We use Klyachko's methods to prove that the natural map G to G-hat, where G is a torsion-free group and G-hat is obtained by adding a new generator t and a new relator w, is surjective only if w is conjugate to gt or gt^{-1} for some g in G. This solves a special case of the surjectivity problem for group extensions, raised by Cohen [Whitehead torsion, group extensions, and Zeeman's conjecture in high dimensions, Topology, 16 (1977) 79--88].
We obtain a number of results regarding freeness, quasiconvexity and separability for subgroups of Coxeter groups, Artin groups and one-relator groups with torsion.
We show that any one-relator group $G=F/\langle\langle w\rangle\rangle$ with torsion is coherent -- i.e., that every finitely generated subgroup of $G$ is finitely presented -- answering a 1974 question of Baumslag in this case.
We prove that one-relator groups with torsion are hereditarily conjugacy separable. Our argument is based on a combination of recent results of Dani Wise and the first author. As a corollary we obtain that any quasiconvex subgroup of a one-relator group with torsion is also conjugacy separable.
In this paper we use JSJ-decompositions to formalise a folk conjecture recorded by Pride on the structure of one-relator groups with torsion. We prove a slightly weaker version of the conjecture, which implies that the structure of one-relator groups with torsion closely resemble the structure of torsion-free hyperbolic groups.
We generalize results of Lauer and Wise to show that a one-relator product of locally indicable groups whose defining relator has exponent at least 4 admits a proper and cocompact action on a CAT(0) cube complex if the factors do.
The main result of this paper is a complete classification of the outer automorphism groups of two-generator, one-relator groups with torsion. To this classification we apply recent algorithmic results of Dahmani--Guirardel, which yields an algorithm to compute the isomorphism class of the outer automorphism group of a given two-generator, one-relator group with torsion.
We introduce the notion of a bicollapsible 2-complex. This allows us to generalize the hyperbolicity of one-relator groups with torsion to a broader class of groups with presentations whose relators are proper powers. We also prove that many such groups act properly and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex.
Adding two generators and one arbitrary relator to a nontrivial torsion-free group, we always obtain an SQ-universal group. In the course of the proof of this theorem, we obtain some other results of independent interest. For instance, adding one generator and one relator in which the exponent sum of the additional generator is one to a free product of two nontrivial torsion-free groups, we also obtain an SQ-universal group. Key words: relative presentations, one-relator groups, SQ-universality, equations over groups.
We prove a rank 1 version of the Hanna Neumann Theorem. This shows that every one-relator 2-complex without torsion has the nonpositive immersion property. The proof generalizes to staggered and reducible 2-complexes.
A homogeneous nilpotent Lie group has a scaling automorphism determined by a grading of its Lie algebra. Many proofs of upper bounds for the Dehn function of such a group depend on being able to fill curves with discs compatible with this grading; the area of such discs changes predictably under the scaling automorphism. In this paper, we present combinatorial methods for finding such bounds. Using this method, we give new proofs of some results on Dehn functions of nilpotent groups, prove theorems on central powers and certain quotients of nilpotent groups, and construct the first example of …
We investigate systems of equations and the first-order theory of one-relator monoids. We describe a family $\mathcal{F}$ of one-relator monoids of the form $\langle A\mid w=1\rangle$ where for each monoid $M$ in $\mathcal{F}$, the longstanding open problem of decidability of word equations with length constraints reduces to the Diophantine problem (i.e.\ decidability of systems of equations) in $M$. We achieve this result by finding an interpretation in $M$ of a free monoid, using only systems of equations together with length relations. It follows that each monoid in $\mathcal{F}$ has undeci…
We prove that if $G$ is a free-torsion group and $w(t)$ is a word in the alphabet $G \sqcup \{t^{\pm 1}\}$ with exponent sum one, then the group $<G,t|(w(t))^k = 1>$, where $k \geq 2$, is relatively hyperbolic with respect to $G$.
We apply the method of Arzhantseva-Ol'shanskii to prove that for an exponentially generic (in the sense of Ol'shanskii) class of one-relator groups the isomorphism problem is solvable in at most exponential time. This is obtained as a corollary of our more general result that for any fixed integers $m>1, n>0$ there is an exponentially generic class of $m$-generator $n$-relator groups where every group has only one Nielsen equivalence class of $m$-tuples generating non-free subgroups. This means that a group $G$ in this class has has only one non-free $m$-generated subgroup, namely $G$ itself. …
In this paper we introduce a common framework for describing the topological part of the Baum-Connes conjecture for a wide class of groups. We compute the Bredon homology for groups with aspherical presentation, one-relator quotients of products of locally indicable groups, extensions of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ by cyclic groups, and fuchsian groups. We take advantage of the torsion structure of these groups to use appropriate models of the universal space for proper actions which allow us, in turn, to extend some technology defined by Mislin in the case of one-relator groups.
We introduce the notion of strictly systolic angled complexes. They generalize Januszkiewickz and Świątkowski's $7$-systolic simplicial complexes and also their metric counterparts, which appear as natural analogues to Huang and Osajda's metrically systolic simplicial complexes in the context of negative curvature. We prove that strictly systolic angled complexes and the groups that act on them geometrically, together with their finitely presented subgroups, are hyperbolic. We use these complexes to study the geometry of one-relator groups without torsion, and prove hyperbolicity of such group…
Relying on the theory of agrarian invariants introduced in previous work, we solve a conjecture of Friedl-Tillmann: we show that the marked polytopes they constructed for two-generator one-relator groups with nice presentations are independent of the presentations used. We also show that, when the groups are additionally torsion-free, the agrarian polytope encodes the splitting complexity of the group. This generalises theorems of Friedl-Tillmann and Friedl-Lück-Tillmann.
