In this paper, we study the precise decay rate in time to solutions of the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional conservation law with a nonlinearly degenerate viscosity where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the flux function is convex or concave but linearly degenerate on some interval. As the corresponding Riemann problem admits a Riemann solution as a multiwave pattern which consists of the rarefaction waves and the contact discontinuity, it has already been proved by Yoshida that the solution to the Cauchy problem tends toward the linear combination of the rarefaction waves and contact wave for p-Laplacian type viscosity as the time goes to infinity. We investigate that the decay rate in time of the corresponding solutions toward the multiwave pattern. Furthermore, we also investigate that the decay rate in time of the solution for the higher order derivative. The proof is given by L1, L2-energy and time-weighted Lq-energy methods under the use of the precise asymptotic properties of the interactions between the nonlinear waves.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions toward a multiwave pattern of the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the flux function is convex or concave but linearly degenerate on some interval, and also the viscosity is a nonlinearly degenerate one (p-Laplacian type viscosity). When the corresponding Riemann problem admits a Riemann solution which consists of rarefaction waves and contact discontinuity, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward th…
We study the representation formulae for the fundamental solutions and viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations of contact type. We also obtain a vanishing contact structure result for relevant Cauchy problems which can be regarded as an extension to the vanishing discount problem.
In this paper, we study the decay rate in time to solutions of the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case that the flux function which is convex and also the viscosity is a nonlinearly degenerate one (p-Laplacian type viscosity). As the corresponding Riemann problem admits a Riemann solution as the constant state or the single rarefaction wave, it has already been proved by Matsumura-Nishihara that the solution to the Cauchy problem tends toward the constant state or the single rarefaction wav…
We consider the global existence and large-time asymptotic behavior of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and vacuum. We establish some key a priori exponential decay-in-time rates of the strong solutions. Then after using these estimates, we also obtain the global existence of strong solutions in the whole three-dimensional space, provided that the initial velocity is suitably small in the $\dot H^β$-norm for some $β\in(1/2,1].$ Note that this result is proved without any smalln…
Global Existence and Incompressible Limit of the Cauchy Problem for 2D Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Bulk Viscosity and Large Initial Data
Global Well-posedness of Strong Solutions to the Cauchy Problem of 2D Nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes Equations with Density-Dependent Viscosity and Vacuum
We study global well-posedness of strong solutions for the nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and initial density allowing vanish in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Applying a logarithmic interpolation inequality and delicate energy estimates, we show the global existence of a unique strong solution provided that $\|\nablaμ(ρ_0)\|_{L^q}$ is suitably small, which improves the previous result of Huang and Wang [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 46, 1771--1788 (2014)] to the whole space case. Moreover, we also derive exponential decay rates of the solution. In particular, there is no need …
Initial-boundary value problems for second order fully nonlinear PDEs with Caputo time fractional derivatives of order less than one are considered in the framework of viscosity solution theory. Associated boundary conditions are Dirichlet and Neumann, and they are considered in the strong sense and the viscosity sense, respectively. By a comparison principle and Perron's method, unique existence for the Cauchy-Dirichlet and Cauchy-Neumann problems are proved.
We consider the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional (1D) barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and large external force. Under a general assumption on the density-dependent viscosity, we prove that the Cauchy problem admits a unique global strong (classical) solution for the large initial data with vacuum. Moreover, the density is proved to be bounded from above time-independently. As a consequence, we obtain the large time behavior of the solution without external forces.
