We extend the dictionary between the BPS spectrum of Heterotic strings and the one of F-/M-theory compactifications on $K3$ fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds to cases with higher rank non-Abelian gauge groups and in particular to dual pairs between Heterotic CHL orbifolds and compactifications on Calabi-Yau 3-folds with a compatible genus one fibration. We show how to obtain the new supersymmetric index purely from the Calabi-Yau geometry by reconstructing the Noether-Lefschetz generators, which are vector-valued modular forms. There is an isomorphism between the latter objects and vector-valued lattice Jacobi forms, which relates them to the elliptic genera and twisted-twined elliptic genera of six- and five-dimensional Heterotic strings. The meromorphic Jacobi forms generate the dimensions of the refined cohomology of the Hilbert schemes of symmetric products of the fiber and allow us to refine the BPS indices in the fiber and therefore to obtain, conjecturally, actual state counts. Using the properties of the vector-valued lattice Jacobi forms we also provide a mathematical proof of the non-Abelian weak gravity conjecture for F-/M-theory compactified on this general class of fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds.
We determine several classes of smooth complex projective surfaces on which Zariski decomposition can be combined with vanishing theorems to yield cohomology formulae for all line bundles. The obtained formulae express cohomologies in terms of divisor class intersections, and are adapted to the decomposition of the effective cone into Zariski chambers. In particular, we show this occurs on generalised del Pezzo surfaces, toric surfaces, and K3 surfaces. In the second part we use these surface results to derive formulae for all line bundle cohomology on a simple class of elliptically fibered Ca…
We determine the discrete gauge symmetries that arise in F-theory compactifications on examples of genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds without a section. We construct genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds using Fano manifolds, cyclic 3-fold covers of Fano 4-folds, and Segre embeddings of products of projective spaces. Discrete $\mathbb{Z}_5$, $\mathbb{Z}_4$, $\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries arise in these constructions. We introduce a general method to obtain multisections for several constructions of genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. The pullbacks of hyperplane classes under…
We investigate gauge theories and matter contents in F-theory compactifications on families of genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds lacking a global section. To construct families of genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds that lack a global section, we consider two constructions: hypersurfaces in a product of projective spaces, and double covers of a product of projective spaces. We consider specific forms of defining equations for these genus-one fibrations, so that genus-one fibers possess complex multiplications of specific orders. These symmetries enable a detailed analysis of gauge theories…
We propose a way to examine N=1 and N=2 string dualities on Calabi-Yau three-folds or extensions. Our way is to find out or to construct two types of toric representations of a Calabi-Yau three-fold, which contain phases topologically equivalent or phases connected by flops. We discuss how to find relations among Calabi-Yau three-folds realized in different toric representations. We examine several examples of Calabi-Yau three-folds which have the Hodge numbers, $(h^{1,1},h^{2,1})=(5,185)$ and the various numbers of K3 fibers. We observe that each phase of our examples contains Del Pezzo 4-cyc…
We analyze heterotic line bundle models on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau three-folds over weak Fano bases. In order to facilitate Wilson line breaking to the standard model group, we focus on elliptically fibered three-folds with a second section and a freely-acting involution. Specifically, we consider toric weak Fano surfaces as base manifolds and identify six such manifolds with the required properties. The requisite mathematical tools for the construction of line bundle models on these spaces, including the calculation of line bundle cohomology, are developed. A computer scan leads to mo…
