In order to describe behavior of various liquid-like materials at high pressures, incompressible fluid models with pressure dependent viscosity seem to be a suitable choice. In the context of implicit constitutive relations involving the Cauchy stress and the velocity gradient these models are consistent with standard procedures of continuum mechanics. Understanding mathematical properties of governing equations is connected with various types of idealization, some of them lead to studies in unbounded domains. In this paper, we first bring up several characteristic features concerning fluids with pressure dependent viscosity. Then we study three-dimensional flows of a class of fluids with the viscosity depending on the pressure and the shear rate. By means of higher differentiability methods we establish large data existence of a weak solution for the Cauchy problem. This seems to be a first result that analyzes flows of considered fluids in unbounded domains. Even in the context of purely shear rate dependent fluids of a power-law type the result presented here improves some of earlier works.
In this note we analyze a model for a unidirectional unsteady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid with time dependent viscosity. A possible way to take into account such behaviour is to introduce a memory formalism, including thus the time dependent viscosity by using an integro-differential term and therefore generalizing the classical equation of a Newtonian viscous fluid. A possible useful choice, in this framework, is to use a rheology based on stress/strain relation generalized by fractional calculus modelling. This is a model that can be used in applied problems, taking into account a…
The global equi-continuity estimate on Lp-viscosity solutions of bilateral obstacle problems with unbounded ingredients is established when obstacles are merely continuous. The existence of Lp-viscosity solutions is established via an approximation of given data. The local Hölder continuity estimate on the first derivative of Lp-viscosity solutions is shown when the obstacles belong to C^{1,β}, and p>n.
The global equi-continuity estimate on $L^p$-viscosity solutions of parabolic bilateral obstacle problems with unbounded ingredients is established when obstacles are merely continuous. The existence of $L^p$-viscosity solutions is established via an approximation of given data. The local Hölder continuity estimate on the space derivative of $L^p$-viscosity solutions is shown when the obstacles belong to $C^{1, β}$, and $p>n+2$.
We are concerned with fully nonlinear possibly degenerate elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) with superlinear terms with respect to $Du$. We prove several comparison principles among viscosity solutions which may be unbounded under some polynomial-type growth conditions. Our main result applies to PDEs with convex superlinear terms but we also obtain some results in nonconvex cases. Applications to monotone systems of PDEs are given.
The weak Harnack inequality for $L^p$-viscosity supersolutions of fully nonlinear second-order uniformly parabolic partial differential equations with unbounded coefficients and inhomogeneous terms is proved. It is shown that Hölder continuity of $L^p$-viscosity solutions is derived from the weak Harnack inequality for $L^p$-viscosity supersolutions. The local maximum principle for $L^p$-viscosity subsolutions and the Harnack inequality for $L^p$-viscosity solutions are also obtained. Several further remarks are presented when equations have superlinear growth in the first space derivatives.
We consider the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional (1D) barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and large external force. Under a general assumption on the density-dependent viscosity, we prove that the Cauchy problem admits a unique global strong (classical) solution for the large initial data with vacuum. Moreover, the density is proved to be bounded from above time-independently. As a consequence, we obtain the large time behavior of the solution without external forces.
We show strong convergence of the vorticities in the vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the two-dimensional torus, assuming only that the initial vorticity of the limiting Euler equations is in $L^p$ for some $p>1$. This substantially extends a recent result of Constantin, Drivas and Elgindi, who proved strong convergence in the case $p=\infty$. Our proof, which relies on the classical renormalization theory of DiPerna-Lions, is surprisingly simple.