It is well-known that due to the lack of a technique to obtain the a-priori $L^{\infty}$ estimate of the artificial viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional Euler-Poisson (or hydrodynamic) model for semiconductors, where the energy equation is replaced by a pressure-density relation, over the past three decades, all solutions of this model were obtained by using the Lax-Friedrichs, Godounov schemes and Glimm scheme for both the initial-boundary value problem \cite{Zh1,Li} and the Cauchy problem \cite{MN1,PRV,HLY}; or by using the vanishing artificial viscosity method f…
There are two kinds of solutions of the Cauchy problem of first order, the viscosity solution and the more geometric minimax solution and in general they are different. The aim of this article is to show how they are related: iterating the minimax procedure during shorter and shorter time intervals one approaches the viscosity solution. This can be considered as an extension to the contact framework of the result of Q.Wei in the symplectic case.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the viscosity is of non-Newtonian type, including a pseudo-plastic case. When the corresponding Riemann problem for the hyperbolic part admits a Riemann solution which consists of single rarefaction wave, under a condition on nonlinearity of the viscosity, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the rarefaction wave as time goes to infinity, without any smallne…
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for an inviscid compressible Oldroyd-B model in three dimensions. The global well posedness of strong solutions and the associated time-decay estimates in Sobolev spaces are established near an equilibrium state. The vanishing of viscosity is the main challenge compared with our previous work [47] where the viscosity coefficients are included and the decay rates for the highest-order derivatives of the solutions seem not optimal. One of the main objectives of this paper is to develop some new dissipative estimates such that the smallness of the ini…
We consider the Cauchy problem for a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic equa- tion with forcing. By using the vanishing viscosity method we obtain generalized solutions. We prove some regularity results about this generalized solutions.
In this article, we consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equation with density dependent viscosity coefficients and a term of capillarity introduced by Coquel et al in \cite{5CR}. This model includes at the same time the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity coefficients, shallow-water system and the model of Rohde. We first study the well-posedness of the model in critical regularity spaces with respect to the scaling of the associated equations. In a functional setting as close as possibleto the physical energy spaces, we prove global existence of solutions close to a…
We prove regularity results such as interior Lipschitz regularity and boundary continuity for the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem associated to a class of parabolic equations inspired by the evolutionary $p$-Laplacian, but extending it at a wide scale. We employ a regularization technique of viscosity-type that we find interesting in itself.
We study a nonlinear porous medium type equation involving the infinity Laplacian operator. We first consider the problem posed on a bounded domain and prove existence of maximal nonnegative viscosity solutions. Uniqueness is obtained for strictly positive solutions with Lipschitz in time data. We also describe the asymptotic behaviour for the Dirichlet problem in the class of maximal solutions. We then discuss the Cauchy problem posed in the whole space. As in the standard porous medium equation (PME), solutions which start with compact support exhibit a free boundary propagating with finite …
In this paper, we investigate large amplitude solutions to a system of conservation laws which is transformed, by a change of variable, from the well-known Keller-Segel model describing cell (bacteria) movement toward the concentration gradient of the chemical that is consumed by the cells. For the Cauchy problem and initial-boundary value problem, the global unique solvability is proved based on the energy method. In particular, our main purpose is to investigate the convergence rates as the diffusion parameter $ε$ goes to zero. It is shown that the convergence rates in $L^\infty$-norm are of…
In this paper, we prove that the 1D Cauchy problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations admits a unique global classical solution $(ρ,\rm u)$ if the viscosity $μ(ρ)=1+ρ^β$ with $β\geq0$. The initial data can be arbitrarily large and may contain vacuum. Some new weighted estimates of the density and velocity are obtained when deriving higher order estimates of the solution.
