We prove the Andre-Oort conjecture on special points of Shimura varieties for arbitrary products of modular curves, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. More explicitly, this means the following. Let n be a positive integer, and let S be a subset of C^n (with C the complex numbers) consisting of points all of whose coordinates are j-invariants of elliptic curves with complex multiplications. Then we prove (under GRH) that the irreducible components of the Zariski closure of S are ``special subvarieties'', i.e., determined by isogeny conditions on coordinates and pairs of coordinates. A weaker variant is proved unconditionally.
Let q be a prime power and E a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over Fq(T) given by a Weierstrass model. We survey the construction, with an explicit point of view, of the modular parametrization of E by the associated Drinfeld modular curve. We then prove a formula that allows us to evaluate this modular parametrization at cusps and we produce an explicit method to compute these values. Finally we illustrate our results with several examples in characteristic 2 and 3.
In this paper we describe the compactification of the Drinfeld modular curve. This compactification is analogous to the compactification of the classical modular curve given by Katz and Mazur. We show how the Weil pairing on Drinfeld modules that we defined in earlier work gives rise to a map on the Drinfeld modular curve. We introduce the Tate-Drinfeld module and show how this describes the formal neighbourhood of the scheme of cusps of the Drinfeld modular curve.
We prove that there are only finitely many modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ which are hyperelliptic. In odd characteristic we give a complete classification of such curves.
We determine the automorphism group of the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$, obtained as the quotient of the modular curve $X_0(N)$ by the group of its Atkin-Lehner involutions, for all square-free values of $N$.
We prove a genus formula for modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves. We use this formula to show that the reductions of modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves attain the Drinfeld-Vladut bound as the degree of the discriminant of $D$ tends to infinity.
Classical modular curves are of deep interest in arithmetic geometry. In this survey we show how the work of Fumiyuki Momose is involved in order to list the classical modular curves which satisfy that the set of quadratic points over $\mathbb{Q}$ is infinite. In particular we recall results of Momose on hyperelliptic modular curves and on automorphisms groups of modular curves. Moreover, we fix some inaccuracies of the existing literature in few statements concerning automorphism groups of modular curves and we make available different results that are difficult to find a precise reference, f…
A curve X over the field Q of rational numbers is modular if it is dominated by X_1(N) for some N; if in addition the image of its jacobian in J_1(N) is contained in the new subvariety of J_1(N), then X is called a new modular curve. We prove that for each integer g at least 2, the set of new modular curves over Q of genus g is finite and computable. For the computability result, we prove an algorithmic version of the de Franchis-Severi Theorem. Similar finiteness results are proved for new modular curves of bounded gonality, for new modular curves whose jacobian is a quotient of the new part …
In this paper we prove that there are finitely many modular curves that admit a smooth plane model. Moreover, if the degree of the model is greater than or equal to 19, no such curve exists. For modular curves of Shimura type we show that none can admit a smooth plane model of degree 5, 6 or 7. Further, if a modular curve of Shimura type admits a smooth plane model of degree 8 we show that it must be a twist of one of four curves.
Let X be a product of Drinfeld modular curves over a general base ring A of odd characteristic. We classify those subvarieties of X which contain a Zariski-dense set of CM points. This is an analogue of the André-Oort conjecture. As an application, we construct non-trivial families of higher Heegner points on modular elliptic curves over global function fields.
This paper presents the theory of holomorphic vector valued modular forms from a geometric perspective. More precisely, we define certain holomorphic vector bundles on the modular orbifold of generalized elliptic curves whose sections are vector valued modular forms. This perspective simplifies the theory, and it clarifies the role that exponents of representations of SL_2(Z) play in the holomorphic theory of vector valued modular forms. Further, it allows one to use standard techniques in algebraic geometry to deduce free-module theorems and dimension formulae (deduced previously by other aut…
We show how the Langlands-Kottwitz method can be used to determine the local factors of the Hasse-Weil zeta-function of the modular curve at places of bad reduction. On the way, we prove a conjecture of Haines and Kottwitz in this special case.
