This paper proves a finiteness result for families of integral points on a semiabelian variety minus a divisor, generalizing the corresponding result of Faltings for abelian varieties. Combined with the main theorem of the first part of this paper, this gives a finiteness statement for integral points on a closed subvariety of a semiabelian variety, minus a divisor.
In addition, the last two sections generalize some standard results on closed subvarieties of semiabelian varieties to the context of closed subvarieties minus divisors.
Let $G$ be a semiabelian variety defined over a field of characteristic $0$, endowed with an endomorphism $Φ$. We prove there is no proper subvariety $Y\subset G$ which intersects the orbit of each periodic point of $G$ under the action of $Φ$. As an application, we are able to give a topological characterization of the annihilator ideals of irreducible representations in certain skew polynomial algebras.
We prove a conjecture of Medvedev and Scanlon in the case of regular morphisms of semiabelian varieties. That is, if $G$ is a semiabelian variety defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $0$, and $φ\colon G\to G$ is a dominant regular self-map of $G$ which is not necessarily a group homomorphism, we prove that one of the following holds: either there exists a non-constant rational fibration preserved by $φ$, or there exists a point $x\in G(K)$ whose $φ$-orbit is Zariski dense in $G$.
Beilinson conjectured that all rational cycles of type (q,q) on the qth cohomology of a smooth complex algebraic variety should come from motivic cohomology. The purpose of this note is to prove this when the variety is a semiabelian variety or a product of curves. The proof is based on the study of invariants under the Mumford-Tate group.
Let $G$ be a semiabelian variety and $C$ a curve in $G$ that is not contained in a proper algebraic subgroup of $G$. In this situation, conjectures of Pink and Zilber imply that there are at most finitely many points contained in the so-called unlikely intersections of $C$ with subgroups of codimension at least $2$. In this note, we establish this assertion for general semiabelian varieties over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. This extends results of Maurin and Bombieri, Habegger, Masser, and Zannier in the toric case as well as Habegger and Pila in the abelian case.
Motivated by the problem of determining the structure of integral points on subvarieties of semiabelian varieties defined over finite fields, we prove a quantifier elimination result for certain modules over finite simple extensions of the integers given together with predicates for orbits of the distinguished generator of the ring.
Along the lines of Hodge and Tate conjectures, Beilinson conjectured that in the qth cohomology all the weight 2q Hodge cycles of a smooth complex variety and all the weight 2q Tate cycles of a smooth variety over a finitely generated field comes from the higher Chow groups. For product of curves and semiabelian varieties, Beilinson-Hodge conjecture was shown in a previous paper by the authors. Here both Beilinson-Hodge and Beilinson-Tate conjectures are shown to be true for varieties dominated by product of curves. We also show that lower weight Hodge cycles (resp. Tate cycles) are algebraic …
The Mordell-Lang conjecture describes the intersection of a finitely generated subgroup with a closed subvariety of a semiabelian variety. Equivalently, this conjecture describes the intersection of closed subvarieties with the set of images of the origin under a finitely generated semigroup of translations. We study the analogous question in which the translations are replaced by algebraic group endomorphisms (and the origin is replaced by another point). We show that the conclusion of the Mordell-Lang conjecture remains true in this setting if either (1) the semiabelian variety is simple, (2…
A divisibility sequence is a sequence of integers $\{d_n\}$ such that $d_m$ divides $d_n$ if $m$ divides $n$. Results of Bugeaud, Corvaja, Zannier, among others, have shown that the gcd of two divisibility sequences corresponding to subgroups of the multiplicative group grows in a controlled way. Silverman conjectured that a similar behaviour should appear in many algebraic groups. We extend results by Ghioca-Hsia-Tucker and Silverman for elliptic curves and prove an analogue of Silverman's conjecture over function fields for abelian and split semiabelian varieties and some generalizations of …
The Equidistribution Conjecture is proved for general semiabelian varieties over number fields. Previously, this conjecture was only known in the special case of almost split semiabelian varieties through work of Chambert-Loir. The general case has remained intractable so far because the height of a semiabelian variety is negative unless it is almost split. In fact, this places the conjecture outside the scope of Yuan's equidistribution theorem on algebraic dynamical systems. To overcome this, an asymptotic adaption of the equidistribution technique invented by Szpiro, Ullmo, and Zhang is used…
The Bounded Height Conjecture of Bombieri, Masser, and Zannier states that for any sufficiently generic algebraic subvariety of a semiabelian $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-variety $G$ there is an upper bound on the Weil height of the points contained in its intersection with the union of all algebraic subgroups having (at most) complementary dimension in $G$. This conjecture has been shown by Habegger in the case where $G$ is either a multiplicative torus or an abelian variety. However, there are new obstructions to his approach if $G$ is a general semiabelian variety. In particular, the lack of Poi…
Let $G$ be a semiabelian variety defined over an algebraically closed field $K$, endowed with a rational self-map $Φ$. Let $α\in G(K)$ and let $Γ\subseteq G(K)$ be a finitely generated subgroup. We show that the set $\{n\in\mathbb{N}\colon Φ^n(α)\in Γ\}$ is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions along with a set of Banach density equal to $0$. In addition, assuming $Φ$ is regular, we prove that the set $S$ must be finite.