We calculate the generating functions of BPS indices using their modular properties in Type II and M-theory compactifications on compact genus one fibered CY 3-folds with singular fibers and additional rational sections or just $N$-sections, in order to study string dualities in four and five dimensions as well as rigid limits in which gravity decouples. The generating functions are Jacobi-forms of $Γ_1(N)$ with the complexified fiber volume as modular parameter. The string coupling $λ$, or the $ε_\pm$ parameters in the rigid limit, as well as the masses of charged hypermultiplets and non-Abel…
In this study, four-dimensional $N=1$ F-theory models with multiple U(1) gauge group factors are constructed. A class of rational elliptic 4-folds, which we call as "$\frac{1}{2}$Calabi-Yau 4-folds," is introduced, and we construct the elliptically fibered 4-folds by utilizing them. This yields a novel approach for building families of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds with positive Mordell-Weil ranks. The introduced $\frac{1}{2}$Calabi-Yau 4-folds possess the characteristic property wherein the sum of the ranks of the singularity type and the Mordell-Weil group is always equal to six. T…
In this study, we introduce a new class of rational elliptic 3-folds, which we refer to as "1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds". We construct elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds by utilizing these rational elliptic 3-folds. The construction yields a novel approach to build elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds of various Mordell-Weil ranks. Our construction of Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be considered as a three-dimensional generalization of the operation of gluing pairs of 1/2 K3 surfaces to yield elliptic K3 surfaces. From one to seven $U(1)$s form in six-dimensional $N=1$ F-theory on the constructed C…
We study aspects of an equivalent relation of the charge completeness in six-dimensional (6D) $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity theory and a standard assumption on the global structure of the gauge group involving F-theory geometry, recently proved by Morrison and Taylor. We constructed and analyzed a novel 6D supergravity theory, realized as F-theory, on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Our construction yields a novel 6D theory with Mordell-Weil torsion $\mathbb{Z}_4\oplus\mathbb{Z}_4$. Furthermore, we deduce the gauge group and matter fields arising in the 6D F-theory model on the c…
Nagao-Nakajima introduced counting invariants of stable perverse coherent systems on small resolutions of Calabi-Yau 3-folds and determined them on the resolved conifold. Their invariants recover DT/PT invariants and Szendröi's non-commutative invariants in some chambers of stability conditions. In this paper, we study an analogue of their work on Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We define counting invariants for stable perverse coherent systems using primary insertions and compute them in all chambers of stability conditions. We also study counting invariants of local resolved conifold $\mathcal{O}_{\math…
In our previous paper with Maulik, we proposed a conjectural Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) type formula for the generating series of stable pair invariants on Calabi-Yau (CY) 4-folds. The purpose of this paper is to give an interpretation of the above GV type formula in terms of wall-crossing phenomena in the derived category. We introduce invariants counting LePotier's stable pairs on CY 4-folds, and show that they count certain stable objects in D0-D2-D8 bound states in the derived category. We propose a conjectural wall-crossing formula for the generating series of our invariants, which recovers the …
Motivated by S-duality modularity conjectures in string theory, we define new invariants counting a restricted class of 2-dimensional torsion sheaves, enumerating pairs $Z\subset H$ in a Calabi-Yau threefold X. Here H is a member of a sufficiently positive linear system and Z is a 1-dimensional subscheme of it. The associated sheaf is the ideal sheaf of $Z\subset H$, pushed forward to X and considered as a certain Joyce-Song pair in the derived category of X. We express these invariants in terms of the MNOP invariants of X.
