In the first part of this paper we prove that the flow associated to a dispersive Burgers equation with a non local term
of the form $|D|^{α-1} \partial_x u$, $α\in [1,+\infty[$ is Lipschitz from bounded sets of $H^s_0(\mathbb{T};\mathbb{R})$ to $C^0([0,T],H^{s-(2-α)^+}_0(\mathbb{T};\mathbb{R}))$ for $T>0$ and $s>\lceil \fracα{α-1}\rceil-\frac{1}{2}$, where $H^s_0$ are the Sobolev spaces of functions with $0$ mean value, proving that the result obtained in [37] is optimal on the torus. The proof relies on a paradifferential generalization of a complex Cole-Hopf gauge transformation introduced by T.Tao in [43] for the Benjamin-Ono equation.
For this we prove a generalization of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula for flows of hyperbolic paradifferential equations and prove the stability of the class of paradifferential operators modulo more regular remainders, under conjugation by such flows. For this we prove a new characterization of paradifferential operators in the spirit of Beals [9].
In the second part of this paper we use a paradifferential version of the previous method to prove that a re-normalization of the flow of the one dimensional periodic gravity capillary equation is Lipschitz from bounded sets of $H^s$ to $C^0([0,T],H^{s-\frac{1}{2}})$ for $T>0$ and $s>3+\frac{1}{2}$. This proves that the result obtained in [37] is optimal for the water waves system.
We consider a class of dispersive and dissipative perturbations of the inviscid Burgers equation, which includes the fractional KdV equation of order $α$, and the fractal Burgers equation of order $β$, where $α, β\in [0,1)$, and the Whitham equation. For all $α, β\in [0,1)$, we construct solutions whose gradient blows up at a point, and whose amplitude stays bounded, which therefore display a "shock-like" singularity. We moreover provide an asymptotic description of the blow-up. To our knowledge, this constitutes the first proof of gradient blow-up for the fKdV equation in the range $α\in [2/3…
The aim of this paper is to show how a weakly dispersive perturbation of the inviscid Burgers equation improve (enlarge) the space of resolution of the local Cauchy problem. More generally we will review several problems arising from weak dispersive perturbations of nonlinear hyperbolic equations or systems.
We study the multi-dimensional Burgers equation $u_t + u u_{x_1} + \dots + u^d u_{x_d} = 0$. We prove that the $L^\infty$ norm of entropy solutions of this equation decays polynomially as $t \to \infty$ in terms of the $L^1$ norm of the initial data only.
We show that the Cauchy problem for a class of dispersive perturbations of Burgers' equations containing the low dispersion Benjamin-Ono equation $\partial$\_t u -- D^$α$\_x $\partial$\_x u = $\partial$\_x(u^2), 0 < $α$ $\le$ 1, is locally well-posed in H^s (R) when s > 3 /2 -- 5$α$ /4. As a consequence, we obtain global well-posedness in the energy space H^{$α$/2} (R) as soon as $α$ > 6/7 .
The Cauchy problem for a scalar conservation laws admits a unique entropy solution when the data $u_0$ is a bounded measurable function (Kruzhkov). The semi-group $(S_t)_{t\ge0}$ is contracting in the $L^1$-distance. For the multi-dimensional Burgers equation, we show that $(S_t)_{t\ge0}$ extends uniquely as a continuous semi-group over $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ whenever $1\le p<\infty$, and $u(t):=S_tu_0$ is actually an entropy solution to the Cauchy problem. When $p\le q\le \infty$ and $t>0$, $S_t$ actually maps $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ into $L^q(\mathbb{R}^n)$. These results are based upon new dispers…
This paper is aimed to establish well-posedness in several settings for the Cauchy problem associated to a model arising in the study of capillary-gravity flows. More precisely, we determinate local well-posedness conclusions in classical Sobolev spaces and some spaces adapted to the energy of the equation. A key ingredient is a commutator estimate involving the Hilbert transform and fractional derivatives. We also study local well-posedness for the associated periodic initial value problem. Additionally, by determining well-posedness in anisotropic weighted Sobolev spaces as well as some uniq…
This paper is devoted to the study of initial-boundary value problems for time-fractional analogues of Korteweg-de Vries, Benjamin-Bona-Mahony, Burgers, Rosenau, Camassa-Holm, Degasperis-Procesi, Ostrovsky and time-fractional modified Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equations on a bounded domain. Sufficient conditions for the blowing-up of solutions in finite time of aforementioned equations are presented. We also discuss the maximum principle and influence of gradient non-linearity on the global solvability of initial-boundary value problems for the time-fractional Burgers equation. The main tool o…
The wave turbulence equation is an effective kinetic equation that describes the dynamics of wave spectrum in weakly nonlinear and dispersive media. Such a kinetic model has been derived by physicists in the sixties, though the well-posedness theory remains open, due to the complexity of resonant interaction kernels. In this paper, we provide a global unique radial strong solution, the first such a result, to the wave turbulence equation for capillary waves.
