This paper is devoted to studying the Cauchy problem for the generalized Ostrovsky equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}-β\partial_{x}^{3}u-γ\partial_{x}^{-1}u+\frac{1}{k+1}(u^{k+1})_{x}=0,k\geq5 \end{eqnarray*} with $βγ<0,γ>0$. Firstly, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the generalized Ostrovsky equation is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbb{R})\left(s>\frac{1}{2}-\frac{2}{k}\right)$. Then, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the generalized Ostrovsky equation is locally well-posed in $X_{s}(\mathbb{R}): =\|f\|_{H^{s}}+\left\|\mathscr{F}_{x}^{-1}\left(\frac{\mathscr{F}_{x} f(ξ)}ξ\right)\right\|_{H^{s}}\left(s>\frac{1}{2}-\frac{2}{k}\right).$ Finally, we show that the solution to the Cauchy problem for generalized Ostrovsky equation converges to the solution to the generalized KdV equation as the rotation parameter $γ$ tends to zero for data belonging to $X_{s}(\mathbb{R})(s>\frac{3}{2})$. The main difficulty is that the phase function of Ostrosvky equation with negative dispersive $βξ^{3}+\fracγξ$ possesses the zero singular point.
This paper is devoted to studying the Cauchy problem for the Ostrovsky equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_{x}\left(u_{t}-β\partial_{x}^{3}u +\frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})\right) -γu=0, \end{eqnarray*} with positive $β$ and $γ$. This equation describes the propagation of surface waves in a rotating oceanic flow. We first prove that the problem is locally well-posed in $H^{-\frac{3}{4}}(\R)$. Then we reestablish the bilinear estimate, by means of the Strichartz estimates instead of calculus inequalities and Cauchy-Schwartz inequalities. As a byproduct, this bilinear estimate leads to the proof…
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the Ostrovsky equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_{x}\left(u_{t}-β\partial_{x}^{3}u +\frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})\right) -γu=0, \end{eqnarray*} in the Sobolev space $H^{-3/4}(\R)$. Here $β>0(<0)$ corresponds to the positive (negative) dispersion of the media, respectively. P. Isaza and J. Mej\'ıa (J. Diff. Eqns. 230(2006), 601-681; Nonli. Anal. 70(2009), 2306-2316), K. Tsugawa (J. Diff. Eqns. 247(2009), 3163-3180) proved that the problem is locally well-posed in $H^s(\R)$ when $s>-3/4$ and ill-posed when $s<-3/4$. By using some modified Bo…
We consider the initial-value problem for the regularized Boussinesq-Ostrovsky equation in the class of periodic functions. Validity of the weakly-nonlinear solution, given in terms of two counter-propagating waves satisfying the uncoupled Ostrovsky equations, is examined. We prove analytically and illustrate numerically that the improved accuracy of the solution can be achieved at the time scales of the Ostrovsky equation if solutions of the linearized Ostrovsky equations are incorporated into the asymptotic solution. Compared to the previous literature, we show that the approximation error c…
The Ostrovsky-Hunter equation provides a model for small-amplitude long waves in a rotating fluid of finite depth. It is a nonlinear evolution equation. In this paper we study the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to this equation in presence of some weak dissipation effects.
The Ostrovsky-Hunter equation provides a model for small-amplitude long waves in a rotating fluid of finite depth. It is a nonlinear evolution equation. In this paper we study the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to this equation within a class of bounded discontinuous solutions. We show that we can replace the Kruzkov-type entropy inequalities by an Oleinik-type estimate and prove uniqueness via a nonlocal adjoint problem. An implication is that a shock wave in an entropy weak solution to the Ostrovsky-Hunter equation is admissible only if it jumps down in value (like the invi…
The Ostrovsky--Hunter equation governs evolution of shallow water waves on a rotating fluid in the limit of small high-frequency dispersion. Sufficient conditions for the wave breaking in the Ostrovsky--Hunter equation are found both on an infinite line and in a periodic domain. Using the method of characteristics, we also specify the blow-up rate at which the waves break. Numerical illustrations of the finite-time wave breaking are given in a periodic domain.
