We establish the local well-posedness for a new nonlinearly dispersive wave equation and we show that the equation has solutions that exist for indefinite times as well as solutions which blowup in finite times. Furthermore, we derive an explosion criterion for the equation and we give a sharp estimate from below for the existence time of solutions with smooth initial data.
In this paper, we study the decay rate in time to solutions of the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case that the flux function which is convex and also the viscosity is a nonlinearly degenerate one (p-Laplacian type viscosity). As the corresponding Riemann problem admits a Riemann solution as the constant state or the single rarefaction wave, it has already been proved by Matsumura-Nishihara that the solution to the Cauchy problem tends toward the constant state or the single rarefaction wav…
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar non-viscous diffusive dispersive conservation laws where the far field states are prescribed. We proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the constant state as time goes to infinity.
In this note, we review some of the recent developments in the well-posedness theory of nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations with random initial data.
We study a class of higher-order KdV equations. We show that the associated initial value problem is well posed in weighted Besov and Sobolev spaces for small initial data. We also prove ill-posedness results when in H^s(\R), for any real s.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the fractional Camassa-Holm equation which models the propagation of small-but-finite amplitude long unidirectional waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. Using Kato's semigroup approach for quasilinear evolution equations, we prove that the Cauchy problem is locally well-posed for data in $H^{s}({\Bbb R})$, $s>{\frac{5}{2}}$.
We consider the stability and instability of periodic travling waves for Korteweg-de Vries type equations with fractional dispersion and other nonlinear dispersive equations. We establish that a constrained minimizer for the related variational problem is nonlinearly stable to period preserving perturbations. We also discuss when the associated linearized equation admits exponentially growing solutions. The proof utilizes the variational structure of the equation.
In this paper we propose a new approach to prove the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem associated with strongly non resonant dispersive equations. As an example we obtain unconditional well-posedness of the Cauchy problem below $ H^1 $ for a large class of one-dimensional dispersive equations with a dispersion that is greater or equal to the one of the Benjamin-Ono equation. Since this is done without using a gauge transform, this enables us to prove strong convergence results for solutions of viscous versions of these equations towards the purely dispersive solutions.
We extend the monumental result of Christodoulou-Klainerman on the global nonlinear stability of the Minkowski spacetime to the global nonlinear stability of a class of large dispersive spacetimes. More precisely, we show that any regular future causally geodesically complete, asymptotically flat solution to the Einstein-scalar field system which approaches the Minkowski spacetime sufficiently fast for large times is future globally nonlinearly stable. Combining our main theorem with results of Luk-Oh, Luk-Oh-Yang and Kilgore, we prove that a class of large data spherically symmetric dispersiv…
We consider the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional dispersive equations with a general nonlinearity in the periodic setting. Our main hypotheses are both that the dispersive operator behaves for high frequencies as a Fourier multiplier by $ i |ξ|^αξ$, with $ 1\le α\le 2 $, and that the nonlinear term is of the form $ \partial_x f(u) $ where $ f $ is the sum of an entire series with infinite radius of convergence. Under these conditions, we prove the unconditional local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in $H^{s}(\mathbb{T})$ for $ s\ge 1-\fracα{2(α+1)}$. This leads to some global existence …
We study the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional dispersive system of Boussinesq type which models weakly nonlinear long wave surface waves. We establish the local well-posedness and ill-posedness of solutions to the system. We also provide criteria for the formation of singularities.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation $i D_t^αu + (-Δ)^{\fracβ{2}} u =0$ with $0<α<1$, $β>0$. We establish the dispersive estimates for the solutions. In particular, we prove that the decay rates are sharp.
Given a solution of a semilinear dispersive partial differential equation with a real analytic nonlinearity, we relate its Cauchy data at two different times by nonlinear representation formulas in terms of convergent series. These series are constructed by means of generating functions. All this theory is based on a new suitable formulation of the dynamics of solutions of dispersive equations.
In this paper, we consider the fractional Camassa-Holm equation modelling the propagation of small-but-finite amplitude long unidirectional waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. First, we establish the local well-posedness in Besov space $B^{s_0}_{2,1}$ with $s_0=2ν-\frac 1 2$ for $ν>\frac 3 2 $ and $s_0=\frac 5 2$ for $1<ν\leq \frac 3 2 $. Then, with a given analytic initial data, we establish the analyticity of the solutions in both variables, globally in space and locally in time.