Persistence problems in weighted spaces have been studied for different dispersive models involving non-local operators. Generally, these models do not propagate polynomial weights of arbitrary magnitude, and the maximum decay rate is associated with the dispersive part of the equation. Altogether, this analysis is complemented by unique continuation principles that determine optimal spatial decay. This work is intended to establish the above questions for a weakly dispersive perturbation of the inviscid Burgers equation. More precisely, we consider the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation, w…
We complete the known results on the local Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces for the KdV-Burgers equation by proving that this equation is well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\R) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\R) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\R))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\R) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\R) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\R) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. As far as we know, this is the first result of this type for a dispersive-dissipative equation. The framework we develop here should be very us…
In this paper we prove global regularity for the full water waves system in 3 dimensions for small data, under the influence of both gravity and surface tension. This problem presents essential difficulties which were absent in all of the earlier global regularity results for other water wave models. To construct global solutions we use a combination of energy estimates and matching dispersive estimates. There is a significant new difficulty in proving energy estimates in our problem, namely the combination of slow pointwise decay of solutions (no better than $|t|^{-5/6}$) and the presence of …
We give a substantially simplified proof of near-optimal estimate on the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation from [F. Otto, "Optimal bounds on the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation", JFA 2009], at the same time slightly improving the result. The result in the above cited paper relied on two ingredients: a regularity estimate for capillary Burgers and an a novel priori estimate for the inhomogeneous inviscid Burgers equation, which works out that in many ways the conservative transport nonlinearity acts as a coercive term. It is the proof of the second ingredient that we substantially simplify by proving…
We are interested in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the Burgers, and the Whitham limit for a spatially periodic Boussinesq model with non-small contrast. We prove estimates between the KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham approximation and true solutions of the original system which guarantee that these amplitude equations make correct predictions about the dynamics of the spatially periodic Boussinesq model over the natural time scales of the amplitude equations. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis and energy estimates. The result is the first justification result of the KdV, the Burgers, an…
We prove the existence of highest, cusped, periodic travelling-wave solutions with exact and optimal $ α$-Hölder continuity in a class of fractional negative-order dispersive equations of the form \begin{equation*} u_t + (| \mathrm{D} |^{- α} u + n(u) )_x = 0 \end{equation*} for every $ α\in (0, 1) $ with homogeneous Fourier multiplier $ | \mathrm{D} |^{ - α} $. We tackle nonlinearities $ n(u) $ of the type $ | u |^p $ or $ u | u |^{p - 1} $ for all real $ p > 1 $, and show that when $ n $ is odd, the waves also feature antisymmetry and thus contain inverted cusps. Tools involve detailed point…
We use exponential sums to study the fractal dimension of the graphs of solutions to linear dispersive PDE. Our techniques apply to Schrödinger, Airy, Boussinesq, the fractional Schrödinger, and the gravity and gravity-capillary water wave equations. We also discuss applications to certain nonlinear dispersive equations. In particular, we obtain bounds for the dimension of the graph of the solution to cubic nonlinear Schrödinger and Korteweg-de Vries equations along oblique lines in space-time.
In this work we study a dispersive equation with a dissipative term, the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation. First we prove that the initial value problem for this equation is well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb{R}),$ for $s\geq 0$ and ill-posed if $s< 0.$ The ill-posedness is in the sense that the flow-map cannot be continuous at the origin from $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ to even $\mathcal{D}'(\mathbb{R}).$ Additionally, we establish an exact theory of convergence of the periodic solutions to the continuous one, in Sobolev spaces, as the period goes to infinity.
We prove several dispersive estimates for the linear part of the Full Dispersion Kadomtsev-Petviashvili introduced by David Lannes to overcome some shortcomings of the classical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. The proof of these estimates combines the stationary phase method with sharp asymptotics on asymmetric Bessel functions, which may be of independent interest. As a consequence, we prove that the initial value problem associated to the Full Dispersion Kadomtsev-Petviashvili is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb R^2)$, for $s>\frac74$, in the capillary-gravity setting.
This paper is devoted to the 2D gravity-capillary water waves equations in their Hamiltonian formulation, addressing the general question of proving Morawetz inequalities. We continue the analysis initiated in our previous work, where we have established local energy decay estimates for gravity waves. Here we add surface tension and prove a stronger estimate with a local regularity gain, akin to the smoothing effect for dispersive equations. Our main result holds globally in time and holds for genuinely nonlinear waves, since we are only assuming some very mild uniform Sobolev bounds for the s…
We consider the Kudryashov-Sinelshchikov equation, which contains nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equation coverge to the entropy ones of the Burgers equation. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compansated compactness method in the L^p setting.
