We study viscous-dispersive shock waves with infinite oscillations of the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers (KdVB) equation. First, we establish detail structures of the shock waves, including the rates at which the local extrema converge to the left end state towards the left far field. Then, by exploiting the structural properties of the shocks, we show the $L^2$-contraction property of the shock profiles under arbitrarily large perturbations, up to time-dependent shifts. This property implies both time-asymptotic stability and uniform stability with respect to the viscosity and dispersion coefficients. This uniformity yields the existence of zero viscosity-dispersion limits, on which Riemann shocks are orbitally stable.
Spatially periodic complex-valued solutions of the Burgers and KdV-Burgers equations are studied in this paper. It is shown that for any sufficiently large time T, there exists an explicit initial data such that its corresponding solution of the Burgers equation blows up at T. In addition, the global convergence and regularity of series solutions is established for initial data satisfying mild conditions.
The stochastic PDE known as the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation (KPZ) has been proposed as a model for a randomly growing interface. This equation can be reformulated as a stochastic Burgers equation. We study a stochastic KdV-Burgers equation as a toy model for this stochastic Burgers equation. Both of these equations formally preserve spatial white noise. We are interested in rigorously proving the invariance of white noise for the stochastic KdV-Burgers equation. This paper establishes a result in this direction. After smoothing the additive noise (by less than one spatial derivative), we esta…
We are interested in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the Burgers, and the Whitham limit for a spatially periodic Boussinesq model with non-small contrast. We prove estimates between the KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham approximation and true solutions of the original system which guarantee that these amplitude equations make correct predictions about the dynamics of the spatially periodic Boussinesq model over the natural time scales of the amplitude equations. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis and energy estimates. The result is the first justification result of the KdV, the Burgers, an…
We prove that the KdV-Burgers is globally well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\T) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\T) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\T))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\T) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\T) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\T) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. In view of the result of Kappeler and Topalov for KdV it thus appears that even if the dissipation part of the KdV-Burgers equation allows to lower the $ C^\infty $ critical index with respect to the KdV equation, it does not permit to imp…
We complete the known results on the local Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces for the KdV-Burgers equation by proving that this equation is well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\R) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\R) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\R))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\R) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\R) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\R) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. As far as we know, this is the first result of this type for a dispersive-dissipative equation. The framework we develop here should be very us…
In this paper we are concerned with the well-posedness and the exponential stabilization of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries Burgers equation, posed on the whole real line, under the effect of a damping term. Both problems are investigated when the exponent p in the nonlinear term ranges over the interval $[1,5)$. We first prove the global well-posedness in $H^s(R)$, for $0 \leq s \leq 3$ and $1 \leq p < 2$, and in $H^3(R)$, when $p \geq 2$. For $2 \leq p < 5$, we prove the existence of global solutions in the $L^2$-setting. Then, by using multiplier techniques combined with interpolation the…
We provide a new analytical approach to operator splitting for equations of the type $u_t=Au+u u_x$ where $A$ is a linear differential operator such that the equation is well-posed. Particular examples include the viscous Burgers' equation, the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the Benney-Lin equation, and the Kawahara equation. We show that the Strang splitting method converges with the expected rate if the initial data are sufficiently regular. In particular, for the KdV equation we obtain second-order convergence in $H^r$ for initial data in $H^{r+5}$ with arbitrary $r\ge 1$.
Evaluation of analytical solutions of non-linear partial differential equations (both classical and fractional) is a rising subject in Applied Mathematics because its applications in Physical biological and social sciences. In this paper we have used generalized Tanh method to find the exact solution of KP-Burger equation and coupled KdV equation. The fractional Sub-equation method has been used to find the solution of fractional KP-Burger equation and fractional coupled KdV equations. The exact solution obtained by fractional sub-equation method reduces to classical solution when order of fra…
We consider the KdV-Burgers equation and its linear version in presence of a delay feedback. We prove well-posedness of the models and exponential decay estimates under appropriate conditions on the damping coefficients. Our arguments rely on a Lyapunov functional approach combined with a step by step procedure and semigroup theory.
We study generalized variants of the Burgers equation and the KdV equation on the circle. The main goal of the paper is to show that both extensions can be recast as geodesic equations on a suitable diffeomorphism group of the circle and the corresponding Bott-Virasoro group respectively. As a consequence we obtain that the initial value problem for the Burgers equation with an additional quadratic term is well-posed on a scale of Sobolev spaces on the circle.
