In this work we extend the results in [6,32] on the 2D IPM system with constant viscosity (Atwood number $A_μ=0$) to the case of viscosity jump ($|A_μ|<1$). We prove a h-principle whereby (infinitely many) weak solutions in $C_tL_{w^*}^{\infty}$ are recovered via convex integration whenever a subsolution is provided. As a first example, non-trivial weak solutions with compact support in time are obtained. Secondly, we construct mixing solutions to the unstable Muskat problem with initial flat interface. As a byproduct, we check that the connection, established by Székelyhidi for $A_μ=0$, between the subsolution and the Lagrangian relaxed solution of Otto, holds for $|A_μ|<1$ too. For different viscosities, we show how a pinch singularity in the relaxation prevents the two fluids from mixing wherever there is neither Rayleigh-Taylor nor vorticity at the interface.
In this work we consider weak solutions of the incompressible 2-D porous media equation. By using the approach of De Lellis-Székelyhidi we prove non-uniqueness for solutions in $L^\infty$ in space and time.
We construct examples of solutions to the incompressible porous media (IPM) equation that must exhibit infinite in time growth of derivatives provided they remain smooth. As an application, this allows us to obtain nonlinear instability for a class of stratified steady states of IPM.
In this paper we study the model of heat transfer in a porous medium with a critical diffusion. We obtain global existence and uniqueness of solutions to the equations of heat transfer of incompressible fluid in Besov spaces $\dot B^{3/p}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with $1\le p\le\infty$ by the method of modulus of continuity and Fourier localization technique.
A phase-field model for two-phase immiscible, incompressible porous media flow with surface tension effects is considered. The pore-scale model consists of a strongly coupled system of Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations. The fluids are separated by an evolving diffuse interface of a finite width depending on the scale parameter $\varepsilon$ in the considered model. At first the well-posedness of a coupled system of partial differential equations at micro scale is investigated. We obtained the homogenized equations for the microscopic model via unfolding operator and two-scale convergence approach…
It was shown recently by Cordoba, Faraco and Gancedo that the 2D porous media equation admits weak solutions with compact support in time. The proof, based on the convex integration framework, uses ideas from the theory of laminates, in particular T4 configurations. In this note we calculate the explicit relaxation of IPM, thus avoiding T4 configurations. We then use this to construct weak solutions to the unstable interface problem (the Muskat problem), as a byproduct shedding new light on the gradient flow approach introduced by Otto.
We show that the widely used model governing the motion of two incompressible immiscible fluids in a possibly heterogeneous porous medium has a formal gradient flow structure. More precisely, the fluid composition is governed by the gradient flow of some non-smooth energy. Starting from this energy together with a dissipation potential, we recover the celebrated Darcy-Muskat law and the capillary pressure law governing the flow thanks to the principle of least action. Our interpretation does not require the introduction of any algebraic transformation like, e.g., the global pressure or the Kir…
In this study, we analyze the behavior of monotone traveling waves of a one-dimensional porous medium equation modeling mechanical properties of living tissues. We are interested in the asymptotics where the pressure, which governs the diffusion process and limits the creation of new cells, becomes very stiff, and the porous medium equation degenerates towards a free boundary problem of Hele-Shaw type. This is the so-called incompressible limit. The solutions of the limit Hele-Shaw problem then couple "free dynamics" with zero pressure, and "incompressible dynamics" with positive pressure and …
In this paper we study a singularly modified version of the incompressible porous media equation. We investigate the implications for the local well-posedness of the equations by modifying, with a fractional derivative, the constitutive relation between the scalar density and the convecting divergence free velocity vector. Our analysis is motivated by recent work \cite{CCCGW} where it is shown that for the surface quasi-geostrophic equation such a singular modification of the constitutive law for the velocity, quite surprisingly still yields a locally well-posed problem. In contrast, for the s…
In this paper we discuss a model describing global behavior of the two phase incompressible flow in fractured porous media. The fractured media is regarded as a porous medium consisting of two superimposed continua, a connected fracture system, which is assumed to be thin of order $\varepsilonδ$, and an $\varepsilon$-periodic system of disjoint matrix blocks. We derive global behavior of the fractured media by passing to the limit as $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$ and then as the relative fracture thickness $δ\rightarrow 0$, taking into account that the permeability of the blocks is proportional t…
In this paper we study the heat transfer with a general fractional diffusion term of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium governed by Darcy's law. We show formation of singularities with infinite energy and for finite energy we obtain existence and uniqueness results of strong solutions for the sub-critical and critical cases. We prove global existence of weak solutions for different cases. Moreover, we obtain the decay of the solution in $L^p$, for any $p\geq2$, and the asymptotic behavior is shown. Finally, we prove the existence of an attractor in a weak sense and, for the sub-critica…
We consider the flow of a viscous, incompressible, Newtonian fluid in a perforated domain in the plane. The domain is the exterior of a regular lattice of rigid particles. We study the simultaneous limit of vanishing particle size and distance, and of vanishing viscosity. Under suitable conditions on the particle size, particle distance, and viscosity, we prove that solutions of the Navier-Stokes system in the perforated domain converges to solutions of the Euler system, modeling inviscid, incompressible flow, in the full plane. That is, the flow is not disturbed by the porous medium and becom…
We study the incompressible limit of the porous medium equation with a reaction term that is non-monotone with respect to the pressure variable. More specifically we consider reaction terms that are either bistable or monostable. We show that this type of reaction term generates many interesting differences in the qualitative behavior of solutions, in contrast to the problem with monotone reaction terms that have been extensively studied in recent literature. After characterizing the limit problem, we embark on a comprehensive study of the problem in one space dimension, to illustrate the deli…
We investigate the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with Navier boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. We obtain the uniform regularity of solutions with respect to the kinematic viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusivity coefficient. These solutions are uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and $W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ which allow us to take the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit. Moreover, we also get the rates of convergence.
