We study the birational boundedness of special fibers of log Calabi-Yau fibrations and Fano fibrations. We show that for a locally stable family of Fano varieties or polarised log Calabi-Yau pairs over a curve, if the general fiber satisfies some natural boundedness conditions, then every irreducible component of the special fiber is birationally bounded.

A well-known theorem of Kulikov, Persson and Pinkham states that a degeneration of a family of K3-surfaces with trivial monodromy can be completed to a smooth family. We give a simple example that an analogous statement does not hold for Calabi-Yau threefolds.

We show that the dual of the Cayley cone, associated to a Minkowski sum decomposition of a reflexive polytope, contains a reflexive polytope admitting a nef-partition. This nef-partition corresponds to a Calabi-Yau complete intersection in a Gorenstein Fano toric variety degenerating to an ample Calabi-Yau hypersurface in another Fano toric variety. Using the Batyrev-Borisov mirror symmetry construction, we found the mirror contraction of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection to the mirror of the ample Calabi-Yau hypersurface.

We introduce a variety $\hat{G}_2$ parameterizing isotropic five-spaces of a general degenerate four-form in a seven dimensional vector space. It is in a natural way a degeneration of the variety $G_2$, the adjoint variety of the simple Lie group $\mathbb{G}_2$. It occurs that it is also the image of $\mathbb{P}^5$ by a system of quadrics containing a twisted cubic. Degenerations of this twisted cubic to three lines give rise to degenerations of $G_2$ which are toric Gorenstein Fano fivefolds. We study the real loci of toric degenerations of complex varieties with reducible central fibre.