This article surveys some recent work of the author on Hilbert modular fourfolds X. After some preliminaries on the cohomology and special, codimension 2 cycles Z on X of Hirzebruch-Zagier type, a proof of the Tate conjecture for X over abelian fields is exposed. It is followed by a description of a method to construct classes in the Bloch's Chow group CH^3(X,1) by using Hecke translates of the cycles Z as above with suitable intersections in translates of modular curves. The article ends with the introduction of a modular Gersten complex for a general Shimura variety X and the corresponding g…
We give explicit equations for the simplest towers of Drinfeld modular curves over any finite field, and observe that they coincide with the asymptotically optimal towers of curves constructed by Garcia and Stichtenoth.
We determine which of the modular curves $X_Δ(N)$, that is, curves lying between $X_0(N)$ and $X_1(N)$, are bielliptic. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that one of these curves has exceptional automorphisms. Finally we find all $X_Δ(N)$ that have infinitely many quadratic points over $\mathbb{Q}$.
Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime. We show that the space of weight one Eisenstein series defines an embedding into $\PP^{(p-3)/2}$ of the modular curve $X_1(p)$ for the congruence group $Γ_1(p)$ that is scheme-theoretically cut out by explicit quadratic equations.
In this paper, we introduce modular polynomials for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(M)$ when $ X_0(M) $ has genus zero and therefore the polynomials are defined by a Hauptmodul of $ X_0(M) $. We show that the intersection number of two curves defined by two modular polynomials can be expressed as the sum of the numbers of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of positive definite binary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Z}$. We also show that the intersection numbers can be also combinatorially written by Fourier coefficients of the Siegel Eisenstein series of degree 2, weight 2 with respec…
We outline the proof of a theorem of M. Baker and A. Tamagawa that gives a complete description of the torsion points on a modular curve embedded in its Jacobian using the notion of an `almost rational torsion point.'
We describe how the quadratic Chabauty method may be applied to explicitly determine the set of rational points on modular curves of genus $g>1$ whose Jacobians have Mordell--Weil rank $g$. This extends our previous work on the split Cartan curve of level 13 and allows us to consider modular curves that may have few known rational points or nontrivial local height contributions at primes of bad reduction. We illustrate our algorithms with a number of examples where we determine the set of rational points on several modular curves of genus 2 and 3: this includes Atkin--Lehner quotients $X_0^+(N…
We determine all modular curves X(N) (with $N\geq 7$) which are hyperelliptic or bielliptic. We make available a proof that the automorphism group of X(N) coincides with the normalizer of $Γ(N)$ in $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$.
We relate a part of the abelian etale fundamental group of curves over local fields to the component group of the Neron model of the jacobian. We apply the result to the modular curve X_0(p)/Q_p to show that the unramified abelian covering X_1(p) over X_0(p) (Shimura covering) uses up all the possible ramification over the special fiber of X_0(p).
We study the real components of modular curves. Our main result is an abstract group-theoretic description of the real components of a modular curve defined by a congruence subgroup of level N in terms of the corresponding subgroup of SL_2(Z/NZ). We apply this result to several families of modular curves (such as X_0(N), X_1(N), etc.) to obtain formulas for the number of real components. Somewhat surprisingly, the multiplicative order of 2 modulo N has a strong influence in many cases: for instance, if N is an odd prime then the real locus of X_1(N) is connected if and only if -1 and 2 generat…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. Let X(p^e;N) be the curve parameterizing elliptic curves with full level N structure (where p does not divide N) and full level p^e Igusa structure. By modular curve, we mean a quotient of any X(p^e;N) by any subgroup of ((Z/p^e Z)^* x \SL_2(Z/NZ))/{+-1}. We prove that in any sequence of distinct modular curves over k, the k-gonality tends to infinity. This extends earlier work, in which the result was proved for particular sequences of modular curves, such as X_0(N) for p not dividing N. We give an application to the function field a…
We determine the stable reduction at $p$ of all three point covers of the projective line with Galois group ${\rm SL}_2(p)$. As a special case, we recover the results of Deligne and Rapoport on the reduction of the modular curves $X_0(p)$ and $X_1(p)$. Our method does not use the fact that modular curves are moduli spaces. Instead, we rely on results of Raynaud and the authors which describe the stable reduction of three point covers whose Galois group is strictly divisible by $p$.
