The aim of this paper is to study certain properties of the weight spectral sequences of Rapoport-Zink by a specialization argument. By reducing to the case over finite fields previously treated by Deligne, we prove that the weight filtration and the monodromy filtration defined on the $l$-adic étale cohomology coincide, up to shift, for proper smooth varieties over equal characteristic local fields. We also prove that the weight spectral sequences degenerate at $E_2$ in any characteristic without using log geometry. Moreover, as an application, we give a modulo $p>0$ reduction proof of a Hodge analogue previously considered by Steenbrink.
Deligne's weight-monodromy conjecture gives control over the poles of local factors of L-functions of varieties at places of bad reduction. His proof in characteristic p was a step in his proof of the generalized Weil conjectures. Scholze developed the theory of perfectoid spaces to transfer Deligne's proof to characteristic 0, proving the conjecture for complete intersections in toric varieties. Building on Scholze's techniques, we prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for complete intersections in abelian varieties.
We prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for varieties which are p-adically uniformized by a product of the Drinfeld upper half spaces. It is an easy consequence of Dat's work on the cohomology complex of the Drinfeld upper half space.
We formulate and study a torsion analogue of the weight-monodromy conjecture for a proper smooth scheme over a non-archimedean local field. We prove it for proper smooth schemes over equal characteristic non-archimedean local fields, abelian varieties, surfaces, varieties uniformized by Drinfeld upper half spaces, and set-theoretic complete intersections in toric varieties. In the equal characteristic case, our methods rely on an ultraproduct variant of Weil II established by Cadoret.
The aim of this paper is to prove the weight-monodromy conjecture (Deligne's conjecture on the purity of monodromy filtration) for varieties p-adically uniformized by the Drinfeld upper half spaces of any dimension. The ingredients of the proof are to prove a special case of the Hodge standard conjecture, and apply a positivity argument of Steenbrink, M. Saito to the weight spectral sequence of Rapoport-Zink. As an application, by combining our results with the results of Schneider-Stuhler, we compute the local zeta functions of p-adically uniformized varieties in terms of representation theor…
The weight-monodromy conjecture claims the coincidence of the weight filtration and the monodromy filtration, up to shift, on the $l$-adic étale cohomology of a proper smooth variety over a complete discrete valuation field. Although it has been proved in some cases, the case of dimension $\geq 3$ in mixed characteristic is still open so far. The aim of this paper is to give a proof of the weight-monodromy conjecture for a threefold which has a projective strictly semistable model such that, for each irreducible component of the special fiber, the Picard number is equal to the second $l$-adic …
The Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture is an analogue of the Hasse Principle for differential equations. It states that a set of arithmetic differential equations on a variety has finite monodromy if its $p$-curvature vanishes modulo $p$, for almost all primes $p$. We prove that if the variety is a generic curve, then every simple closed loop on the curve has finite monodromy.
We show that complex local systems with quasi-unipotent monodromy at infinity over a normal complex variety are Zariski dense in their moduli. v2: we waited for feedback and added a consequence of Alexandr Petrov's theorem. 3: we tightened the last section. Final version: appears in Israel Journal of Mathematics. footnote added to Conjecture 1.1: Aaron Landesman and Daniel Litt just made available a preprint showing that there is a lower bound for the rank of geometric local systems with infinite mon-odromy on certain curves, and consequently the conjecture can not be true in this generality.
We investigate an analogue of the Grothendieck $p$-curvature conjecture, where the vanishing of the $p$-curvature is replaced by the stronger condition, that the module with connection mod $p$ underlies a $\mathcal{D}_X$-module structure. We show that this weaker conjecture holds in various situations, for example if the underlying vector bundle is finite in the sense of Nori, or if the connection underlies a $\mathbb{Z}$-variation of Hodge structure. We also show isotriviality assuming a coprimality condition on certain mod $p$ Tannakian fundmental groups, which in particular resolves in the …
The holomorphy conjecture states roughly that Igusa's zeta function associated to a hypersurface and a character is holomorphic on $\mathbb{C}$ whenever the order of the character does not divide the order of any eigenvalue of the local monodromy of the hypersurface. In this article we prove the holomorphy conjecture for surface singularities which are nondegenerate over $\mathbb{C}$ with respect to their Newton polyhedron. In order to provide relevant eigenvalues of monodromy, we first show a relation between the normalized volume (which appears in the formula of Varchenko for the zeta functi…
For a given arithmetic scheme, in this paper we will introduce and discuss the monodromy action on a universal cover of the étale fundamental group and the monodromy action on an \emph{sp}-completion constructed by the graph functor, respectively; then by these results we will give a proof of the section conjecture of Grothendieck for arithmetic schemes.