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with vanishing viscosity coefficients and general initial data in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ $ (d=2$ or 3). It is rigorously showed that, as the Mach number, the shear viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusion coefficient simultaneously go to zero, the weak solution of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converges to the strong solution of the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as long as the latter exists.
We study a nonlinear porous medium type equation involving the infinity Laplacian operator. We first consider the problem posed on a bounded domain and prove existence of maximal nonnegative viscosity solutions. Uniqueness is obtained for strictly positive solutions with Lipschitz in time data. We also describe the asymptotic behaviour for the Dirichlet problem in the class of maximal solutions. We then discuss the Cauchy problem posed in the whole space. As in the standard porous medium equation (PME), solutions which start with compact support exhibit a free boundary propagating with finite …
We show the existence and the regularity properties of the weak solutions to the two-dimensional stationary incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity coefficient, by analyzing a fourth-order nonlinear elliptic equation for the stream function. The density function and the viscosity coefficient may have large variations. In addition, we formulate the solutions for the parallel, concentric and radial flows respectively, and as examples we calculate the solutions with piecewise-constant viscosity coefficients explicitly.
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for the 3D nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition. We establish the local well-posedness of the strong solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing viscosity limit process is established and a strong rate of convergence is obtained as the boundary of the domain is flat. In addition, it is needed to add some additional condition for density to match well the boundary condition.
This manuscript is a survey on results related to boundary layers and the vanishing viscosity limit for incompressible flow. It is the lecture notes for a 10 hour minicourse given at the Morningside Center, Academia Sinica, Beijing, PRC from 11/28 to 12/07, 2007. The main topics covered are: a derivation of Prandtl's boundary layer equation; an outline of the rigorous theory of Prandtl's equation, without proofs; Kato's criterion for the vanishing viscosity limit; the vanishing viscosity limit with Navier friction condition; rigorous boundary layer theory for the Navier friction condition and …
We show strong convergence of the vorticities in the vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the two-dimensional torus, assuming only that the initial vorticity of the limiting Euler equations is in $L^p$ for some $p>1$. This substantially extends a recent result of Constantin, Drivas and Elgindi, who proved strong convergence in the case $p=\infty$. Our proof, which relies on the classical renormalization theory of DiPerna-Lions, is surprisingly simple.
We consider three-dimensional (3D) Boussinesq convection system of an incompressible fluid in a closed sample of a porous medium. Specifically, we introduce and analyze a 3D Brinkman-Forchheimer-Bénard convection problem describing the behavior of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium between two plates heated from the bottom and cooled from the top. We show the existence and uniqueness of global in-time solutions, and the existence of absorbing balls in $L^2$ and $H^1$. Eventually, we comment on the applicability of a data assimilation algorithm to our system.
We study the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a general capillary term. Thanks to recent methods based on Lagrangian change of variables, we obtain local well-posedness in critical Besov spaces (even if the integration index p is different from 2) and for variable viscosity and capillary terms. In the case of constant coefficients and for initial data that are perturbations of a constant state, we are able to prove that the lifespan goes to infinity as the capillary coefficient goes to zero, connecting our result to the global existence result obtained by Danchin …
We study statistical solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation and their vanishing viscosity limit. We show that a formulation using correlation measures, which are probability measures accounting for spatial correlations, and moment equations is equivalent to statistical solutions in the Foias-Prodi sense. Under the assumption of weak scaling, a weaker version of Kolmogorov's self-similarity at small scales hypothesis that allows for intermittency corrections, we show that the limit is a statistical solution of the incompressible Euler equations. To pass to the limit, we derive a…
There are a few examples of solutions to the incompressible Euler equations which are piecewise smooth with a discontinuity of the tangential velocity across a hypersurface evolving in time: the so-called vortex sheets. An important open problem is to determine whether or not these solutions can be obtained as zero viscosity limits of the incompressible Navier-Stokes solutions in the energy space. In this paper we establish a couple of sufficient conditions similar to the one obtained by Kato in [T.~Kato. Remarks on zero viscosity limit for nonstationary Navier-Stokes flows with boundary. Semi…
Global Existence and Incompressible Limit for the Three-Dimensional Axisymmetric Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Bulk Viscosity and Large Initial Data
In this paper, we are concerned with the vanishing viscosity problem for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with helical symmetry, in the whole space. We choose viscosity-dependent initial $\bu_0^ν$ with helical swirl, an analogue of the swirl component of axisymmetric flow, of magnitude $\mathcal{O}(ν)$ in the $L^2$ norm; we assume $\bu_0^ν\to \bu_0$ in $H^1$. The new ingredient in our analysis is a decomposition of helical vector fields, through which we obtain the required estimates.