We use a method developed by Strauss to obtain global wellposedness results in the mild sense for the small data Cauchy problem in modulation spaces $M_{p,q}^s(\mathbb{R}^d)$, where $q=1$ and $s\geq0$ or $q\in(1,\infty]$ and $s>\frac{d}{q'}$ for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with higher order anisotropic dispersion and algebraic nonlinearities.
In this paper we examine the well-posedness and ill-posedeness of the Cauchy problems associated to a family equations of ZK-KP-type \[ \begin{cases} u_{t}=u_{xxx}-\mathscr{H}D_{x}^αu_{yy}+uu_{x}, \cr u(0)=ψ\in Z \end{cases} \] in anisotropic Sobolev spaces, where $1\le α\le 1$, $\mathscr{H}$ is the Hilbert transform and $D_{x}^α$ is the fractional derivative, both with respect to $x$.
We establish well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to the dispersion generalized Zakharov-Kutnesov equation in the cylinder. Our main ingredient is a localized Strichartz estimate and an argument of compactness
We establish well-posedness conclusions for the Cauchy problem associated to the dispersion generalized Zakharov-Kutnesov equation in bi-periodic Sobolev spaces $H^{s}\left(\mathbb{T}^{2}\right)$, $s>(\frac{3}{2}-\frac{1}{2^{α+2}})(\frac{3}{2}-\fracβ{4})$.
It is shown that fifth-order nonlinear dispersion equations from compacton theory admit shock and rarefaction waves. A self-similar gradient blow-up is shown to admit infinitely many similarity extensions beyond blow-up time, meaning principal nonuniqueness of solutions of the Cauchy problem after occurring such singularities.
We consider the homogeneous integro-differential equation$\partial \_t u=J*u-u+f(u)$ with a monostable nonlinearity $f$. Our interest is twofold: we investigate the existence/non existence of travelling waves, and the propagation properties of the Cauchy problem. When the dispersion kernel $J$ is exponentially bounded, travelling waves are known to exist and solutions of the Cauchy problem typically propagate at a constant speed \cite{Schumacher1980}, \cite{Weinberger1982}, \cite{Carr2004}, \cite{Coville2007a}, \cite{Coville2008a}, \cite{Yagisita2009}. %When the dispersion kernel $J$ is exponen…
We consider the Cauchy problem associated to the fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger-Hartree equation with variable dispersion coefficients. The variable dispersion coefficients are assumed to be continuous or periodic and piecewise constant in time functions. We prove local and global well-posedness results for initial data in $H^s$-spaces. We also analyze the scaling limit of fast dispersion management and the convergence to a model with averaged dispersions.
We address the Cauchy problem for a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation where the dispersion is modulated by a deterministic noise. The noise is understood as the derivative of a self-affine function of order H $\in$ (0, 1). Due to the self-similarity of the noise, we obtain modified Strichartz estimates which enables us to prove the global well-posedness of the equation for L2-supercritical nonlinearities. This is an occurence of regularization by noise in a purely deterministic context.
We consider a general form of reaction-dispersion equations with non-local dispersal and local reaction. Under some general conditions, we prove the non-existence of transition fronts, as well as some stretching properties at large time for the solutions of the Cauchy problem. These conditions are satisfied in particular when the reaction is monostable and when the dispersal operator is either the fractional Laplacian, a convolution operator with a fat-tailed kernel or a nonlinear fast diffusion operator.
We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a modified spatial dispersion, given either by an homogeneous Fourier multiplier, or by a bounded Fourier multiplier. Arguments based on ordinary differential equations yield ill-posedness results which are sometimes sharp. When the Fourier multiplier is bounded, we infer that no Strichartz-type estimate improving on Sobolev embedding is available. Finally, we show that when the symbol is bounded, the Cauchy problem may be ill-posed in the case of critical regularity, with arbitrarily small initial data. The same is true when the symbol is ho…
We study a quantum Boltzmann-Condensation system that describes the evolution of the interaction between a well formed Bose-Einstein condensate and the quasi-particles cloud. The kinetic model is valid for a dilute regime at which the temperature of the gas is very low compared to the Bose-Einstein condensation critical temperature. In particular, our system couples the density of the condensate from a Gross-Pitaevskii type equation to the kinetic equation through the dispersion relation in the kinetic model and the corresponding transition probability rate from pre to post collision momentum …
We prove that the Cauchy problem for the dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equation \[\partial_t u+|\partial_x|^{1+α}\partial_x u+uu_x=0,\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),\] is locally well-posed in the Sobolev spaces $H^s$ for $s>1-α$ if $0\leq α\leq 1$. The new ingredient is that we develop the methods of Ionescu, Kenig and Tataru \cite{IKT} to approach the problem in a less perturbative way, in spite of the ill-posedness results of Molinet, Saut and Tzvetkovin \cite{MST}. Moreover, as a bi-product we prove that if $0<α\leq 1$ the corresponding modified equation (with the nonlinearity $\pm uuu_x$) is locall…
In this article we study the generalized dispersion version of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation, on $\T \times \R$ and $\T \times \R^2$. We start by proving bilinear Strichartz type estimates, dependent only on the dimension of the domain but not on the dispersion. Their analogues in terms of Bourgain spaces are then used as the main tool for the proof of bilinear estimates of the nonlinear terms of the equation and consequently of local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem.
