We determine the stable reduction at $p$ of all three point covers of the projective line with Galois group ${\rm SL}_2(p)$. As a special case, we recover the results of Deligne and Rapoport on the reduction of the modular curves $X_0(p)$ and $X_1(p)$. Our method does not use the fact that modular curves are moduli spaces. Instead, we rely on results of Raynaud and the authors which describe the stable reduction of three point covers whose Galois group is strictly divisible by $p$.
We compute the stable reduction of the Lubin-Tate space $X(π^2)$ in the equal characteristic case, on the basis of Coleman-McMurdy's ideas. Namely, in this paper, we actually construct a stable covering of $X(π^2).$ This paper also includes intersection multiplicity datum of the stable model of $X(π^2)$. Our method is very explicit and elementary.
In this paper we investigate the (classical) weights of mod $p$ Siegel modular forms of degree 2 toward studying Serre's conjecture for $GSp_4$. We first construct various theta operators on the space of such forms a la Katz and define the theta cycles for the specific theta operators. Secondly we study the partial Hasse invariants on each Ekedahl-Oort strata and their local behaviors. This enable us to obtain a kind of weight reduction theorem for mod $p$ Siegel modular forms of degree 2 without increasing level.
We prove that there are only finitely many even lattices L of signature (2,n) with n>14 such that the modular variety defined by the stable orthogonal group of L is not of general type.
We study stable vector bundles over the modular curve X(p) corresponding to the principal congruence subgroup of the modular group of prime level p which are invariant with respect to its automorphism group.
We study the reduction of Picard modular surfaces modulo an inert prime, mod p and p-adic modular forms. We construct a theta operator on such modular forms and study its poles and its effect on Fourier-Jacobi expansions.
The aim of this paper is to study some modular contractions of the moduli space of stable pointed curves. These new moduli spaces, which are modular compactifications of the moduli space of smooth pointed curves, are related with the minimal model program for the moduli space of stable pointed curves and have been introduced in a previous work of the authors. We interpret them as log canonical models of adjoints divisors and we then describe the Shokurov decomposition of a region of boundary divisors on the moduli space of stable pointed curves.
We prove a genus formula for modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves. We use this formula to show that the reductions of modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves attain the Drinfeld-Vladut bound as the degree of the discriminant of $D$ tends to infinity.
We show how the Langlands-Kottwitz method can be used to determine the local factors of the Hasse-Weil zeta-function of the modular curve at places of bad reduction. On the way, we prove a conjecture of Haines and Kottwitz in this special case.
In this paper we study the $p$-adic dynamics of prime-to-$p$ Hecke operators on the set of points of modular curves in both cases of good ordinary and supersingular reduction. We pay special attention to the dynamics on the set of CM points. In the case of ordinary reduction we employ the Serre-Tate coordinates, while in the case of supersingular reduction, we use a parameter on the deformation space of the unique formal group of height $2$ over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$, and take advantage of the Gross-Hopkins period map.
We construct the minimal compactification of some modular Siegel varieties at their bad reduction places. These varieties parametrize principally polarized abelian schemes endowed with a parahoric level structure at a prime number $p$, and with an auxiliary level structure ; such varieties have bad reduction at $p$. We also sketch the arithmetic theory of the associated Siegel modular forms. ----- Nous construisons la compactification minimale de certaines varietes modulaires de Siegel en leurs places de mauvaise reduction. Ces varietes parametrent des schemas abeliens principalement polarises…
We present explicit equations of semi-stable elliptic surfaces (i.e., having only type $I_n$ singular fibers) which are associated to the torsion-free genus zero congruence subgroups of the modular group as classified by A. Sebbar.
The elliptic modular surface of level 4 is a complex K3 surface with Picard number 20. This surface has a model over a number field such that its reduction modulo 3 yields a surface isomorphic to the Fermat quartic surface in characteristic 3, which is supersingular. The specialization induces an embedding of the Néron-Severi lattices. Using this embedding, we determine the automorphism group of this K3 surface over a discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic whose residue field is of characteristic 3. The elliptic modular surface of level 4 has a fixed-point free involution that gives r…
It is well known that, fixed an even, unimodular, positive definite quadratic form, one can construct a modular form in each genus; this form is called the theta series associated to the quadratic form. Varying the quadratic form, one obtains the ring of stable modular forms. We show that the differences of theta series associated to specific pairs of quadratic forms vanish on the locus of hyperelliptic Jacobians in each genus. In our examples, the quadratic forms have rank 24, 32 and 48. The proof relies on a geometric result about the boundary of the Satake compactification of the hyperellip…
R. Coleman and K. McMurdy compute the stable reduction of $X_0(p^3).$ On the basis of their ideas, we compute the stable reduction of $X_0(p^4).$ As a result, in the stable reduction of $X_0(p^4)$, we find irreducible components, defined by $a^p-a=t^{p+1}$. These components are called Deligne-Lusztig curve for ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p).$ We also compute the intersection multiplicity datum in the stable reduction of $X_0(p^4)$.
