We show that the normal closure of any periodic element of the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface whose order is greater than 2 contains the commutator subgroup, which for $g\geq 7$ is equal to the twist subgroup, and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the normal closures of involutions to contain the twist subgroup. Finally, we provide a criterion for a periodic element to normally generate $\mathcal{M}(N_g)$ and give examples.
Let $N_g$ be the non-orientable surface with genus $g$, $\text{MCG}(N_g)$ be the mapping class group of $N_g$, $\mathcal{T}(N_g)$ be the index 2 subgroup generated by all Dehn twists of $\text{MCG}(N_g)$. We prove that for odd genus, $\mathcal{T}(N_g)$ can be generated by three elements of finite orders.
Let $Σ_{g,n}$ denote the compact orientable surface with genus $g\geq 2$ and boundary disjoint union of $n$ circles. By using a particular pants-decomposition of $Σ_{g,n},$ we obtain a formula that computes the Reidemeister torsion of $Σ_{g,n}$ in terms of Reidemeister torsions of pairs of pants.
Birman-Lubotzky-McCarthy proved that any abelian subgroup of the mapping class groups for orientable surfaces is finitely generated. We apply Birman-Lubotzky-McCarthy's arguments to the mapping class groups for non-orientable surfaces. We especially find a finitely generated group isomorphic to a given torsion-free subgroup of the mapping class groups.
Let $N_{g,n}$ be an $n$--punctured non--orientable surface of genus $g$ with one boundary component. For $g\geq 2$ one of the generators of the mapping class group of $N_{g,n}$ is a crosscap transposition. We give explicit formulae for the action of crosscap transpositions and their inverses on the set of multicurves in $N_{g,n}$ in terms of generalized Dynnikov coordinates.
We prove that the mapping class group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g$ is generated by two elements of order $g$ for $g\geq 6$. Moreover, for $g\geq 7$ we found a generating set of two elements, of order $g$ and $g'$ which is the least divisor of $g$ such that $g'>2$. Furthermore, we proved that it is generated by two elements of order $g/\gcd (g,k)$ for $g\geq 3k^2+4k+1$ and any positive integer $k$.
We give a small generating set for the twist subgroup of the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface by Dehn twists. The difference between the number of the generators and a lower bound of numbers of generators for the twist subgroup by Dehn twists is one. The lower bounds is obtained from an argument of Hirose [5].
We showed that the twist subgroup of the mapping class group of a closed connected nonorientable surface of genus $g\geq13$ can be generated by two involutions and an element of order $g$ or $g-1$ depending on whether $g$ is odd or even respectively.
We show that Szepietowski's system of generators for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface is a minimal generating set by Dehn twists and $Y$-homemorphisms.
We prove that the pure braid groups on closed, orientable surfaces are bi-orderable, and that the pure braid groups on closed, non-orientable surfaces have generalized torsion, thus they are not bi-orderable.
Small covers arising from 3-dimensional simple polytopes are an interesting class of 3-manifolds. The fundamental group is a rigid invariant for wide classes of 3-manifolds, particularly for orientable Haken manifolds, which include orientable small covers. By using Morse-theoretic approach we give a procedure to get an explicit, balanced presentation of the fundamental group of a closed, orientable 3-dimensional simple cover with minimal number of generators. Beside that the minimal Heegaard splitting is determined by this presentation.
In analogy with the Thurston norm, we define for an orientable 3-manifold $M$ a numerical function on $H_2(M;Q/Z)$. This function measures the minimal complexity of folded surfaces representing a given homology class. A similar function is defined on the torsion subgroup of $H_1(M)$. These functions are estimated from below in terms of abelian torsions of $M$.
Let $S_g$ be the closed oriented surface of genus g and let $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group. When the genus is at least 3, $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ can be generated by torsion elements. We prove the follow results. For $g \geq 4$, $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ can be generated by 4 torsion elements. Three generators are involutions and the forth one is an order 3 element. $\text{Mod}(S_3)$ can be generated by 5 torsion elements. Four generators are involutions and the fifth one is an order 3 element.
A nontrivial element in a group is a generalized torsion element if some nonempty finite product of its conjugates is the identity. We prove that any generalized torsion element in a free product of torsion-free groups is conjugate to a generalized torsion element in some factor group. This implies that the fundamental group of a compact orientable $3$-manifold $M$ has a generalized torsion element if and only if the fundamental group of some prime factor of $M$ has a generalized torsion element. On the other hand, we demonstrate that there are infinitely many toroidal $3$-manifolds whose fund…
We construct several families of embeddings of braid groups into mapping class groups of orientable and non-orientable surfaces and prove that they induce the trivial map in stable homology in the orientable case, but not so in the non-orientable case. We show that these embeddings are non-geometric in the sense that the standard generators of the braid group are not mapped to Dehn twists.
