Let F be a closed non-orientable surface. We classify all finite order invariants of immersions of F into R^3, with values in any Abelian group. We show they are all functions of the universal order 1 invariant that we construct as T \oplus P \oplus Q where T is a Z valued invariant reflecting the number of triple points of the immersion, and P,Q are Z/2 valued invariants characterized by the property that for any regularly homotopic immersions i,j:F\to R^3, P(i)-P(j) \in Z/2 (respectively Q(i)-Q(j) \in Z/2) is the number mod 2 of tangency points (respectively quadruple points) occurring in any generic regular homotopy between i and j.
For immersion i:F\to R^3 and diffeomorphism h:F\to F such that i and i \circ h are regularly homotopic we show:
P(i\circ h)-P(i) = Q(i\circ h)-Q(i) = (rank(h_* - Id) + E(\det h_**)) mod 2 where h_* is the map induced by h on H_1(F;Z/2), h_** is the map induced by h on H_1(F;Q) (Q=the rationals), and for 0 \neq q \in Q, E(q) \in Z/2 is 0 or 1 according to whether q is positive or negative, respectively.
Some properties of non-orientable 3-manifolds are shown. The semi-group of cobordism of immersions of surfaces in such manifolds is computed and proven actually to be a group. Explicit invariants are provided.
We study finite order invariants of null-homotopic immersions of a closed orientable surface into an aspherical orientable 3-manifold. We give the foundational constructions, and classify all order one invariants.
We present and apply a method for disproving the existence of polyhedral immersions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of certain triangulations on non-orientable surfaces. In particular, it is proved that neither of the two vertex-minimal, neighborly 9-vertex triangulations of the non-orientable surface of genus 5 are realizable as immersed polyhedral surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
We show that a compact orientable 4-manifold M has a CR regular immersion into C3 if and only if both its first Pontryagin class and its Euler characteristic vanish, and has a CR regular embedding into C3 if and only if in addition the second Stiefel-Whitney class of M vanishes.
We classify all finite order invariants of immersions of a closed orientable surface into R^3, with values in any Abelian group. We show that they are all functions of order one invariants.
We classify all order one invariants of immersions of a closed orientable surface F into R^3, with values in an arbitrary Abelian group G. We show that for any F and G and any regular homotopy class A of immersions of F into R^3, the group of all order one invariants on A is isomorphic to G^\aleph_0 \oplus B \oplus B where G^\aleph_0 is the group of all functions from a set of cardinality \aleph_0 into G and B={x\in G : 2x=0}. Our work includes foundations for the study of finite order invariants of immersions of a closed orientable surface into R^3, analogous to chord diagrams and the 1-term …
This article presents an improvement and extension of the heuristic first presented by Hougardy, Lutz, and Zelke in 2010 for realizing triangulated orientable surfaces with few vertices by a simplex-wise linear embedding. The improvement consists in the applicability to non-orientable surfaces (simplex-wise linear immersions) as well as symmetric realizations. With the help of our algorithm, numerous - often symmetric - realizations of non-orientable surfaces with the minimal number or few vertices have been obtained for the first time. These examples include the the Projective Plane with one …
We give an elementary proof of the fact that any orientable 3-manifold admits a framing (i.e. is parallelizable) and any non-orientable 3-manifold admits a projective framing. The proof uses only basic facts about immersions of surfaces in 3-space.
Given a surface F, we are interested in Z/2 valued invariants of immersions of F into R^3, which are constant on each connected component of the complement of the quadruple point discriminant in Imm(F,R^3). Such invariants will be called ``q-invariants.'' Given a regular homotopy class A in Imm(F,R^3), we denote by V_n(A) the space of all q-invariants on A of order <= n. We show that if F is orientable, then for each regular homotopy class A and each n, dim(V_n(A) / V_{n-1}(A)) <= 1.
The universal order 1 invariant f^U of immersions of a closed orientable surface into R^3, whose existence has been established in [N3], takes values in the group G_U = K \oplus Z/2 \oplus Z/2 where K is a countably generated free Abelian group. The projections of f^U to K and to the first and second Z/2 factors are denoted f^K, M, Q respectively. An explicit formula for the value of Q on any embedding has been given in [N2]. In the present work we give an explicit formula for the value of f^K on any immersion, and for the value of M on any embedding.