We bound the j-invariant of S-integral points on arbitrary modular curves over arbitrary fields, in terms of the congruence group defining the curve, assuming a certain Runge condition is satisfied by our objects. We then apply our bounds to prove that for sufficiently large prime p, the points of $X_0^+ (p^r)(Q)$ with r>1 are either cusps or CM points. This can be interpreted as the non-existence of quadratic elliptic Q-curves with higher prime-power degree.
Let $X_0(I)$ be the Drinfeld's modular curve with level $I$ structure, where $I$ is a monic square-free ideal in $\F_{q}[T]$. In this paper we show the existence of an element in the motivic cohomology group $H^3_{\M}(X_0(I) \times X_0(I),\Q(2))$ whose regulator is related to a special value of a Ranking-Selberg convolution $L$-function. This result is the function field analogue of a theorem of Beilinson for the self product of a modular curve.
Let $N\geq 1$ be a square-free integer such that the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$ has genus $\geq 2$. We prove that $X_0^*(N)$ is bielliptic exactly for $19$ values of $N$, and we determine the automorphism group of these bielliptic curves. In particular, we obtain the first examples of nontrivial $Aut(X_0^*(N))$ when the genus of $X_0^*(N)$ is $\geq 3$. Moreover, we prove that the set of all quadratic points over $\mathbb{Q}$ for the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$ with genus $\geq 2$ and $N$ square-free is not finite exactly for $51$ values of $N$.
Let $F_n$ denote the Fermat curve given by $x^n+y^n=z^n$ and let $μ_n$ denote the Galois module of $n$th roots of unity. It is known that the integral homology group $H_1(F_n,\Z)$ is a cyclic $\Z[μ_n\times μ_n]$ module. In this paper, we prove this result using modular symbols and the modular description of Fermat curves; moreover we find a basis for the integral homology group $H_1(F_n,\Z)$. We also construct a family of Fermat curves using the Fermat surface and compute its monodromy.
We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}_0(N)$ of a modular curve $X_0(N)$ with respect to a reduced divisor given by the sum of all cusps on it. When $N$ is a power of a prime $\geq 5$, we exhibit that the group of rational torsion points $\widetilde{J}_0(N)(\mathbb{Q})_{\mathrm{Tor}}$ tends to be much smaller than the classical Jacobian.
By combining theorems of Drinfeld and Strauch, we show that the monodromy representation on the special fibre of a Drinfeld modular variety, with level not divisible by the characteristic, is surjective. We illustrate this result in the special case of Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$-modules in level $t$, and apply this to show that the Kronecker factors of a Drinfeld modular polynomial in rank $r$ are irreducible.
This article gives an introduction for mathematicians interested in numerical computations in algebraic geometry and number theory to some recent progress in algorithmic number theory, emphasising the key role of approximate computations with modular curves and their Jacobians. These approximations are done in polynomial time in the dimension and the required number of significant digits. We explain the main ideas of how the approximations are done, illustrating them with examples, and we sketch some applications in number theory.
We extend the explicit quadratic Chabauty methods developed in previous work by the first two authors to the case of non-hyperelliptic curves. This results in an algorithm to compute the rational points on a curve of genus $g \ge 2$ over the rationals whose Jacobian has Mordell-Weil rank $g$ and Picard number greater than one, and which satisfies some additional conditions. This algorithm is then applied to the modular curve $X_{s}(13)$, completing the classification of non-CM elliptic curves over $\mathbf{Q}$ with split Cartan level structure due to Bilu-Parent and Bilu-Parent-Rebolledo.