In this paper we propose a new approach to prove the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem associated with strongly non resonant dispersive equations. As an example we obtain unconditional well-posedness of the Cauchy problem below $ H^1 $ for a large class of one-dimensional dispersive equations with a dispersion that is greater or equal to the one of the Benjamin-Ono equation. Since this is done without using a gauge transform, this enables us to prove strong convergence results for solutions of viscous versions of these equations towards the purely dispersive solutions.
We show the local in time well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation for initial data in the non-isotropic Sobolev space H^{s_1,s_2}(R^2) with s_1 > -1/2 and s_2 \geq 0. On the H^{s_1,0}(R^2) scale this result includes the full subcritical range without any additional low frequency assumption on the initial data. More generally, we prove the local in time well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a dispersion generalised KP II type equation. We also deduce a global well-posedness result for the generalised equation.
We consider the Cauchy problem for dispersion managed nonlinear Schroedinger equations, where the dispersion map is assumed to be periodic and piecewise constant in time. We establish local and global well-posedness results and the possibility of finite time blow-up. In addition, we shall study the scaling limit of fast dispersion management and establish convergence to an effective model with averaged dispersion.
We extend the local well-posedness theory for the Cauchy problem associated to a degenerated Zakharov system. The new main ingredients are the derivation of Strichartz and maximal function norm estimates for the linear solution of a Schrodinger type equation with missing dispersion in one direction. The result here improves the one in [11].
This paper deals with the Cauchy problem associated to the nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation with isotropic and anisotropic mixed dispersion. This model is given by the equation $i\partial _{t}u+εΔu+δA u+λ|u|^αu=0,$ $x\in \mathbb{R}^{n},$ $t\in \mathbb{R},$ where $A$ represents either the operator $Δ^2$ (isotropic dispersion) or $\sum_{i=1}^d\partial_{x_ix_ix_ix_i},\ 1\leq d<n$ (anisotropic dispersion), and $α, ε, λ$ are given real parameters. We obtain local and global well-posedness results in spaces of initial data with low regularity, such as weak-$L^p$ spaces. Our analysis also …
Singular degenerate differential operator equations are studied. The uniform separability of boundary value problems for degenerate elliptic equation and optimal regularity properties of Cauchy problem for degenerate parabolic equation are obtained. These problems have a numeros applications which occur in fluid mechanics, environmental engineering and atmospheric dispersion of pollutants.
The aim of this article is to describe asymptotic profiles for the Kirchhoff equation, and to establish time decay properties and dispersive estimates for Kirchhoff equations. For this purpose, the method of asymptotic integration is developed for the corresponding linear equations and representation formulae for their solutions are obtained. These formulae are analysed further to obtain the time decay rate of $L^p$--$L^q$ norms of propagators for the corresponding Cauchy problems.