In this paper, we consider the (upper) semigroup envelope, i.e. the least upper bound, of a given family of linear Feller semigroups. We explicitly construct the semigroup envelope and show that, under suitable assumptions, it yields viscosity solutions to abstract Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-type partial differential equations related to stochastic optimal control problems arising in the field of Robust Finance. We further derive conditions for the existence of a Markov process under a nonlinear expectation related to the semigroup envelope for the case where the state space is locally compact. T…
We consider the Cauchy problem for a stochastic scalar parabolic-hyperbolic equation in any space dimension with nonlocal, nonlinear, and possibly degenerate diffusion terms. The equations are nonlocal because they involve fractional diffusion operators. We adapt the notion of stochastic entropy solution and provide a new technical framework to prove the uniqueness. The existence proof relies on the vanishing viscosity method. Moreover, using bounded variation (BV) estimates for vanishing viscosity approximations, we derive an explicit continuous dependence estimate on the nonlinearities and d…
In this paper, we investigate the global structure of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the viscous/diffusive flux $σ(v) \sim |\, v \,|^p$ is of non-Newtonian type (i.e., $p>0$), including a pseudo-plastic case (i.e., $p<0$). When the corresponding Riemann problem for the hyperbolic part admits a Riemann solution which consists of single rarefaction wave, under a condition on nonlinearity of the viscosity, it has been recently proved by Matsumura-Yoshida \cite{matsumura-yoshi…
We study the Cauchy problem for the parabolic infinity Laplace equation. We prove a new comparison principle and obtain uniqueness of viscosity solutions in the class of functions with a polinomial growth at infinity, improving previous results obtained assuming a linear growth.
In this article we deal with stochastic perturbation of degenerate parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). The particular emphasise is on analysing the effect of multiplicative Lévy noise to such problems and establishing wellposedness by developing a suitable weak entropy solution framework. The proof of existence is based on the vanishing viscosity technique. The uniqueness is settled by interpreting Kruzkov's doubling technique in the presence noise.
Main purpose of this paper is to study the local propagation of singularities of viscosity solution to contact type evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$ D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0. $$ An important issue of this topic is the existence, uniqueness and regularity of the strict singular characteristic. We apply the recent existence and regularity results on the Herglotz' type variational problem to the aforementioned Hamilton-Jacobi equation with smooth initial data. We obtain some new results on the local structure of the cut set of the viscosity solution near non-conjugate singular …
This paper deals with the periodic homogenization of nonlocal parabolic Hamilton-Jacobi equations with superlinear growth in the gradient terms. We show that the problem presents different features depending on the order of the nonlocal operator, giving rise to three different limit problems. To prove the locally uniform convergence to the unique solution of the Cauchy problem for the effective equation we need a new comparison principle among viscosity semi-solutions of integro-differential equations that can be of independent interest.
For periodic initial data with initial density, we establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong and classical solutions for the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with no restrictions on the size of initial data provided the shear viscosity is a positive constant and the bulk one is $\lam=ρ^{\b}$ with $\b>1.$
For smooth initial data, we establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong and classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in two spatial dimensions with vacuum state as far field and with no restrictions on the size of initial data provided the shear viscosity is a positive constant and the bulk one is $λ= ρ^β$ with $β>4/3$.
In this paper, we show the existence and uniqueness of viscosity solution to the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for a class of fully nonlinear parabolic equations. This extends recent results of Eyssidieux-Guedj-Zeriahi.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of heat-conductive ideal gas without viscosity. We show that, for the non-viscous case, if the strengths of the wave patterns and the initial perturbation are suitably small, the unique global-in-time solution exists and asymptotically tends toward the corresponding the viscous contact wave or the composition of a viscous contact wave with rarefaction waves determined by the initial condition, which extended the results by Huang-Li-Matsumura[13], where they treated the viscous and heat-conductive ideal gas.
