The purpose of this paper is to study the action of the mapping class group on the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of a non-orientable surface into SU(2). The action is shown to be ergodic with respect to a natural measure. This measure is defined using the push-forward measure associated to a map defined by the presentation of the surface group. given by the pushforward of Haar measure. This result is an extension of earlier results of Goldman for orientable surfaces.
We review Mirzakhani's recursion for the volumes of moduli spaces of orientable surfaces, using a perspective that generalizes to non-orientable surfaces. The non-orientable version leads to divergences when the recursion is iterated, from regions in moduli space with small crosscaps. However, the integral kernels of the recursion are well-defined and they map precisely onto the loop equations for a matrix integral with orthogonal symmetry class and classical density of eigenvalues proportional to $\sinh(2π\sqrt{E})$ for $E>0$. The recursion can be used to compute regularized volumes with a cu…
We establish orbit equivalence rigidity for any ergodic, essentially free and measure-preserving action on a standard Borel space with a finite positive measure of the mapping class group for a compact orientable surface with higher complexity. We prove similar rigidity results for a finite direct product of mapping class groups as well.
Let S be a compact orientable surface with genus g and n boundary components d_1,...,d_n. Let b = (b_1, ..., b_n) where b_n lies in [-2,2]. Then the mapping class group of S acts on the relative SU(2)-character variety X comprising conjugacy classes of representations f of the fundamental group F of S, where trace f(d_i) = b_i. This action preserves a symplectic structure on the open dense smooth submanifold of X. corresponding to irreducible representations. This subset has full measure and is connected. In this note we use the symplectic geometry of this space to give a new proof that this a…
We prove some ergodic-theoretic rigidity properties of the action of SL(2,R) on moduli space. In particular, we show that any ergodic measure invariant under the action of the upper triangular subgroup of SL(2,R) is supported on an invariant affine submanifold. The main theorems are inspired by the results of several authors on unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces, and in particular by Ratner's seminal work.
In this paper, a generalized cusp is a properly convex manifold with strictly convex boundary that is diffeomorphic to $M \times [0, \infty)$ where $M$ is a closed Euclidean manifold. These are classified in [2]. The marked moduli space is homeomorphic to a subspace of the space of conjugacy classes of representations of $π_1(M)$. It has one description as a generalization of a trace-variety, and another description involving weight data that is similar to that used to describe semi-simple Lie groups. It is also a bundle over the space of Euclidean similarity (conformally flat) structures on $…
We prove that the geodesic flow for the Weil-Petersson metric on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces is ergodic (in fact Bernoulli) and has finite, positive metric entropy.
We show that mapping class groups associated to all types of real algebraic curves are virtual duality groups. We also deduce some results about the orbifold homotopy groups of the moduli spaces of real algebraic curves. We achieve these results by defining a new complex associated to a not necessarily orientable surface with boundary called the $\mathcal{A}\mathcal{B}\mathcal{C}$-complex. This complex encodes the intersection patterns of isotopy classes of essential simple arcs, boundary components, and essential simple closed curves. We show that this complex is homotopy equivalent to an inf…
We construct Weil-Petersson (WP) geodesic rays with minimal filling non-uniquely ergodic ending lamination which are recurrent to a compact subset of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. This construction shows that an analogue of the Masur's criterion for Teichmüller geodesics does not hold for WP geodesics.
Let S be an orientable, finite type surface with negative Euler characteristic. The augmented moduli space of convex real projective structures on S was first defined and topologized by the first author. In this article, we give an explicit description of this topology using explicit coordinates. More precisely, given every point in this augmented moduli space, we find explicit continuous coordinates on the quotient of a suitable open neighborhood about this point by a suitable subgroup of the mapping class group of S. Using this, we give a simpler proof of the fact that the augmented moduli s…
We show that the first Johnson subgroup of the mapping class group of a surface S of genus greater than one acts ergodically on the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of S in SU_2. Our proof relies on a local description of the latter space around the trivial representation and on the Taylor expansion of trace functions.
There is a canonical identification, due to the author, of a convex real projective structure on an orientable surface of genus g and a pair consisting of a conformal structure together with a holomorphic cubic differential on the surface. The Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves then suggests a partial compactification of the moduli space of convex real projective structures: Allow the Riemann surface to degenerate to a stable nodal curve on which there is a regular cubic differential. We construct convex real projective structures on open surfaces corresponding to t…

We prove that in genus bigger than $2$, the mapping class group action on $\mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb{C})$-characters is ergodic. This implies that almost every representation $π_1 S \longrightarrow \mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb{C})$ is the holonomy of a branched affine structure on $S$, where $S$ is a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$.
