We study a nonlinear porous medium type equation involving the infinity Laplacian operator. We first consider the problem posed on a bounded domain and prove existence of maximal nonnegative viscosity solutions. Uniqueness is obtained for strictly positive solutions with Lipschitz in time data. We also describe the asymptotic behaviour for the Dirichlet problem in the class of maximal solutions. We then discuss the Cauchy problem posed in the whole space. As in the standard porous medium equation (PME), solutions which start with compact support exhibit a free boundary propagating with finite speed, but such propagation takes place only in the direction of the spatial gradient. The description of the asymptotic behaviour of the Cauchy Problem shows that the asymptotic profile and the rates of convergence and propagation exactly agree for large times with a one-dimensional PME.
We demonstrate the equivalence between the two popular models of nonlinear diffusion, the porous medium equation and the p-Laplacian equation. The equivalence is shown at the level of selfsimilar solutions.
We consider the flow of a viscous, incompressible, Newtonian fluid in a perforated domain in the plane. The domain is the exterior of a regular lattice of rigid particles. We study the simultaneous limit of vanishing particle size and distance, and of vanishing viscosity. Under suitable conditions on the particle size, particle distance, and viscosity, we prove that solutions of the Navier-Stokes system in the perforated domain converges to solutions of the Euler system, modeling inviscid, incompressible flow, in the full plane. That is, the flow is not disturbed by the porous medium and becom…
We investigate the regularizing effect of adding small fractional Laplacian, with critical fractional exponent 1/2, to a general first order HJB equation. Our results include some regularity estimates for the viscosity solutions of such perturbations, making the solutions classically well-defined. Most importantly, we use these regularity estimates to study the vanishing viscosity approximation to first order HJB equations by 1/2-Laplacian and derive an explicit rate convergence for the vanishing viscosity limit.
We prove interior Lipschitz regularity result for weak and viscosity solutions of the pseudo $p$Laplacien $(p-1)\sum_i |\partial_i u|^{p-2} \partial_{ii} u = f$ for $p>2$ and $f$ bounded.
In this work we extend the results in [6,32] on the 2D IPM system with constant viscosity (Atwood number $A_μ=0$) to the case of viscosity jump ($|A_μ|<1$). We prove a h-principle whereby (infinitely many) weak solutions in $C_tL_{w^*}^{\infty}$ are recovered via convex integration whenever a subsolution is provided. As a first example, non-trivial weak solutions with compact support in time are obtained. Secondly, we construct mixing solutions to the unstable Muskat problem with initial flat interface. As a byproduct, we check that the connection, established by Székelyhidi for $A_μ=0$, betwe…
We show that viscosity solutions to the normalized $p(x)$-Laplace equation coincide with distributional weak solutions to the strong $p(x)$-Laplace equation when $p$ is Lipschitz and $\inf p>1$. This yields $C^{1,α}$ regularity for the viscosity solutions of the normalized $p(x)$-Laplace equation. As an additional application, we prove a Radó-type removability theorem.
We consider different notions of solutions to the $p(x)$-Laplace equation $-÷(\abs{Du(x)}^{p(x)-2}Du(x))=0$ with $ 1<p(x)<\infty$. We show by proving a comparison principle that viscosity supersolutions and $p(x)$-superharmonic functions of nonlinear potential theory coincide. This implies that weak and viscosity solutions are the same class of functions, and that viscosity solutions to Dirichlet problems are unique. As an application, we prove a Radó type removability theorem.
We study the existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions to the $n$-dimensional ($n=2,3$) Camassa-Holm equations with fractional Laplacian viscosity with smooth initial data. It is a coupled system between the Navier-Stokes equations with nonlocal viscosity and a Helmholtz equation. The main difficulty lies in establishing some a priori estimates for the fractional Laplacian viscosity. To achieve this, we need to explore suitable fractional-power Sobolev-type estimates, and bilinear estimates for fractional derivatives. Especially, for the critical case $\displaystyle s=\frac{n}{4}$ with…
We consider the fractional porous medium flow introduced by Caffarelli-Vazquez and obtain local in time existence, uniqueness, and blow-up criterion for smooth solutions. The proof is based on establishing a commutator estimate involving fractional Laplacian operators.
