We briefly review the formal picture in which a Calabi-Yau $n$-fold is the complex analogue of an oriented real $n$-manifold, and a Fano with a fixed smooth anticanonical divisor is the analogue of a manifold with boundary, motivating a holomorphic Casson invariant counting bundles on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We develop the deformation theory necessary to obtain the virtual moduli cycles of \cite{LT}, \cite{BF} in moduli spaces of stable sheaves whose higher obstruction groups vanish. This gives, for instance, virtual moduli cycles in Hilbert schemes of curves in $\Pee^3$, and Donaldson-- and Gromov-Witten-- like invariants of Fano 3-folds. It also allows us to define the holomorphic Casson invariant of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$, prove it is deformation invariant, and compute it explicitly in some examples. Then we calculate moduli spaces of sheaves on a general $K3$ fibration $X$, enabling us to compute the invariant for some ranks and Chern classes, and equate it to Gromov-Witten invariants of the ``Mukai-dual'' 3-fold for others. As an example the invariant is shown to distinguish Gross' diffeomorphic 3-folds. Finally the Mukai-dual 3-fold is shown to be Calabi-Yau and its cohomology is related to that of $X$.
For complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds in toric varieties, Gross and Haase-Zharkov have given a conjectural combinatorial description of the special Lagrangian torus fibrations whose existence was predicted by Strominger, Yau and Zaslow. We present a geometric version of this construction, generalizing an earlier conjecture of the first author.
We systematically analyze the fibration structure of toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau threefolds with large and small Hodge numbers. We show that there are only four such Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h^{1, 1} \geq 140$ or $h^{2, 1} \geq 140$ that do not have manifest elliptic or genus one fibers arising from a fibration of the associated 4D polytope. There is a genus one fibration whenever either Hodge number is 150 or greater, and an elliptic fibration when either Hodge number is 228 or greater. We find that for small $h^{1, 1}$ the fraction of polytopes in the KS database that do not have a genu…
We find through a systematic analysis that all but 29,223 of the 473.8 million 4D reflexive polytopes found by Kreuzer and Skarke have a 2D reflexive subpolytope. Such a subpolytope is generally associated with the presence of an elliptic or genus one fibration in the corresponding birational equivalence class of Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends the growing body of evidence that most Calabi-Yau threefolds have an elliptically fibered phase.
We consider regular Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in $N$-dimensional smooth toric varieties. On such a hypersurface in the neighborhood of the large complex structure limit point we construct a fibration over a sphere $S^{N-1}$ whose generic fibers are tori $T^{N-1}$. Also for certain one-parameter families of such hypersurfaces we show that the monodromy transformation is induced by a translation of the $T^{N-1}$ fibration by a section. Finally we construct a dual fibration and provide some evidence that it describes the mirror family.
We consider the construction of Calabi-Yau varieties recently generalized to where the defining equations may have negative degrees over some projective space factors in the embedding space. Within such "generalized complete intersection" Calabi-Yau ("gCICY") three-folds, we find several sequences of distinct manifolds. These include both novel elliptic and K3-fibrations and involve Hirzebruch surfaces and their higher dimensional analogues. En route, we generalize the standard techniques of cohomology computation to these generalized complete intersection Calabi-Yau varieties.
In this article we discuss some numerical parts of the mirror conjecture. For any 3 - dimensional Calabi - Yau manifold author introduces a generalization of the Casson invariant known in 3 - dimensional geometry, which is called Casson - Donaldson invariant. In the framework of the mirror relationship it corresponds to the number of SpLag cycles which are Bohr - Sommerfeld with respect to the given polarization. To compute the Casson - Donaldson invariant the author uses well known in classical algebraic geometry degeneration principle. By it, when the given Calabi - Yau manifold is deformed …
We study the limit of Calabi-Yau modular forms, and in particular, those resulting in classical modular forms. We then study two parameter families of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds and describe the modular forms arising from the degeneracy loci. In the case of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds our approach gives a mathematical proof of many observations about modularity properties of topological string amplitudes starting with the work of Candelas, Font, Katz and Morrison. In the case of Calabi-Yau fourfolds we derive new identities not computed before.