In their paper Livné and Yui (math.AG/0304497) discuss several examples of non-rigid Calabi-Yau varieties which admit semi-stable K3-fibrations with 6 singular fibres over a base which is a rational modular curve. They also establish the modularity of the L-function of these examples. The purpose of this note is to point out that the examples which were listed in their paper, but which do not lead to semi-stable fibrations, are still modular in the sense that their L-function is associated to modular forms. We treat the case associated to the group Gamma_1(7) in detail, but our technique also …
In this paper, we show that an odd Galois representation rhobar: Gal(Qbar/Q) --> GL_2(F_9) satisfying certain local conditions at 3 and 5 is modular. Our main tool is an idea of Taylor, which reduces the problem to that of exhibiting points on a Hilbert modular surface which are defined over a solvable extension of Q, and which satisfy certain reduction properties. As a corollary, we show that Hilbert-Blumenthal abelian surfaces over Q with good ordinary reduction at 3 and 5 are modular.
This note gives a survey on some results related to the stable reduction of three point covers, which were the topic of my talk at the {\em Journées Arithmetiques} 2003 in Graz.
We investigate the modularity of three non-rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds with bad reduction at 11 which arise as fibre products of rational elliptic surfaces. For this purpose, we apply a method by Serre to compare two-dimensional 2-adic Galois representations with uneven trace. Hereby, we associate two of the threefolds (or, more precisely, a two-dimensional piece of their middle cohomology group) to newforms of weight 4 and level 22 and 55, respectively. This enables us to compute the zeta-functions of these varieties up to the Euler factors of the bad primes.
In previous work, the first author developed an algorithm for the computation of Hilbert modular forms. In this paper, we extend this to all totally real number fields of even degree and nontrivial class group. Using the algorithm over $\Q(\sqrt{10})$ and $\Q(\sqrt{85})$ and their Hilbert class fields, we present some new instances of the conjectural Eichler-Shimura construction for totally real fields, and in particular find new examples of modular abelian varieties with everywhere good reduction.
We present the program Boundary, whose source files are available at http://people.sissa.it/~maggiolo/boundary/. Given two natural numbers g and n satisfying 2g+n-2>0, the program generates all genus g stable graphs with n unordered marked points. Each such graph determines the topological type of a nodal stable curve of arithmetic genus g with n unordered marked points. Our motivation comes from the fact that the boundary of the moduli space of stable genus g, n-pointed curves can be stratified by taking loci of curves of a fixed topological type.
We prove that the moduli spaces of n-pointed m-stable curves introduced in our previous paper have projective coarse moduli. We use the resulting spaces to run an analogue of the Hassett-Keel log minimal model program for the moduli space of n-pointed stable curves of genus one.
Let $K$ be a local field of residue characteristic $p$. Let $C$ be a curve over $K$ whose minimal proper regular model has totally degenerate semi-stable reduction. Under certain hypotheses, we compute the prime-to-$p$ rational torsion subgroup on the Jacobian of $C$. We also determine divisibility of line bundles on $C$, including rationality of theta characteristics and higher spin structures. These computations utilize arithmetic on the special fiber of $C$.
In this paper we study the semi-stable reduction of $p$ and $p^2$-cyclic covers of curves in equal characteristic $p>0$. The main tool we use is the classical Artin-Schreier-Witt theory for $p^n$-cyclic covers in characteristic $p$. Although the results of this paper concern only the cases of degree $p$ and $p^2$-cyclic cover we develop the techniques and the framework in which the general cyclic case can be studied.
Ihara's proof that the reduction of the modular curve $X_0(n)$ at a prime $p$ not dividing $n$ has many points over a quadratic extension is adapted to the drinfeld modular curves $X_0(n)$. In order to do so, some properties of drinfeld modular varieties that have no proof in the literature are proven. The text is more or less self-contained.
The space of smooth curves admits a beautiful compactification by the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable curves. In this paper, we undertake a systematic investigation of alternate modular compactifications of the space of smooth curves.
In this paper, we completely work out the log minimal model program for the moduli space of stable curves of genus three. We employ a rational multiple $αδ$ of the divisor $δ$ of singular curves as the boundary divisor, construct the log canonical model for the pair $(\bar{\mathcal M}_3, αδ)$ using geometric invariant theory as we vary $α$ from one to zero, and give a modular interpretation of each log canonical model and the birational maps between them. By using the modular description, we are able to identify all but one log canonical models with existing compactifications of $M_3$, some ne…
For a dynamical system on n-dimensional projective space over a number field or a function field, we show that semi-stable reduction implies the minimality of the resultant. We use this to show that every such dynamical system over a number field admits a globally minimal presentation.
We study variants of the local models constructed by the second author and Zhu and consider corresponding integral models of Shimura varieties of abelian type. We determine all cases of good, resp. of semi-stable, reduction under tame ramification hypotheses.