In this paper, we extend the analysis of scanning the perturbatively flat flux vacua (PFFV) for the type IIB orientifold compactifications on the mirror of the projective complete intersection Calabi-Yau (pCICY) 3-folds, which are realized as hypersurfaces in the product of complex projective spaces. We present the PFFV statistics for all the 36 pCICYs with $h^{1,1}=2$ and classify them into two categories of being K3-fibered model and non K3-fibered model. We find that all the K3-fibered models have a significantly large number of PFFV leading to physical vacua by fixing the axio-dilaton by n…
For a K3 surface S, we study motivic invariants of stable pairs moduli spaces associated to 3-fold thickenings of S. We conjecture suitable deformation and divisibility invariances for the Betti realization. Our conjectures, together with earlier calculations of Kawai-Yoshioka, imply a full determination of the theory in terms of the Hodge numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points of S. The work may be viewed as the third in a sequence of formulas starting with Yau-Zaslow and Katz-Klemm-Vafa (each recovering the former). Numerical data suggest the motivic invariants are linked to the Mathieu M_…
Recently, Cao-Maulik-Toda defined stable pair invariants of a compact Calabi-Yau 4-fold $X$. Their invariants are conjecturally related to the Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of $X$ defined using Gromov-Witten theory by Klemm-Pandharipande. In this paper, we consider curve counting invariants of $X$ using Hilbert schemes of curves and conjecture a DT/PT correspondence which relates these to stable pair invariants of $X$. After providing evidence in the compact case, we define analogous invariants for toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds using a localization formula. We formulate a vertex formalism for both…
We show how an F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau (n+1)-fold in appropriate weak coupling limit reduces formally to an orientifold of type IIB theory compactified on an auxiliary complex n-fold. In some cases (but not always) if the original (n+1)-fold is singular, then the auxiliary n-fold is also singular. We illustrate this by analysing F-theory on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds on base $F_n$.
We present an exhaustive, constructive, classification of the Calabi-Yau four-folds which can be described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. A comprehensive list of 921,497 configuration matrices which represent all topologically distinct types of complete intersection Calabi-Yau four-folds is provided and can be downloaded at http://www-thphys.physics.ox.ac.uk/projects/CalabiYau/Cicy4folds/index.html . The manifolds have non-negative Euler characteristics in the range 0 - 2610. This data set will be of use in a wide range of physical and mathematical applications. Ne…
We study stringy modifications of $T^3$-fibered manifolds, where the fiber undergoes a monodromy in the T-duality group. We determine the fibration data defining such T-folds from a geometric model, by using a map between the duality group and the group of large diffeomorphisms of a four-torus. We describe the monodromies induced around duality defects where such fibrations degenerate and we argue that local solutions receive corrections from the winding sector, dual to the symmetry-breaking modes that correct semi-flat metrics.
The theory of stable pairs in the derived category yields an enumerative geometry of curves in 3-folds. We evaluate the equivariant vertex for stable pairs on toric 3-folds in terms of weighted box counting. In the toric Calabi-Yau case, the result simplifies to a new form of pure box counting. The conjectural equivalence with the DT vertex predicts remarkable identities. The equivariant vertex governs primary insertions in the theory of stable pairs for toric varieties. We consider also the descendent vertex and conjecture the complete rationality of the descendent theory for stable pairs.
We consider an SO(10) GUT model from F-theory compactified on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau with a D5 singularity. To obtain the matter curves and the Yukawa couplings, we use a global description to resolve the singularity. We identify the vector and spinor matter representations and their Yukawa couplings and we explicitly build the G-fluxes in the global model and check the agreement with the semi-local results. As our bundle is of type SU(2k), some extra conditions need to be applied to match the fluxes.

We make a proposal for calculating refined Gopakumar-Vafa numbers (GVN) on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds based on refined holomorphic anomaly equations. The key examples are smooth elliptic fibrations over (almost) Fano surfaces. We include a detailed review of existing mathematical methods towards defining and calculating the (unrefined) Gopakumar-Vafa invariants (GVI) and the GVNs on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds using moduli of stable sheaves, in a language that should be accessible to physicists. In particular, we discuss the dependence of the GVNs on the complex structure moduli an…
We study the structure of gauge and gravitational anomalies in 2d N=(0,2) theories obtained by compactification of F-theory on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 5-folds. Abelian gauge anomalies, induced at 1-loop in perturbation theory, are cancelled by a generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism operating at the level of chiral scalar fields in the 2d supergravity theory. We derive closed expressions for the gravitational and the non-abelian and abelian gauge anomalies including the Green-Schwarz counterterms. These expressions involve topological invariants of the underlying elliptic fibration and t…
We study four-dimensional heterotic flux vacua with N=2 spacetime supersymmetry. A worldsheet perspective is used to clarify quantization conditions associated to the fluxes and the constraints these place on the moduli spaces of resulting compactifications. We propose that these vacua fit naturally in the context of heterotic/IIA duality as heterotic duals to compactifications on K3-fibered but not elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau three-folds. We present some examples of such potential dual pairs.
