We consider regular Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in $N$-dimensional smooth toric varieties. On such a hypersurface in the neighborhood of the large complex structure limit point we construct a fibration over a sphere $S^{N-1}$ whose generic fibers are tori $T^{N-1}$. Also for certain one-parameter families of such hypersurfaces we show that the monodromy transformation is induced by a translation of the $T^{N-1}$ fibration by a section. Finally we construct a dual fibration and provide some evidence that it describes the mirror family.
We show that "non-polynomial" deformations of semiample (minimal) nondegenerate Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties can be realized as quasismooth complete intersections in higher dimensional simplicial toric varieties.
For complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds in toric varieties, Gross and Haase-Zharkov have given a conjectural combinatorial description of the special Lagrangian torus fibrations whose existence was predicted by Strominger, Yau and Zaslow. We present a geometric version of this construction, generalizing an earlier conjecture of the first author.
The 102581 flat toric elliptic fibrations over P^2 are identified among the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces that arise from the 473800776 reflexive 4-dimensional polytopes. In order to analyze their elliptic fibration structure, we describe the precise relation between the lattice polytope and the elliptic fibration. The fiber-divisor-graph is introduced as a way to visualize the embedding of the Kodaira fibers in the ambient toric fiber. In particular in the case of non-split discriminant components, this description is far more accurate than previous studies. The discriminant locus and Kodaria fibe…
There are easy "polynomial" deformations of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties performed by changing the coefficients of the defining polynomial of the hypersurface. In this paper, we explicitly constructed the ``non-polynomial'' deformations of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, which arise from deformations of the ambient toric variety.
We systematically analyze the fibration structure of toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau threefolds with large and small Hodge numbers. We show that there are only four such Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h^{1, 1} \geq 140$ or $h^{2, 1} \geq 140$ that do not have manifest elliptic or genus one fibers arising from a fibration of the associated 4D polytope. There is a genus one fibration whenever either Hodge number is 150 or greater, and an elliptic fibration when either Hodge number is 228 or greater. We find that for small $h^{1, 1}$ the fraction of polytopes in the KS database that do not have a genu…
We show that equivariant elliptic genera of toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds are generalized weak Jacobi forms. We also introduce a notion of averaged equivariant elliptic genera of toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds, and show that they are ordinary weak Jacobi forms given by an explicit formula predicted by Eguchi and Sugawara.
We find through a systematic analysis that all but 29,223 of the 473.8 million 4D reflexive polytopes found by Kreuzer and Skarke have a 2D reflexive subpolytope. Such a subpolytope is generally associated with the presence of an elliptic or genus one fibration in the corresponding birational equivalence class of Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends the growing body of evidence that most Calabi-Yau threefolds have an elliptically fibered phase.
Special fibrations of toric varieties have been used by physicists, e.g. the school of Candelas, to construct dual pairs in the study of Het/F-theory duality. Motivated by this, we investigate in this paper the details of toric morphisms between toric varieties. In particular, a complete toric description of fibers - both generic and non-generic -, image, and the flattening stratification of a toric morphism are given. Two examples are provided to illustrate the discussions. We then turn to the study of the restriction of a toric morphism to a toric hypersurface. The details of this can be und…
We consider the construction of Calabi-Yau varieties recently generalized to where the defining equations may have negative degrees over some projective space factors in the embedding space. Within such "generalized complete intersection" Calabi-Yau ("gCICY") three-folds, we find several sequences of distinct manifolds. These include both novel elliptic and K3-fibrations and involve Hirzebruch surfaces and their higher dimensional analogues. En route, we generalize the standard techniques of cohomology computation to these generalized complete intersection Calabi-Yau varieties.
We study the limit of Calabi-Yau modular forms, and in particular, those resulting in classical modular forms. We then study two parameter families of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds and describe the modular forms arising from the degeneracy loci. In the case of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds our approach gives a mathematical proof of many observations about modularity properties of topological string amplitudes starting with the work of Candelas, Font, Katz and Morrison. In the case of Calabi-Yau fourfolds we derive new identities not computed before.