In this paper, we study a class of nonlocal dispersion equation with monostable nonlinearity in $n$-dimensional space u_t - J\ast u +u+d(u(t,x))= \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} f_β(y) b(u(t-τ,x-y)) dy, u(s,x)=u_0(s,x), s\in[-τ,0], \ x\in \mathbb{R}^n} \] where the nonlinear functions $d(u)$ and $b(u)$ possess the monostable characters like Fisher-KPP type, $f_β(x)$ is the heat kernel, and the kernel $J(x)$ satisfies ${\hat J}(ξ)=1-\mathcal{K}|ξ|^α+o(|ξ|^α)$ for $0<α\le 2$. After establishing the existence for both the planar traveling waves $ϕ(x\cdot{\bf e}+ct)$ for $c\ge c_*$ ($c_*$ is the critical wave…
This study deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general class of nonlocal nonlinear equations modeling the bi-directional propagation of dispersive waves in various contexts. The nonlocal nature of the problem is reflected by two different elliptic pseudodifferential operators acting on linear and nonlinear functions of the dependent variable, respectively. The well-known doubly dispersive nonlinear wave equation that incorporates two types of dispersive effects originated from two different dispersion operators falls into the category studied here. The class of nonlocal nonlinea…
We show that the Cauchy problem for a class of dispersive perturbations of Burgers' equations containing the low dispersion Benjamin-Ono equation $\partial$\_t u -- D^$α$\_x $\partial$\_x u = $\partial$\_x(u^2), 0 < $α$ $\le$ 1, is locally well-posed in H^s (R) when s > 3 /2 -- 5$α$ /4. As a consequence, we obtain global well-posedness in the energy space H^{$α$/2} (R) as soon as $α$ > 6/7 .
In $L_2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, we consider an elliptic differential operator $\mathcal{A}_\varepsilon = - \operatorname{div} g(\mathbf{x}/\varepsilon) \nabla + \varepsilon^{-2} V(\mathbf{x}/\varepsilon)$, $ \varepsilon > 0$, with periodic coefficients. For the nonstationary Schrödinger equation with the Hamiltonian $\mathcal{A}_\varepsilon$, analogs of homogenization problems related to an arbitrary point of the dispersion relation of the operator $\mathcal{A}_1$ are studied (the so called high-energy homogenization). For the solutions of the Cauchy problems for these equations with special initial d…
Global Existence and Vanishing Dispersion Limit of Strong/Classical Solutions to the One-dimensional Compressible Quantum Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Initial Data
We obtain an asymptotic expansion for the solution of the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in the small dispersion limit near the point of gradient catastrophe (x_c,t_c) for the solution of the dispersionless equation. The sub-leading term in this expansion is described by the smooth solution of a fourth order ODE, which is a higher order analogue to the Painleve I equation. This is in accordance with a conjecture of Dubrovin, suggesting that this is a universal phenomenon for any Hamiltonian perturbation of a hyperbolic equation. Using the Deift/Zhou steepest descent me…
The aim of this paper is to establish time decay properties and dispersive estimates for strictly hyperbolic equations with homogeneous symbols and with time-dependent coefficients whose derivatives are integrable. For this purpose, the method of asymptotic integration is developed for such equations and representation formulae for solutions are obtained. These formulae are analysed further to obtain time decay of Lp-Lq norms of propagators for the corresponding Cauchy problems. It turns out that the decay rates can be expressed in terms of certain geometric indices of the limiting equation an…
We consider the exterior Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for equivariant wave maps from 3+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime into the three-sphere. Using mixed analytical and numerical methods we show that, for a given topological degree of the map, all solutions starting from smooth finite energy initial data converge to the unique static solution (harmonic map). The asymptotics of this relaxation process is described in detail. We hope that our model will provide an attractive mathematical setting for gaining insight into dissipation-by-dispersion phenomena, in particular the soliton resolution conj…
We study the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy in the small dispersion limit where $\e\to 0$. For negative analytic initial data with a single negative hump, we prove that for small times, the solution is approximated by the solution to the hyperbolic transport equation which corresponds to $\e=0$. Near the time of gradient catastrophe for the transport equation, we show that the solution to the KdV hierarchy is approximated by a particular Painlevé transcendent. This supports Dubrovins universality conjecture concerning the critical behavior of Hamiltonian perturbations…
The generalized fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (gfBBM) equation models the propagation of small amplitude long unidirectional waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. The equation involves two fractional terms unlike the well-known fBBM equation. In this paper, we prove local existence and uniqueness of the solutions for the Cauchy problem. The sufficient conditions for the existence of solitary wave solutions are obtained. The Petviashvili method is proposed for the generation of the solitary wave solutions and their evolution in time is investigated numerically by Fourier spect…