We study a hybrid control system in which both discrete and continuous controls are involved. The discrete controls act on the system at a given set interface. The state of the system is changed discontinuously when the trajectory hits predefined sets, namely, an autonomous jump set $A$ or a controlled jump set $C$ where controller can choose to jump or not. At each jump, trajectory can move to a different Euclidean space. We allow the cost functionals to be unbounded with certain growth and hence the corresponding value function can be unbounded. We characterize the value function as the uniq…
In this paper, we study the full regularity and well-posedness of classical solutions to the nonlinear unsteady Prandtl equations with Robin or Dirichlet boundary condition in half space. Under Oleinik's monotonicity assumption, we prove the large time existence of classical solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equations with Robin or Dirichlet boundary condition, when both initial vorticity and the general Euler flow are sufficiently small. For the general Euler flow, the vertical velocity of the Prandtl flow is unbounded. We prove that the Prandtl solutions preserve the full regularities in ou…
Chemin has shown that solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the plane for an incompressible fluid whose initial vorticity is bounded and lies in L^2 converge in the zero-viscosity limit in the L^2-norm to a solution of the Euler equations, convergence being uniform over any finite time interval. Yudovich, assuming an initial vorticity lying in L^p for all p >= q for some q, established the uniqueness of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible fluid in a bounded domain of n-space assuming a particular bound on the growth of the L^p-norm of the initial vorticity as p grows l…
We consider the zero-electron-mass limit for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in unbounded spatial domains. Assuming smallness of the viscosity coefficient and ill-prepared initial data, we show that the asymptotic limit is represented by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a Brinkman damping, in the case when viscosity is proportional to the electron-mass, and by the incompressible Euler system provided the viscosity is dominated by the electron mass. The proof is based on the RAGE theorem and dispersive estimates for acoustic waves, and on the concept of suitable weak solutions for…
Although local existence of multidimensional shock waves has been established in some fundamental references, there are few results on the global existence of those waves except the ones for the unsteady potential flow equations in n-dimensional spaces (n > 4) or in special unbounded space-time domains with non-physical boundary conditions. In this paper, we are concerned with both the local and global multidimensional conic shock wave problem for the unsteady potential flow equations when a pointed piston (i.e., the piston degenerates into a single point at the initial time) or an explosive w…
Motivated by extrusion problems, we consider a non-stationary incompress-ible 3D fluid flow with a non-constant (temperature dependent) viscosity, subjected to mixed boundary conditions with a given time dependent velocity on a part of the boundary and Tresca's friction law on the other part. We construct a sequence of approximate solutions by using a regularization of the free boundary condition due to friction combined with a particular penalty method, reminiscent of the " incompressibility limit " of compressible fluids, allowing to get better insights into the links between the fluid veloc…
We prove the convergence of the vanishing viscosity limit of the one-dimensional, isentropic, compressible Navier-Stokes equations to the isentropic Euler equations in the case of a general pressure law. Our strategy relies on the construction of fundamental solutions to the entropy equation that remain controlled for unbounded densities, and employs an improved reduction framework to show that measure-valued solutions constrained by the Tartar commutation relation (but with possibly unbounded support) reduce to a Dirac mass. As the Navier-Stokes equations do not admit an invariant region, we …
We study unbounded (viscosity) supersolutions of the Evolutionary p-Laplace Equation in the slow diffusion case. The supersolutions fall into two widely different classes, depending on whether they are locally summable to the power p-2 or not. Also the Porous Medium Equation is studied.

Following the previous part of our study on unsteady non-New\-to\-nian fluid flows with boundary conditions of friction type we consider in this paper the case of pseudo-plastic (shear thinning) fluids. The problem is described by a $p$-Laplacian non-stationary Stokes system with $p<2$ and we assume that the fluid is subjected to mixed boundary conditions, namely non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on a part of the boundary and a slip fluid-solid interface law of friction type on another part of the boundary. Hence the fluid velocity should belong to a subspace of $L^p \bigl(0,T; (W^…
We study the linear stability of the displacement of three Stokes fluids with constant viscosity in a porous medium when the middle fluid is contained in a bounded region. We use the Hele-Shaw model. The eigenfunctions of the stability system are the amplitudes of the linear perturbations. These amplitudes must be small. We get unbounded eigenfunctions. So the stability problem has no physical sense.
We study the high Reynolds number limit of a viscous fluid in the presence of a rough boundary. We consider the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier slip boundary condition, in a domain whose boundaries exhibit fast oscillations in the form $x_2 = \varepsilon^{1+α} η(x_1/\varepsilon)$, $α> 0$. Under suitable conditions on the oscillating parameter $\varepsilon$ and the viscosity $ν$, we show that solutions of the Navier-Stokes system converge to solutions of the Euler system in the vanishing limit of both $ν$ and $\varepsilon$. The main issue is that the curvature…
We are concerned with globally defined entropy solutions to the Euler equations for compressible fluid flows in transonic nozzles with general cross-sectional areas. Such nozzles include the de Laval nozzles and other more general nozzles whose cross-sectional area functions are allowed at the nozzle ends to be either zero (closed ends) or infinity (unbounded ends). To achieve this, in this paper, we develop a vanishing viscosity method to construct globally defined approximate solutions and then establish essential uniform estimates in weighted $L^p$ norms for the whole range of physical adia…
We establish the vanishing viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations to the isentropic Euler equations for one-dimensional compressible fluid flow. For the Navier-Stokes equations, there exist no natural invariant regions for the equations with the real physical viscosity term so that the uniform sup-norm of solutions with respect to the physical viscosity coefficient may not be directly controllable and, furthermore, convex entropy-entropy flux pairs may not produce signed entropy dissipation measures. To overcome these difficulties, we first develop uniform energy-type estimates with re…
In one-dimensional unbounded domains, we consider the equations of a planar compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow with constant viscosity and heat conductivity. More precisely, we prove the global existence of strong solutions to the MHD equations with large initial data satisfying the same conditions as those of Kazhikhov's theory in bounded domains (Kazhikhov 1987 Boundary Value Problems for Equations of Mathematical Physics (Krasnoyarsk)). In particular, our result generalizes the Kazhikhov's theory for the initial boundary value problem in bounded domains to the unbounded case.