Given any finite subset X of the sphere S^n, n>1, which includes no pairs of antipodal points, we explicitly construct smoothly immersed closed orientable hypersurfaces in Euclidean space R^{n+1} whose Gauss map misses X. In particular, this answers a question of M. Gromov.
We show that, for a closed orientable n-manifold, with n not congruent to 3 modulo 4, the existence of a CR-regular embedding into complex (n-1)-space ensures the existence of a totally real embedding into complex n-space. This implies that a closed orientable (4k+1)-manifold with non-vanishing Kervaire semi-characteristic possesses no CR-regular embedding into complex 4k-space. We also pay special attention to the cases of CR-regular embeddings of spheres and of simply-connected 5-manifolds.
We establish an $h$-principle for exact Lagrangian immersions with transverse self-intersections and the minimal, or near-minimal number of double points. One corollary of our result is that any orientable closed 3-manifold admits an exact Lagrangian immersion into standard symplectic 6-space $\R^6_\st$ with exactly one transverse double point. Our construction also yields a Lagrangian embedding $S^1\times S^2\to\R^6_\st$ with vanishing Maslov class.
Hensel-Przytycki-Webb proved that all curve graphs of orientable surfaces are 17-hyperbolic. In this paper, we show that curve graphs of non-orientable surfaces are 17-hyperbolic by applying Hensel-Przytycki-Webb's argument. We also show that arc graphs of non-orientable surfaces are 7-hyperbolic, and arc-curve graphs of (non-)orientable surfaces are 9-hyperbolic.
This paper is to study the $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ case of \hyperref[Zhao]{[9]}. We determine all equivalence classes of immersed $3$-manifolds bounded by an arbitrary immersed surface in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$.
We describe each multiple curve on the orientable surface of genus-$g$ with $n$ punctures and one boundary component by using this multiple curve's geometric intersection number with the embedded curves in this surface.
In this note, we investigate the relation between double points and complex points of immersed surfaces in almost-complex 4-manifolds and show how estimates for the minimal genus of embedded surfaces lead to inequalities between the number of double points and the number of complex points of an immersion. We also provide a generalization of a classical genus estimate due to V.A. Rokhlin to the case of immersed surfaces.
The present paper are the notes of a mini-course addressed mainly to non-experts. It purpose it to provide a first approach to the theory of mapping class groups of non-orientable surfaces.
By considering appropriate finite covering spaces of closed non-orientable surfaces, we construct linear representations of their mapping class group which have finite index image in certain big arithmetic groups.
For a non-orientable closed surface standardly embedded in the 4-sphere, a diffeomorphism over this surface is extendable if and only if this diffeomorphism preserves the Guillou-Marin quadratic form of this embedded surface.
Let M be a compact closed non-orientable surface. We show that the space of representations of the fundamental group of M into PSL(2,R) has exactly two connected components. These two components are the preimages of a certain Stiefel-Whitney characteristic class, computed in a similar way as the Euler class in the orientable case.
We introduce a Lie algebra associated with a non-orientable surface, which is an analogue for the Goldman Lie algebra of an oriented surface. As an application, we deduce an explicit formula of the Dehn twist along an annulus simple closed curve on the surface as in Kawazumi-Kuno and Masseyeau-Turaev.
Birman-Lubotzky-McCarthy proved that any abelian subgroup of the mapping class groups for orientable surfaces is finitely generated. We apply Birman-Lubotzky-McCarthy's arguments to the mapping class groups for non-orientable surfaces. We especially find a finitely generated group isomorphic to a given torsion-free subgroup of the mapping class groups.
After a short summary of known results on surface-complexity of closed 3-manifolds, we will classify all closed orientable 3-manifolds with surface-complexity one.
We describe a general method to compute the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Thurston norm for every $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology class in an orientable Seifert manifold with orientable orbit surface. Our main tools are pseudo-horizontal surfaces. We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of pseudo-horizontal surfaces, calculate the non-orientable genera for such surfaces, and detect their $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology classes. We then describe an algorithm to calculate the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Thurston norm of each $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology classes. We also present several interesting examples.
We find conditions under which a non-orientable closed surface S embedded into an orientable closed 4-manifold X can be represented by a connected sum of an embedded closed surface in X and an unknotted projective plane in a 4-sphere. This allows us to extend the Gabai 4-dimensional light bulb theorem and the Auckly-Kim-Melvin-Ruberman-Schwartz "one is enough" theorem to the case of non-orientable surfaces.
