We show that the Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes of the sphere with four marked points is determined by the quantum SU(n)-representations, for any fixed integer $n \geq 2$. In the Pseudo-Anosov case we also show that the stretching factor is a limit of eigenvalues of (non-unitary) SU(2)-TQFT representation matrices. It follows that at big enough levels, Pseudo-Anosov mapping classes are represented by matrices of infinite order.
We classify elements of a cluster modular group into three types. We characterize them in terms of fixed point property of the action on the tropical compactifications associated with the corresponding cluster ensemble. The characterization gives an analogue of the Nielsen-Thurston classification theory on the mapping class group of a surface.
We study the action of the mapping class group on the real homology of finite covers of a topological surface. We use the homological representation of the mapping class to construct a faithful infinite-dimensional representation of the mapping class group. We show that this representation detects the Nielsen-Thurston classification of each mapping class. We then discuss some examples that occur in the theory of braid groups and develop an analogous theory for automorphisms of free groups. We close with some open problems.
In this article, we propose two algorithms for determining the Nielsen-Thurston classification of a mapping class $ψ$ on a surface $S$. We start with a finite generating set $X$ for the mapping class group and a word $ψ$ in $\langle X \rangle$. We show that if $ψ$ represents a reducible mapping class in $\Mod(S)$ then $ψ$ admits a canonical reduction system whose total length is exponential in the word length of $ψ$. We use this fact to find the canonical reduction system of $ψ$. We also prove an effective conjugacy separability result for $π_1(S)$ which allows us to lift the action of $ψ$ to …
We give a proof of the Neilsen-Thurston classification theorem of a homeomorphism f of a standard surface of finite type as either periodic, pseudo-Anosov, or reducible. In the periodic case, we show that there exists an integer n>0 such that f is isotopic to h with h^n isotopic to the identity. This is the weaker version of the Nielsen-Thurston theorem.
We classify Legendrian knots of topological type $7_6$ having maximal Thurston--Bennequin number confirming the corresponding conjectures of Chongchitmate--Ng.
We show that solutions of Thurston equation on triangulated 3-manifolds in a commutative ring carry topological information. We also introduce a homogeneous Thurston equation and a commutative ring associated to triangulated 3-manifolds.
In this paper, we develop a way to extract information about a random walk associated with a typical Thurston's construction. We first observe that a typical Thurston's construction entails a free group of rank 2. We also present a proof of the spectral theorem for random walks associated with Thurston's construction that have finite second moment with respect to the Teichmüller metric. Its general case was remarked by Dahmani and Horbez. Finally, under a hypothesis not involving moment conditions, we prove that random walks eventually become pseudo-Anosov. As an application, we first discuss …
We demonstrate that the question whether or not a given postcritically finite topological ramified covering map of the 2-sphere is Thurston equivalent to a rational map is algorithmically decidable.
There is the problem, whether for a given virtually torsionfree discrete group $Γ$ there exists a cocompact proper topological $Γ$-manifold, which is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the classifying space for proper actions. It is related to Nielsen's Realization and to the problem of Brown, whether there is a d-dimensional model for the classifying space for proper actions, if the underlying group has virtually cohomological dimension d. Assuming that the expected manifold model has a zero-dimensional singular set, we solve the problem in the Poincaré category and obtain new results about…
Nielsen reduction is an algorithm which decomposes any automorphism of a free group into a product of elementary Nielsen transformations. While this may be applied to a mapping class of a surface $S_{g,1}$ with one boundary component, the resulting decomposition in general will not have a topological interpretation. In this survey, we discuss a variation called fatgraph Nielsen reduction which decomposes such a mapping class into elementary Nielsen transformations interpreted as rearrangements of polygon domains for $S_{g,1}$ described by systems of arcs in $S_{g,1}$. These elementary moves ge…
M. Kontsevich proposed a topological construction for an invariant Z of rational homology 3-spheres using configuration space integrals. G. Kuperberg and D. Thurston proved that Z is a universal real finite type invariant for integral homology spheres in the sense of Ohtsuki, Habiro and Goussarov. We discuss the behaviour of Z under rational homology handlebodies replacements. The explicit formulae that we present generalize a sum formula obtained by the author for the Casson-Walker invariant in 1994. They allow us to identify the degree one term of Z with the Walker invariant for rational hom…
A long-standing conjecture asserts that any Anosov diffeomorphism of a closed manifold is finitely covered by a diffeomorphism which is topologically conjugate to a hyperbolic automorphism of a nilpotent manifold. In this paper, we show that any closed 4-manifold that carries a Thurston geometry and is not finitely covered by a product of two aspherical surfaces does not support (transitive) Anosov diffeomorphisms.
We classify isotopy classes of automorphisms (self-homeomorphisms) of 3-manifolds satisfying the Thurston Geometrization Conjecture. The classification is similar to the classification of automorphisms of surfaces developed by Nielsen and Thurston, except an automorphism of a reducible manifold must first be written as a suitable composition of two automorphisms, each of which fits into our classification. Given an automorphism, the goal is to show, loosely speaking, either that it is periodic, or that it can be decomposed on a surface invariant up to isotopy, or that it has a "dynamically nic…
Given a finite subgroup G of the mapping class group of a surface S, the Nielsen realization problem asks whether G can be realized as a finite group of homeomorphisms of S. In 1983, Kerckhoff showed that for S a finite-type surface, any finite subgroup G may be realized as a group of isometries of some hyperbolic metric on S. We extend Kerckhoff's result to orientable, infinite-type surfaces. As applications, we classify torsion elements in the mapping class group of the plane minus a Cantor set, and also show that topological groups containing sequences of torsion elements limiting to the id…
Periodic solutions of the planar $N$-body problem determine braids through the trajectory of $N$ bodies. Braid types can be used to classify periodic solutions. According to the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface automorphisms, braids fall into three types: periodic, reducible and pseudo-Anosov. To a braid of pseudo-Anosov type, there is an associated stretch factor greater than 1, and this is a conjugacy invariant of braids. In 2006, the third author discovered a family of multiple choreographic solutions of the planar $2n$-body problem. We prove that braids obtained from the solution…
The fixed point index of topological fixed point theory is a well studied integer-valued algebraic invariant of a mapping which can be characterized by a small set of axioms. The coincidence index is an extension of the concept to topological (Nielsen) coincidence theory. We demonstrate that three natural axioms are sufficient to characterize the coincidence index in the setting of continuous mappings on oriented differentiable manifolds, the most common setting for Nielsen coincidence theory.
We use an estimate on the Thurston--Bennequin invariant of a Legendrian link in terms of its Kauffman-polynomial to show that links of topological unknots, e.g. the Borromean rings or the Whithead link, may not be represented by Legendrian links of Legendrian unknots.
For any pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism on a closed orientable surface $S$ of genus greater than one, it is known by the work of Bers and Thurston that the topological entropy agrees with the translation distance on the Teichmüller space with respect to the Teichmüller metric. In this paper, we consider random walks on the mapping class group of $S$. The drift of a random walk is defined as the translation distance of the random walk. We define the topological entropy of a random walk and prove that it almost surely agrees with the drift on the Teichmüller space with respect to the Teichmüller me…
