A Riemann surface $X$ is said to be of \emph{parabolic type} if it supports a Green's function. Equivalently, the geodesic flow on the unit tangent of $X$ is ergodic. Given a Riemann surface $X$ of arbitrary topological type and a hyperbolic pants decomposition of $X$ we obtain sufficient conditions for parabolicity of $X$ in terms of the Fenchel-Nielsen parameters of the decomposition. In particular, we initiate the study of the effect of twist parameters on parabolicity. A key ingredient in our work is the notion of \textit{non standard half-collar} about a hyperbolic geodesic. We show that the modulus of such a half-collar is much larger than the modulus of a standard half-collar as the hyperbolic length of the core geodesic tends to infinity. Moreover, the modulus of the annulus obtained by gluing two non standard half-collars depends on the twist parameter, unlike in the case of standard collars. Our results are sharp in many cases. For instance, for zero-twist flute surfaces as well as half-twist flute surfaces with concave sequences of lengths our results provide a complete characterization of parabolicity in terms of the length parameters. It follows that parabolicity is equivalent to completeness in these cases. Applications to other topological types such as surfaces with infinite genus and one end (a.k.a. the infinite Loch-Ness monster), the ladder surface, Abelian covers of compact surfaces are also studied.
We cut a hyperbolic surface of finite area along some analytic simple closed curves, and glue in cylinders of varying moduli. We prove that as the moduli of the glued cylinders go to infinity, the Fenchel-Nielsen twist coordinates for the resulting surface around those cylinders converge.
Given a topological orientable surface of finite or infinite type equipped with a pair of pants decomposition $\mathcal{P}$ and given a base complex structure $X$ on $S$, there is an associated deformation space of complex structures on $S$, which we call the Fenchel-Nielsen Teichmüller space associated to the pair $(\mathcal{P},X)$. This space carries a metric, which we call the Fenchel-Nielsen metric, defined using Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. We studied this metric in the papers \cite{ALPSS}, \cite{various} and \cite{local}, and we compared it to the classical Teichmüller metric (defined us…
Kahn and Markovic \cite{KahnMark} proved that the fundamental group of each closed hyperbolic three manifold contains a closed surface subgroup. One of the main ingredients in their proof is a theorem which states that an assignment of nearly real, complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates to the cuffs of a pants decomposition of a closed surface $S$ induces a quasiFuchsian representation of the fundamental group of $S$. We give a new proof of this theorem with a slightly stronger conditions on the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates and explain how to use the exponential mixing of the geodesic flow on a cl…
Let $Σ_g$ be a compact, connected, orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$. We ask for a parametrization of the discrete, faithful, totally loxodromic representations in the deformation space ${\rm Hom}(π_1(Σ_g), {\rm SU}(3,1))/{\rm SU}(3,1)$. We show that such a representation, under some hypothesis, can be determined by $30g-30$ real parameters.
We introduce Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on Teicmüller spaces of surfaces of infinite type. The definition is relative to a given pair of pants decomposition of the surface. We start by establishing conditions under which any pair of pants decomposition on a hyperbolic surface of infinite type can be turned into a geometric decomposition, that is, a decomposition into hyperbolic pairs of pants. This is expressed in terms of a condition we introduce and which we call Nielsen convexity. This condition is related to Nielsen cores of Fuchsian groups. We use this to define the Fenchel-Nielsen Teich…
We explicitly show that the Poisson bracket on the set of shear coordinates introduced by V.V. Fock in 1997 induces the Fenchel--Nielsen bracket on the set of gluing parameters (length and twist parameters) for pairs of pants decomposition for Riemann surfaces with holes $Σ_{g,s}$. We generalize these structures to the case of Riemann surfaces $Σ_{g,s,n}$ with holes and bordered cusps.
In this paper we combine our recent work on regular globally hyperbolic maximal anti-de Sitter structures with the classical theory of globally hyperbolic maximal Cauchy-compact anti-de Sitter manifolds in order to define an augmented moduli space. Moreover, we introduce a coordinate system in this space that resembles the complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian manifolds.