We consider a porous medium equation with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. In a previous paper we have found mass-preserving, nonnegative weak solutions of the equation satisfying energy estimates. The equation is posed in the whole space R^n. Here we establish the large-time behaviour. We first find selfsimilar nonnegative solutions by solving an elliptic obstacle problem with fractional Laplacian for the pair pressure-density, which we call obstacle Barenblatt solutions. The theory for elliptic fractional problems with obstacles has been recently …
In this paper, we consider the $n$-dimensional ($n=2,3$) Camassa-Holm equations with fractional Laplacian viscosity in the whole space. In stark contrast to the Camassa-Holm equations without any nonlocal effect, to our best knowledge, little has been known on the large time behavior and convergence for the nonlocal equations under study. We first study the large time behavior of solutions. We then discuss the relation between the equations under consideration and the imcompressible Navier-Stokes equations with fractional Laplacian viscosity (INSF). The main difficulty to achieve them lies in …
We study a quite general family of nonlinear evolution equations of diffusive type with nonlocal effects. More precisely, we study porous medium equations with a fractional Laplacian pressure, and the problem is posed on a bounded space domain. We prove existence of weak solutions and suitable a priori bounds and regularity estimates.
We present a new proof for the equivalence of potential theoretic weak solutions and viscosity solutions to the $\texttt{p}(\cdot)$-Laplace equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The proof of the equivalence in the variable exponent case in Euclidean space was first given by Juutinen, Lukkari, and Parviainen (2010) and extended the equivalence of potential theoretic weak solutions and viscosity solutions to the $\texttt{p}$-Laplace equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$, given by Juutinen, Lindqvist, and Manfredi (2001). In both the fixed exponent case and the variable exponent case, the main argument is based on th…
We study a porous medium equation, with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. We pose the problem in n-dimensional space for all t>0 with bounded and compactly supported initial data, and prove existence of a weak and bounded solution that propagates with finite speed, a property that is nor shared by other fractional diffusion models.
This paper is concerned with the Minkowski convolution of viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear parabolic equations. We adopt this convolution to compare viscosity solutions of initial-boundary value problems in different domains. As a consequence, we can for instance obtain parabolic power concavity of solutions to a general class of parabolic equations. Our results apply to the Pucci operator, the normalized $q$-Laplacians with $1<q\leq\infty$, the Finsler Laplacian and more general quasilinear operators.
We study the linear stability of the displacement of three Stokes fluids with constant viscosity in a porous medium when the middle fluid is contained in a bounded region. We use the Hele-Shaw model. The eigenfunctions of the stability system are the amplitudes of the linear perturbations. These amplitudes must be small. We get unbounded eigenfunctions. So the stability problem has no physical sense.
We study radial viscosity solutions to the equation \[ -\ |Du\ |^{q-2}Δ_{p}^{N}u=f(\ |x\ |)\quad\text{in }B_{R}\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}, \] where $f\in C[0,R)$, $p,q\in(1,\infty)$ and $N\geq2$. Our main result is that $u(x)=v(\ |x\ |)$ is a bounded viscosity supersolution if and only if $v$ is a bounded weak supersolution to $-κΔ_{q}^{d}v=f$ in $(0,R)$, where $κ>0$ and $Δ_{q}^{d}$ is heuristically speaking the radial $q$-Laplacian in a fictitious dimension $d$. As a corollary we obtain the uniqueness of radial viscosity solutions. However, the full uniqueness of solutions remains an open problem.
We study a kind of generalized porous medium equation with fractional Laplacian and abstract pressure term. For a large class of equations corresponding to the form: $u_t+νΛ^βu=\nabla\cdot(u\nabla Pu)$, we get their local well-posedness in Fourier-Besov spaces for large initial data. If the initial data is small, then the solution becomes global. Furthermore, we prove a blowup criterion for the solutions.
We consider the one-dimensional Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity coefficient in highly compressible regime. It corresponds to the compressible Navier-Stokes system with large Mach number equal to $\frac{1}{\sqrt{\varepsilon}}$ for $\varepsilon$ going to $0$. When the initial velocity is related to the gradient of the initial density, a solution to the continuity equation-$ρ_\varepsilon$ converges to the unique solution to the porous medium equation [13,14]. For viscosity coefficient $μ(ρ_\varepsilon)=ρ_\varepsilon^α$ with $α>1$, we obtain a rate of conve…
The mathematical modeling of tumor growth leads to singular stiff pressure law limits for porous medium equations with a source term. Such asymptotic problems give rise to free boundaries, which, in the absence of active motion, are generalized Hele-Shaw flows. In this note we use viscosity solutions methods to study limits for porous medium-type equations with active motion. We prove the uniform convergence of the density under fairly general assumptions on the initial data, thus improving existing results. We also obtain some additional information/regularity about the propagating interfaces…
We prove the uniqueness of Hölder continuous weak solutions via duality argument and vanishing viscosity method for the Keller-Segel system of porous medium type equations coupled to the Stokes system in dimensions three. An important step is the estimate of the Green function of parabolic equations with lower order terms of variable coefficients, which seems to be of independent interest.
