We consider the initial value problem for the viscous Fornberg-Whitham equation which is one of the nonlinear and nonlocal dispersive-dissipative equations. In this paper, we establish the global existence of the solutions and study its asymptotic behavior. We show that the solution to this problem converges to the self-similar solution to the Burgers equation called the nonlinear diffusion wave, due to the dissipation effect by the viscosity term. Moreover, we analyze the optimal asymptotic rate to the nonlinear diffusion wave and the detailed structure of the solution by constructing higher-order asymptotic profiles. Also, we investigate how the nonlocal dispersion term affects the asymptotic behavior of the solutions and compare the results with the ones of the KdV-Burgers equation.
We consider the generalized Fornberg-Whitham equation. We study sufficient conditions for blow-up of solutions and show the global existence with small initial data. Also we give some relations to the Burgers equation.
We analyze the weak solution concept for the Fornberg-Whitham equation in case of traveling waves with a piecewise smooth profile function. The existence of discontinuous weak traveling wave solutions is shown by means of analysis of a corresponding planar dynamical system and appropriate patching of disconnected orbits.
Spatially periodic solutions of the Fornberg-Whitham equation are studied to illustrate the mechanism of wave breaking and the formation of shocks for a large class of initial data. We show that these solutions can be considered to be weak solutions satisfying the entropy condition. By numerical experiments, we show that the breaking waves become shock-wave type in the time evolution.
In this paper, the two-component Fornberg-Whitham system is studied. We firstly investigate the well-posedness in classical Sobolev Space and show a blow-up scenario by local-in-time a priori estimates, then we present some sufficient conditions on the initial data to lead to wave breaking. Furthermore, we establish analytically the existence of periodic travelling waves.
In this paper, we consider the Fornberg-Whitham equation and a family of solitary wave solutions is found by using minimization principle, where a related penalization function and the concentration-compactness lemma play a key role in our proof. Besides, we also prove that the family of solitary solutions is orbital stable and decay exponentially when speed wave c is bigger than 1.
In this paper, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the Fornberg-Whitham equation is not locally well-posed in $B^s_{p,r}(\R)$ with $(s,p,r)\in (1,1+\frac1p)\times[2,\infty)\times [1,\infty]$ or $(s,p,r)\in \{1\}\times[2,\infty)\times [1,2]$ by showing norm inflation phenomena of the solution for some special initial data.
Based on recent well-posedness results in Sobolev (or Besov spaces) for periodic solutions to the Fornberg-Whitham equations we investigate here the questions of wave breaking and blow-up for these solutions. We show first that finite maximal life time of a solution necessarily leads to wave breaking. Second, we prove that for a certain class of initial wave profiles the corresponding solutions do indeed blow-up in finite time.
We discuss concepts and review results about the Cauchy problem for the Fornberg-Whitham equation, which has also been called Burgers-Poisson equation in the literature. Our focus is on a comparison of various strong and weak solution concepts as well as on blow-up of strong solutions in the form of wave breaking. Along the way we add aspects regarding semiboundedness at blow-up, from semigroups of nonlinear operators to the Cauchy problem, and about continuous traveling waves as weak solutions.
This work studies a two-component Fornberg-Whitham (FW) system, which can be considered as a model for the propagation of shallow water waves. It's known that its solutions depend continuously on their initial data from the local well-posedness result. In this paper, we further show that such dependence is not uniformly continuous in $H^{s}(R)\times H^{s-1}(R)$ for $s>\frac{3}{2}$, but Höler continuous in a weaker topology. Besides, we also establish that the FW system is ill-posed in the critical Sobolev space $H^{\frac{3}{2}}(R)\times H^{\frac{1}{2}}(R)$ by proving the norm inflation.
In this paper, we prove well-posedness of the Fornberg-Whitham equation in Besov spaces $B_{2,r}^s$ in both the periodic and non-periodic cases. This will imply the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the aforementioned spaces along with the continuity of the data-to-solution map provided that the initial data belongs to $B_{2,r}^s $. We also establish sharpness of continuity on the data-to-solution map by showing that it is not uniformly continuous from any bounded subset of $B_{2,r}^s$ to $C([-T,T]; B^s_{2,r})$. Furthermore, we prove a Cauchy-Kowalevski type theorem for this equation th…
In this paper, we first establish the local well-posedness (existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence) for the Fornberg-Whitham equation in both supercritical Besov spaces $B^s_{p,r},\ s>1+\frac{1}{p},\ 1\leq p,r\leq+\infty$ and critical Besov spaces $B^{1+\frac{1}{p}}_{p,1},\ 1\leq p<+\infty$, which improves the previous work \cite{y2,ho,ht}. Then, we prove the solution is not uniformly continuous dependence on the initial data in supercritical Besov spaces $B^s_{p,r},\ s>1+\frac{1}{p},\ 1\leq p\leq+\infty,\ 1\leq r<+\infty$ and critical Besov spaces $B^{1+\frac{1}{p}}_{p,1},\ 1\leq p<+…
In this paper, we are interested in studying the modulational dynamics of interfacial waves rising buoyantly along a conduit of a viscous liquid. Formally, the behavior of modulated periodic waves on large space and time scales may be described through the use of Whitham modulation theory. The application of Whitham theory, however, is based on formal asymptotic (WKB) methods, thus removing a layer of rigor that would otherwise support their predictions. In this study, we aim at rigorously verifying the predictions of the Whitham theory, as it pertains to the modulational stability of periodic…
In this paper, we consider the explicit wave-breaking mechanism and its dynamical behavior near this singularity for the generalized b-equation. This generalized b-equation arises from the shallow water theory, which includes the Camassa-Holm equation, the Degasperis-Procesi equation, the Fornberg-Whitham equation, the Korteweg-de Vires equation and the classical b-equation. More precisely, we find that there exists an explicit self-similar blowup solution for the generalized b-equation. Meanwhile, this self-similar blowup solution is asymptotic stability in a parameters domain, but instabilit…
We establish nonlinear stability and asymptotic behavior of traveling periodic waves of viscous conservation laws under localized perturbations or nonlocalized perturbations asymptotic to constant shifts in phase, showing that long-time behavior is governed by an associated second-order formal Whitham modulation system. A key point is to identify the way in which initial perturbations translate to initial data for this formal system, a task accomplished by detailed estimates on the linearized solution operator about the background wave. Notably, our approach gives both a common theoretical tre…
We carry out a systematic analytical and numerical study of spectral stability of discontinuous roll wave solutions of the inviscid Saint Venant equations, based on a periodic Evans-Lopatinski determinant analogous to the periodic Evans function of Gardner in the (smooth) viscous case, obtaining a complete spectral stability diagram useful in hydraulic engineering and related applications. In particular, we obtain an explicit low-frequency stability boundary, which, moreover, matches closely with its (numerically-determined) counterpart in the viscous case. This is seen to be related to but no…