We use Klyachko's methods to prove that the natural map G to G-hat, where G is a torsion-free group and G-hat is obtained by adding a new generator t and a new relator w, is surjective only if w is conjugate to gt or gt^{-1} for some g in G. This solves a special case of the surjectivity problem for group extensions, raised by Cohen [Whitehead torsion, group extensions, and Zeeman's conjecture in high dimensions, Topology, 16 (1977) 79--88].
We prove that the homology of the mapping class groups of non-orientable surfaces stabilizes with the genus of the surface. Combining our result with recent work of Madsen and Weiss, we obtain that the classifying space of the stable mapping class group of non-orientable surfaces, up to homology isomorphism, is the infinite loop space of a Thom spectrum build from the canonical bundle over the Grassmannians of 2-planes in R^{n+2}. In particular, we show that the stable rational cohomology is a polynomial algebra on generators in degrees 4i--this is the non-oriented analogue of the Mumford conj…
We show that the pure mapping class group $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ of a non-orientable closed surface of genus $g\geqslant 2$ with $k\geqslant 1$ marked points has $p$-periodic cohomology for each odd prime $p$ for which $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ has $p$-torsion. Using the Yagita invariant and the cohomology classes obtained by the representation of subgroups of order $p$, we obtain that the $p$-period is less than or equal to $4$ when $g\geqslant 3$ and $k\geqslant 1$. Moreover, combining the Nielsen realization theorem and a characterization of the $p$-period given in terms of normalizers and centr…
Let Mod(Sigma_{g, p}) denote the mapping class group of a connected orientable surface of genus g with p punctures. For every even integer p \geq 10 and g \geq 14, we prove that Mod(Sigma_{g, p}) can be generated by three involutions. If the number of punctures p is odd and \geq 9, we show that Mod(Sigma_{g, p}) for g \geq 13 can be generated by four involutions. Moreover, we show that for an even integer p \geq 4 and 3 \leq g \geq 6, Mod(Sigma_{g, p}) can be generated by four involutions.
We show that contact homology distinguishes infinitely many tight contact structures on any orientable, toroidal, irreducible 3-manifold. As a consequence of the contact homology computations, on a very large class of toroidal manifolds, all known examples of universally tight contact structures with nonvanishing torsion satisfy the Weinstein conjecture. ----- On montre que l'homologie de contact distingue une infinite de structures de contact tendues sur toute variete toroidale irreductible et orientable de dimension trois. En consequence des calculs d'homologie de contact, sur une tres large…
If $X$ is an orientable, strongly minimal $PD_4$-complex and $π_1(X)$ has one end then it has no nontrivial locally-finite normal subgroup. Hence if $π$ is a 2-knot group then (a) if $π$ is virtually solvable then either $π$ has two ends or $π\congΦ$, with presentation $\langle{a,t}|ta=a^2t\rangle$, or $π$ is torsion-free and polycyclic of Hirsch length 4; (b) either $π$ has two ends, or $π$ has one end and the centre $ζπ$ is torsion-free, or $π$ has infinitely many ends and $ζπ$ is finite; and (c) the Hirsch-Plotkin radical $\sqrtπ$ is nilpotent.
Let S be an orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic, let ψ\in\Mod(S) be a mapping class of S, and let T_ψ be the mapping torus of ψ. We study the action of lifts of ψon the homology of finite covers of S via the torsion homology growth of towers of finite covers of T_ψ. We show that ψadmits a lift to a finite cover with a homological eigenvalue of length greater than one if and only if the mapping torus T_ψ admits a finite cover X and a certain tower of abelian covers which have exponential torsion homology growth. We show that the existence of such a lift of ψis intrinsic to T_ψ…
With any non necessarily orientable unpunctured marked surface (S,M) we associate a commutative algebra, called quasi-cluster algebra, equipped with a distinguished set of generators, called quasi-cluster variables, in bijection with the set of arcs and one-sided simple closed curves in (S,M). Quasi-cluster variables are naturally gathered into possibly overlapping sets of fixed cardinality, called quasi-clusters, corresponding to maximal non-intersecting families of arcs and one-sided simple closed curves in (S,M). If the surface S is orientable, then the quasi-cluster algebra is the cluster …
Let $F_g$ be the closed orientable surface of genus $g$. We address the problem to extend torsion elements of the mapping class group ${\mathcal{M}}(F_g)$ over the 4-sphere $S^4$. Let $w_g$ be a torsion element of maximum order in ${\mathcal{M}}(F_g)$. Results including: (1) For each $g$, $w_g$ is periodically extendable over $S^4$ for some non-smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$, and not periodically extendable over $S^4$ for any smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$. (2) For each $g$, $w_g$ is extendable over $S^4$ for some smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$ if and only if $g=4k, 4k+3$. (3) Each torsi…
The Ptolemy groupoid is a combinatorial groupoid generated by elementary moves on marked trivalent fatgraphs with three types of relations. Through the fatgraph decomposition of Teichmüller space, the Ptolemy groupoid is a mapping class group equivariant subgroupoid of the fundamental path groupoid of Teichmüller space with a discrete set objects. In particular, it leads to an infinite, but combinatorially simple, presentation of the mapping class group of an orientable surface. In this note, we give a presentation of a full mapping class group equivariant subgroupoid of the Ptolemy groupoid o…
For any finite type connected surface $S$, we give an infinite presentation of the fundamental group $π_1(S,\ast)$ of $S$ based at an interior point $\ast\in{S}$ whose generators are represented by simple loops. When $S$ is non-orientable, we also give an infinite presentation of the subgroup of $π_1(S,\ast)$ generated by elements which are represented by simple loops whose regular neighborhoods are annuli.