We consider the initial boundary value problem for a model system of one-dimensional equations which describe unsteady polytropic motions of a mixture of viscous compressible fluids. We prove the global existence and uniqueness theorem for the strong solution without restrictions on the structure of the viscosity matrix except standard properties of symmetry and positiveness.
In one-dimensional unbounded domains, we prove global existence of strong solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes system for a viscous and heat conducting ideal polytropic gas, when the viscosity is constant and the heat conductivity $κ$ depends on the temperature $θ$ according to $κ=\barκθ^β(β>0)$. Note that the conditions imposed on the initial data are the same as those of the constant heat conductivity case ([Kazhikhov, A. V. Siberian Math. J. 23 (1982), 44-49]) and can be arbitrarily large. Therefore, our result generalizes Kazhikhov's result for the constant heat conductivity case to…
We study the large time behavior of solutions to two-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations linearized about shear flows of the mixing layer type in the unbounded channel $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$. Under a simple spectral stability assumption on a self-adjoint operator, we prove a local form of the linear inviscid damping that is uniform with respect to small viscosity. We also prove a local form of the enhanced viscous dissipation that takes place at times of order $ν^{-1/3}$, $ν$ being the small viscosity. To prove these results, we use a Hamiltonian approach, following the conju…
We consider a stochastic model which describes the motion of a 2D incompressible fluid in a unbounded domain with viscosity and memory effects. This model is different from the classical stochastic Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations due to the absence of the Voigt term $ -αΔu_{t}$, and has a much weaker dissipation than the usual Navier-Stokes-Voigt model since only the memory viscoelasticity is present. We are interested in the global well-posedness and long-time behaviors of this model. We first investigate the well-posedness by using the classical Faedo-Galerkin method. Unlike the general method…
We show that the homogeneous viscous Burgers equation $(\partial_t-ηΔ) u(t,x)+(u\cdot\nabla)u(t,x)=0,\ (t,x)\in{\mathbb{R}}_+\times{\mathbb{R}}^d$ $(d\ge 1, η>0)$ has a globally defined smooth solution if the initial condition $u_0$ is a smooth function growing like $o(|x|)$ at infinity. The proof relies mostly on estimates of the random characteristic flow defined by a Feynman-Kac representation of the solution. Viscosity independent a priori bounds for the solution are derived from these. The regularity of the solution is then proved for fixed $η>0$ using Schauder estimates. The result exten…
We consider the 3-D full Navier-Stokes equations whose the viscosity coefficients and the thermal conductivity coefficient depend on the density and the temperature. We prove the local existence and uniqueness of the strong solution in a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. The initial density may vanish in an open set and $Ω$ could be a bounded or unbounded domain. We also prove a blow-up criterion for the solution. Finally, we show the blow-up of the smooth solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq1$) when the initial density has compactly support and the initi…
We solve the stationary Navier-Stokes equations for non-Newtonian incompressible fluids with shear dependent viscosty in domains with unbounded outlets, in the case of shear thickening viscosity, i.e. the viscosity is given by the shear rate to the power p-2 where p>2. The flux assumes arbitrary given values and the Dirichlet integral of the velocity field grows at most linearly in the outlets of the domain. Under some smallness conditions on the "energy dispersion" we also show that the solution of this problem is unique. Our results are an extension of those obtained by O.A. Ladyzhenskaya an…
Motivated by numerical schemes for large scale geophysical flow, we consider the rotating shallow water and Boussinesq equations on the whole space with horizontal kinetic energy backscatter source terms built from negative viscosity and stabilising hyperviscosity with constant parameters. We study the impact of this energy input through various explicit flows, which are simultaneously solving the nonlinear equations and the linear equations that arise upon dropping the transport nonlinearity, i.e. the linearisation in the zero state. These include barotropic, parallel and Kolmogorov flows as …
We consider the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem $\partial_t u - F(t,x,u,Du,D^2 u) = 0 on (0,T)\times \R^n$ in viscosity sense. Comparison is established for bounded semi-continuous (sub-/super-)solutions under structural assumption (3.14) of the User's Guide plus a mild condition on $F$ such as to cope with the unbounded domain. Comparison on $(0,T]$, space-time regularity and existence are also discussed. Our analysis passes through an extension of the parabolic theorem of sums which appears to be useful in its own right.