The integral monodromy on the Milnor lattice of an isolated quasihomogeneous singularity is subject of an almost untouched conjecture of Orlik from 1972. We prove this conjecture for all iterated Thom-Sebastiani sums of chain type singularities and cycle type singularities. The main part of the paper is purely algebraic. It provides tools for dealing with sums and tensor products of ${\mathbb Z}$-lattices with automorphisms of finite order and with cyclic generators. The calculations are involved. They use fine properties of unit roots, cyclotomic polynomials, their resultants and discriminant…
We study l-independence of monodromy groups G_l of any compatible system of l-adic representations (in the sense of Serre) of number field K assuming semisimplicity. We prove that the formal character of the derived group of the identity component of G_l is independent of l and the (complexified) Lie algebra g_l of G_l satisfies an equal-rank subalgebra equivalence for all l. This equivalence is equivalent to the l-independence of the number of A_n factors for all n belonging to {6,9,10,11,...} and the parity of A_4 factors in g_l.
The Grothendieck--Katz $p$-curvature conjecture predicts that an arithmetic differential equation whose reduction modulo $p$ has vanishing $p$-curvatures for {\em almost all} $p,$ has finite monodromy. It is known that it suffices to prove the conjecture for differential equations on $\mathbb{P}^{1}-\{0,1,\infty\}.$ We prove a variant of this conjecture for $\mathbb{P}^{1}-\{0,1,\infty\},$ which asserts that if the equation satisfies a certain convergence condition for {\em all} $p,$ then its monodromy is trivial. For those $p$ for which the $p$-curvature makes sense, its vanishing implies our…
This paper completes the proof of the Ramanujan Conjecture for holomorphic Hilbert modular forms whose weights are all congruent modulo 2. As a consequence, the Weight-Monodromy Conjecture and the zeta function conjecture of Langlands are verified for all Quaternionic Shimura varieties.
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
The main objective of this paper is to prove the monodromy conjecture for the local Igusa zeta function of a quasi-ordinary polynomial of arbitrary dimension defined over a number field. In order to do it, we compute the local Denef-Loeser motivic zeta function $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)$ of a quasi-ordinary power series $h$ of arbitrary dimension over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero from its characteristic exponents without using embedded resolution of singularities. This allows us to effectively represent $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)=P(T)/Q(T)$ such that almost all the candidate poles g…
Let X be a smooth, geometrically connected variety over a p-adic local field. We show that the pro-unipotent fundamental group of X (in both the etale and crystalline settings) satisfies the weight-monodromy conjecture, following Vologodsky. We deduce (in the etale setting) that Frobenii act semisimply on the Lie algebra of the pro-unipotent fundamental group of X, and (in the crystalline setting) that the same is true for a K-linear power of the crystalline Frobenius. We give applications to the representability and geometry of the Selmer varieties appearing in the Chabauty-Kim program, even …
In this paper, we prove Dahmen and Beukers' conjecture that the number of integral Lamé equations with index $n$ modulo scalar equivalence with the monodromy group dihedral $D_{N}$ of order $2N$ is given by \[L_{n}(N)=\frac{1}{2}\left( \frac{n(n+1)Ψ(N)}{24}-\left( a_{n}% ϕ(N)+b_{n}ϕ(\tfrac{N}{2}) \right) \right) +\frac{2}% {3}\varepsilon_{n}(N).\] Our main tool is the new pre-modular form $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(τ)$ of weight $n(n+1)/2$ introduced by Lin and Wang \cite{LW2} and the associated modular form $M_{n,N}(τ):=\prod_{(r,s)}Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(τ)$ of weight $Ψ(N)n(n+1)/{2}$, where the product runs ove…
A conjecture of Kato says that the monodromy operator on the cohomology of a semi-stable degeneration of projective varieties is represented by an algebraic cycle on the special fiber of a normal crossing model of the fiber product degeneration. We prove this conjecture in the simple case of a semi-stable degeneration arising from a Lefschetz fibration.