A homogeneous roof is a rational homogeneous variety of Picard rank 2 and index $r$ equipped with two different $\mathbb P^{r-1}$-bundle structures. We consider bundles of homogeneous roofs over a smooth projective variety, formulating a relative version of the duality of Calabi--Yau pairs associated to roofs of projective bundles. We discuss how derived equivalence of such pairs can lift to Calabi--Yau fibrations, extending a result of Bridgeland and Maciocia to higher-dimensional cases. We formulate an approach to prove that the $DK$-conjecture holds for a class of simple $K$-equivalent maps…
We investigate the mathematical properties of the class of Calabi-Yau four-folds recently found in [arXiv:1303.1832]. This class consists of 921,497 configuration matrices which correspond to manifolds that are described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. For each manifold in the list, we compute the full Hodge diamond as well as additional topological invariants such as Chern classes and intersection numbers. Using this data, we conclude that there are at least 36,779 topologically distinct manifolds in our list. We also study the fibration structure of these manifold…
Let $B$ be a smooth projective surface, and $\mathcal{L}$ an ample line bundle on $B$. The aim of this parer is to study the families of elliptic Calabi--Yau threefolds sitting in the bundle $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{L}^a \oplus \mathcal{L}^b \oplus \mathcal{O}_B)$ as anticanonical divisors. We will show that the number of such families is finite.
We consider fibrations by abelian surfaces and K3 surfaces over a one dimensional base that are Calabi-Yau and we obtain dual fibrations that are derived equivalent to the original fibration. Finally, we relate the problem to mirror symmetry.
During the last years we have generated a large number of data related to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties which can be described by reflexive polyhedra. We classified all reflexive polyhedra in three dimensions leading to K3 hypersurfaces and have nearly completed the four dimensional case relevant to Calabi-Yau threefolds. In addition, we have analysed for many of the resulting spaces whether they allow fibration structures of the types that are relevant in the context of superstring dualities. In this survey we want to give background information both on how we obtained these dat…
We find that for many Calabi-Yau threefolds with elliptic or genus one fibrations mirror symmetry factorizes between the fiber and the base of the fibration. In the simplest examples, the generic CY elliptic fibration over any toric base surface $B$ that supports an elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold has a mirror that is an elliptic fibration over a dual toric base surface $\tilde{B}$ that is related through toric geometry to the line bundle $-6K_B$. The Kreuzer-Skarke database includes all these examples and gives a wide range of other more complicated constructions where mirror symmetry also fact…
In this paper, we describe the spaces of stability conditions for the triangulated categories associated to three dimensional Calabi-Yau fibrations. We deal with two cases, the flat elliptic fibrations and smooth K3 (Abelian) fibrations. In the first case, we will see there exist chamber structures similar to those of the movable cone used in birational geometry. In the second case, we will compare the space with the space of stability conditions for the closed fiber of the fibration.
We study the quasimap invariants of elliptic and K3 fibrations. Oberdieck and Pixton conjectured that the Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic fibrations are quasi-modular forms. Analogously, we propose similar conjecture for the quasimap potentials of elliptic fibrations. We also conjecture some finite generation properties of quasimap potentials of K3 fibrations. Via wall-crossing conjecture, this will imply some quasi-modularity of the Gromov-Witten potentials of K3 fibrations. We provide some evidences for our conjectures through several examples. The method here can be further generalized…
We investigate the delicate interplay between the types of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations of Calabi-Yau threefolds (used to formulate F-theory) and the "matter" representation of the associated Lie algebra. The main tool is the analysis and the appropriate interpretation of the anomaly formula for six-dimensional supersymmetric theories. We find that this anomaly formula is geometrically captured by a relation among codimension two cycles on the base of the elliptic fibration, and that this relation holds for elliptic fibrations of any dimension. We introduce a "Tate cycle" which effic…
In this paper we study boundedness properties and singularities of log Calabi-Yau fibrations, particularly those admitting Fano type structures. A log Calabi-Yau fibration roughly consists of a pair $(X,B)$ with good singularities and a projective morphism $X\to Z$ such that $K_X+B$ is numerically trivial over $Z$. This class includes many central ingredients of birational geometry such as Calabi-Yau and Fano varieties and also fibre spaces of such varieties, flipping and divisorial contractions, crepant models, germs of singularities, etc.
We study sections of a Calabi-Yau threefold fibered over a curve by K3 surfaces. We show that there exist infinitely many isolated sections on certain K3 fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds and the subgroup of the Néron-Severi group generated by these sections is not finitely generated. This also gives examples of K3 surfaces over the function field F of a complex curve with Zariski dense F-rational points, whose geometric model is Calabi-Yau.
(1,d)-polarized abelian surfaces in P^(d-1) with two plane cubic curve fibrations lie in two elliptic P^2-scrolls. The union of these scrolls form a reducible Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this paper we show that this occurs when d<10 and analyse the family of such surfaces and 3-folds in detail when d=6. In particular, the reducible Calabi-Yau 3-folds deform in that case to irreducible ones with non-normal singularities.