In this work, we set up a theory of p-adic modular forms over Shimura curves over totally real fields which allows us to consider also non-integral weights. In particular, we define an analogue of the sheaves of k-th invariant differentials over the Shimura curves we are interested in, for any p-adic character. In this way, we are able to introduce the notion of overconvergent modular form of any p-adic weight. Moreover, our sheaves can be put in p-adic families over a suitable rigid-analytic space, that parametrizes the weights. Finally, we define Hecke operators, including the U operator, th…
Beilinson obtained a formula relating the special value of the L-function of H^2 of a product of modular curves to the regulator of an element of a motivic cohomology group - thus providing evidence for his general conjectures on special values of L-functions. In this paper we prove a similar formula for the L-function of the product of two Drinfeld modular curves providing evidence for an analogous conjecture in the case of function fields.
We describe a method to determine all the isomorphism classes of principal polarizations of the modular abelian surfaces $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication attached to a normalized newform $f$ without complex multiplication. We include an example of $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication for which we find numerically a curve $C$ whose Jacobian is $A_f$ up to numerical approximation, and we prove that it has quaternionic multiplication and is isogenous to $A_f$.
We study the degree of the special cubic fourfolds in the Hilbert scheme of cubic fourfolds via a computation of the generating series of Heegner divisors of even lattice of signature (2, 20).
The $E_8$ root lattice can be constructed from the modular curve $X(13)$ by the invariant theory for the simple group $\text{PSL}(2, 13)$. This gives a different construction of the $E_8$ root lattice. It also gives an explicit construction of the modular curve $X(13)$.
We investigate modularity of elliptic curves over a general totally real number field, establishing a finiteness result for the set non-modular $j$-invariants. By analyzing quadratic points on some modular curves, we show that all elliptic curves over certain real quadratic fields are modular.
We classify the three-dimensional representations of the modular group that are reducible but indecomposable, and their associated spaces of holomorphic vector-valued modular forms. We then demonstrate how such representations may be employed to compute periods of modular curves. This technique obviates the use of Hecke operators, and therefore provides a method for studying noncongruence modular curves as well as congruence.
Among all the dynamical modular curves associated to quadratic polynomial maps, we determine which curves have infinitely many quadratic points. This yields a classification statement on preperiodic points for quadratic polynomials over quadratic fields, extending previous work of Poonen, Faber, and the authors.
We prove that integral points can be effectively determined on all but finitely many modular curves, and on all but one modular curve of prime power level.
We introduce the concept of quadratic modular symbol and study how these symbols are related to quadratic p-adic L-functions. These objects were introduced in [3] in the case of modular curves. In this paper, we discuss a method to attach quadratic modular symbols and quadratic p-adic L-functions to more general Shimura curves.
We describe an algorithm for computing a $\Q$-rational model for the quotient of a modular curve by an automorphism group, under mild assumptions on the curve and the automorphisms, by determining $q$-expansions for a basis of the corresponding space of cusp forms. We also give a moduli interpretation for general morphisms between modular curves.
In the classical setting, the modular equation of level $N$ for the modular curve $X_0(1)$ is the polynomial relation satisfied by $j(τ)$ and $j(Nτ)$, where $j(τ)$ is the standard elliptic $j$-function. In this paper, we will describe a method to compute modular equations in the setting of Shimura curves. The main ingredient is the explicit method for computing Hecke operators on the spaces of modular forms on Shimura curves developed in [13].
Triangular modular curves are a generalization of modular curves that arise from quotients of the upper half-plane by congruence subgroups of hyperbolic triangle groups. These curves also arise naturally as a source of Belyi maps with monodromy $\text{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ or $\text{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We present a computational approach to enumerate Borel-type triangular modular curves of low genus, and we carry out this enumeration for prime level and small genus.
We study the existence of rational points on modular curves of $\cal{D}$-elliptic sheaves over local fields and the structure of special fibres of these curves. We discuss some applications which include finding presentations for arithmetic groups arising from quaternion algebras, finding the equations of modular curves of $\cal{D}$-elliptic sheaves, and constructing curves violating the Hasse principle.
In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm for computing mod $\ell$ Galois representations associated to eigenforms of arbitrary levels prime to $\ell$. Precisely, we present a method to find the Jacobians of modular curves which have the smallest possible dimensions in a well-defined sense to realize the modular Galois representations. This algorithm also works without the assumption $\ell \ge k-1$, where $k$ are the weights of the eigenforms.