We give a uniform bound on the degree of the maximal torsion cosets for subvarieties of an abelian variety. The proof combines algebraic interpolation and a theorem of Serre on homotheties in the Galois representation associated to the torsion subgroup of an abelian variety.
We prove a non-archimedean analogue of the fact that a closed subvariety of a semi-abelian variety is hyperbolic modulo its special locus, and thereby generalize a result of Cherry.
A conjecture by Yves Andre and Frans Oort says that closed subvarieties of Shimura varieties that contain a Zariski dense subset of special points are subvarieties of Hodge type. We prove this in the case where the subvariety is a curve that contains infinitely many special points that lie in one Hecke orbit. Via work of Juergen Wolfart, Paula Cohen and Gisbert Wuestholz, this result has an application to algebraicity of values of hypergeometric functions.
We prove that for a large class of subvarieties of abelian varieties over global function fields, the Brauer-Manin condition on adelic points cuts out exactly the rational points. This result is obtained from more general results concerning the intersection of the adelic points of a subvariety with the adelic closure of the group of rational points of the abelian variety.
Let $S$ be a Shimura variety with reflex field $E$. We prove that the action of $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/E)$ on $S$ maps special points to special points and special subvarieties to special subvarieties. Furthermore, the Galois conjugates of a special point all have the same complexity (as defined in the theory of unlikely intersections). These results follow from Milne and Shih's construction of canonical models of Shimura varieties, based on a conjecture of Langlands which was proved by Borovoi and Milne.
We study the image of $\ell$-adic representations attached to subvarieties of Shimura varieties $Sh_K(G,X)$ that are not contained in a smaller Shimura subvariety and have no isotrivial components. We show that, for $\ell$ large enough (depending on the Shimura datum $(G,X)$ and the subvariety), such image contains the $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points coming from the simply connected cover of the derived subgroup of $G$. This can be regarded as a geometric version of the integral $\ell$-adic Mumford-Tate conjecture.
Let $G$ be a semiabelian variety defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $0$. Let $Φ\colon G\dashrightarrow G$ be a dominant rational self-map. Assume that an iterate $Φ^m \colon G \to G$ is regular for some $m \geqslant 1$ and that there exists no non-constant homomorphism $τ: G\to G_0$ of semiabelian varieties such that $τ\circ Φ^{m k}=τ$ for some $k \geqslant 1$. We show that under these assumptions $Φ$ itself must be a regular. We also prove a variant of this assertion in prime characteristic and present examples showing that our results are sharp.
We explore an analogue of the André-Oort conjecture for subvarieties of Drinfeld modular varieties. The conjecture states that a subvariety $X$ of a Drinfeld modular variety contains a Zariski-dense set of complex multiplication (CM) points if and only if $X$ is a "special" subvariety (i.e. $X$ is defined by requiring additional endomorphisms). We prove this conjecture in two cases. Firstly when $X$ contains a Zariski-dense set of CM points with a certain behaviour above a fixed prime (which is the case if these CM points lie in one Hecke orbit), and secondly when $X$ is a curve containing inf…
Let K be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic p, let X be a semiabelian variety defined over a finite subfield of K, let f be a regular self-map on X defined over K, let V be a subvariety of X defined over K, and let x be a K-point of X. The Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture in characteristic p predicts that the set S consisting of all positive integers n for which f^n(x) lies on V is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions, along with finitely many p-sets, which are sets consisting of all integers of the form c_1 p^{k_1 n_1} + ... + c_m p^{k_m n_m} (as we vary n_1,..…
Let f_1 and f_2 be affine maps of the N-th dimensional affine space over the complex numbers, i.e., f_i(x):=A_i x + y_i (where each A_i is an N-by-N matrix and y_i is a given vector), and let x_1 and x_2 be vectors such that x_i is not preperiodic under the action of f_i for i=1,2. If none of the eigenvalues of the matrices A_i is a root of unity, then we prove that the set of pairs (n_1,n_2) of non-negative integers such that f_1^{n_1}(x_1)=f_2^{n_2}(x_2) is a finite union of sets of the form (m_1k + \ell_1, m_2k + \ell_2) where m_1, m_2, \ell_1, \ell_2 are given non-negative integers, and k …
In this paper we prove the equidistribution of $\Cbf$-special subvarieties in certain Kuga varieties, which implies a special case of the general André-Oort conjecture formulated for mixed Shimura varieties proposed by R.Pink. The main idea is to reduce the equidistribution to a theorem of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang on small points of abelian varieties and a theorem on the equiditribution of $C$-special subvarieties of Kuga varieties of rigid type treated by the author in a previous paper.