We consider the Rosenau equation, which contains nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equation converge to discontinuous weak solution of the Burgers equation. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compensated compactness method in the L^p setting.
We consider the Rosenau-Korteweg-de Vries-equation, which contains nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solution of the dispersive equation converge to the discontinous weak solutions of the Burgers equation. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of tha compansated compactness method in the L^p setting.
In this Letter we consider long capillary-gravity waves described by a fully nonlinear weakly dispersive model. First, using the phase space analysis methods we describe all possible types of localized travelling waves. Then, we especially focus on the critical regime, where the surface tension is exactly balanced by the gravity force. We show that our long wave model with a critical Bond number admits stable travelling wave solutions with a singular crest. These solutions are usually referred to in the literature as peakons or peaked solitary waves. They satisfy the usual speed-amplitude rela…
Water waves are well-known to be dispersive at the linearization level. Considering the fully nonlinear systems, we prove for reasonably smooth solutions the optimal Strichartz estimates for pure gravity waves and the semi-classical Strichartz estimates for gravity-capillary waves; for both 2D and 3D waves. Here, by optimal we mean the gains of regularity (over the Sobolev embedding from Sobolev spaces to Hölder spaces) obtained for the linearized systems. Our proofs combine the paradifferential reductions of Alazard-Burq-Zuily with a dispersive estimate using a localized wave package type par…
We consider in this article the system of gravity-capillary waves in all dimensions and under the Zakharov/Craig-Sulem formulation. Using a paradifferential approach introduced by Alazard-Burq-Zuily, we symmetrize this system into a quasilinear dispersive equation whose principal part is of order $3/2$. The main novelty, compared to earlier studies, is that this reduction is performed at the Sobolev regularity of quasilinear pdes: $H^s(R^d)$ with $s\textgreater{}3/2+d/2$, $d$ being the dimension of the free surface. From this reduction, we deduce a blow-up criterion involving solely the Lipsch…
In this note, we propose several unsolved problems concerning the irrotational oscillation of a water droplet under zero gravity. We will derive the governing equation of this physical model, and convert it to a quasilinear dispersive partial differential equation defined on the sphere, which formally resembles the capillary water waves equation but describes oscillation defined on curved manifold instead. Three types of unsolved mathematical problems related to this model will be discussed in observation of hydrodynamical experiments under zero gravity: (1) Strichartz type inequalities for th…
We consider in this paper modified fractional Korteweg-de Vries and related equations (modified Burgers-Hilbert and Whitham). They have the advantage with respect to the usual fractional KdV equation to have a defocusing case with a different dynamics. We will distinguish the weakly dispersive case where the phase velocity is unbounded for low frequencies and tends to zero at infinity and the strongly dispersive case where the phase velocity vanishes at the origin and goes to infinity at infinity. In the former case, the nonlinear hyperbolic effects dominate for large data, leading to the poss…
Since its elaboration by Whitham, almost fifty years ago, modulation theory has been known to be closely related to the stability of periodic traveling waves. However, it is only recently that this relationship has been elucidated, and that fully nonlinear results have been obtained. These only concern dissipative systems though: reaction-diffusion systems were first considered by Doelman, Sandstede, Scheel, and Schneider [Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 2009], and viscous systems of conservation laws have been addressed by Johnson, Noble, Rodrigues, and Zumbrun [preprint 2012]. Here, only nondissipativ…
In this paper we study the onset of angiogenesis and derive a new model to describe it. This new model takes the form of a nonlocal Burgers equation with both diffusive and dispersive terms. For a particular value of the parameters, the equation reduces to $$ \partial_t p-\frac{1}{2}(-Δ)^{(α-1)/2}H \partial_t p=-\frac{1}{2}(-Δ)^{α/2} p+ p\partial_x p-\partial_x p, $$ where $H$ denotes the Hilber transform. In addition to the derivation of the new model, we also prove a number of well-posedness results. Finally, some preliminary numerics are shown. These numerics suggest that the dynamics of th…
This article describes the use of algebraic methods in a phase plane analysis of ordinary differential equations. The method is illustrated by the study of capillary-gravity steady surface waves propagating in shallow water. We consider the (fully nonlinear, weakly dispersive) Serre-Green-Naghdi equations with surface tension, because it provides a tractable model that, in the same time, is not too simple so the interest of the method can be emphasised. In particular, we analyse a special class of solutions, the solitary waves, which play an important role in many fields of Physics. In capilla…
This paper studies the nonlinear stability of capillary-gravity waves propagating along the interface dividing two immiscible fluid layers of finite depth. The motion in both regions is governed by the incompressible and irrotational Euler equations, with the density of each fluid being constant but distinct. A diverse collection of small-amplitude solitary wave solutions for this system have been constructed by several authors in the case of strong surface tension (as measured by the Bond number) and slightly subcritical Froude number. We prove that all of these waves are (conditionally) orbi…
