We deduce an analogue of the Bogomolov conjecture for non-degenerate subvarieties in fibered products of families of elliptic curves from the author's recent theorem on equidistribution in families of abelian varieties. This generalizes results of DeMarco and Mavraki and improves certain results of Manin-Mumford type proven by Masser and Zannier to results of Bogomolov type, yielding the first results of this type for subvarieties of relative dimension $>1$ in families of abelian varieties with trivial trace.
Let $E_λ$ be the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Given $n$ linearly independent points $P_1,\dots , P_n \in E_λ\left(\overline{\mathbb{Q}(λ)}\right)$ we prove that there are at most finitely many complex numbers $λ_0$ such that $E_{λ_0} $ has complex multiplication and $P_1(λ_0), \dots ,P_n(λ_0)$ are dependent over $End(E_{λ_0})$. This implies a positive answer to a question of Bertrand and, combined with a previous work in collaboration with Capuano, proves the Zilber-Pink conjecture for a curve in a fibered power of an elliptic scheme when everything is defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}…
We extend the dictionary between the BPS spectrum of Heterotic strings and the one of F-/M-theory compactifications on $K3$ fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds to cases with higher rank non-Abelian gauge groups and in particular to dual pairs between Heterotic CHL orbifolds and compactifications on Calabi-Yau 3-folds with a compatible genus one fibration. We show how to obtain the new supersymmetric index purely from the Calabi-Yau geometry by reconstructing the Noether-Lefschetz generators, which are vector-valued modular forms. There is an isomorphism between the latter objects and vector-valued latt…
We calculate the generating functions of BPS indices using their modular properties in Type II and M-theory compactifications on compact genus one fibered CY 3-folds with singular fibers and additional rational sections or just $N$-sections, in order to study string dualities in four and five dimensions as well as rigid limits in which gravity decouples. The generating functions are Jacobi-forms of $Γ_1(N)$ with the complexified fiber volume as modular parameter. The string coupling $λ$, or the $ε_\pm$ parameters in the rigid limit, as well as the masses of charged hypermultiplets and non-Abel…
Fix an elliptic curve $E_0$ without CM and a non-isotrivial elliptic scheme over a smooth irreducible curve, both defined over the algebraic numbers. Consider the union of all images of a fixed finite-rank subgroup (of arbitrary rank) of $E_0^g$, also defined over the algebraic numbers, under all isogenies between $E_0^g$ and some fiber of the $g$-th fibered power $\mathcal{A}$ of the elliptic scheme, where $g$ is a fixed natural number. As a special case of a slightly more general result, we characterize the subvarieties (of arbitrary dimension) inside $\mathcal{A}$ that have potentially Zari…
Suppose $\mathcal{E} \to B$ is a non-isotrivial elliptic surface defined over a number field, for smooth projective curve $B$. Let $k$ denote the function field $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(B)$ and $E$ the associated elliptic curve over $k$. In this article, we construct adelically metrized $\mathbb{R}$-divisors $\overline{D}_X$ on the base curve $B$ over a number field, for each $X \in E(k)\otimes \mathbb{R}$. We prove non-degeneracy of the Arakelov-Zhang intersection numbers $\overline{D}_X\cdot \overline{D}_Y$, as a biquadratic form on $E(k)\otimes \mathbb{R}$. As a consequence, we have the follo…
Let $\mathcal{A} \rightarrow S$ be an abelian scheme over an irreducible variety over $\mathbb{C}$ of relative dimension $g$. For any simply-connected subset $Δ$ of $S^{\mathrm{an}}$ one can define the Betti map from $\mathcal{A}_Δ$ to $\mathbb{T}^{2g}$, the real torus of dimension $2g$, by identifying each closed fiber of $\mathcal{A}_Δ \rightarrow Δ$ with $\mathbb{T}^{2g}$ via the Betti homology. Computing the generic rank of the Betti map restricted to a subvariety $X$ of $\mathcal{A}$ is useful to study Diophantine problems, e.g. proving the Geometric Bogomolov Conjecture over characterist…
In this work we prove a bound for the torsion in Mordell-Weil groups of smooth elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3- and 4-folds. In particular, we show that the set which can occur on a smooth elliptic Calabi-Yau $n$-fold for ($n\geq 3$) is contained in the set of subgroups which appear on a rational elliptic surface, and is slightly larger for $n = 2$. The key idea in our proof is showing that any elliptic fibration with sufficiently large torsion has singularities in codimension 2 which do not admit a crepant resolution. We prove this by explicitly constructing and studying maps to a modular c…