For every one-relator monoid $M = \langle A \mid u=v \rangle$ with $u, v \in A^*$ we construct a contractible $M$-CW complex and use it to build a projective resolution of the trivial module which is finitely generated in all dimensions. This proves that all one-relator monoids are of type ${\rm FP}_\infty$, answering positively a problem posed by Kobayashi in 2000. We also apply our results to classify the one-relator monoids of cohomological dimension at most $2$, and to describe the relation module, in the sense of Ivanov, of a torsion-free one-relator monoid presentation as an explicitly g…
Suppose that G is a nontrivial torsion-free group and w is a word over the alphabet G\cup\{x_1^{\pm1},...,x_n^{\pm1}\}. It is proved that for n\ge2 the group G=<G,x_1,x_2,...,x_n | w=1> always contains a nonabelian free subgroup. For n=1 the question about the existence of nonabelian free subgroups in G is answered completely in the unimodular case (i.e., when the exponent sum of x_1 in w is one). Some generalisations of these results are discussed.
We give a complete survey of a construction by Boone and Collins for embedding any finitely presented group into one with $8$ generators and $26$ relations. We show that this embedding preserves the set of orders of torsion elements, and in particular torsion-freeness. We combine this with the independent results of Belegradek and Chiodo to prove that there is an $8$-generator $26$-relator universal finitely presented torsion-free group (one into which all finitely presented torsion-free groups embed).
In this note we prove the claim given in the title. A group G is noncommutatively slender if each map from the fundamental group of the Hawaiian Earring to G factors through projection to a canonical free subgroup. Graham Higman, in his seminal 1952 paper, proved that free groups are noncommutatively slender. Such groups were first defined by K. Eda. Eda has asked which finitely presented groups are noncommutatively slender. This result demonstrates that random finitely presented groups in the few- relator sense of Gromov are noncommutatively slender.
Suppose that G is a nontrivial torsion-free group and w is a word in the alphabet G\cup\{x_1^{\pm1},...,x_n^{\pm1}\} such that the word w' obtained from w by erasing all letters belonging to G is not a proper power in the free group F(x_1,...,x_n). We show how to reduce the study of the relative presentation Ĝ=<G,x_1,x_2,...,x_n | w=1> to the case n=1. It turns out that an "n-variable" group Ĝ can be constructed from similar "one-variable" groups using an explicit construction similar to wreath product. As an illustration, we prove that, for n>1, the centre of Ĝ is always trivial. For n=1, the…
We consider the class of finitely generated groups whose relators are powers of commutators of the generators. This class contains as a small subclass graph groups (also called RAAGs), namely if all powers are one. Graph groups are the only torsionfree groups in this class. The generators are of infinite order, but we may also add torsion by assigning arbitrary orders to the generators. Then the above mentioned small subclass contains partially commutative Shephard groups. We show that these groups embed into Coxeter groups as finite index subgroups, thus establishing the linearity of these gr…
A group $G$ is said to be a {\it CSA}-group if all maximal abelian subgroups of $G$ are malnormal. The class of CSA groups is of interest because it contains torsion-free hyperbolic groups, groups acting freely on $Λ$-trees and groups with the same existential theory as free groups. CSA groups are also very closely related to the study of residually free groups and tensor completions. In this paper we investigate which free constructions (amalgamated products and HNN extensions) over CSA groups are again CSA. The results are applied, in particular, to show that a torsion-free one-relator group…
The statement ``no nonabelian simple group can be obtained from a nonsimple group by adding one generator and one relator" 1) is equivalent to the Kervaire--Laudenbach conjecture; 2) becomes true under the additional assumption that the initial nonsimple group is either finite or torsion-free. Key words: Kervaire--Laudenbach conjecture, relative presentations, simple groups, car motion, cocar comotion. AMS MSC: 20E32, 20F05, 20F06.
In [BB] Benjamin Baumslag proved that being fully residually free is equivalent to being residually free and commutative transitive (CT). Gaglione and Spellman [GS] and Remeslennikov [Re] showed that this is also equivalent to being universally free, that is, having the same universal theory as the class of nonabelian free groups. This result is one of the cornerstones of the proof of the Tarksi problems. In this paper we extend the class of groups for which Benjamin Baumslag's theorem is true, that is we consider classes of groups $\X$ for which being fully residually $\X$ is equivalent to be…
The Atiyah conjecture predicts that the L2-Betti numbers of a finite CW-complex with torsion-free fundamental group are integers. We show that the Atiyah conjecture holds (with an additional technical condition) for direct and inverse limits of directed systems of groups for which it is true. As a corollary it holds for residually torsion-free solvable groups, e.g. for pure braid groups or for positive 1-relator groups with torsion free abelianization. Putting everything together we establish a new class of groups for which the Atiyah conjecture holds, which contains all free groups and in par…
The Atiyah conjecture for a discrete group G states that the $L^2$-Betti numbers of a finite CW-complex with fundamental group G are integers if G is torsion-free and are rational with denominators determined by the finite subgroups of G in general. Here we establish conditions under which the Atiyah conjecture for a group G implies the Atiyah conjecture for every finite extension of G. The most important requirement is that the cohomology $H^*(G,\mathbb{Z}/p)$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of the p-adic completion of G for every prime p. An additional assumption is necessary, e.g. that the …