Using Cayley trick, we define the notions of mixed toric residues and mixed Hessians associated with $r$ Laurent polynomials $f_1,...,f_r$.We conjecture that the values of mixed toric residues on the mixed Hessians are determined by mixed volumes of the Newton polytopes of $f_1,...,f_r$. Using mixed toric residues, we generalize our Toric Residue Mirror Conjecture to the case of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties obtained from nef-partitions of reflexive polytopes.
A homogeneous roof is a rational homogeneous variety of Picard rank 2 and index $r$ equipped with two different $\mathbb P^{r-1}$-bundle structures. We consider bundles of homogeneous roofs over a smooth projective variety, formulating a relative version of the duality of Calabi--Yau pairs associated to roofs of projective bundles. We discuss how derived equivalence of such pairs can lift to Calabi--Yau fibrations, extending a result of Bridgeland and Maciocia to higher-dimensional cases. We formulate an approach to prove that the $DK$-conjecture holds for a class of simple $K$-equivalent maps…
We derive the combinatorial representations of Picard group and deformation space of anti-canonical hypersurfaces of a toric variety using techniques in toric geometry. The mirror cohomology correspondence in the context of mirror symmetry is established for a pair of Calabi-Yau (CY) ${\sf n}$-spaces in toric varieties defined by reflexive polytopes for an arbitrary dimension ${\sf n}$. We further identify the Kahler cone of the toric variety and degeneration cone of CY hypersurfaces, by which the Kahler cone and degeneration cone for a mirror CY pair are interchangeable under mirror symmetry.…
Motivated by previous computations of Y. Cao, M. Kool and the author, we propose square roots and sign rules for the vertex and edge terms that compute Donaldson-Thomas invariants of a toric Calabi-Yau 4-fold, and prove that they are canonical, exploiting the combinatorics of plane and solid partitions.
We investigate the mathematical properties of the class of Calabi-Yau four-folds recently found in [arXiv:1303.1832]. This class consists of 921,497 configuration matrices which correspond to manifolds that are described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. For each manifold in the list, we compute the full Hodge diamond as well as additional topological invariants such as Chern classes and intersection numbers. Using this data, we conclude that there are at least 36,779 topologically distinct manifolds in our list. We also study the fibration structure of these manifold…
We consider fibrations by abelian surfaces and K3 surfaces over a one dimensional base that are Calabi-Yau and we obtain dual fibrations that are derived equivalent to the original fibration. Finally, we relate the problem to mirror symmetry.
During the last years we have generated a large number of data related to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties which can be described by reflexive polyhedra. We classified all reflexive polyhedra in three dimensions leading to K3 hypersurfaces and have nearly completed the four dimensional case relevant to Calabi-Yau threefolds. In addition, we have analysed for many of the resulting spaces whether they allow fibration structures of the types that are relevant in the context of superstring dualities. In this survey we want to give background information both on how we obtained these dat…
Let $B$ be a smooth projective surface, and $\mathcal{L}$ an ample line bundle on $B$. The aim of this parer is to study the families of elliptic Calabi--Yau threefolds sitting in the bundle $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{L}^a \oplus \mathcal{L}^b \oplus \mathcal{O}_B)$ as anticanonical divisors. We will show that the number of such families is finite.
We study the B-model chiral ring of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in Batyrev's mirror construction. The main result is an explicit description of a subring of the chiral ring of semiample regular (transversal to torus orbits) Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This subring includes the marginal operators and contains all information about the correlation functions used by physicists. Computation of the chiral ring passes through a description of cohomology of semiample hypersurfaces. Here, we develop the techniques for calculating of the cohomology of resolutions.