We present a Krylov-Safonov theory approach for the Hölder regularity of viscosity solutions to non-variational porous media type equations. We explore the peculiarity of this type of problem: either the equation falls in a uniformly elliptic regime or the eikonal mechanism takes care of the regularity. Our techniques are based on sliding paraboloids resulting in an ABP-type measure estimate. By combining such estimates, a diminishing of oscillation property is available, resulting in a regularity control in Hölder spaces.
The singular limit of the thin film Muskat problem is performed when the density (and possibly the viscosity) of the lighter fluid vanishes and the porous medium equation is identified as the limit problem. In particular, the height of the denser fluid is shown to converge towards the solution to the porous medium equation and an explicit rate for this convergence is provided in space dimension d $\le$ 4. Moreover, the limit of the height of the lighter fluid is determined in a certain regime and is given by the corresponding initial condition.
We study a porous medium equation with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. More precisely, $$ u_t=\nabla\cdot(u\nabla (-Δ)^{-s}u), \quad \ 0<s<1. $$ The problem is posed in $\{x\in\ren, t\in \re\}$ with nonnegative initial data $u(x,0)$ that are integrable and decay at infinity. A previous paper has established the existence of mass-preserving, nonnegative weak solutions satisfying energy estimates and finite propagation. Here we establish the boundedness and $C^α$ regularity of such weak solutions
In this paper we prove a Hölder regularity estimate for viscosity solutions of inhomogeneous equations governed by the infinite Laplace operator relative to a frame of vector fields.
We study a singularly perturbed problem related to infinity Laplacian operator with prescribed boundary values in a region. We prove that solutions are locally (uniformly) Lipschitz continuous, they grow as a linear function, are strongly non-degenerate and have porous level surfaces. Moreover, for some restricted cases we show the finiteness of the (n-1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure of level sets. The analysis of the asymptotic limits is carried out as well.
We prove the uniqueness for viscosity solutions of a differential equation involving the infinity-Laplacian with a variable exponent. A version of the Harnack's inequality is derived for this minimax problem.
In this paper we show how to use a Tug-of-War game to obtain existence of a viscosity solution to the infinity laplacian with non-homogeneous mixed boundary conditions. For a Lipschitz and positive function $g$ there exists a viscosity solution of the mixed boundary value problem, $$ \{\begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle -Δ_{\infty}u(x)=0\quad & \text{in} Ω, \displaystyle \frac{\partial u}{\partial n}(x)= g (x)\quad & \text{on} Γ_N, \displaystyle u(x)= 0 \quad & \text{on} Γ_D. \end{array}. $$
For a one-phase free boundary problem involving a fractional Laplacian, we prove that "flat free boundaries" are $C^{1,α}$. We recover the regularity results of Caffarelli for viscosity solutions of the classical Bernoulli-type free boundary problem with the standard Laplacian.
We consider four different models of nonlinear diffusion equations involving fractional Laplacians and study the existence and properties of classes of self-similar solutions. Such solutions are an important tool in developing the general theory. We introduce a number of transformations that allow us to map complete classes of solutions of one equation into those of another one, thus providing us with a number of new solutions, as well as interesting connections. Special attention is paid to the property of finite propagation.
We study entire viscosity solutions of the Allen-Cahn type equation for the truncated Laplacian that are either one dimensional or radial, in order to shed some light on a possible extension of the Gibbons conjecture in this degenerate elliptic setting.
Let $1<p \leq \infty$. We provide an asymptotic characterization of continuous viscosity solutions $u$ of the normalized $p$-Laplacian $Δ_{p\,\mathbb{G}}^N u=0$ in any Carnot group $\mathbb{G}$.
We establish the equivalence between the notions of weak and viscosity solutions for non-homogeneous equations whose main operator is the fractional p-Laplacian and the lower order term depends on $x$, $u$ and $D_s^p u$, being the last one a type of fractional derivative.