We give evidence that the all genus amplitudes of topological string theory on compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds can be written in terms of meromorphic Jacobi forms whose weight grows linearly and whose index grows quadratically with the base degree. The denominators of these forms have a simple universal form with the property that the poles of the meromorphic form lie only at torsion points. The modular parameter corresponds to the fibre class while the role of the string coupling is played by the elliptic parameter. This leads to very strong all genus results on these geomet…
We derive four dimensional gauge theories with exceptional groups $F_4$, $E_8$, $E_7$, and $E_7$ with matter, by starting from the duality between the heterotic string on $K3$ and F-theory on a elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold. This configuration is compactified to four dimensions on a torus, and by employing toric geometry, we compute the type IIB mirrors of the Calabi-Yaus of the type IIA string theory. We identify the Seiberg-Witten curves describing the gauge theories as ALE spaces fibered over a $P^1$ base.
Let X be a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, T=D^b(coh(X)) the derived category of coherent sheaves on X, and Stab(T) the complex manifold of Bridgeland stability conditions Z on T. It is conjectured that one can define rational numbers J^a(Z) for Z in Stab(T) and a in the numerical Grothendieck group K(T) generalizing Donaldson-Thomas invariants, which `count' Z-semistable (complexes of) coherent sheaves on X in class a, and whose transformation law under change of Z is known. This paper explains how to combine such invariants J^a(Z), if they exist, into a family of holomorphic generating functions F^a:Stab…
There is a strong analogy between compact, torsion-free $G_2$-manifolds $(X,φ,*φ)$ and Calabi-Yau 3-folds $(Y,J,g,ω)$. We can also generalize $(X,φ,*φ)$ to 'tamed almost $G_2$-manifolds' $(X,φ,ψ)$, where we compare $φ$ with $ω$ and $ψ$ with $J$. Associative 3-folds in $X$, a special kind of minimal submanifold, are analogous to $J$-holomorphic curves in $Y$. Several areas of Symplectic Geometry -- Gromov-Witten theory, Quantum Cohomology, Lagrangian Floer cohomology, Fukaya categories -- are built using 'counts' of moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic curves in $Y$, but give an answer depending on…
We prove the elliptic transformation law of Jacobi forms for the generating series of Pandharipande--Thomas invariants of an elliptic Calabi--Yau 3-fold over a reduced class in the base. This proves part of a conjecture by Huang, Katz, and Klemm. For the proof we construct an involution of the derived category and use wall-crossing methods. We express the generating series of PT invariants in terms of low genus Gromov--Witten invariants and universal Jacobi forms. As applications we prove new formulas and recover several known formulas for the PT invariants of $\mathrm{K3} \times E$, abelian 3…
We investigate the mathematical properties of the class of Calabi-Yau four-folds recently found in [arXiv:1303.1832]. This class consists of 921,497 configuration matrices which correspond to manifolds that are described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. For each manifold in the list, we compute the full Hodge diamond as well as additional topological invariants such as Chern classes and intersection numbers. Using this data, we conclude that there are at least 36,779 topologically distinct manifolds in our list. We also study the fibration structure of these manifold…
We study the relation between the instanton counting on ALE spaces and the BPS state counting on a toric Calabi-Yau three-fold. We put a single D4-brane on a divisor isomorphic to A_{N-1}-ALE space in the Calabi-Yau three-fold, and evaluate the discrete changes of BPS partition function of D4-D2-D0 states in the wall-crossing phenomena. In particular, we find that the character of affine SU(N) algebra naturally arises in wall-crossings of D4-D2-D0 states. Our analysis is completely based on the wall-crossing formula for the d=4, N=2 supersymmetric theory obtained by dimensionally reducing the …