This paper studies the Cauchy problem of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic systems with or without viscosity $ν$. Under the assumption that the initial velocity field and the displacement of the initial magnetic field from a non-zero constant are sufficiently small in certain weighted Sobolev spaces, the Cauchy problem is shown to be globally well-posed for all $ν\geq 0$ and all space dimension $n \geq 2$. Such a result holds true uniformly in nonnegative viscosity parameter. The proof is based on the inherent strong null structure of the systems which was first introduced for incompressi…
In this article, we explore some of the main mathematical problems connected to multidimensional fractional conservation laws driven by Lévy processes. Making use of an adapted entropy formulation, a result of existence and uniqueness of a solution is established. Moreover, using bounded variation (BV) estimates for vanishing viscosity approximations, we derive an explicit continuous dependence estimate on the nonlinearities of the entropy solutions under the assumption that Lévy noise depends only on the solution. This result is used to show the error estimate for the stochastic vanishing vis…
We construct an explicit representation of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation $(H,σ)$ on a given domain $Ω= (0,T)\times \R^n.$ It is known that, if the Hamiltonian $H = H(t,p)$ is not a convex (or concave) function in $p$, or $H(\cdot, p)$ may change its sign on $(0,T)$, then the Hopf-type formula does not define a viscosity solution on $Ω.$ Under some assumptions for $H(t,p)$ on the subdomains $(t_i, t_{i+1})\times \R^n\subset Ω$, we are able to arrange "partial solutions" given by the Hopf-type formula to get a viscosity solution on $Ω.$ Then we study …
In this paper, we study the viscous Boussinesq equation in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, which describes the propagation of small amplitude and long waves on the surface of water with viscous effects. Concerning the linearized Cauchy problem, some qualitative properties of solutions including $L^m-L^q$ estimates with $1\leqslant m\leqslant q\leqslant \infty$, inviscid limits and asymptotic profiles of solution with respect to the small viscosity are investigated by means of the Fourier analysis and the WKB method. For another, by applying some fractional order interpolations in the harmonic …
In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability of rarefaction waves for the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity. First, a weak solution around a rarefaction wave to the Cauchy problem is constructed by approximating the system and regularizing the initial values which may contain vacuum state. Then some global in time estimates on the weak solution are obtained. Based on these uniform estimates, the vacuum states are shown to vanish in finite time and the weak solution we constructed becomes a unique strong one. Consequently, the stability of the …
We are concerned with the large time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional compressible micropolar fluid model without viscosity, where the far-field states of the initial data are prescribed to be different. If the corresponding Riemann problem of the compressible Euler system admits a contact discontinuity and two rarefaction waves solutions, we show that for such a non-viscous model, the combination of the viscous contact wave with two rarefaction waves is time-asymptotically stable provided that the strength of the composite wave and the initial perturbation ar…

In this paper, we are concerned with the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity $μ(ρ)=ρ^α(α>0)$ and pressure $P(ρ)=ρ^γ\ (γ>1)$. We will establish the global existence and asymptotic behavior of weak solutions for any $α>0$ and $γ>1$ under the assumption that the density function keeps a constant state at far fields. This enlarges the ranges of $α$ and $γ$ and improves the previous results presented by Jiu and Xin. As a result, in the case that $0<α<\frac12$, we obtain the large time behavior of the strong solution obt…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with critical dissipation, $$ \partial_t u + (-Δ)^{ 1/2} u = |\nabla u|^p, \quad x \in \mathbb R^N, t > 0, \qquad u(x,0) = u_0(x) , \quad x \in \mathbb R^N, $$ where $p > 1$ and $u_0 \in B^1_{r,1}(\mathbb R^N) \cap B^1_{\infty,1} (\mathbb R^N)$ with $r \in [1,\infty]$. We show that for sufficiently small $u_0 \in \dot B^1_{\infty,1}(\mathbb R^N)$, there exists a global-in-time mild solution. Furthermore, we prove that the solution behaves asymptotically like suitable multiplies of the Poisson kernel.
We construct with full rigorous mathematical proof a family of approximate solutions to the Cauchy problem for the standard system of two fluid flows with energy equations and we pass to the limit by weak compactness to obtain Radon measures that satisfy the equations in a natural weak sense. Our method provides a convergent numerical method for the numerical calculation of these Radon measures by reducing the system of partial differential equations in the case of these approximate solutions to a system of ordinary differential equations. We observe numerically on the standard Toumi shock tub…
In this paper, we prove in two dimensions global identifiability of the viscosity in an incompressible fluid by making boundary measurements. The main contribution of this work is to use more natural boundary measurements, the Cauchy forces, than the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map previously considered in \cite{IY} to prove the uniqueness of the viscosity for the Stokes equations and for the Navier-Stokes equations.