We find that for many Calabi-Yau threefolds with elliptic or genus one fibrations mirror symmetry factorizes between the fiber and the base of the fibration. In the simplest examples, the generic CY elliptic fibration over any toric base surface $B$ that supports an elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold has a mirror that is an elliptic fibration over a dual toric base surface $\tilde{B}$ that is related through toric geometry to the line bundle $-6K_B$. The Kreuzer-Skarke database includes all these examples and gives a wide range of other more complicated constructions where mirror symmetry also fact…
We identify a class of autoequivalences of triangulated categories of singularities associated with Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric varieties. Elements of this class satisfy relations that are directly linked to the toric data.
In this paper, we give a construction of the global Chern-Simons functions for toric Calabi-Yau stacks of dimension three using strong exceptional collections. The moduli spaces of sheaves on such stacks can be identified with critical loci of these functions. We give two applications of these functions. First, we prove Joyce's integrality conjecture of generalized DT invariants on local surfaces. Second, we prove a dimension reduction formula for virtual motives, which leads to two recursion formulas for motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants.
We develop a combinatorial approach to the construction of general smooth compact base surfaces that support elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends previous analyses that have relied on toric or semi-toric structure. The resulting algorithm is used to construct all classes of such base surfaces $S$ with $h^{1, 1} (S) < 8$ and all base surfaces over which there is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ with Hodge number $h^{2, 1} (X) \geq 150$. These two sets can be used todescribe all 6D F-theory models that have fewer than seven tensor multiplets or more than 150 neutral scala…
In this paper, we describe the spaces of stability conditions for the triangulated categories associated to three dimensional Calabi-Yau fibrations. We deal with two cases, the flat elliptic fibrations and smooth K3 (Abelian) fibrations. In the first case, we will see there exist chamber structures similar to those of the movable cone used in birational geometry. In the second case, we will compare the space with the space of stability conditions for the closed fiber of the fibration.
We study the quasimap invariants of elliptic and K3 fibrations. Oberdieck and Pixton conjectured that the Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic fibrations are quasi-modular forms. Analogously, we propose similar conjecture for the quasimap potentials of elliptic fibrations. We also conjecture some finite generation properties of quasimap potentials of K3 fibrations. Via wall-crossing conjecture, this will imply some quasi-modularity of the Gromov-Witten potentials of K3 fibrations. We provide some evidences for our conjectures through several examples. The method here can be further generalized…
We explain how to form a novel dataset of simply connected Calabi-Yau threefolds via the Gross-Siebert algorithm. We expect these to degenerate to Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces with certain Gorenstein (not necessarily isolated) singularities. In particular, we explain how to `smooth the boundary' of a class of $4$-dimensional reflexive polytopes to obtain a polarised tropical manifolds. We compute topological invariants of a compactified torus fibration over each such tropical manifold, expected to be homotopy equivalent to the general fibre of the Gross-Siebert smoothing. We consider a famil…
We study BPS spectra of D-branes on local Calabi-Yau threefolds $\mathcal{O}(-p)\oplus\mathcal{O}(p-2)\to \mathbb{P}^1$ with $p=0,1$, corresponding to $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ and the resolved conifold. Nonabelianization for exponential networks is applied to compute directly unframed BPS indices counting states with D2 and D0 brane charges. Known results on these BPS spectra are correctly reproduced by computing new types of BPS invariants of 3d-5d BPS states, encoded by nonabelianization, through their wall-crossing. We also develop the notion of exponential BPS graphs for the simplest …
We investigate the delicate interplay between the types of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations of Calabi-Yau threefolds (used to formulate F-theory) and the "matter" representation of the associated Lie algebra. The main tool is the analysis and the appropriate interpretation of the anomaly formula for six-dimensional supersymmetric theories. We find that this anomaly formula is geometrically captured by a relation among codimension two cycles on the base of the elliptic fibration, and that this relation holds for elliptic fibrations of any dimension. We introduce a "Tate cycle" which effic…
We generalize the toric residue mirror conjecture of Batyrev and Materov to not necessarily reflexive polytopes. Using this generalization we prove the toric residue mirror conjecture for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties.