On promoting the type IIA side of the N=1 Heterotic/type IIA dual pairs of [1] to M-theory on a `barely G_2 Manifold' of [2], by spectrum-matching we show a possible triality between Heterotic on a self-mirror Calabi-Yau, M-theory on the above `barely G_2-Manifold' constructed from the Calabi-Yau on the type IIA side and $F$-theory on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-fold fibered over a trivially rationally ruled CP^1 x E base, E being the Enriques surface. We raise an apparent puzzle on the F-theory side, namely, the Hodge data of the 4-fold derived can not be obtained by a naive freely a…
We discuss how to obtain an N=(2,2) supersymmetric SU(3) gauge theory in two dimensions via geometric engineering from a Calabi-Yau 4-fold and compute its non-perturbative twisted chiral potential. The relevant compact part of the 4-fold geometry consists of two intersecting P^1's fibered over P^2. The rigid limit of the local mirror of this geometry is a complex surface that generalizes the Seiberg-Witten curve and on which there exist two holomorphic 2-forms. These stem from the same meromorphic 2-form as derivatives w.r.t. the two moduli, respectively. The middle periods of this meromorphic…
We show how certain non-perturbative superpotentials W, which are the two-dimensional analogs of the Seiberg-Witten prepotential in 4d, can be computed via geometric engineering from 4-folds. We analyze an explicit example for which the relevant compact geometry of the 4-fold is given by $P^1$ fibered over $P^2$. In the field theory limit, this gives an effective U(1) gauge theory with N=(2,2) supersymmetry in two dimensions. We find that the analog of the SW curve is a K3 surface, and that the complex FI coupling is given by the modular parameter of this surface. The FI potential itself coinc…
This talk adapts the available formalism to study a class of heterotic M-theory vacua with SO(10) grand unification group. Compactification to four dimensions with N = 1 supersymmetry is achieved on a torus fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold Z = X / tau_{X} with first homotopy group pi_{1}(Z) = Z_{2}. Here X is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold which admits two global sections and τ_{X} is a freely acting involution on X. The vacua in this class have net number of three generations of chiral fermions in the observable sector and may contain M5-branes in the bulk space which wrap holomorphic cur…
We consider compactifications of type II string theory in which a d-dimensional torus is fibered over a base X. In string theory, the transition functions of this fibration need not be simply diffeomorphisms of T^d but can involve elements of the T-duality group Spin(d,d,Z). We precisely define the notion of a T-fold with NSNS flux. Given such a T-fold, we define the Z_2-graded cohomology theory describing the unquantized RR field strengths and discuss how the data of a T-fold can be interpreted in terms of generalized NSNS fluxes and the twisted differential of Shelton-Taylor-Wecht.
We study a conjectural relationship among Donaldson-Thomas type invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds counting torsion sheaves supported on ample divisors, ideal sheaves of curves and Pandharipande-Thomas's stable pairs. The conjecture is a mathematical formulation of Denef-Moore's formula derived in the study of Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa's conjecture relating black hole entropy and topological string. The main result of this paper is to prove our conjecture assuming a conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality proposed by Bayer, Macri and the author.
We introduce moduli spaces of stable perverse coherent systems on small crepant resolutions of Calabi-Yau 3-folds and consider their Donaldson-Thomas type counting invariants. The stability depends on the choice of a component (= a chamber) in the complement of finitely many lines (= walls) in the plane. We determine all walls and compute generating functions of invariants for all choices of chambers when the Calabi-Yau is the resolved conifold. For suitable choices of chambers, our invariants are specialized to Donaldson-Thomas, Pandharipande-Thomas and Szendroi invariants.