The aim of this paper is to show how a weakly dispersive perturbation of the inviscid Burgers equation improve (enlarge) the space of resolution of the local Cauchy problem. More generally we will review several problems arising from weak dispersive perturbations of nonlinear hyperbolic equations or systems.
We consider radial solutions to the Cauchy problem for the linear wave equation with a small short-range electromagnetic potential (the "square version" of the massless Dirac equation with a potential) and zero initial data. We prove two a priori estimates that imply, in particular, a dispersive estimate.
This study deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general class of nonlocal nonlinear equations modeling the bi-directional propagation of dispersive waves in various contexts. The nonlocal nature of the problem is reflected by two different elliptic pseudodifferential operators acting on linear and nonlinear functions of the dependent variable, respectively. The well-known doubly dispersive nonlinear wave equation that incorporates two types of dispersive effects originated from two different dispersion operators falls into the category studied here. The class of nonlocal nonlinea…
A family of dispersive equations is considered which links a higher dimensional Benjamin-Ono equation and the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. For these fractional Zakharov-Kuznetsov equations new well-posedness results are proved using transversality and localization of time to small frequency dependent time intervals.
We consider in this paper the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to two-dimensional dispersive systems of Boussinesq type which model weakly nonlinear long wave surface waves. We emphasize the case of the {\it strongly dispersive} ones with focus on the "KdV-KdV" system which possesses the strongest dispersive properties and which is a vector two-dimensional extension of the classical KdV equation.
This paper is concerned with the one-dimensional version of a specific member of the (abcd) family of Boussinesq systems having the higher possible dispersion. We will establish two different long time existence results for the solutions of the Cauchy problem. The proofs involve normal form transformations suitably modified away from the zero set of the phases.
The Cauchy problem for a scalar conservation laws admits a unique entropy solution when the data $u_0$ is a bounded measurable function (Kruzhkov). The semi-group $(S_t)_{t\ge0}$ is contracting in the $L^1$-distance. For the multi-dimensional Burgers equation, we show that $(S_t)_{t\ge0}$ extends uniquely as a continuous semi-group over $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ whenever $1\le p<\infty$, and $u(t):=S_tu_0$ is actually an entropy solution to the Cauchy problem. When $p\le q\le \infty$ and $t>0$, $S_t$ actually maps $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ into $L^q(\mathbb{R}^n)$. These results are based upon new dispers…
We regard the Cauchy problem for a particular Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. We are interested in well-posedness at a very low level of regularity. We derive dispersive and Strichartz estimates, and implement them together with a fixed point argument to solve the problem locally. Hamiltonian conservation guarantees global well-posedness for small initial data in the one dimensional settings.
These notes are devoted to the notion of well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for nonlinear dispersive equations. We present recent methods for proving ill-posedness type results for dispersive PDE's. The common feature in the analysis is that the proof of such results requires the construction of high frequency approximate solutions on small time intervals (possibly depending on the frequency).
We investigate the Cauchy problem for linear, constant-coefficient evolution PDEs on the real line with discontinuous initial conditions (ICs) in the small-time limit. The small-time behavior of the solution near discontinuities is expressed in terms of universal, computable special functions. We show that the leading-order behavior of the solution of dispersive PDEs near a discontinuity of the ICs is characterized by Gibbs-type oscillations and gives exactly the Wilbraham-Gibbs constant.
This paper is a continuation of a previous work by two of the Authors on long time existence for Boussinesq systems modeling the propagation of long, weakly nonlinear water waves. We provide proofs on examples not considered previously in particular we prove a long time well-posedness result for a delicate "strongly dispersive" Boussinesq system.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions toward a multiwave pattern of the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the flux function is convex or concave but linearly degenerate on some interval, and also the viscosity is a nonlinearly degenerate one (p-Laplacian type viscosity). When the corresponding Riemann problem admits a Riemann solution which consists of rarefaction waves and contact discontinuity, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward th…
We show that the Cauchy problem for a class of dispersive perturbations of Burgers' equations containing the low dispersion Benjamin-Ono equation $\partial$\_t u -- D^$α$\_x $\partial$\_x u = $\partial$\_x(u^2), 0 < $α$ $\le$ 1, is locally well-posed in H^s (R) when s > 3 /2 -- 5$α$ /4. As a consequence, we obtain global well-posedness in the energy space H^{$α$/2} (R) as soon as $α$ > 6/7 .