S. Blank solved the question of classifying immersed circles in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ that extend to immersed disks, and how many topologically inequivalent disks can be extended. The quetions of various cases in $2$-dimension have already been solved by generalizing his method. In this paper, we give a new way, which is straightforward for the questions, and we determine all topological equivalence classes of immersed surfaces bounded by an arbitrary immersed circle in a closed oriented surface.

For a closed surface $S$, its Torelli group $\mathcal{I}(S)$ is the subgroup of the mapping class group of $S$ consisting of elements acting trivially on $H_1(S;\mathbb{Z})$. When $S$ is orientable, a generating set for $\mathcal{I}(S)$ is known. In this paper, we give a normal generating set of $\mathcal{I}(N_g)$ for $g\geq4$, where $N_g$ is a genus-$g$ non-orientable closed surface.
We provide analogues for non-orientable surfaces with or without boundary or punctures of several basic theorems in the setting of the Thurston theory of surfaces which were developed so far only in the case of orientable surfaces. Namely, we provide natural analogues for non-orientable surfaces of the Fenchel-Nielsen theorem on the parametrization of the Teichmüller space of the surface, the Dehn-Thurston theorem on the parametrization of measured foliations in the surface, and the Hatcher-Thurston theorem, which gives a complete minimal set of moves between pair of pants decompositions of th…
We determine the first homology group with coefficients in $H_1(N;\mathbb{Z})$ for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface $N$ of genus three with two boundary components.
We describe triangle coordinates for integral laminations on a non-orientable surface $N_{k,n}$ of genus $k$ with $n$ punctures and one boundary component, and give an explicit bijection from the set of integral laminations on $N_{k,n}$ to $(\mathbb{Z}^{2(n+k-2)}\times \mathbb{Z}^k)\setminus \left\{0\right\}$.
In formulating a non-orientable analogue of the Milnor Conjecture on the $4$-genus of torus knots, Batson developed an elegant construction that produces a smooth non-orientable spanning surface in $B^4$ for a given torus knot in $S^3$. While Lobb showed that Batson's surfaces do not always minimize the non-orientable $4$-genus, we prove that they always do minimize among surfaces that share their normal Euler number. We also completely determine the possible pairs of normal Euler number and first Betti number for non-orientable surfaces whose boundary lies in a class of torus knots for which …
A rigid set in a curve complex of a surface is a subcomplex such that every locally injective simplicial map from the set into the curve complex is induced by a homeomorphism of the surface. In this paper, we find finite rigid sets in the curve complexes of connected non-orientable surfaces of genus $g$ with $n$ holes for $g+n \neq 4$.
The purpose of this paper is to study the action of the mapping class group on the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of a non-orientable surface into SU(2). The action is shown to be ergodic with respect to a natural measure. This measure is defined using the push-forward measure associated to a map defined by the presentation of the surface group. given by the pushforward of Haar measure. This result is an extension of earlier results of Goldman for orientable surfaces.
By considering non-orientable surfaces in the surgered manifolds, we show that the 10/3- and -10/3-Dehn surgeries on the 2-bridge knot $9_{27} = S(49,19)$ are not cosmetic, i.e., they give mutually non-homeomorphic manifolds. The knot is unknown to have no cosmetic surgeries by previously known results; in particular, by using the Casson invariant and the Heegaard Floer homology.
Let $N_g$ be the non-orientable surface with genus $g$, $\text{MCG}(N_g)$ be the mapping class group of $N_g$, $\mathcal{T}(N_g)$ be the index 2 subgroup generated by all Dehn twists of $\text{MCG}(N_g)$. We prove that for odd genus, $\mathcal{T}(N_g)$ can be generated by three elements of finite orders.
A self-transverse immersion of a smooth manifold M^{k+2} in R^{2k+2} has a double point self-intersection set which is the image of an immersion of a smooth surface, the double point self-intersection surface. We prove that this surface may have odd Euler characteristic if and only if k is congruent to 1 modulo 4 or k+1 is a power of 2. This corrects a previously published result by Andras Szucs. The method of proof is to evaluate the Stiefel-Whitney numbers of the double point self-intersection surface. By earier work of the authors these numbers can be read off from the Hurewicz image h(α) i…
Let $N_{g,n}$ be an $n$--punctured non--orientable surface of genus $g$ with one boundary component. For $g\geq 2$ one of the generators of the mapping class group of $N_{g,n}$ is a crosscap transposition. We give explicit formulae for the action of crosscap transpositions and their inverses on the set of multicurves in $N_{g,n}$ in terms of generalized Dynnikov coordinates.
