphic forms.
Given a principally polarized abelian variety $A$ of dimension $g$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, the $p$ torsion $A[p]$ is a finite flat $p$-torsion group scheme of rank $p^{2g}$. There are exactly $2^g$ possible group schemes that can occur as some such $A[p]$. In this paper, we study which group schemes can occur as $J[p]$, where $J$ is the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We do this by computing explicit formulae for the action of Frobenius and its dual on the de Rham cohomology of a hyperelliptic curve with respect to a given ba…

We describe the intersection of the Torelli locus $j(\mathcal{M}_4^{ct}) = \mathcal{J}_4$ with Newton and Ekedahl-Oort strata related to the supersingular locus in characteristic two. We show that the locus of supersingular Jacobians $\mathcal{S}_4\cap\mathcal{J}_4$ in characteristic two is pure of dimension three. One way to obtain that result uses an analysis of the data of smooth genus four curves and principally polarized abelian fourfolds defined over $\mathbb{F}_2$, and another involves studying the Ekedahl-Oort types and using the indecomposability of some $\mathrm{BT}_1$ group schemes.
In the paper four stratifications in the reduction modulo $p$ of a general Shimura variety are studied: the Newton stratification, the Kottwitz-Rapoport stratification, the Ekedahl-Oort stratification and the Ekedahl-Kottwitz-Oort-Rapoport stratification. We formulate a system of axioms and show that these imply non-emptiness statements and closure relation statements concerning these various stratifications. These axioms are satisfied in the Siegel case.
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. A $BT_1$ group scheme over $k$ is a finite commutative group scheme which arises as the kernel of $p$ on a $p$-divisible (Barsotti--Tate) group. We compare three classifications of $BT_1$ group schemes, due in large part to Kraft, Ekedahl, and Oort, and defined using words, canonical filtrations, and permutations. Using this comparison, we determine the Ekedahl--Oort types of Fermat quotient curves and we compute four invariants of the $p$-torsion group schemes of these curves.
We construct group-theoretical generalizations of the Hasse invariant on strata closures of the stacks $G$-Zip$^μ$. Restricting to zip data of Hodge type, we obtain a group-theoretical Hasse invariant on every Ekedahl-Oort stratum closure of a general Hodge-type Shimura variety. A key tool is the construction of a stack of zip flags $G$-ZipFlag$^μ$, fibered in flag varieties over $G$-Zip$^μ$. It provides a simultaneous generalization of the "classical case" homogeneous complex manifolds studied by Griffiths-Schmid and the "flag space" for Siegel varieties studied by Ekedahl-van der Geer. There are open questions about which Newton polygons and Ekedahl-Oort types occur for Jacobians of smooth curves of genus $g$ in positive characteristic $p$. In this chapter, I survey the current state of knowledge about these questions. I include a new result, joint with Karemaker, which verifies, for each odd prime $p$, that there exist supersingular curves of genus $g$ defined over $\overline{\mathbb F}_p$ for infinitely many new values of $g$. I sketch a proof of Faber and Van der Geer's theorem about the geometry of the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space of curves. The chapter en…
We review the Newton stratification and Ekedahl-Oort stratification on the special fiber of a smooth integral model for a Shimura variety of Hodge type at a prime of good reduction. We show that the μ-ordinary locus coincides with the generic Ekedahl-Oort stratum, and that for any two geometric points in the μ-ordinary locus there is an isomorphism of the attached Dieudonne modules with additional structure. As a consequence, we proof that the μ-ordinary locus is open and dense, thus generalizing the results which were already known in the PEL-case. To prove our results we provide a method whi…
By a result of Moonen, there are exactly 20 positive-dimensional families of cyclic covers of the projective line for which the Torelli image is open and dense in the associated Shimura variety. For each of these, we compute the Newton polygons, and the $μ$-ordinary Ekedahl--Oort type, occurring in the characteristic $p$ reduction of the Shimura variety. We prove that all but a few of the Newton polygons appear on the open Torelli locus. As an application, we produce multiple new examples of Newton polygons and Ekedahl--Oort types of Jacobians of smooth curves in characteristic $p$. Under cert…
This paper investigates Galois branched covers of the open $p$-adic disc and their reductions to characteristic $p$. Using the field of norms functor of Fontaine and Wintenberger, we show that the special fiber of a Galois cover is determined by arithmetic and geometric properties of the generic fiber and its characteristic zero specializations. As applications, we derive a criterion for good reduction in the abelian case, and give an arithmetic reformulation of the local Oort Conjecture concerning the liftability of cyclic covers of germs of curves.
We enlarge the class of Rapoport-Zink spaces of Hodge type by modifying the centers of the associated $p$-adic reductive groups. These such-obtained Rapoport-Zink spaces are called of abelian type. The class of Rapoport-Zink spaces of abelian type is strictly larger than the class of Rapoport-Zink spaces of Hodge type, but the two type spaces are closely related as having isomorphic connected components. The rigid analytic generic fibers of formal Rapoport-Zink spaces of abelian type can be viewed as moduli spaces of local $G$-shtukas in mixed characteristic in the sense of Scholze. We prove t…