We study some differential properties of viscosity solution for Hamilton - Jacobi equations defined by Hopf-Lax formula $u(t,x)=\min_{y\in \R^n} \big\{σ(y)+tH^*\big (\frac {x-y}{t}\big)\big \}.$ A generalized form of characteristics of the Cauchy problems is taken into account the context. Then we examine the strip of differentiability of the viscosity solution given by the function $u(t,x).$
We consider the Cauchy problem for a strictly hyperbolic, $n\times n$ system in one space dimension: $u_t+A(u)u_x=0$, assuming that the initial data has small total variation. We show that the solutions of the viscous approximations $u_t+A(u)u_x=\ve u_{xx}$ are defined globally in time and satisfy uniform BV estimates, independent of $\ve$. Moreover, they depend continuously on the initial data in the $Ł^1$ distance, with a Lipschitz constant independent of $t,\ve$. Letting $\ve\to 0$, these viscous solutions converge to a unique limit, depending Lipschitz continuously on the initial data. In …
In this paper, we study the global well-posedness of classical solution to 2D Cauchy problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with large initial data and vacuum. It is proved that if the shear viscosity $μ$ is a positive constant and the bulk viscosity $λ$ is the power function of the density, that is, $λ(ρ)=ρ^β$ with $β>3$, then the 2D Cauchy problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on the whole space $\mathbf{R}^2$ admit a unique global classical solution $(ρ,u)$ which may contain vacuums in an open set of $\mathbf{R}^2$. Note that the initial data can be arbitrarily la…
Motivated by applications to vortex rings, we study the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations without swirl, using scale invariant function spaces. If the axisymmetric vorticity is integrable with respect to the two-dimensional measure dr dz, where (r,θ,z) denote the cylindrical coordinates in R^3, we show the existence of a unique global solution, which converges to zero in L^1 norm as time goes to infinity. The proof of local well-posedness follows exactly the same lines as in the two-dimensional case, and our approach emphasizes the similarity between…
Here, we study the large-time limit of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for second-order Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equations with convex Hamiltonians in the torus. This large-time limit solves the corresponding stationary problem, sometimes called the ergodic problem. This problem, however, has multiple viscosity solutions and, thus, a key question is which of these solutions is selected by the limit. Here, we provide a representation for the viscosity solution to the Cauchy problem in terms of generalized holonomic measures. Then, we use this representation to characterize the large-…
In order to describe behavior of various liquid-like materials at high pressures, incompressible fluid models with pressure dependent viscosity seem to be a suitable choice. In the context of implicit constitutive relations involving the Cauchy stress and the velocity gradient these models are consistent with standard procedures of continuum mechanics. Understanding mathematical properties of governing equations is connected with various types of idealization, some of them lead to studies in unbounded domains. In this paper, we first bring up several characteristic features concerning fluids w…
In this paper, we mainly study the Cauchy problem of the Euler-Nernst-Planck-Possion ($ENPP$) system. We first establish local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the $ENPP$ system in Besov spaces. Then we present a blow-up criterion of solutions to the $ENPP$ system. Moreover, we prove that the solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Nernst-Planck-Possion system converge to the solutions of the $ENPP$ system as the viscosity $ν$ goes to zero, and that the convergence rate is at least of order $ν^\frac{1}{2}$.
The large time behavior of solutions to Cauchy problem for viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation is classified. The large time asymptotics are given by very singular self-similar solutions on one hand and by self-similar viscosity solutions on the other hand
In this paper, we study the large time behavior of solutions of a class of parabolic fully nonlinear integro-differential equations in a periodic setting. In order to do so, we first solve the ergodic problem}(or cell problem), i.e. we construct solutions of the form $λt + v(x)$. We then prove that solutions of the Cauchy problem look like those specific solutions as time goes to infinity. We face two key difficulties to carry out this classical program: (i) the fact that we handle the case of "mixed operators" for which the required ellipticity comes from a combination of the properties of th…