Aim of this paper is to prove necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometry of a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ in order that the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the infinity-Laplace equation in $Ω$ with constant source term admits a viscosity solution depending only on the distance from $\partial Ω$. This problem was previously addressed and studied by Buttazzo and Kawohl. In the light of some geometrical achievements reached in our recent paper "On the characterization of some classes of proximally smooth sets", we revisit the results obtained by Buttazzo and Kawohl and we prove stre…
We derive sharp regularity for viscosity solutions of an inhomogeneous infinity Laplace equation across the free boundary, when the right hand side does not change sign and satisfies a certain growth condition. We prove geometric regularity estimates for solutions and conclude that once the source term is comparable to a homogeneous function, then the free boundary is a porous set and hence, has zero Lebesgue measure. Additionally, we derive a Liouville type theorem. When near the origin the right hand side grows not faster than third degree homogeneous function, we show that if a non-negative…
In this article we derive the fractional porous medium equation for any power of the fractional Laplacian as the hydrodynamic limit of a microscopic dynamics of random particles with long range interactions, but the jump rate highly depends on the occupancy near the sites where the interactions take place.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions toward a multiwave pattern of the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law where the far field states are prescribed. Especially, we deal with the case when the flux function is convex or concave but linearly degenerate on some interval, and also the viscosity is a nonlinearly degenerate one (p-Laplacian type viscosity). When the corresponding Riemann problem admits a Riemann solution which consists of rarefaction waves and contact discontinuity, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward th…
We prove the existence of a principal eigenvalue associated to the $\infty$-Laplacian plus lower order terms and the Neumann boundary condition in a bounded smooth domain. As an application we get uniqueness and existence results for the Neumann problem and a decay estimate for viscosity solutions of the Neumann evolution problem.
We report on recent progress in the study of nonlinear diffusion equations involving nonlocal, long-range diffusion effects. Our main concern is the so-called fractional porous medium equation, $\partial_t u +(-Δ)^{s}(u^m)=0$, and some of its generalizations. Contrary to usual porous medium flows, the fractional version has infinite speed of propagation for all exponents $0<s<1$ and $m>0$; on the other hand, it also generates an $L^1$-contraction semigroup which depends continuously on the exponent of fractional differentiation and the exponent of the nonlinearity. After establishing the gener…
In this paper we find viscosity solutions to an elliptic system governed by two different operators (the Laplacian and the infinity Laplacian) using a probabilistic approach. We analyze a game that combines the Tug-of-War with Random Walks in two different boars. We show that these value functions converge uniformly to a viscosity solution of the elliptic system as the step size goes to zero. In addition, we show uniqueness for the elliptic system using pure PDE techniques.
We extend the symmetry result of Serrin and Weinberger from the Laplacian operator to the highly degenerate game-theoretic $p$-Laplacian operator and show that viscosity solutions of $-Δ_p^Nu=1$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ and $\tfrac{\partial u}{\partialν}=-c\neq 0$ on $\partialΩ$ can only exist on a bounded domain $Ω$ if $Ω$ is a ball.
In this paper we study a non-homogeneous Neumann problem, where the $p(x)$-Laplacian is involved and $p=\infty$ in a subdomain. By considering a suitable sequence $p_k$ of bounded variable exponents such that $p_k \to p$ and replacing $p$ with $p_k$ in the original problem, we prove the existence of a solution $u_k$ for each of those intermediate ones. We show that the limit of the $u_k$ exists and after giving a variational characterization of it, in the part of the domain where $p$ is bounded, we show that it is a viscosity solution in the part where $p=\infty$. Finally, we formulate the pro…
We study a porous medium equation with right hand side. The operator has nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. The derivative in time is also fractional of Caputo-type and which takes into account "memory''. The precise model is \[ D_t^α u - \text{div}(u(-Δ)^{-σ} u) = f, \quad 0<σ<1/2. \] We pose the problem over $\{t\in {\mathbb R}^+, x\in {\mathbb R}^n\}$ with nonnegative initial data $u(0,x)\geq 0 $ as well as right hand side $f\geq 0$. We first prove existence for weak solutions when $f,u(0,x)$ have exponential decay at infinity. Our main result is H…
This paper considers a family of non-diffusive active scalar equations where a viscosity type parameter enters the equations via the constitutive law that relates the drift velocity with the scalar field. The resulting operator is smooth when the viscosity is present but singular when the viscosity is zero. We obtain Gevrey-class local well-posedness results and convergence of solutions as the viscosity vanishes. We apply our results to two examples that are derived from physical systems: firstly a model for magnetostrophic turbulence in the Earth's fluid core and secondly flow in a porous med…
In this paper we study an evolution equation involving the normalized $p$-Laplacian and a bounded continuous source term. The normalized $p$-Laplacian is in non divergence form and arises for example from stochastic tug-of-war games with noise. We prove local $C^{α, \fracα{2}}$ regularity for the spatial gradient of the viscosity solutions. The proof is based on an improvement of flatness and proceeds by iteration.
We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of porous media equations driven by the fractional Laplacian when the initial data are positive finite Radon measures on the Euclidean space. For given solutions without a prescribed initial condition, the problem of existence and uniqueness of the initial trace is also addressed. By the same methods we can also treat weighted fractional porous media equations, with a weight that can be singular at the origin, and must have a sufficiently slow decay at infinity (power-like). In particular, we show that the Barenblatt-type solutions exis…