We consider the long-time behavior of solutions to the fifth-order modified KdV-type equation. Using the method of testing by wave packets, we prove the small-data global existence and modified scattering. We derive the leading asymptotic in both the self-similar and oscillatory regions.
This work is concerned about the Cauchy problem for the following generalized KdV- Burgers equation \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{l} \partial_tu+\partial_x^3u+L_pu+u\partial_xu=0, u(0,\,x)=u_0(x). \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $L_p$ is a dissipative multiplicator operator. Using Besov-Bourgain Spaces, we establish a bilinear estimate and following the framework developed in Molinet, L. & Vento, S. (2011) we prove sharp global well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $H^{-p/2}(I\!\!R)$ and sharp ill-posedness in $H^s(I\!\!R)$ when $s<-p/2$ with $p \geq 2$.
In this article, we prove that small localized data yield solutions to Higher order Korteweg-de Vries type equation with scattering-supercritical nonlinearity have linear dispersive decay in only a finite length of time. The proof is done by using space-time resonance method and analyzing the oscillatory integrals on the Fourier side.
We consider a two-dimensional motion of a thin film flowing down an inclined plane under the influence of the gravity and the surface tension. In order to investigate the stability of such flow, we often use a thin film approximation, which is an approximation obtained by the perturbation expansion with respect to the aspect ratio of the film. The famous example of the approximate equations are the Burgers equation, Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, KdV--Burgers equation, KdV--Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, and so on. In this paper, we give a mathematically rigorous justification of a thin film…
Considering the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_t+u_{xxx}+ε|\partial_x|^{2α}u+(u^2)_x=0, \ u(0)=ϕ, \end{eqnarray*} where $0<ε,α\leq 1$ and $u$ is a real-valued function, we show that it is globally well-posed in $H^s\ (s>s_α)$, and uniformly globally well-posed in $H^s (s>-3/4)$ for all $ε\in (0,1)$. Moreover, we prove that for any $T>0$, its solution converges in $C([0,T]; H^s)$ to that of the KdV equation if $ε$ tends to 0.
We establish local well-posedness in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, with $s\geq -1/2$, for the initial value problem issues of the equation $$ u_t + u_{xxx}+ηLu + uu_x=0;\; x\in \mathbb{T},\; t\geq0, $$ where $η>0$, $(Lu)^{\wedge}(k)=-Φ(k)\hat{u}(k)$, $k\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $Φ\in \mathbb{R}$ is bounded above. Particular cases of this problem are the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation for $Φ(k)=-k^2$, the derivative Korteweg-de Vries-Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for $Φ(k)=k^2-k^4$, and the Ostrovsky-Stepanyams-Tsimring equation for $Φ(k)=|k|-|k|^3$.
In this paper, we consider the long wavelength limit for the quantum Euler-Poisson equation. Under the Gardner-Morikawa transform, we derive the quantum Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation by a singular perturbation method. We show that the KdV dynamics can be seen at time interval of order $O(ε^{-3/2})$. When the nondimensional quantum parameter $H=2$, it reduces to the inviscid Burgers equation.
Based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou for oscillatory Riemann--Hilbert problems and the Dbar approach, the long-time asymptotic behavior of solutions to the fifth-order modified Korteweg-de Vries equation on the line is studied in the case of initial conditions that belong to some weighted Sobolev spaces. Using techniques in Fourier analysis and the idea of $I$-method, we give its global well-posedness in lower regularity Sobolev spaces, and then obtain the asymptotic behavior in these spaces with weights.
