Given a finite subgroup G of the mapping class group of a surface S, the Nielsen realization problem asks whether G can be realized as a finite group of homeomorphisms of S. In 1983, Kerckhoff showed that for S a finite-type surface, any finite subgroup G may be realized as a group of isometries of some hyperbolic metric on S. We extend Kerckhoff's result to orientable, infinite-type surfaces. As applications, we classify torsion elements in the mapping class group of the plane minus a Cantor set, and also show that topological groups containing sequences of torsion elements limiting to the identity do not embed continuously into the mapping class group of S. Finally, we show that compact subgroups of the mapping class group of S are finite, and locally compact subgroups are discrete.
The main goal of this paper is to give the first examples of equivariant aspherical Poincare complexes, that are not realized by group actions on closed aspherical manifolds $M$. These will also provide new counterexamples to the Nielsen realization problem about lifting homotopy actions of finite groups to honest group actions. Our examples show that one cannot guarantee that a given action of a finitely generated group $π$ on Euclidean space extends to an action of $Π$, a group containing $π$ as a subgroup of finite index, even when all the torsion of $Π$ lives in $π$.
For a based manifold (M,*), the question of whether the surjection Diff(M,*) \rightarrow π_0 Diff(M,*) admits a section is an example of a Nielsen realization problem. This question is related to a question about flat connections on M-bundles and is meaningful for M of any dimension. In dimension 2, Bestvina-Church-Souto showed a section does not exist when M is closed and has genus g\ge 2. Their techniques are cohomological and certain aspects are specific to surfaces. We give new cohomological techniques to generalize their result to many locally symmetric manifolds. The main tools include C…
For a 3-manifold M, the twist group Twist(M) is the subgroup of the mapping class group Mod(M) generated by twists about embedded 2-spheres. We study the Nielsen realization problem for subgroups of Twist(M). We prove that a nontrivial subgroup G<Twist(M) is realized by diffeomorphisms if and only if G is cyclic and M is a connected sum of lens spaces. We also apply our methods to the Burnside problem for 3-manifolds and show that Diff(M) does not contain an infinite torsion group when M is reducible and not a connected sum of lens spaces.
We consider finite group-actions on 3-manifolds $\cal H_g$ obtained as the connected sum of $g$ copies of $S^2 \times S^1$, with free fundamental group $F_g$ of rank $g$. We prove that, for $g > 1$, a finite group of diffeomorphisms of $\cal H_g$ inducing a trivial action on homology is cyclic. As a consequence, no non-cyclic subgroup of the twist subgroup of the mapping class group of $\cal H_g$ (generated by Dehn twists along embedded 2-spheres) can be realized by diffeomorphisms (in the sense of the Nielsen realization problem). We also discuss when a finite subgroup of the outer automorphi…
There is the problem, whether for a given virtually torsionfree discrete group $Γ$ there exists a cocompact proper topological $Γ$-manifold, which is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the classifying space for proper actions. It is related to Nielsen's Realization and to the problem of Brown, whether there is a d-dimensional model for the classifying space for proper actions, if the underlying group has virtually cohomological dimension d. Assuming that the expected manifold model has a zero-dimensional singular set, we solve the problem in the Poincaré category and obtain new results about…
Let $K$ be the K3 manifold. In this note, we discuss two methods to prove that certain generalized Miller--Morita--Mumford classes for smooth bundles with fiber $K$ are non-zero. As a consequence, we fill a gap in a paper of the first author, and prove that the homomorphism $Diff(K)\to π_0 Diff(K)$ does not split. One of the two methods of proof uses a result of Franke on the stable cohomology of arithmetic groups that strengthens work of Borel, and may be of independent interest.
We introduce Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on Teicmüller spaces of surfaces of infinite type. The definition is relative to a given pair of pants decomposition of the surface. We start by establishing conditions under which any pair of pants decomposition on a hyperbolic surface of infinite type can be turned into a geometric decomposition, that is, a decomposition into hyperbolic pairs of pants. This is expressed in terms of a condition we introduce and which we call Nielsen convexity. This condition is related to Nielsen cores of Fuchsian groups. We use this to define the Fenchel-Nielsen Teich…
The Nielsen Conjecture for Homeomorphisms asserts that any homeomorphism $f$ of a closed manifold is isotopic to a map realizing the Nielsen number of $f$, which is a lower bound for the number of fixed points among all maps homotopic to $f$. The main theorem of this paper proves this conjecture for all orientation preserving maps on geometric or Haken 3-manifolds. It will also be shown that on many manifolds all maps are isotopic to fixed point free maps. The proof is based on the understanding of homeomorphisms on 2-orbifolds and 3-manifolds. Thurston's classification of surface homeomorphis…
The smooth (resp. metric and complex) Nielsen Realization Problem for K3 surfaces $M$ asks: when can a finite group $G$ of mapping classes of $M$ be realized by a finite group of diffeomorphisms (resp. isometries of a Ricci-flat metric, or automorphisms of a complex structure)? We solve the metric and complex versions of Nielsen Realization, and we solve the smooth version almost completely for involutions. Unlike the case of $2$-manifolds, some $G$ are realizable and some are not, and the answer depends on the category of structure preserved. In particular, Dehn twists are not realizable by f…
We study Nielsen equivalence classes of generating pairs of Kleinian groups and HNN-extensions. We establish the following facts: - Hyperbolic 2-bridge knot groups have infinitely many Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - For any natural number N there is a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold whose fundamental group has N distinct Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - Two pairs of elements of a fundamental group of an HNN-extension are Nielsen equivalent iff they are so for the obvious reasons.