In this paper, we propose a mathematical definition of a new ``numerical invariants" of Calabi--Yau 3-folds from stable sheaves of dimension one, which is motivated by the Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture in M-theory. Moreover, we show that for any projective morphism $f:X -> Y$ of normal projective varieties, there exists a natural $sl_2 \times sl_2$ action on the intersection cohomology group $IH(X, \Q)$ which fits into the perverse Leray spectral sequence.
We apply the modular approach to computing the topological string partition function on non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds with higher Kodaira singularities in the fiber. The approach consists in making an ansatz for the partition function at given base degree, exact in all fiber classes to arbitrary order and to all genus, in terms of a rational function of weak Jacobi forms. Our results yield, at given base degree, the elliptic genus of the corresponding non-critical 6d string, and thus the associated BPS invariants of the 6d theory. The required elliptic indices are determi…
The SO(10) embedding of the Standard Model spectrum is supported by evidence for neutrino masses. This thesis adapts the available formalism to study a class of heterotic M-theory vacua with SO(10) grand unification group. Compactification to four dimensions with N = 1 supersymmetry is achieved on a torus fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold Z = X / tau_{X} with first homotopy group pi_{1}(Z) = Z_{2}. Here X is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold which admits two global sections and tau_{X} is a freely acting involution on X. The vacua in this class have net number of three generations of chiral fe…
Fix a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ satisfying the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda, such as the quintic 3-fold. By two different wall-crossing arguments we prove two different explicit formulae relating rank 0 Donaldson-Thomas invariants (counting torsion sheaves on $X$ supported on ample divisors) in terms of rank 1 Donaldson-Thomas invariants (counting ideal sheaves of curves) and Pandharipande-Thomas invariants. In particular, we prove a slight modification of Toda's formulation of OSV conjecture for $X$. When $X$ is of Picard rank one, we also give an explicit formula for rank tw…
We attempt to define a new invariant I of (almost) Calabi-Yau 3-folds M, by counting special Lagrangian rational homology 3-spheres N in M in each 3-homology class, with a certain weight w(N) depending on the topology of N. This is motivated by the Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic manifold, which count the J-holomorphic curves in each 2-homology class. In order for this invariant to be interesting, it should either be unchanged by deformations of the underlying (almost) Calabi-Yau structure, or else transform according to some rigid set of rules as the periods of the almost Calabi-Yau …
F-theory compactified on singular, elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau five-folds gives rise to two-dimensional gauge theories preserving N=(0,2) supersymmetry. In this paper we initiate the study of such compactifications and determine the dictionary between the geometric data of the elliptic fibration and the 2d gauge theory such as the matter content in terms of (0,2) superfields and their supersymmetric couplings. We study this setup both from a gauge-theoretic point of view, in terms of the partially twisted 7-brane theory, and provide a global geometric description based on the structure of …
Let $X$ be a Calabi-Yau 4-fold and $D$ a smooth divisor on it. We consider tautological complex associated with $L=\mathcal{O}_X(D)$ on the moduli space of Le Potier stable pairs and define its counting invariant by integrating the Euler class against the virtual class. We conjecture a formula for their generating series expressed using genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of $D$ and genus one Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of $X$, which we verify in several examples. When $X$ is the local resolved conifold, our conjecture reproduces a conjectural formula of Cao-Kool-Monavari in the PT chamber…
Symmetric vacua of heterotic M-theory, characterized by vanishing cohomology classes of individual sources in the three-form Bianchi identity, are analyzed on smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds. We show that such vacua do not exist for elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau spaces. However, explicit examples are found for Calabi-Yau three-folds arising as intersections in both unweighted and weighted projective space. We show that such symmetric vacua can be combined with attractive phenomenological features such as three generations of quarks and leptons. Properties of the low energy effective actions as…