It is known that a maximal intersection log canonical Calabi-Yau surface pair is crepant birational to a toric pair. This does not hold in higher dimension: this paper presents some examples of maximal intersection Calabi-Yau pairs that admit no toric model.
We prove a conjecture of Artur Elezi in a generalized form suggested by Givental. Namely, our main result relates genus-0 Gromov--Witten invariants of a bundle space with such invariants of the base, provided that the fiber is a toric manifold. When the base is the point, a new proof of mirror theorems by A. Givental and by H. Iritani for toric manifolds is obtained.
We briefly review the formal picture in which a Calabi-Yau $n$-fold is the complex analogue of an oriented real $n$-manifold, and a Fano with a fixed smooth anticanonical divisor is the analogue of a manifold with boundary, motivating a holomorphic Casson invariant counting bundles on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We develop the deformation theory necessary to obtain the virtual moduli cycles of \cite{LT}, \cite{BF} in moduli spaces of stable sheaves whose higher obstruction groups vanish. This gives, for instance, virtual moduli cycles in Hilbert schemes of curves in $\Pee^3$, and Donaldson-- and Grom…
We analyze B-type D-branes on noncompact toric Calabi--Yau spaces. A general program is presented to find a set of tilting line bundles that yields the associated quiver and its relations. In many cases, this set remains fixed as one moves between phases in the Kähler moduli space. This gives a particularly simple picture of how the derived category remains invariant across all phases. The combinatorial problems involving local cohomology used to determine the tilting set are also related to questions of Pi-stability as one moves between phases. As a result, in some cases precisely those line …
In this paper we study boundedness properties and singularities of log Calabi-Yau fibrations, particularly those admitting Fano type structures. A log Calabi-Yau fibration roughly consists of a pair $(X,B)$ with good singularities and a projective morphism $X\to Z$ such that $K_X+B$ is numerically trivial over $Z$. This class includes many central ingredients of birational geometry such as Calabi-Yau and Fano varieties and also fibre spaces of such varieties, flipping and divisorial contractions, crepant models, germs of singularities, etc.
Generalizing the notions of reflexive polytopes and nef-partitions of Batyrev and Borisov, we propose a mirror symmetry construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Fano toric varieties.
We study sections of a Calabi-Yau threefold fibered over a curve by K3 surfaces. We show that there exist infinitely many isolated sections on certain K3 fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds and the subgroup of the Néron-Severi group generated by these sections is not finitely generated. This also gives examples of K3 surfaces over the function field F of a complex curve with Zariski dense F-rational points, whose geometric model is Calabi-Yau.
(1,d)-polarized abelian surfaces in P^(d-1) with two plane cubic curve fibrations lie in two elliptic P^2-scrolls. The union of these scrolls form a reducible Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this paper we show that this occurs when d<10 and analyse the family of such surfaces and 3-folds in detail when d=6. In particular, the reducible Calabi-Yau 3-folds deform in that case to irreducible ones with non-normal singularities.
We compare the sets of Calabi-Yau threefolds with large Hodge numbers that are constructed using toric hypersurface methods with those can be constructed as elliptic fibrations using Weierstrass model techniques motivated by F-theory. There is a close correspondence between the structure of "tops" in the toric polytope construction and Tate form tunings of Weierstrass models for elliptic fibrations. We find that all of the Hodge number pairs ($h^{1, 1},h^{2, 1}$) with $h^{1,1}$ or $h^{2, 1}\geq 240$ that are associated with threefolds in the Kreuzer-Skarke database can be realized explicitly b…
In this paper we investigate singularities on toric fibrations. In this context we study a conjecture of Shokurov (a special case of which is due to M$^\rm{c}$Kernan) which roughly says that if $(X,B)\to Z$ is an $ε$-lc Fano type log Calabi-Yau fibration, then the singularities of the log base $(Z,B_Z+M_Z)$ are bounded in terms of $ε$ and $\dim X$ where $B_Z,M_Z$ are the discriminant and moduli divisors of the canonical bundle formula. A corollary of our main result says that if $X\to Z$ is a toric Fano fibration with $X$ being $ε$-lc, then the multiplicities of the fibres over codimension one…
We prove a structure theorem for the Albanese maps of varieties with Q-linearly trivial log canonical divisors. Our start point is the action of a nonlinear algebraic group on a projective variety.