The Deligne-Mumford stable reduction theorem asserts that for a family of stable curves over the punctured disk, after a finite base change, the family can be completed in a unique way to a family of stable curves over the disk. In this survey we discuss stable reduction theorems in a number of different contexts. This includes a review of recent results on abelian varieties, canonically polarized varieties, and singularities. We also consider the semi-stable reduction theorem and results concerning simultaneous stable reduction.
Let K be a number field, O_K the ring of integers of K and X a stable curve over O_K of genus g >= 2. In this note, we will prove a strict inequality ( (K_{X/S})^2 / [K : Q] ) > Height_{Fal}(J(X_K)), where $K_{X/S}$ is the canonically metrized dualizing sheaf of X over S = Spec(O_K) and Height_{Fal}(J(X_K)) is the Faltings modular height of the Jacobian of X_K. As corollary, for any constant A, the set of all stable curves X over O_K with ( (K_{X/S})^2 / [K : Q] ) <= A is finite under the following equivalence. For stable curves X and Y, X is equivalent to Y if X is isomorphic to Y over O_{K'}…
In this paper, we define syntomic complex for modulus pair (X,D), where X is regular semi-stable family and D is an effective Cartier divisor on X. We compute its cohomology sheaves.
We answer negatively an open problem of Illusie on the DR-decomposability of the log de Rham complex of the special fiber of a semi-stable reduction over the Witt ring. We also show that $E_1$ degeneration of the Hodge to log de Rham spectral sequence does not imply DR-decomposability of semi-stable varieties.
We prove that up to scaling there are only finitely many integral lattices L of signature (2,n) with n>20 or n=17 such that the modular variety defined by the orthogonal group of L is not of general type. In particular, when n>107, every modular variety defined by an arithmetic group for a rational quadratic form of signature (2,n) is of general type. We also obtain similar finiteness in n>8 for the stable orthogonal groups. As a byproduct we derive finiteness of lattices admitting reflective modular form of bounded vanishing order, which proves a conjecture of Gritsenko and Nikulin.
The semi-simplicity of the Hodge group is proved for a simple Abelian variety with a stable reduction of odd toric (reductive) rank. If, besides, the dimension of the Abelian variety is an odd integer, then the Hodge conjecture on algebraic cycles holds for it.
The aim of this paper is to study all the natural first steps of the minimal model program for the moduli space of stable pointed curves. We prove that they admit a modular interpretation and we study their geometric properties. As a particular case, we recover the first few Hassett-Keel log canonical models. As a by-product, we produce many birational morphisms from the moduli space of stable pointed curves to alternative modular projective compactifications of the moduli space of pointed curves.
We study stable reduction of curves in the case where a tamely ramified base extension is sufficient. If X is a smooth curve defined over the fraction field of a strictly henselian discrete valuation ring, there is a criterion, due to T. Saito, that describes precisely, in terms of the geometry of the minimal model with strict normal crossings of X, when a tamely ramified extension suffices in order for X to obtain stable reduction. For such curves we construct an explicit extension that realizes the stable reduction, and we furthermore show that this extension is minimal. We also obtain purel…
In this paper we study the semi-stable reduction of Galois covers of degree p above semi-stable curves over a complete discrete valuation ring of inequal characteristics (0,p). We are also able to describe the Galois action on these covers in terms of some geometric and combinatorial datas in characteristic p endowed with the action of the Galois group of the residue field.
We compute the stable reduction of some Galois covers of the projective line branched at three points. These covers are constructed using Hurwitz spaces parameterizing metacyclic covers. The reduction is determined by a hypergeometric differential equation. This generalizes the result of Deligne- Rapoport on the reduction of the modular curve X(p).
A cheap method for constructing canonical models and complete moduli for complex projective varieties with a structure called "rational plurifibration" is given. A result about semistable reduction (whose nature is slightly different from alg-geom/9707012) is deduced. The method involves recursive application of moduli stacks of twisted stable maps (math.AG/9908167) and a systematic circumvention of any difficult MMP issues.
The stable reduction theorem of Deligne and Mumford --- The moduli space of smooth projective curves of genus $g$ is a quasi-projective algebraic variety, but is not projective. To understand its geometry, it may be crucial to consider compactifications of this space. By allowing to parameterize as well curves with controlled singularities (the so called stable curves), Deligne and Mumford constructed a projective compactification. The properness of this compactification translates into the stable reduction theorem that they prove, its projectivity is a later theorem of Knudsen and Mumford. Th…

The stable reduction theorem says that a family of curves of genus $g\geq 2$ over a punctured curve can be uniquely completed (after possible base change) by inserting certain stable curves at the punctures. We give a new proof of this result for curves defined over $\mathbb{C}$ using the Kähler-Einstein metrics on the fibers to obtain the limiting stable curves at the punctures.