We consider Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with kernels of homogeneity one of the form $K_{\varepsilon }(ξ,η) =\big( ξ^{1-\varepsilon }+η^{1-\varepsilon }\big)\big ( ξη\big) ^{\frac{\varepsilon }{2}}$. Heuristically, in suitable exponential variables, one can argue that in this case the long-time behaviour of solutions is similar to the inviscid Burgers equation and that for Riemann data solutions converge to a traveling wave for large times. Numerical simulations in \cite{HNV16} indeed support this conjecture, but also reveal that the traveling waves are oscillatory and the oscillations …
In this announcement we present a general and new approach to analyzing the asymptotics of oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems. Such problems arise, in particular, in evaluating the long-time behavior of nonlinear wave equations solvable by the inverse scattering method. We will restrict ourselves here exclusively to the modified Korteweg de Vries (MKdV) equation, $$y_t-6y^2y_x+y_{xxx}=0,\qquad -\infty<x<\infty,\ t\ge0, y(x,t=0)=y_0(x),$$ but it will be clear immediately to the reader with some experience in the field, that the method extends naturally and easily to the general class of wave …
The paper is concerned with the propagation of ion-acoustic shock waves in a collision dominated plasma. We firstly establish the existence and uniqueness of a small-amplitude smooth travelling wave, then justify its approximation to the shock profile of the KdV-Burgers equations in a suitable asymptotic regime where dissipation in terms of viscosity coefficient is much stronger than dispersion by the Debye length, and prove in the end the large time asymptotic stability of travelling waves under suitably small smooth perturbations.
We study the relevance of various scalar equations, such as inviscid Burgers', Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), extended KdV, and higher order equations (of Camassa-Holm type), as asymptotic models for the propagation of internal waves in a two-fluid system. These scalar evolution equations may be justified with two approaches. The first method consists in approximating the flow with two decoupled, counterpropagating waves, each one satisfying such an equation. One also recovers homologous equations when focusing on a given direction of propagation, and seeking unidirectional approximate solutions. Th…
We study the impact of the convective terms on the global solvability or finite time blow up of solutions of dissipative PDEs. We consider the model examples of 1D Burger's type equations, convective Cahn-Hilliard equation, generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and KdV type equations, we establish the following common scenario: adding sufficiently strong (in comparison with the destabilizing nonlinearity) convective terms to equation prevents the solutions from blowing up in finite time and makes the considered system globally well-posed and dissipative and for weak enough convective terms…
We prove that every solution of a KdV-Burgers-Sivashinsky type equation blows up in the energy space, backward in time, provided the solution does not belong to the global attractor. This is a phenomenon contrast to the backward behavior of the periodic 2D Navier-Stokes equations studied by Constantin-Foias-Kukavica-Majda [18], but analogous to the backward behavior of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation discovered by Kukavica-Malcok [50]. Also we study the backward behavior of solutions to the damped driven nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and the hypervisco…
In this paper we introduce a finite-parameters feedback control algorithm for stabilizing solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations, the strongly damped nonlinear wave equations and the nonlinear wave equation with nonlinear damping term, the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation and the KdV-Burgers equation. This algorithm capitalizes on the fact that such infinite-dimensional dissipative dynamical systems posses finite-dimensional long-time behavior which is represented by, for instance, the finitely many determining parameters of their long-time dynamics, such as determining Fourier mo…

We consider a class of dispersive and dissipative perturbations of the inviscid Burgers equation, which includes the fractional KdV equation of order $α$, and the fractal Burgers equation of order $β$, where $α, β\in [0,1)$, and the Whitham equation. For all $α, β\in [0,1)$, we construct solutions whose gradient blows up at a point, and whose amplitude stays bounded, which therefore display a "shock-like" singularity. We moreover provide an asymptotic description of the blow-up. To our knowledge, this constitutes the first proof of gradient blow-up for the fKdV equation in the range $α\in [2/3…
We consider in this paper modified fractional Korteweg-de Vries and related equations (modified Burgers-Hilbert and Whitham). They have the advantage with respect to the usual fractional KdV equation to have a defocusing case with a different dynamics. We will distinguish the weakly dispersive case where the phase velocity is unbounded for low frequencies and tends to zero at infinity and the strongly dispersive case where the phase velocity vanishes at the origin and goes to infinity at infinity. In the former case, the nonlinear hyperbolic effects dominate for large data, leading to the poss…
This work is devoted to the analysis of high frequency solutions to the equations of nonlinear elasticity in a half-space. We consider surface waves (or more precisely, Rayleigh waves) arising in the general class of isotropic hyperelastic models, which includes in particular the Saint Venant-Kirchhoff system. Work has been done by a number of authors since the 1980s on the formulation and well-posedness of a nonlinear evolution equation whose (exact) solution gives the leading term of an \emph{approximate} Rayleigh wave solution to the underlying elasticity equations. This evolution equation,…