This article represents a first step towards understanding the well-posedness for the dispersive Hunter-Saxton equation. This problem arises in the study of nematic liquid crystals, and although the equation has formal similarities with the KdV equation, the lack of $L^2$ control gives it a quasilinear character, with only continuous dependence on initial data. Here, we prove the local and global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem using a normal form approach to construct modified energies, and frequency envelopes in order to prove the continuous dependence with respect to the initial data.
By using tools of time-frequency analysis, we obtain some improved local well-posedness results for the NLS, NLW and NLKG equations with Cauchy data in modulation spaces $M{p, 1}_{0,s}$.
In this paper, we study the precise decay rate in time to solutions of the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional conservation law with a nonlinearly degenerate viscosity where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the flux function is convex or concave but linearly degenerate on some interval. As the corresponding Riemann problem admits a Riemann solution as a multiwave pattern which consists of the rarefaction waves and the contact discontinuity, it has already been proved by Yoshida that the solution to the Cauchy problem tends toward the linear combina…
We consider the Cauchy problem of fifth order dispersive equations on the torus. We assume that the initial data is sufficiently smooth and the nonlinear term is a polynomial depending on $\partial_x^3 u, \partial_x^2 u, \partial_x u$ and $u$. We prove that the local well-posedness holds on $[-T,T]$ when the nonlinear term satisfies a condition and otherwise, the local well-posedness holds with a smoothing effect only on either $[0,T]$ or $[-T,0]$ and nonexistence result holds on the other time interval, which means that the nonlinear term can not be treated as a perturbation of the linear par…
This paper is devoted to studying the Cauchy problem for the generalized Ostrovsky equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}-β\partial_{x}^{3}u-γ\partial_{x}^{-1}u+\frac{1}{k+1}(u^{k+1})_{x}=0,k\geq5 \end{eqnarray*} with $βγ<0,γ>0$. Firstly, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the generalized Ostrovsky equation is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbb{R})\left(s>\frac{1}{2}-\frac{2}{k}\right)$. Then, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the generalized Ostrovsky equation is locally well-posed in $X_{s}(\mathbb{R}): =\|f\|_{H^{s}}+\left\|\mathscr{F}_{x}^{-1}\left(\frac{\mathscr{F}_{x} f(ξ)}ξ\right)\righ…
This paper is aimed to establish well-posedness in several settings for the Cauchy problem associated to a model arising in the study of capillary-gravity flows. More precisely, we determinate local well-posedness conclusions in classical Sobolev spaces and some spaces adapted to the energy of the equation. A key ingredient is a commutator estimate involving the Hilbert transform and fractional derivatives. We also study local well-posedness for the associated periodic initial value problem. Additionally, by determining well-posedness in anisotropic weighted Sobolev spaces as well as some uniq…
This paper has various goals: first, we develop a local and global well-posedness theory for the regularized Benjamin-Ono equation in the periodic setting, second, we show that the Cauchy problem for this equation (in both periodic and non-periodic case) cannot be solved by an iteration scheme based on the Duhamel formula for negative Sobolev indices, third, a proof of the existence of a smooth curve of periodic travelling wave solutions, for the regularized Benjamin-Ono equation, with fixed minimal period 2L, is given. It is also shown that these solutions are nonlinearly stable in the energy…
In this work, we consider the long-time asymptotics for the Cauchy problem of a fourth-order dispersive nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions at infinity. Firstly, in order to construct the basic Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with nonzero boundary conditions, we analysis direct scattering problem. Then we deform the corresponding matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem to explicitly solving models via using the nonlinear steepest descent method and employing the $g$-function mechanism to eliminate the exponential growths of the jump matrices. Finally, we obtain the asympt…
Constantin and Saut showed in 1988 that solutions of the Cauchy problem for general dispersive equations $$ w_t +iP(D)w=0,\quad w(x,0)=q (x), \quad x\in \mathbb{R}^n, \ t\in \mathbb{R} , $$ enjoy the local smoothing property $$ q\in H^s (\R ^n) \implies w\in L^2 \Big (-T,T; H^{s+\frac{m-1}{2}}_{loc} \left (\R^n\right )\Big ) , $$ where $m$ is the order of the pseudo-differential operator $P(D)$. This property, now called local Kato smoothing, was first discovered by Kato for the KdV equation and implicitly shown later by Sjölin for the linear Schrödinger equation. In this paper, we show that t…