This paper gives a complete parametrization of the commensurability classes of totally geodesic subspaces of irreducible arithmetic quotients of $X_{a, b} = (\mathbf{H}^2)^a \times (\mathbf{H}^3)^b$. A special case describes all Shimura subvarieties of type $\mathrm{A}_1$ Shimura varieties. We produce, for any $n\geq 1$, examples of manifolds/Shimura varieties with precisely $n$ commensurability classes of totally geodesic submanifolds/Shimura subvarieties. This is in stark contrast with the previously studied cases of arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-manifolds and quaternionic Shimura surfaces, wher…
In this paper we prove the equidistribution of certain families of special subvarieties in Kuga varieties, which is a special case of the general Andre-Oort conjecture formulated for mixed Shimura varieties proposed by R.Pink. Our approach is parallel to the pure case treated in the works of L.Clozel, E.Ullmo, and A.Yafaev using tools from ergodic theory.
In this paper we prove the equidistribution of bounded sequences of special subvarieties in a general mixed Shimura varieties, a notion adapted from the pure case treated by Clozel, Ullmo, and Yafaev in the study of the Andre-Oort conjecture. We also discuss the relation of bounded sequences with bounded Galois orbits of special subvarieties.
Let $Y$ be a subvariety contained in a smooth Mumford compactification of an orthogonal Shimura variety $M \subset A_g$, where $A_g$ is the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ with some level structure, such that $Y$ intersects the boundary of $A_g$ transversally. Then we give necessary and sufficient conditions of André-Oort type for $Y$ itself being the compactification of a special subvariety $Y^0 \subset M$
In this article, we prove that the Zilber-Pink conjecture for abelian varieties over an arbitrary field of characteristic $0$ is implied by the same statement for abelian varieties over the algebraic numbers. More precisely, the conjecture holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the abelian variety $A$ if it holds for subvarieties of dimension at most $m$ in the largest abelian subvariety of $A$ that is isomorphic to an abelian variety defined over $\bar{ \mathbb{Q}}$.
We study Néron models of pseudo-Abelian varieties over excellent discrete valuation rings of equal characteristic $p>0$ and generalize the notions of good reduction and semiabelian reduction to such algebraic groups. We prove that the well-known representation-theoretic criteria for good and semiabelian reduction due to Néron-Ogg-Shafarevich and Grothendieck carry over to the pseudo-Abelian case, and give examples to show that our results are the best possible in most cases. Finally, we study the order of the group scheme of connected components of the Néron model in the pseudo-Abelian case. O…
We show that for a variety which admits a quasi-finite period map, finiteness (resp.~non-Zariski-density) of $S$-integral points implies finiteness (resp.~non-Zariski-density) of points over all $\mathbb{Z}$-finitely generated integral domains of characteristic zero. Our proofs rely on foundational results in Hodge theory due to Deligne, Griffiths, and Schmid, and Bakker-Brunebarbe-Tsimerman. We give straightforward applications to Shimura varieties, locally symmetric varieties, the moduli space of smooth hypersurfaces in projective space, and the moduli of smooth divisors in an abelian variet…
We prove inequalities involving greatest common divisors of functions at integral points with respect to numerically parallel divisors, generalizing a result of Wang and Yasufuku (after work of Bugeaud-Corvaja-Zannier, Corvaja-Zannier, and the second author). After applying a result of Vojta on integral points on subvarieties of semiabelian varieties, we use geometry and the theory of heights to reduce to the (known) case of $\mathbb{G}_m^n$. In addition to proving results in a broader context than previously considered, we also study the exceptional set in this setting, for both the counting …
We investigate Fano varieties defined over a number field that contain subvarieties whose number of rational points of bounded height is comparable to the total number on the variety.
Let F be a global field. In this work, we show that the Brauer-Manin condition on adelic points for subvarieties of a torus T over F cuts out exactly the rational points, if either F is a function field or, if F is the field of rational numbers and T is split. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Harari-Voloch over global function fields which states, roughly speaking, that on any rational hyperbolic curve, the local integral points with the Brauer-Manin condition are the global integral points. Finally we prove for tori over number fields a theorem of Stoll on adelic points of zero-dim…
For a semi-abelian variety over a global function field which is isogenous to an isotrivial one, we show that on the product of local points of a subvariety satisfying a minor condition, the topological closure of a finitely generated subgroup of %the group of its global points cuts out exactly the global points of the subvariety lying in this subgroup. As a corollary, on every non-isotrivial super-singular curve of genus two over a global function field, we conclude that the Brauer-Manin condition cuts out exactly the set of its rational points.