Using the works of Gervais, Harer, Hatcher and Thurston and others, we show that the mapping class group of a compact orientable surface has a presentation so that the generators are the set of all Dehn twists and the relations are supported in subsurfaces homeomorphic to the one-holed torus or the four-holed sphere. It turns out that all the relations were discovered by Dehn in 1938.
It is known that a bi-orderable group has no generalized torsion element, but the converse does not hold in general. We conjecture that the converse holds for the fundamental groups of 3-manifolds, and verify the conjecture for non-hyperbolic, geometric 3-manifolds. We also confirm the conjecture for some infinite families of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In the course of the proof, we prove that each standard generator of the Fibonacci group F(2,m) (m>2) is a generalized torsion element.
Let $S_g$ be the closed oriented surface of genus g and let $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_g)$ be the extended mapping class group of $S_g$. When the genus is at least 5, we prove that $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_g)$ can be generated by two torsion elements. One of these generators is an order 2 element, and the other one is an order 4g+2 element.
Let O be a compact orientable 3-orbifold with non-empty singular locus and a finite volume hyperbolic structure. (Equivalently, O is the quotient of hyperbolic 3-space by a lattice in PSL(2,C) with torsion.) Then we prove that O has a tower of finite-sheeted covers {O_i} with linear growth of p-homology, for some prime p. This means that the dimension of the first homology, with mod p coefficients, of the fundamental group of O_i grows linearly in the covering degree. The proof combines techniques from 3-manifold theory with group-theoretic methods, including the Golod-Shafarevich inequality a…
Two free homotopy classes of closed curves in an orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic are said to be length equivalent if for any hyperbolic structure on the surface, the length of the geodesic in one class is equal to the length of the geodesic in the other class. We show that there are elements in the free group of two generators that are length equivalent and have different self-intersection numbers as elements in the fundamental group of the punctured torus and as elements in the pair of pants. This result answers open questions about length equivalence classes and raises …
Let $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. In this paper, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for two finite-order mapping classes to have commuting conjugates in $\text{Mod}(S_g)$. As an application of this result, we show that any finite-order mapping class, whose corresponding orbifold is not a sphere, has a conjugate that lifts under any finite-sheeted cover of $S_g$. Furthermore, we show that any torsion element in the centralizer of an irreducible finite order mapping class is of order at most $2$. We also obtain …
The Fibonacci groups $F(n)$ are known to exhibit significantly different behaviour depending on the parity of $n$. We extend known results for $F(n)$ for odd $n$ to the family of Fractional Fibonacci groups $F^{k/l}(n)$. We show that for odd $n$ the group $F^{k/l}(n)$ is not the fundamental group of an orientable hyperbolic 3-orbifold of finite volume. We obtain results concerning the existence of torsion in the groups $F^{k/l}(n)$ (where $n$ is odd) paying particular attention to the groups $F^k(n)$ and $F^{k/l}(3)$, and observe consequences concerning asphericity of relative presentations of…
Let F a closed connected orientable surface bounding a genus g handlebody H. In this paper we find a finite set of generators for the subgroup E(2,g) of the pure mapping class group of the twice punctured torus PMCG(2,g), consisting of the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of F which admit an extension to H keeping a properly embedded trivial arc fixed. This subgroup turns out to be important for the study of knots in closed 3-manifolds via (g,1)-decomposition. In fact, the knots represented by the isotopy classes belonging to the same left cosets of E(2,g) in PMCG(2,g) are equivalent.
In this paper we will use b-groups to construct coordinates for the Teichmüller spaces of 2-orbifolds. The main technical tool is the parametrization of triangle groups, which allows us to compute explicitly formulæ for generators of b-groups uniformizing orbifolds. In this way, we obtain a technique to pass from the abstract objects of deformation spaces to concrete calculations with Möbius transformations. We explore this computational character of our work by finding the expressions of certain classical isomorphisms between Teichmüller spaces.