We explain that spectral networks are a unifying framework that incorporates both shear (Fock-Goncharov) and length-twist (Fenchel-Nielsen) coordinate systems on moduli spaces of flat SL(2,C) connections, in the following sense. Given a spectral network W on a punctured Riemann surface C, we explain the process of "abelianization" which relates flat SL(2)-connections (with an additional structure called "W-framing") to flat C*-connections on a covering. For any W, abelianization gives a construction of a local Darboux coordinate system on the moduli space of W-framed flat connections. There ar…
Let $X$ be an infinite hyperbolic surface endowed with an upper bounded geodesic pants decomposition. Alessandrini, Liu, Papadopoulos, Su and Sun \cite{ALPSS}, \cite{ALPS} parametrized the quasiconformal Teichmüller space $T_{qc}(X)$ and the length spectrum Teichmüller space $T_{ls}(X)$ using the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. A quasiconformal map $f:X\to Y$ is said to be {\it asymptotically conformal} if its Beltrami coefficient $μ=\bar{\partial}f/\partial f$ converges to zero at infinity. The space of all asymptotically conformal maps up to homotopy and post-composition by conformal maps is ca…
Let $X_0$ be an infinite genus hyperbolic surface (whose boundary components, if any, are closed geodesics or punctures) which has an upper bounded pants decomposition. The length spectrum Teichmüller space $T_{ls}(X_0)$ consists of all surfaces $X$ homeomorphic to $X_0$ such that the ratios of the corresponding simple closed geodesics are uniformly bounded from below and from above. Alessandrini, Liu, Papadopoulos and Su described the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for $T_{ls}(X_0)$ and using these coordinates they proved that $T_{ls}(X_0)$ is path connected. We use the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinat…
We consider conditions on the Fenchel-Nielsen parameters of a Riemann surface $X$ that guarantee the surface $X$ is of parabolic type. An interesting class of Riemann surfaces for this problem is the one with finitely many topological ends. In this case the length part of the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates can go to infinity for {parabolic $X$}. When the surface $X$ is end symmetric, we prove that {$X$ being parabolic} is equivalent to the covering group being of the first kind. Then we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates of a half-twist symmetric surface $…
Let $Sp(2,1)$ be the isometry group of the quaternionic hyperbolic plane ${{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^2$. An element $g$ in $Sp(2,1)$ is `hyperbolic' if it fixes exactly two points on the boundary of ${{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^2$. We classify pairs of hyperbolic elements in $Sp(2,1)$ up to conjugation. A hyperbolic element of $Sp(2,1)$ is called `loxodromic' if it has no real eigenvalue. We show that the set of $Sp(2,1)$ conjugation orbits of irreducible loxodromic pairs is a $(\mathbb C {\mathbb P}^1)^4$-bundle over a topological space that is locally a semi-analytic subspace of ${\mathbb R}^{13}$. We …
We consider complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on the quasi-Fuchsian space of punctured tori. These coordinates arise from a generalisation of Kra's plumbing construction and are related to earthquakes on Teichmueller space. They also allow us to interpolate between two coordinate systems on Teichmueller space, namely the classical Fuchsian space with Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates and the Maskit embedding. We also show how they relate to the pleating coordinates of Keen and Series.

We prove that there are Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for the Teichmueller space of a finite area hyperbolic surface with respect to which the length functions are convex.
In this paper, the Teichm{ü}ller spaces of surfaces appear from two points of views: the conformal category and the hyperbolic category. In contrast to the case of surfaces of topologically finite type, the Teichm{ü}ller spaces associated to surfaces of topologically infinite type depend on the choice of a base structure. In the setting of surfaces of infinite type, the Teichm{ü}ller spaces can be endowed with different distance functions such as the length-spectrum distance, the bi-Lipschitz distance, the Fenchel-Nielsen distance, the Teichm{ü}ller distance and there are other distance functi…
We show that the length spectrum metric on Teichmüller spaces of surfaces of infinite topological type is complete. We also give related results and examples that compare the length spectrum Teichmüller space with quasiconformal and the Fenchel-Nielsen Teichmüller spaces on such surfaces
In this paper, we introduce a new parameter, the affine twist parameter for the affine deformation of a sphere with holes. We show that the affine deformation space can be parametrized by Margulis invariants and affine twist parameters. The affine twist parameter is canonically regarded as a correspondence to the Fenchel-Nielsen twist parameter in Teichmuller theory.
Given a Riemann surface with boundary S, the lengths of a maximal system of disjoint simple geodesic arcs on S that start and end at the boundary of S perpendicularly are coordinates on the Teichmueller space T(S). We compute the Weil-Petersson Poisson structure on T(S) in this system of coordinates and we prove that it limits pointwise to the piecewise-linear Poisson structure defined by Kontsevich on the arc complex of S. As a byproduct of the proof, we obtain a formula for the first-order variation of the distance between two closed geodesics under Fenchel-Nielsen deformation.
Identifying parallel sides of a collection of Euclidean polygons yields a flat surface with cone points of angles multiples of 2 pi, naturally a compact Riemann surface but also an algebraic curve, and a hyperbolic surface. In general two different metrics on a surface have no geodesic arcs in common, but in special cases the surface is decomposed into polygons geodesic for both the flat and the hyperbolic metric. This is the case for certain surfaces which are translation and half-turn tiled by an Euclidean rectangle. We explore them in this paper. Their multi-geodesic tessellation provides a…
There are several Teichmüller spaces associated to a surface of infinite topological type, after the choice of a particular basepoint (a complex or a hyperbolic structure on the surface). These spaces include the quasiconformal Teichmüller space, the length spectrum Teichmüller space, the Fenchel-Nielsen Teichmüller space, and there are others. In general, these spaces are set-theoretically different. An important question is therefore to understand relations between these spaces. Each of these spaces is equipped with its own metric, and under some hypotheses, there are inclusions between thes…