A. Borisov classified into finitely many series the set of isomorphism classes of germs of toric $\Q$-factorial singularities, of fixed dimension and with minimal log discrepancy over the special point bounded from below by a fixed real number. We extend this classification to germs of toric Fano fibrations, possibly not $\Q$-factorial. As an application, we verify in the toric setting a conjecture proposed by V. V. Shokurov on the existence of bounded complements.
The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY $(m+2)$-folds is described by $m$-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence generalizes the connection between CY $(m+2)$-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D$(5-2m)$-branes for $m=0,\ldots,3$ to arbitrary $m$. In this paper we introduce the Calabi-Yau product, a new algorithm that starting from the known quiver theories for a pair of toric CY$_{m+2}$ and CY$_{n+2}$ produces the quiver theory for a related CY$_{m+n+3}$. This method significantly supersedes existing ones, enabling the simple determination of quiv…
Toric Landau--Ginzburg models of Givental's type for Fano complete intersections are known to have Calabi--Yau compactifications. We give an alternative proof of this fact. As an output of our proof we get a description of fibers over infinity for compactified toric Landau--Ginzburg models.
The Remodeling Conjecture proposed by Bouchard-Klemm-Marino-Pasquetti [arXiv:0709.1453, arXiv:0807.0597] relates all genus open and closed Gromov-Witten invariants of a semi-projective toric Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds/3-orbifolds to the Eynard-Orantin invariants of the mirror curve of the toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this paper, we present a proof of the Remodeling Conjecture for open-closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of an arbitrary affine toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifold relative to a framed Aganagic-Vafa Lagrangian brane. This can be viewed as an all genus open-closed mirror symmetry for affin…

This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0205321 where we have built a combinatorial model for the torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. This part addresses the connection between the model torus fibration and the complex and Kähler geometry of the hypersurfaces.
These notes are based on three lectures given at the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer school. The purpose of this series of lectures is to introduce the notion of a toric fibration and to give its geometrical and combinatorial characterizations. Polarized toric varieties which are birationally equivalent to projective toric bundles are associated to a class of polytopes called Cayley polytopes. Their geometry and combinatorics have a fruitful interplay leading to fundamental insight in both directions. These notes will illustrate geometrical phenomena, in algebraic geometry and neighboring fields, which …
We present a general scheme for identifying fibrations in the framework of toric geometry and provide a large list of weights for Calabi--Yau 4-folds. We find 914,164 weights with degree $d\le150$ whose maximal Newton polyhedra are reflexive and 525,572 weights with degree $d\le4000$ that give rise to weighted projective spaces such that the polynomial defining a hypersurface of trivial canonical class is transversal. We compute all Hodge numbers, using Batyrev's formulas (derived by toric methods) for the first and Vafa's fomulas (obtained by counting of Ramond ground states in N=2 LG models)…
This is an expository article on the Gross--Siebert approach to mirror symmetry and its interactions with the Strominger--Yau--Zaslow conjecture from a topological perspective.
In this paper we give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibration for Calabi-Yau hypersurface in toric variety via the method of gradient flow. Using our construction of Lagrangian torus fibration, we are able to prove the symplectic topological version of SYZ mirror conjecture for generic Calabi-Yau hypersurface in toric variety. We will also be able to give precise formulation of SYZ mirror conjecture in general (including singular locus and duality of singular fibres).