The Nielsen Realization problem asks when the group homomorphism from Diff(M) to pi_0 Diff(M) admits a section. For M a closed surface, Kerckhoff proved that a section exists over any finite subgroup, but Morita proved that if the genus is large enough then no section exists over the entire mapping class group. We prove the first nonexistence theorem of this type in dimension 4: if M is a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold which contains a K3 surface as a connected summand then no section exists over the whole of the mapping class group. This is done by showing that certain obstructions lying i…
We study the action of the mapping class group on the real homology of finite covers of a topological surface. We use the homological representation of the mapping class to construct a faithful infinite-dimensional representation of the mapping class group. We show that this representation detects the Nielsen-Thurston classification of each mapping class. We then discuss some examples that occur in the theory of braid groups and develop an analogous theory for automorphisms of free groups. We close with some open problems.
The goal of this paper is to construct distinct trisections of the same genus on a fixed 4-manifold. For every $k \geq 2$, we construct $2^{k}-1$ non-diffeomorphic $(3k,k)$-trisections on infinitely many 4-manifolds. Here, the manifolds are spun Seifert fiber spaces and the trisections come from Meier's spun trisections. The technique used to distinguish the trisections parallels an established technique for distinguishing Heegaard splittings. In particular, we show that the Nielsen classes of the generators of the fundamental group, obtained from spines of the 4-dimensional 1-handlebodies of …
We discuss recent results and open questions on the broad theme of (Nielsen) realization problems. Beyond realizing subgroups of mapping class groups, there are many other natural instances where one can ask if a surjection from a group of diffeomorphisms of a manifold to another group admits a section over particular subgroups. This survey includes many open problems, and some short proofs of new results that are illustrative of key techniques; drawing attention to parallels between problems arising in different areas.
We show that the Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes of the sphere with four marked points is determined by the quantum SU(n)-representations, for any fixed integer $n \geq 2$. In the Pseudo-Anosov case we also show that the stretching factor is a limit of eigenvalues of (non-unitary) SU(2)-TQFT representation matrices. It follows that at big enough levels, Pseudo-Anosov mapping classes are represented by matrices of infinite order.
The mapping class group of a genus $g$ surface $Σ_{g,1}$ with one boundary component is known to have a simple yet infinite presentation with generators given by elementary moves called Whitehead moves on so-called marked bordered fatgraphs. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm called "fatgraph Nielsen reduction" which, from the action of a mapping class $φ\in MC_{g,1}$ of $Σ_{g,1}$ on the fundamental group $π_1(Σ_{g,1})$ of $Σ_{g,1}$, determines a sequence of Whitehead moves representing $φ$ beginning at any choice of marked bordered fatgraph. As a consequence, this leads to an algorithm …
We study the asymptotic behavior of the sequence of the Nielsen numbers $\{N(f^k)\}$, the essential periodic orbits of $f$ and the homotopy minimal periods of $f$ by using the Nielsen theory of maps $f$ on infra-solvmanifolds of type $R$. We give a linear lower bound for the number of essential periodic orbits of such a map, which sharpens well-known results of Shub and Sullivan for periodic points and of Babenko and Bogatyi for periodic orbits. We also verify that a constant multiple of infinitely many prime numbers occur as homotopy minimal periods of such a map.