In this paper we consider the action of the mapping class group of a surface on the space of homomorphisms from the fundamental group of a surface into PSL(2,R). Goldman conjectured that when the surface is closed and of genus bigger than one, the action on non-Teichmuller connected components of the associated moduli space (i.e. the space of homomorphisms modulo conjugation) is ergodic. One approach to this question is to use sewing techniques which requires that one considers the action on the level of homomorphisms, and for surfaces with boundary. In this paper we consider the case of the o…
We extend Teichmueller dynamics to a flow on the total space of a flat bundle of deformation spaces of representations of the fundamental group of a fixed surface S in a Lie group G. The resulting dynamical system is a continuous version of the action of the mapping class group of S on the deformation space. We observe how ergodic properties of this action relate to this flow. When G is compact, this flow is strongly mixing over each component of the derormation space and of each stratum of the Teichmueller unit sphere bundle over the Riemann moduli space. We prove ergodicity for the analogous…
We give definitions of moduli spaces of framed, r-Spin and Pin surfaces. We apply earlier work of the author to show that each of these moduli spaces exhibits homological stability, and we identify the stable integral homology with that of certain infinite loop spaces in each case. We further show that these moduli spaces each have path components which are Eilenberg--MacLane spaces for the framed, r-Spin and Pin mapping class groups respectively, and hence we also identify the stable group homology of these groups. In particular: the stable framed mapping class group has trivial rational homo…
In two fundamental classical papers, Masur and Veech have independently proved that the Teichmueller geodesic flow acts ergodically on each connected component of each stratum of the moduli space of quadratic differentials. It is therefore interesting to have a classification of the ergodic components. Veech has proved that these strata are not necessarily connected. In a recent work, Kontsevich and Zorich have completely classified the components in the particular case where the quadratic differentials are given by the global square of Abelian differentials. Here we are interested in the comp…
Let $S = S_g$ be a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$ and $Mod(S)$ be the mapping class group of $S$. In this paper, we show that the boundary representation of $Mod(S)$ is ergodic using statistical hyperbolicity, which generalizes the classical result of Masur on ergodicity of the action of $Mod(S)$ on the projective measured foliation space $\mathcal{PMF}(S).$ As a corollary, we show that the boundary representation of $Mod(S)$ is irreducible.
This short expository note gives an elementary introduction to the study of dynamics on certain moduli spaces, and in particular the recent breakthrough result of Eskin, Mirzakhani, and Mohammadi. We also discuss the context and applications of this result, and connections to other areas of mathematics such as algebraic geometry, Teichmuller theory, and ergodic theory on homogeneous spaces.
Let $S=S_{g,p}$ be a compact, orientable surface of genus $g$ with $p$ punctures and such that $d(S):=3g-3+p>0$. The mapping class group $\textup{Mod}_S$ acts properly discontinuously on the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T(S)$ of marked hyperbolic structures on $S$. The resulting quotient $\mathcal M(S)$ is the moduli space of isometry classes of hyperbolic surfaces. We provide a version of precise reduction theory for finite index subgroups of $\textup{Mod}_S$, i.e., a description of exact fundamental domains. As an application we show that the asymptotic cone of the moduli space $\mathcal M(S)…
We use the relation between the volumes of the strata of meromorphic quadratic differentials with at most simple poles on the Riemann sphere and counting functions of the number of (bands of) closed geodesics in associated flat metrics with singularities to prove a very explicit formula for the volume of each such stratum conjectured by M. Kontsevich a decade ago. The proof is based on a formula for the Lyapunov exponents of the geodesic flow on the moduli space, which gives a recursive formula from which the volumes could be recovered. An appendix with an ergodic theorem proved by Jon Chaika …
We derive results on the distribution of directions of saddle connections on translation surfaces using only the Birkhoff ergodic theorem applied to the geodesic flow on the moduli space of translation surfaces. Our techniques, together with an approximation argument, also give an alternative proof of a weak version of a classical theorem in multi-dimensional Diophantine approximation due to W. Schmidt \cite{SchmidtMetrical, SchmidtMetrical2}. The approximation argument allows us to deduce the Birkhoff genericity of almost all lattices in a certain submanifold of the space of unimodular lattic…
We prove that the Birkhoff pointwise ergodic theorem and the Oseledets multiplicative ergodic theorem hold for every flat surface in almost every direction. The proofs rely on the strong law of large numbers, and on recent rigidity results for the action of the upper triangular subgroup of SL(2,R) on the moduli space of flat surfaces. Most of the results also use a theorem about continuity of splittings of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle recently proved by S. Filip.