Special fibrations of toric varieties have been used by physicists, e.g. the school of Candelas, to construct dual pairs in the study of Het/F-theory duality. Motivated by this, we investigate in this paper the details of toric morphisms between toric varieties. In particular, a complete toric description of fibers - both generic and non-generic -, image, and the flattening stratification of a toric morphism are given. Two examples are provided to illustrate the discussions. We then turn to the study of the restriction of a toric morphism to a toric hypersurface. The details of this can be und…
We prove a structure theorem for the Albanese maps of varieties with Q-linearly trivial log canonical divisors. Our start point is the action of a nonlinear algebraic group on a projective variety.

This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0205321 where we have built a combinatorial model for the torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. This part addresses the connection between the model torus fibration and the complex and Kähler geometry of the hypersurfaces.
This is an expository article on the Gross--Siebert approach to mirror symmetry and its interactions with the Strominger--Yau--Zaslow conjecture from a topological perspective.
We discuss various topics on degenerations and special Lagrangian torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau manifolds in the context of mirror symmetry. A particular emphasis is on Tyurin degenerations and the Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture, which builds a bridge between mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds and that for quasi-Fano manifolds. The proof of the conjecture is of interest in its own right and leads us to a few other related topics such as SYZ mirror symmetry, theta functions and geometric quantization. Inspired by the conjecture, we also propose a new construction of Landau-Ginzburg mod…
In this paper we give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibration for Calabi-Yau hypersurface in toric variety via the method of gradient flow. Using our construction of Lagrangian torus fibration, we are able to prove the symplectic topological version of SYZ mirror conjecture for generic Calabi-Yau hypersurface in toric variety. We will also be able to give precise formulation of SYZ mirror conjecture in general (including singular locus and duality of singular fibres).
We describe in purely combinatorial terms dual pairs of integral affine structures on spheres which come from the conjectural metric collapse of mirror families of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. The same structures arise on the base of a special Lagrangian torus fibration in the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. We study the topological torus fibration in the large complex structure limit and show that it coincides with our combinatorial model.
We compare the sets of Calabi-Yau threefolds with large Hodge numbers that are constructed using toric hypersurface methods with those can be constructed as elliptic fibrations using Weierstrass model techniques motivated by F-theory. There is a close correspondence between the structure of "tops" in the toric polytope construction and Tate form tunings of Weierstrass models for elliptic fibrations. We find that all of the Hodge number pairs ($h^{1, 1},h^{2, 1}$) with $h^{1,1}$ or $h^{2, 1}\geq 240$ that are associated with threefolds in the Kreuzer-Skarke database can be realized explicitly b…
We present a general scheme for identifying fibrations in the framework of toric geometry and provide a large list of weights for Calabi--Yau 4-folds. We find 914,164 weights with degree $d\le150$ whose maximal Newton polyhedra are reflexive and 525,572 weights with degree $d\le4000$ that give rise to weighted projective spaces such that the polynomial defining a hypersurface of trivial canonical class is transversal. We compute all Hodge numbers, using Batyrev's formulas (derived by toric methods) for the first and Vafa's fomulas (obtained by counting of Ramond ground states in N=2 LG models)…

In this article we construct Lagrangian torus fibrations for general quintic \cy hypersurfaces near the large complex limit and their mirror manifolds using gradient flow method. Then we prove the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror conjecture for this class of \cy manifolds in symplectic category.
In this paper we give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibration for Fermat type quintic \cy hypersurfaces via the method of gradient flow. We also compute the monodromy of the expected special Lagrangian torus fibration and discuss structures of singular fibers.
In this paper we study compactifications of the ${\cal N}=2$ heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ string on $(K3\times T^2)/\mathbb{Z}_3$ with various gauge backgrounds and calculate the topological couplings in the effective supergravity action that arise from one-loop amplitudes. We then identify candidates for dual type IIA compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds and compare the heterotic results with the corresponding topological string amplitudes. We find that the dual Calabi-Yau geometries are $K3$ fibrations that are also genus one fibered with three-sections. Moreover, we show that the interse…
In this paper we are interested in the isotopy classes of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a fixed symplectic rational surface. We give several equivalent definitions and prove the stability, finiteness and rigidity results. Motivated by the problem of counting toric actions, we obtain a general counting formula of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a restrictive region of $c_1$-nef cone. A detailed count in the case of 2- and 3-point blow-ups of complex projective space for all symplectic forms is also given. In our framework the complexity of the combinatorics of analyzing Delzant po…
We study the birational boundedness of special fibers of log Calabi-Yau fibrations and Fano fibrations. We show that for a locally stable family of Fano varieties or polarised log Calabi-Yau pairs over a curve, if the general fiber satisfies some natural boundedness conditions, then every irreducible component of the special fiber is birationally bounded.