This paper is devoted to the proof of a well-posedness result for the gravity water waves equations, in arbitrary dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms, when the initial velocity field is not necessarily Lipschitz. Moreover, for two-dimensional waves, we can consider solutions such that the curvature of the initial free surface does not belong to $L^2$. The proof is entirely based on the Eulerian formulation of the water waves equations, using microlocal analysis to obtain sharp Sobolev and Hölder estimates. We first prove tame estimates in Sobolev spaces depending linearly on Hö…
We prove a full asymptotic stability result for solitary wave solutions of the mKdV equation. We consider small perturbations of solitary waves with polynomial decay at infinity and prove that solutions of the Cauchy problem evolving from such data tend uniformly, on the real line, to another solitary wave as time goes to infinity. We describe precisely the asymptotics of the perturbation behind the solitary wave showing that it satisfies a nonlinearly modified scattering behavior. This latter part of our result relies on a precise study of the asymptotic behavior of small solutions of the mKd…
We establish global well-posedness and scattering for wave maps from $d$-dimensional hyperbolic space into Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry for initial data that is small in the critical Sobolev space for $d \geq 4$. The main theorem is proved using the moving frame approach introduced by Shatah and Struwe. However, rather than imposing the Coulomb gauge we formulate the wave maps problem in Tao's caloric gauge, which is constructed using the harmonic map heat flow. In this setting the caloric gauge has the remarkable property that the main `gauged' dynamic equations reduce to a system…
The Euler-Poisson system is a fundamental two-fluid model to describe the dynamics of the plasma consisting of compressible electrons and a uniform ion background. In the 3D case Guo first constructed a global smooth irrotational solution by using dispersive Klein-Gordon effect. It has been conjectured that same results should hold in the two-dimensional case. In our recent work, we proved the existence of a family of smooth solutions by constructing the wave operators for the 2D system. In this work we completely settle the 2D Cauchy problem.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the kinetic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the torus: \[ \partial_t u - i \partial_x^2 u = α\partial_x \big( |u|^2 u \big) + β\partial_x \big[ H \big( |u|^2 \big) u \big] , \quad (t, x) \in [0,T] \times \mathbf{T}, \] where the constants $α,β$ are such that $α\in \mathbf{R}$ and $β<0$, and $H$ denotes the Hilbert transform. This equation has dissipative nature, and the energy method is applicable to prove local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces $H^s$ for $s>3/2$. However, the gauge transform technique, which is useful for de…
When a solution to the Cauchy problem for nonlinear dispersive equations is obtained by a fixed point argument using auxiliary function spaces, it is non-trivial to ensure uniqueness of solutions in a natural space such as the class of continuous curves in the data space. This property is called unconditional uniqueness, and proving it often requires some additional work. In the last decade, unconditional uniqueness has been shown for some canonical nonlinear dispersive equations by an integration-by-parts technique, which can be regarded as a variant of the (Poincaré-Dulac) normal form reduct…
We consider a general class of convolution-type nonlocal wave equations modeling bidirectional nonlinear wave propagation. The model involves two small positive parameters measuring the relative strengths of the nonlinear and dispersive effects. We take two different kernel functions that have similar dispersive characteristics in the long-wave limit and compare the corresponding solutions of the Cauchy problems with the same initial data. We prove rigorously that the difference between the two solutions remains small over a long time interval in a suitable Sobolev norm. In particular our resu…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the two-dimensional Novikov-Veselov equation integrable via the inverse scattering problem for the Schrödinger operator with fixed negative energy. The associated linear equation is characterized by a rational symbol which is not a polynomial, except when the energy parameter is zero. With the help of a complex analysis point of view of the problem, we establish uniform decay estimates for the linear solution with gain of almost one derivative, and we use this result together with Fourier decomposition methods and $X^{s,b}$ spaces to prove local well-posednes…