We show that the length spectrum metric on Teichmüller spaces of surfaces of infinite topological type is complete. We also give related results and examples that compare the length spectrum Teichmüller space with quasiconformal and the Fenchel-Nielsen Teichmüller spaces on such surfaces
In this paper, the Teichm{ü}ller spaces of surfaces appear from two points of views: the conformal category and the hyperbolic category. In contrast to the case of surfaces of topologically finite type, the Teichm{ü}ller spaces associated to surfaces of topologically infinite type depend on the choice of a base structure. In the setting of surfaces of infinite type, the Teichm{ü}ller spaces can be endowed with different distance functions such as the length-spectrum distance, the bi-Lipschitz distance, the Fenchel-Nielsen distance, the Teichm{ü}ller distance and there are other distance functi…
Let $X_0$ be an infinite genus hyperbolic surface (whose boundary components, if any, are closed geodesics or punctures) which has an upper bounded pants decomposition. The length spectrum Teichmüller space $T_{ls}(X_0)$ consists of all surfaces $X$ homeomorphic to $X_0$ such that the ratios of the corresponding simple closed geodesics are uniformly bounded from below and from above. Alessandrini, Liu, Papadopoulos and Su described the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for $T_{ls}(X_0)$ and using these coordinates they proved that $T_{ls}(X_0)$ is path connected. We use the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinat…
Nielsen realization problem for the mapping class group $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ asks whether the natural projection $p_g: \text{Homeo}_+(S_g)\to \text{Mod}(S_g)$ has a section. While all the previous results use torsion elements in an essential way, in this paper, we focus on the much more difficult problem of realization of torsion-free subgroups of $\text{Mod}(S_g)$. The main result of this paper is that the Torelli group has no realization inside the area-preserving homeomorphisms.
A Riemann surface $X$ is said to be of \emph{parabolic type} if it supports a Green's function. Equivalently, the geodesic flow on the unit tangent of $X$ is ergodic. Given a Riemann surface $X$ of arbitrary topological type and a hyperbolic pants decomposition of $X$ we obtain sufficient conditions for parabolicity of $X$ in terms of the Fenchel-Nielsen parameters of the decomposition. In particular, we initiate the study of the effect of twist parameters on parabolicity. A key ingredient in our work is the notion of \textit{non standard half-collar} about a hyperbolic geodesic. We show that …
Let $ \text{Mod}(S_g)$ denote the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$, and let $f\in \text{Mod}(S_g)$ be of finite order. We give an inductive procedure to construct an explicit hyperbolic structure on $S_g$ that realizes $f$ as an isometry. In other words, this procedure yields an explicit solution to the Nielsen realization problem for cyclic subgroups of $ \text{Mod}(S_g)$. Furthermore, we give a purely combinatorial perspective by showing how certain finite order mapping classes can be viewed as fat graph automorphisms. As an application of our rea…
Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ denote the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. Given a finite subgroup $H$ of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, let $\mathrm{Fix}(H)$ denote the set of fixed points induced by the action of $H$ on the Teichmüller space $\mathrm{Teich}(S_g)$. When $H$ is cyclic with $|H| \geq 3$, we show that $\mathrm{Fix}(H)$ admits a decomposition as a product of two-dimensional strips at least one of which is of bounded width. For an arbitrary $H$ with at least one generator of order $\geq 3$, we derive a computable optimal upper bound for the restriction…
We study dismantling properties of the arc, disc and sphere graphs. We prove that any finite subgroup H of the mapping class group of a surface with punctures, the handlebody group, or Out(F_n) fixes a filling (resp. simple) clique in the appropriate graph. We deduce realisation theorems, in particular the Nielsen Realisation Problem in the case of a nonempty set of punctures. We also prove that infinite H have either empty or contractible fixed point sets in the corresponding complexes. Furthermore, we show that their spines are classifying spaces for proper actions for mapping class groups a…
It has been known since the time of Nielsen that the mapping class group $\text{Mod}_{g,1}$ of a surface of genus $g$ and one puncture acts faithfully by homeomorphisms on the circle. In this note, we show that this standard representation of the mapping class group is not rigid, precisely, if $G<\text{Mod}_{g,1}$ is a finite index subgroup then there exist infinitely many non--conjugate faithful representations $G\to \text{Homeo}^+(S^1)$. We thus answer a question of B. Farb.
Let $Γ$ be a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group $MCG(Σ)$ of a closed orientable surface $Σ$, possibly with punctures. We give a precise condition (in terms of the Nielsen-Thurston decomposition) when an element $g\inΓ$ has positive stable commutator length. In addition, we show that in these situations the stable commutator length, if nonzero, is uniformly bounded away from 0. The method works for certain subgroups of infinite index as well and we show $scl$ is uniformly positive on the nontrivial elements of the Torelli group. The proofs use our earlier construction in the paper…
We show that the pure mapping class group $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ of a non-orientable closed surface of genus $g\geqslant 2$ with $k\geqslant 1$ marked points has $p$-periodic cohomology for each odd prime $p$ for which $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ has $p$-torsion. Using the Yagita invariant and the cohomology classes obtained by the representation of subgroups of order $p$, we obtain that the $p$-period is less than or equal to $4$ when $g\geqslant 3$ and $k\geqslant 1$. Moreover, combining the Nielsen realization theorem and a characterization of the $p$-period given in terms of normalizers and centr…
