This paper is aimed to establish well-posedness in several settings for the Cauchy problem associated to a model arising in the study of capillary-gravity flows. More precisely, we determinate local well-posedness conclusions in classical Sobolev spaces and some spaces adapted to the energy of the equation. A key ingredient is a commutator estimate involving the Hilbert transform and fractional derivatives. We also study local well-posedness for the associated periodic initial value problem. Additionally, by determining well-posedness in anisotropic weighted Sobolev spaces as well as some unique continuation principles, we characterize the spatial behavior of solutions of this model. As a further consequence of our results, we derive new conclusions for the Shrira equation which appears in the context of waves in shear flows.
This paper is devoted to the 2D gravity-capillary water waves equations in their Hamiltonian formulation, addressing the general question of proving Morawetz inequalities. We continue the analysis initiated in our previous work, where we have established local energy decay estimates for gravity waves. Here we add surface tension and prove a stronger estimate with a local regularity gain, akin to the smoothing effect for dispersive equations. Our main result holds globally in time and holds for genuinely nonlinear waves, since we are only assuming some very mild uniform Sobolev bounds for the s…
We present local existence and uniqueness results for the following $2+1$ dispersive diffusive equation due to P. Hall arising in modeling of river braiding: $$u_{yyt} - γu_{xxx} -αu_{yyyy} - βu_{yy} + \left (u^2 \right)_{xyy} = 0$$ for $(x,y) \in [0, 2π] \times [0, π]$, $t> 0$, with boundary condition $u_{y}=0=u_{yyy}$ at $y=0$ and $y=π$ and $2π$ periodicity in $x$, using a contraction mapping argument in a Bourgain-type space $T_{s,b}$. We also show that the energy $\| u \|^2_{L^2} $ and cumulative dissipation $\int_0^t \| u_y \|_{L^2}^2 dt$ are globally controlled in time.
We use exponential sums to study the fractal dimension of the graphs of solutions to linear dispersive PDE. Our techniques apply to Schrödinger, Airy, Boussinesq, the fractional Schrödinger, and the gravity and gravity-capillary water wave equations. We also discuss applications to certain nonlinear dispersive equations. In particular, we obtain bounds for the dimension of the graph of the solution to cubic nonlinear Schrödinger and Korteweg-de Vries equations along oblique lines in space-time.
Water waves are well-known to be dispersive at the linearization level. Considering the fully nonlinear systems, we prove for reasonably smooth solutions the optimal Strichartz estimates for pure gravity waves and the semi-classical Strichartz estimates for gravity-capillary waves; for both 2D and 3D waves. Here, by optimal we mean the gains of regularity (over the Sobolev embedding from Sobolev spaces to Hölder spaces) obtained for the linearized systems. Our proofs combine the paradifferential reductions of Alazard-Burq-Zuily with a dispersive estimate using a localized wave package type par…
We consider in this article the system of gravity-capillary waves in all dimensions and under the Zakharov/Craig-Sulem formulation. Using a paradifferential approach introduced by Alazard-Burq-Zuily, we symmetrize this system into a quasilinear dispersive equation whose principal part is of order $3/2$. The main novelty, compared to earlier studies, is that this reduction is performed at the Sobolev regularity of quasilinear pdes: $H^s(R^d)$ with $s\textgreater{}3/2+d/2$, $d$ being the dimension of the free surface. From this reduction, we deduce a blow-up criterion involving solely the Lipsch…
The aim of this paper is to show how a weakly dispersive perturbation of the inviscid Burgers equation improve (enlarge) the space of resolution of the local Cauchy problem. More generally we will review several problems arising from weak dispersive perturbations of nonlinear hyperbolic equations or systems.
The objective of the present work is to provide a well-posedness result for a capillary driven thin film equation with insoluble surfactant. The resulting parabolic system of evolution equations is not only strongly coupled and degenerated, but also of mixed orders. To the best of our knowledge the only well-posedness result for a capillary driven thin film with surfactant is provided in [4] by the same author, where a severe smallness condition on the surfactant concentration is assumed to prove the result. Thus, in spite of an intensive analytical study of thin film equations with surfactant…
We prove reducibility of a class of quasi-periodically forced linear equations of the form \[ \partial_tu-\partial_x\circ (1+a(ωt, x))u+\mathcal{Q}(ωt)u=0,\quad x\in\mathbb{T}:=\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}, \] where $u=u(t,x)$, $a$ is a small, $C^{\infty}$ function, $\mathcal{Q}$ is a pseudo differential operator of order $-1$, provided that $ω\in\mathbb{R}^ν$ satisfies appropriate non-resonance conditions. Such PDEs arise by linearizing the Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation at a small amplitude quasi-periodic function. Our work provides a first fundamental step in developing a KAM theory for pertur…
We consider the initial value problem associated to a large class of fifth order nonlinear dispersive equations. This class includes several models arising in the study of different physical phenomena. Our aim is to establish special (space) decay properties of solutions to these systems. These properties complement previous unique continuation results and in some case, show that they are optimal. These decay estimates reflect the "parabolic character" of these dispersive models in exponential weighted spaces. This principle was first obtained by T. Kato in solutions of the KdV equation
We present a time-local existence theorem of the initial value problem for a third-order dispersive evolution equation for open curves on compact almost Hermitian manifolds arising in the geometric analysis of vortex filaments. This equation causes the so-called loss of one-derivative since the target manifold is not supposed to be a Kähler manifold. We overcome this difficulty by using a gauge transformation of a multiplier on the pull-back bundle to eliminate the bad first order terms essentially.