In previous work, it was argued that the type IIB T^6/Z_2 orientifold with a choice of flux preserving N=2 supersymmetry is dual to a class of purely geometric type IIA compactifications on abelian surface (T^4) fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. We provide two explicit constructions of the resulting Calabi-Yau duals. The first is a monodromy based description, analogous to F-theory encoding of Calabi-Yau geometry via 7-branes and string junctions, except for T^4 rather than T^2 fibers. The second is an explicit algebro-geometric construction in which the T^4 fibers arise as the Jacobian tori of a…
We investigate a potential relationship between mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds and the mirror duality between quasi-Fano varieties and Landau-Ginzburg models. More precisely, we show that if a Calabi-Yau admits a so-called Tyurin degeneration to a union of two Fano varieties, then one should be able to construct a mirror to that Calabi-Yau by gluing together the Landau-Ginzburg models of those two Fano varieties. We provide evidence for this correspondence in a number of different settings, including Batyrev-Borisov mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds, Dolgachev…
We present a novel way to classify Calabi-Yau threefolds by systematically studying their infinite volume limits. Each such limit is at infinite distance in Kahler moduli space and can be classified by an associated limiting mixed Hodge structure. We then argue that the such structures are labeled by a finite number of degeneration types that combine into a characteristic degeneration pattern associated to the underlying Calabi-Yau threefold. These patterns provide a new invariant way to present crucial information encoded in the intersection numbers of Calabi-Yau threefolds. For each pattern,…
In this note we show that if a compact Kahler manifold with trivial canonical bundle is the total space of a holomorphic fibration without singular fibers, then the fibration is a holomorphic fiber bundle. In the algebraic case, the fibration becomes trivial after a finite base change.
We consider Calabi--Yau 3-folds of Borcea--Voisin type, i.e. Calabi--Yau 3-folds obtained as crepant resolutions of a quotient $(S\times E)/(α_S\times α_E)$, where $S$ is a K3 surface, $E$ is an elliptic curve, $α_S\in {\rm Aut} (S)$ and $α_E\in {\rm Aut}(E)$ act on the period of $S$ and $E$ respectively with order $n=2,3,4,6$. The case $n=2$ is very classical, the case $n=3$ was recently studied by Rohde, the other cases are less known. First we construct explicitly a crepant resolution, $X$, of $(S\times E)/(α_S\times α_E)$ and we compute its Hodge numbers; some pairs of Hodge numbers we fou…

We construct stable sheaves over K3 fibrations using a relative Fourier-Mukai transform which describes the sheaves in terms of spectral data similar to the construction for elliptic fibrations. On K3 fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds we show that the Fourier-Mukai transform induces an embedding ion of the relative Jacobian of spectral line bundles on spectral covers into the moduli space of sheaves of given invariants. This makes the moduli space of spectral sheaves to a generic torus fibration over the moduli space of curves of given arithmetic genus on the Calabi-Yau manifold.
In part I of this paper we constructed certain fibered Calabi-Yaus by a quotient construction in the context of weighted hypersurfaces. In this paper look at the case of K3 fibrations more closely and study the singular fibers which occur. This differs from previous work since the fibrations we discuss have constant modulus, and the singular fibers have torsion monodromy.
In this paper, we apply Borcea--Voisin's construction and give new examples of Calabi--Yau fourfolds $Y$, which admit an elliptic fibration onto a smooth threefold $V$, whose singular fibers of type $I_5$ lie above a del Pezzo surface $dP \subset V$. These are relevant models for F-theory according to papers by C. Beasley, J. J. Heckman, C. Vafa. Moreover, at the end of the paper we will give the explicit equations of some of these Calabi--Yau fourfolds and their fibrations.
We present a novel technique to obtain base independent expressions for the matter loci of fibrations of complete intersection Calabi-Yau onefolds in toric ambient spaces. These can be used to systematically construct elliptically and genus one fibered Calabi-Yau $d$-folds that lead to desired gauge groups and spectra in F-theory. The technique, which we refer to as GV-spectroscopy, is based on the calculation of fiber Gopakumar-Vafa invariants using the Batyrev-Borisov construction of mirror pairs and application of the so-called Frobenius method to the data of a parametrized auxiliary polyto…