Given a finite subgroup G of the mapping class group of a surface S, the Nielsen realization problem asks whether G can be realized as a finite group of homeomorphisms of S. In 1983, Kerckhoff showed that for S a finite-type surface, any finite subgroup G may be realized as a group of isometries of some hyperbolic metric on S. We extend Kerckhoff's result to orientable, infinite-type surfaces. As applications, we classify torsion elements in the mapping class group of the plane minus a Cantor set, and also show that topological groups containing sequences of torsion elements limiting to the id…
In this paper, we classify all the orientable hyperbolic 5-manifolds that arise as a hyperbolic space form $H^5/Γ$ where $Γ$ is a torsion-free subgroup of minimal index of the congruence two subgroup $Γ^5_2$ of the group $Γ^5$ of positive units of the Lorentzian quadratic form $x_1^2+...+x_5^2-x_6^2$. We also show that $Γ^5_2$ is a reflection group with respect to a 5-dimensional right-angled convex polytope in $H^5$. As an application, we construct a hyperbolic 5-manifold of smallest known volume $7ζ(3)/4$.
For $g\geq1$ denote by $F_{2g}=\langle x_1, y_1,\dots,x_g,y_g\rangle$ the free group on $2g$ generators and by $B_g=[x_1,y_1]\dots[x_g,y_g]$. For $l,c\geq 1$ and elements $w_1,\dots,w_l\in F_{2g}$ we study orientable quadratic equations of the form $[u_1,v_1]\dots[u_h,v_h]=(B_g^{w_1})^c(B_g^{w_2})^c\dots(B_g^{w_l})^c$ with unknowns $u_1,v_1,\dots,u_h,v_h$ and provide explicit solutions for them for the minimal possible number $h$. In the particular case when $g=1$, $w_i=y_1^{i-1}$ for $i=1,\dots,l$ and $h$ the minimal number which satisfies $h \geq l(c-1)/2+1$ we provide two types of solutions…
For every group genetic code with finite number of generating and at most with one defining relation we introduce the braid group of this genetic code. This construction includes the braid group of Euclidean plane, the braid groups of closed orientable surfaces, B type groups of Artin-Brieskorn, and allow us to study all these groups with common point of view. We present some results on the structure of the braid groups of genetic codes, describe normal form of words, torsion, and some results on widths of the verbal subgroups. Also we prove that Scott's system of defining relations for the br…
Wajnryb proved that the mapping class group of an orientable surface is generated by two elements. We prove that one of these generators can be taken as a Dehn twist. We also prove that the extended mapping class group is generated by two elements, again one of which is a Dehn twist. Another result we prove is that the mapping class groups are also generated by two elements of finite order.
We classify all torsion-free derived arithmetic Fuchsian groups of genus two by commensurability class. In particular, we show that there exist no such groups arising from quaternion algebras over number fields of degree greater than 5. We also prove some results on the existence and form of maximal orders for a class of quaternion algebras related to these groups. Using these results in conjunction with a computer program, one can determine an explicit set of generators for each derived arithmetic Fuchsian group containing a torsion-free subgroup of genus two. We show this for a number of exa…
A. Borel proved that, if a finite group $F$ acts effectively and continuously on a closed aspherical manifold $M$ with centerless fundamental group $π_1(M)$, then a natural homomorphism $ψ$ from $F$ to the outer automorphism group ${\rm Out} π_1(M)$ of $π_1(M)$, called the associated abstract kernel, is a monomorphism. In this paper, we investigate to what extent Borel's theorem holds for a compact Lie group $G$ acting effectively and smoothly on a particular orientable aspherical manifold $N$ admitting a Riemannian metric $g_0$ of non-positive curvature in case that $π_1(N)$ has a non-trivial…
In the first part of this paper we prove that the mapping class subgroups generated by the $D$-th powers of Dehn twists (with $D\geq 2$) along a sparse collection of simple closed curves on an orientable surface are right angled Artin groups. The second part is devoted to power quotients, i.e. quotients by the normal subgroup generated by the $D$-th powers of all elements of the mapping class groups. We show first that for infinitely many $D$ the power quotient groups are non-trivial. On the other hand, if $4g+2$ does not divide $D$ then the associated power quotient of the mapping class group…
We construct and study a new family of TQFTs based on nilpotent highest weight representations of quantum sl(2) at a root of unity indexed by generic complex numbers. This extends to cobordisms the non-semi-simple invariants defined in (arXiv:1202.3553) including the Kashaev invariant of links. Here the modular category framework does not apply and we use the ``universal construction''. Our TQFT provides a monoidal functor from a category of surfaces and their cobordisms into the category of graded finite dimensional vector spaces and their degree 0-morphisms and depends on the choice of a roo…