We review the spectral cover formalism for constructing both U(n) and SU(n) holomorphic vector bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau three-folds which admit a section. We discuss the allowed bases of these three-folds and show that physical constraints eliminate Enriques surfaces from consideration. Relevant properties of the remaining del Pezzo and Hirzebruch surfaces are presented. Restricting the structure group to SU(n), we derive, in detail, a set of rules for the construction of three-family particle physics theories with phenomenologically relevant gauge groups. We show that anomal…
For a nonsingular projective 3-fold $X$, we define integer invariants virtually enumerating pairs $(C,D)$ where $C\subset X$ is an embedded curve and $D\subset C$ is a divisor. A virtual class is constructed on the associated moduli space by viewing a pair as an object in the derived category of $X$. The resulting invariants are conjecturally equivalent, after universal transformations, to both the Gromov-Witten and DT theories of $X$. For Calabi-Yau 3-folds, the latter equivalence should be viewed as a wall-crossing formula in the derived category. Several calculations of the new invariants a…
In this work we study F-theory compactifications on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau n-folds which have $\mathbb{P}^1$-fibered base manifolds. Such geometries, which we study in both 4- and 6-dimensions, are both ubiquitous within the set of Calabi-Yau manifolds and play a crucial role in heterotic/F-theory duality. We discuss the most general formulation of $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles of this type, as well as fibrations which degenerate at higher codimension loci. In the course of this study, we find a number of new phenomena. For example, in both 4- and 6-dimensions we find transitions whereby the…
We use local mirror symmetry in type IIA string compactifications on Calabi-Yau n+1 folds $X_{n+1}$ to construct vector bundles on (possibly singular) elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau n-folds Z_n. The interpretation of these data as valid classical solutions of the heterotic string compactified on Z_n proves F-theory/heterotic duality at the classical level. Toric geometry is used to establish a systematic dictionary that assigns to each given toric n+1-fold $X_{n+1}$ a toric n fold Z_n together with a specific family of sheafs on it. This allows for a systematic construction of phenomenologica…
We show how certain F^4 couplings in eight dimensions can be computed using the mirror map and K3 data. They perfectly match with the corresponding heterotic one-loop couplings, and therefore this amounts to a successful test of the conjectured duality between the heterotic string on T^2 and F-theory on K3. The underlying quantum geometry appears to be a 5-fold, consisting of a hyperk"ahler 4-fold fibered over a IP^1 base. The natural candidate for this fiber is the symmetric product Sym^2(K3). We are lead to this structure by analyzing the implications of higher powers of E_2 in the relevant …
We briefly review the formal picture in which a Calabi-Yau $n$-fold is the complex analogue of an oriented real $n$-manifold, and a Fano with a fixed smooth anticanonical divisor is the analogue of a manifold with boundary, motivating a holomorphic Casson invariant counting bundles on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We develop the deformation theory necessary to obtain the virtual moduli cycles of \cite{LT}, \cite{BF} in moduli spaces of stable sheaves whose higher obstruction groups vanish. This gives, for instance, virtual moduli cycles in Hilbert schemes of curves in $\Pee^3$, and Donaldson-- and Grom…
Recent advances in 11 dimensional Horava-Witten M-theory based on non-standard embeddings with torus fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds have allowed the construction of three generation models with Wilson line breaking to the Standard Model gauge symmetry. Central to these constructions is the existence of a set of 5-branes in the bulk. We examine within this framework the general structure of the matter Yukawa couplings and show that M-theory offers an alternate possible way of achieving the CKM and quark mass hierarchies without introducing undue fine tuning or (as in conventional analysis) small …
We describe eight-dimensional vacuum configurations with varying moduli consistent with the U-duality group $SL(2,Z) \times SL(3,Z)$. Focusing on the latter less-well understood SL(3,Z) properties, we construct a class of fivebrane solutions living on lines on a three-dimensional base space. The resulting U-manifolds, with five scalars transforming under SL(3), admit a Ricci-flat Kahler metric. Based on the connection with special lagrangian $T^3$ fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds, this construction provides a simple framework for the investigation of Calabi-Yau mirrors.