In this paper we prove global regularity for the full water waves system in 3 dimensions for small data, under the influence of both gravity and surface tension. This problem presents essential difficulties which were absent in all of the earlier global regularity results for other water wave models. To construct global solutions we use a combination of energy estimates and matching dispersive estimates. There is a significant new difficulty in proving energy estimates in our problem, namely the combination of slow pointwise decay of solutions (no better than $|t|^{-5/6}$) and the presence of …
An outstanding problem in Earth science is understanding the method of transport of magma in the Earth's mantle. Models for this process, transport in a viscously deformable porous media, give rise to scalar degenerate, dispersive, nonlinear wave equations. We establish a general local well-posedness for a physical class of data (roughly $H^1$) via fixed point methods. The strategy requires positive lower bounds on the solution. This is extended to global existence for a subset of possible nonlinearities by making use of certain conservation laws associated with the equations. Furthermore, we …
In this paper, we study the forced mean curvature flows and the prescribed mean curvature equations of both graphs and level-sets with capillary-type boundary conditions on a $C^3$ bounded domain, which is not necessarily convex. We prove a priori gradient estimates locally Lipschitz in time. Under an assumption on the forcing term, we prove that the gradient estimates are globally Lipschitz in time. As a consequence, we obtain the existence theorem of solutions. In our formulation, we recover the known results of the gradient estimates on a strictly convex $C^3$ bounded domain. Next, we study…
In this Letter we consider long capillary-gravity waves described by a fully nonlinear weakly dispersive model. First, using the phase space analysis methods we describe all possible types of localized travelling waves. Then, we especially focus on the critical regime, where the surface tension is exactly balanced by the gravity force. We show that our long wave model with a critical Bond number admits stable travelling wave solutions with a singular crest. These solutions are usually referred to in the literature as peakons or peaked solitary waves. They satisfy the usual speed-amplitude rela…
We consider non-selfadjoint operators of the kind arising in linearized NLS and prove dispersive bounds for the time-evolution without assuming that the edges of the essential spectrum are regular. Our approach does not depend on any specific properties of NLS. Rather, it is axiomatic on the linear level, and our results are obtained from four assumptions (which are of course motivated by NLS). This work is in three dimensions.
This paper studies the nonlinear stability of capillary-gravity waves propagating along the interface dividing two immiscible fluid layers of finite depth. The motion in both regions is governed by the incompressible and irrotational Euler equations, with the density of each fluid being constant but distinct. A diverse collection of small-amplitude solitary wave solutions for this system have been constructed by several authors in the case of strong surface tension (as measured by the Bond number) and slightly subcritical Froude number. We prove that all of these waves are (conditionally) orbi…
In this note, we prove local-in-time well-posedness for a fully dispersive Boussinesq system arising in the context of free surface water waves in two and three spatial dimensions. Those systems can be seen as a weak nonlocal dispersive perturbation of the shallow-water system. Our method of proof relies on energy estimates and a compactness argument. However, due to the lack of symmetry of the nonlinear part, those traditional methods have to be supplemented with the use of a modified energy in order to close the a priori estimates.
In this note, we propose several unsolved problems concerning the irrotational oscillation of a water droplet under zero gravity. We will derive the governing equation of this physical model, and convert it to a quasilinear dispersive partial differential equation defined on the sphere, which formally resembles the capillary water waves equation but describes oscillation defined on curved manifold instead. Three types of unsolved mathematical problems related to this model will be discussed in observation of hydrodynamical experiments under zero gravity: (1) Strichartz type inequalities for th…
This article describes the use of algebraic methods in a phase plane analysis of ordinary differential equations. The method is illustrated by the study of capillary-gravity steady surface waves propagating in shallow water. We consider the (fully nonlinear, weakly dispersive) Serre-Green-Naghdi equations with surface tension, because it provides a tractable model that, in the same time, is not too simple so the interest of the method can be emphasised. In particular, we analyse a special class of solutions, the solitary waves, which play an important role in many fields of Physics. In capilla…

The present paper is concerned with the analysis of two strongly coupled systems of degenerate parabolic partial differential equations arising in multiphase thin film flows. In particular, we consider the two-phase thin film Muskat problem and the two-phase thin film approximation of the Stokes flow under the influence of both, capillary and gravitational forces. The existence of global weak solutions for medium size initial data in large function spaces is proved. Moreover, exponential decay results towards the equilibrium state are established, where the decay rate can be estimated by expli…
In this paper we present a rigorous modulational stability theory for periodic traveling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type. We first argue that, for Hamiltonian dispersive equations with a non-singular symplectic form and $d$ conserved quantities (in addition to the Hamiltonian), one expects that generically ${\mathcal L}$, the linearization around a periodic traveling wave, will have a $2d$ dimensional generalized kernel, with a particular Jordan structure: The kernel of ${\mathcal L}$ is expected to be $d$ dimensional, the first generalized kernel is expected to…
We study the transport property of Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces of periodic functions under the dynamics of the one-dimensional cubic fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. For the case of second-order dispersion or greater, we establish an optimal regularity result for the quasi-invariance of these Gaussian measures, following the approach by Debussche and Tsutsumi [15]. Moreover, we obtain an explicit formula for the Radon-Nikodym derivative and, as a corollary, a formula for the two-point function arising in wave turbulence theory. We also obtain improved regularity results in th…