The self intersection of an immersion i : S^2 \to R^3 dissects S^2 into pieces which are planar surfaces (unless i is an embedding). In this work we determine what collections of planar surfaces may be obtained in this way. In particular, for every n we construct an immersion i : S^2 \to R^3 with 2n triple points, for which all pieces are discs.
Let $N_{g}$ denote the closed non-orientable surface of genus $g$ and let ${\mathcal M} _g$ denote the mapping class group of $N_{g}$. Let ${\mathcal T} _g$ denote the twist subgroup of ${\mathcal M} _g$ which is the subgroup of ${\mathcal M} _g$ is generated by all Dehn twists. In this thesis, we proved that ${\mathcal T} _g$ is generated by six involutions for $g \geq 16$ or $g = 14$.
Let $N_k$ denote the closed non-orientable surface of genus $k$. In this paper we study the behaviour of the `square map' from the group of isometries of hyperbolic 3-space to the subgroup of orientation preserving isometries. We show that there are $2^{k+1}$ connected components of representations of $π_1(N_k)$ in Isom$(\mathbb{H}^3)$, which are distinguished by the Stiefel-Whitney classes of the associated flat bundle.
We investigate constraints on embeddings of a non-orientable surface in a $4$-manifold with the homology of $M \times I$, where $M$ is a rational homology $3$-sphere. The constraints take the form of inequalities involving the genus and normal Euler class of the surface, and either the Ozsváth--Sazbó $d$-invariants or Atiyah--Singer $ρ$-invariants of $M$. One consequence is that the minimal genus of a smoothly embedded surface in $L(2p,q) \times I$ is the same as the minimal genus of a surface in $L(2p,q)$. We also consider embeddings of non-orientable surfaces in closed $4$-manifolds.
Let F be a closed surface and i:F \to S^3 a generic immersions. Then S^3 - i(F) is a union of connected regions, which may be separated into two sets {U_j} and {V_j} by a checkerboard coloring. For k \geq 0, let a_k, b_k be the number of components U_j, V_j with χ(U_j) = 1-k, χ(V_j)=1-k, respectively. Two more integers attached to i are the number N of triple points of i, and χ=χ(F). In this work we determine what sets of data ({a_k}, {b_k}, χ, N) may appear in this way.
We show that the normal closure of any periodic element of the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface whose order is greater than 2 contains the commutator subgroup, which for $g\geq 7$ is equal to the twist subgroup, and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the normal closures of involutions to contain the twist subgroup. Finally, we provide a criterion for a periodic element to normally generate $\mathcal{M}(N_g)$ and give examples.
This article is a survey article that gives detailed constructions and illustrations of some of the standard examples of non-orientable surfaces that are embedded and immersed in 4-dimensional space. The illustrations depend upon their 3-dimensional projections, and indeed the illustrations here depend upon a further projection into the plane of the page. The concepts used to develop the illustrations will be developed herein.
We classify immersions $f$ of $S^1$ in a $2$-manifold $M$ in terms of elementary invariants: the parity $S(f)$ of the number of double points of a self-transverse $C^1$-approximation of $f$, and the turning number $T(e\bar f)$ of the immersion $e\bar f:S^1\to M_f\subset\Bbb R^2$, where $\bar f$ is a lift of $f$ to the cover $M_f$ of $M$ corresponding to the subgroup $\left<[f]\right>\subsetπ_1(M)$. Namely, immersions $f,g:S^1\to M$ are regular homotopic if and only if they are homotopic, and if $M=S^2$ or $\Bbb R P^2$ or the normal bundle $ν(f)$ is non-orientable, then $S(f)=S(g)$, whereas if …
We give a concrete example of an infinite sequence of $(p_n, q_n)$-lens spaces $L(p_n, q_n)$ with natural triangulations $T(p_n, q_n)$ with $p_n$ taterahedra such that $L(p_n, q_n)$ contains a certain non-orientable closed surface which is fundamental with respect to $T(p_n, q_n)$ and of minimal crosscap number among all closed non-orientable surfaces in $L(p_n, q_n)$ and has $n-2$ parallel sheets of normal disks of a quadrilateral type disjoint from the pair of core circles of $L(p_n, q_n)$. Actually, we can set $p_0=0, q_0=1, p_{k+1}=3p_k+2q_k$ and $q_{k+1}=p_k+q_k$.