In this note we analyze a model for a unidirectional unsteady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid with time dependent viscosity. A possible way to take into account such behaviour is to introduce a memory formalism, including thus the time dependent viscosity by using an integro-differential term and therefore generalizing the classical equation of a Newtonian viscous fluid. A possible useful choice, in this framework, is to use a rheology based on stress/strain relation generalized by fractional calculus modelling. This is a model that can be used in applied problems, taking into account a…
Global Existence and Incompressible Limit of the Cauchy Problem for 2D Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Bulk Viscosity and Large Initial Data
Several fluid systems are characterised by time reversal and parity breaking. Examples of such phenomena arise both in quantum and classical hydrodynamics. In these situations, the viscosity tensor, often dubbed ``odd viscosity'', becomes non-dissipative. At the mathematical level, this fact translates into a loss of derivatives at the level of \textsl{a priori} estimates: while the odd viscosity term depends on derivatives of the velocity field, no parabolic smoothing effect can be expected. In the present paper, we establish a well-posedness theory in Sobolev spaces for a system of incompres…
We initiate the study of stability of solutions of the 2D inviscid incompressible porous medium equation (IPM). We begin by classifying all stationary solutions of the inviscid IPM under mild conditions. We then prove some linear stability results. We then study solutions of the IPM equation which are sufficiently regular perturbations of linearly stable steady states. We prove that sufficiently regular perturbations which are also small must be globally regular and strongly converge to a steady state. The mechanism behind the stability is \emph{stratification} as opposed to previous stability…
In this paper we obtain new well-possedness results concerning a linear inhomogenous Stokes-like system. These results are used to establish local well-posedness in the critical spaces for initial density $ρ_{0}$ and velocity $u_{0}$ such that $ρ_{0}-ρ\in\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac{3}{p}}(\mathbb{R}^{3})$, $u_{0}\in\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac{3}{p}-1}(\mathbb{R}^{3})$, $p\in\left( \frac{6}{5},4\right) $, for the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with variable viscosity. To the best of our knowledge, regarding the $3D$ case, this is the first result in a truly critical framework for which one…
We describe the competitive motion of (N + 1) incompressible immiscible phases within a porous medium as the gradient flow of a singular energy in the space of non-negative measures with prescribed mass endowed with some tensorial Wasserstein distance. We show the convergence of the approximation obtained by a minimization schemè a la [R. Jordan, D. Kinder-lehrer \& F. Otto, SIAM J. Math. Anal, 29(1):1--17, 1998]. This allow to obtain a new existence result for a physically well-established system of PDEs consisting in the Darcy-Muskat law for each phase, N capillary pressure relations, and a …
In this short note, we study the local well-posedness of a 3D model for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with partial viscosity. This model was originally proposed by Hou-Lei in \cite{HouLei09a}. In a recent paper, we prove that this 3D model with partial viscosity will develop a finite time singularity for a class of initial condition using a mixed Dirichlet Robin boundary condition. The local well-posedness analysis of this initial boundary value problem is more subtle than the corresponding well-posedness analysis using a standard boundary condition because the Robin boundary conditio…
We investigate the uniform regularity and vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. It is shown that there exists a unique strong solution of the incompressible chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system in a finite time interval which is independent of the viscosity coefficient. Moreover, the solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space, which allows us to take the vanishing viscosity limit to obtain the incompressible inviscid chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system.
We show that in bounded domains with no-slip boundary conditions, the Navier-Stokes pressure can be determined in a such way that it is strictly dominated by viscosity. As a consequence, in a general domain we can treat the Navier-Stokes equations as a perturbed vector diffusion equation, instead of as a perturbed Stokes system. We illustrate the advantages of this view in a number of ways. In particular, we provide simple proofs of (i) local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for an unconstrained formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, and (ii) the unconditional stabilit…
The Muskat problem involves filtration of two incompressible fluids throughout a porous medium. In this paper we shall discuss in 3-D the relevance of the Rayleigh-Taylor condition, and the topology of the initial interface, in order to prove its local existence in Sobolev spaces.
In this paper, we investigate the time decay behavior to Lions weak solution of 2D incompressible density-dependent Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity.