The orientable cover of the moduli space of real genus zero algebraic curves with marked points is a compact aspherical manifold tiled by associahedra, which resolves the singularities of the space of phylogenetic trees. The resolution maps planar metric trees to their underlying abstract representatives, collapsing and folding an explicit geometric decomposition of the moduli space into cubes. This decomposition endows the resolving space with an interesting canonical pseudometric. The second part of this paper defines a related (stacky) resolution of a space of real quadratic forms, and sugg…
A celebrated result of Mirzakhani states that, if $(S,m)$ is a finite area \emph{orientable} hyperbolic surface, then the number of simple closed geodesics of length less than $L$ on $(S,m)$ is asymptotically equivalent to a positive constant times $L^{\dim\mathcal{ML}(S)}$, where $\mathcal{ML}(S)$ denotes the space of measured laminations on $S$. We observed on some explicit examples that this result does not hold for \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surfaces. The aim of this article is to explain this surprising phenomenon. Let $(S,m)$ be a finite area \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surface.…
Let $M$ be a smooth closed orientable surface, and let $F$ be the space of Morse functions on $M$ such that at least $χ(M)+1$ critical points of each function of $F$ are labeled by different labels (enumerated). Endow the space $F$ with $C^\infty$-topology. We prove the homotopy equivalence $F\sim R\times{\widetilde{\cal M}}$ where $R$ is one of the manifolds ${\mathbb R}P^3$, $S^1\times S^1$ and the point in dependence on the sign of $χ(M)$, and ${\widetilde{\cal M}}$ is the universal moduli space of framed Morse functions, which is a smooth stratified manifold. Morse inequalities for the Bet…
In this paper we consider type-preserving representations of the fundamental group of the three--holed projective plane into $\mathrm{PGL}(2, \R) =\mathrm{Isom}(\HH^2)$ and study the connected components with non-maximal euler class. We show that in euler class zero for all such representations there is a one simple closed curve which is non-hyperbolic, while in euler class $\pm 1$ we show that there are $6$ components where all the simple closed curves are sent to hyperbolic elements and $2$ components where there are simple closed curves sent to non-hyperbolic elements. This answer a questio…
Let $M$ be a smooth closed orientable surface. Let $F$ be the space of Morse functions on $M$, and $\mathbb{F}^1$ the space of framed Morse functions, both endowed with $C^\infty$-topology. The space $\mathbb{F}^0$ of special framed Morse functions is defined. We prove that the inclusion mapping $\mathbb{F}^0\hookrightarrow\mathbb{F}^1$ is a homotopy equivalence. In the case when at least $χ(M)+1$ critical points of each function of $F$ are labeled, homotopy equivalences $\mathbb{\widetilde K}\sim\widetilde{\cal M}$ and $F\sim\mathbb{F}^0\sim{\mathscr D}^0\times\mathbb{\widetilde K}$ are prove…
Let $S_{g,n}$ be a surface of genus $g $ with $n$ marked points. Let $X$ be a complete hyperbolic metric on $S_{g,n}$ with $n$ cusps. Every isotopy class $[γ]$ of a closed curve $γ\in π_{1}(S_{g,n})$ contains a unique closed geodesic on $X$. Let $\ell_γ(X)$ denote the hyperbolic length of the geodesic representative of $γ$ on $X$. In this paper, we study the asymptotic growth of the lengths of closed curves of a fixed topological type on $S_{g,n}.$ As an application, one can obtain the asymptotics of the growth of $s^{k}_{X}(L)$, the number of closed curves of length $\leq L$ on $X$ with at mo…
Proper proximality of a countable group is a notion that was introduced by Boutonnet, Ioana and Peterson as a tool to study rigidity properties of certain von Neumann algebras associated to groups or ergodic group actions. In the present paper, we establish the proper proximality of many groups acting on nonpositively curved spaces. First, these include many countable groups $G$ acting properly nonelementarily by isometries on a proper $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ space $X$. More precisely, proper proximality holds in the presence of rank one isometries or when $X$ is a locally thick affine building with…
A Klein surface is a surface with a dianalytic structure. A double of a Klein surface $X$ is a Klein surface $Y$ such that there is a degree two morphism (of Klein surfaces) $Y\rightarrow X$. There are many doubles of a given Klein surface and among them the so-called natural doubles which are: the complex double, the Schottky double and the orienting double. We prove that if $X$ is a non-orientable Klein surface with non-empty boundary, the three natural doubles, although distinct Klein surfaces, share a common double: "the double of doubles" denoted by $DX$. We describe how to use the double…
Let $S_{g}$ denote the closed orientable surface of genus $g$. We construct exponentially many mapping class group orbits of pairs of simple closed curves which fill $S_{g}$ and intersect minimally, by showing that such orbits are in correspondence with the solutions of a certain permutation equation in the symmetric group. Next, we demonstrate that minimally intersecting filling pairs are combinatorially optimal, in the sense that there are many simple closed curves intersecting the pair exactly once. We conclude by initiating the study of a topological Morse function $\mathcal{F}_{g}$ over t…
We study a novel type of braid groups on a closed orientable surface $Σ$. These are fundamental groups of certain manifolds that are hybrids between symmetric products and configuration spaces of points on $Σ$; a class of examples arises naturally in gauge theory, as moduli spaces of vortices in toric fibre bundles over $Σ$. The elements of these braid groups, which we call divisor braids, have coloured strands that are allowed to intersect according to rules specified by a graph $Γ$. In situations where there is more than one strand of each colour, we show that the corresponding braid group a…