Given a complex quasiprojective curve $B$ and a non-isotrivial family $\mathcal{E}$ of elliptic curves over $B$, the $p$-torsion $\mathcal{E}[p]$ yields a monodromy representation $ρ_\mathcal{E}[p]:π_1(B)\rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$. We prove that if $ρ_{\mathcal E}[p]\cong ρ_{\mathcal E'}[p]$ then $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal E'$ are isogenous, provided $p$ is larger than a constant depending only on the gonality of $B$. This can be viewed as a function field analog of the Frey--Mazur conjecture, which states that an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ is determined up to isogeny by i…
Let X be a smooth curve over a finite field of characteristic p, let E be a number field, and consider an E-compatible system of lisse sheaves on the curve X. For each place lambda of E not lying over p, the lambda-component of the system is a lisse E_lambda-sheaf on X, whose associated arithmetic monodromy group is an algebraic group over the local field E_lambda. We use Serre's theory of Frobenius tori and Lafforgue's proof of Deligne's conjecture to show that when the E-compatible system is semisimple and pure of some integer weight, the isomorphism type of the identity component of these m…
Using the sieve for Frobenius, we show that, in a certain sense, the roots of the L-functions of "most" algebraic curves over finite fields do not satisfy any non-trivial (linear or multiplicative) rational dependency relations. This can be seen as an analogue of conjectures of linear independence among ordinates of zeros of L-functions over number fields. As a corollary, we find, for "most" pairs of distinct algebraic curves over a finite field, the limiting distribution of the (suitably normalized) difference between the number of rational points over extensions of the ground field. The meth…
Let f be a modular eigenform of even weight k>0 and new at a prime p dividing exactly the level, with respect to an indefinite quaternion algebra. The theory of Fontaine-Mazur allows to attach to f a monodromy module D_FM(f) and an L-invariant L_FM(f). The first goal of this paper is building a suitable p-adic integration theory that allows us to construct a monodromy module D(f) and an L-invariant L(f) in the spirit of Darmon. We conjecture both monodromy modules are isomorphic, and in particular the two L-invariants are equal. For the second goal of this note we assume the conjecture is true…
We study Diophantine equations of type f(x)=g(y), where both f and g have at least two distinct critical points and equal critical values at at most two distinct critical points. Some classical families of polynomials (f_n)_n are such that f_n satisfies these assumptions for all n. Our results cover and generalize several results in the literature on the finiteness of integral solutions to such equations. In doing so, we analyse the properties of the monodromy groups of such polynomials. We show that if f has coefficients in a field K, at least two distinct critical points and all distinct cri…
Let $X_0$ be a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ and let $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ be an irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X_0$. We show that if a subobject of minimal slope of the associated convergent $F$-isocrystal $\mathcal E_0$ admits a non-zero morphism to $\mathcal O_{X_0}$ as a convergent isocrystal, then $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal O^{\dagger}_{X_0}$ as an overconvergent isocrystal. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Kedlaya. The key ingredient in the proof is the study of the monodromy group …
The Tate conjecture has two parts: i) Tate classes are linear combination of algebraic classes, ii) semisimplicity of Galois representations (for smooth projective varieties). B. Moonen proved that i) implies ii) in characteristic 0, using $p$-adic Hodge theory. We show that an unconditional result lies behind this implication: the {\it observability} of arithmetic monodromy groups of geometric origin (in any characteristic) - which leads to a sharpening of Moonen's result. We also discuss another aspect of the Tate conjecture related to the transcendence of $p$-adic periods.
We study monodromy action on abelian varieties satisfying certain bad reduction conditions. These conditions allow us to get some control over the Galois image. As a consequence we verify the Mumford--Tate conjecture for such abelian varieties.
Let $X$ be a connected scheme, smooth and separated over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p\geq 0$, let $f:Y\rightarrow X$ be a smooth proper morphism and $x$ a geometric point on $X$. We prove that the tensor invariants of bounded length $\leq d$ of $π_1(X,x)$ acting on the étale cohomology groups $H^*(Y_x,F_\ell)$ are the reduction modulo-$\ell$ of those of $π_1(X,x)$ acting on $H^*(Y_x,Z_\ell)$ for $\ell$ greater than a constant depending only on $f:Y\rightarrow X$, $d$. We apply this result to show that the geometric variant with $F_\ell$-coefficients of the Grothendiec…
Let $E$ be an abelian scheme over a geometrically connected variety $X$ defined over $k$, a finitely generated field over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $η$ be the generic point of $X$ and $x\in X$ a closed point. If $\mathfrak{g}_l$ and $(\mathfrak{g}_l)_x$ are the Lie algebras of the $l$-adic Galois representations for abelian varieties $E_η$ and $E_x$, then $(\mathfrak{g}_l)_x$ is embedded in $\mathfrak{g}_l$ by specialization. We prove that the set $\{x\in X$ closed point $| (\mathfrak{g}_l)_x\subsetneq \mathfrak{g}_l\}$ is independent of $l$ and confirm Conjecture 5.5 in [2].
In this paper we prove the Geyer-Jarden conjecture on the torsion part of the Mordell-Weil group for a large class of abelian varieties defined over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. The class consists of all abelian varieties with big monodromy, i.e., such that the image of Galois representation on l-torsion points, for almost all primes l, contains the full symplectic group.
Let $E$ be a number field and $X$ a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a characteristic $p$ finite field. Given an $n$-dimensional pure $E$-compatible system of semisimple $λ$-adic representations of the étale fundamental group of $X$ with connected algebraic monodromy groups $G_λ$, we construct a common $E$-form $G$ of all the groups $G_λ$ and in the absolutely irreducible case, a common $E$-form $G\hookrightarrow\text{GL}_{n,E}$ of all the tautological representations $G_λ\hookrightarrow\text{GL}_{n,E_λ}$ (Theorem 1.1). Analogous rationality results in characteristic $p$ ass…
In this paper we develop a general method to prove independence of algebraic monodromy groups in compatible systems of representations, and we apply it to deduce independence results for compatible systems both in automorphic and in positive characteristic settings. In the abstract case, we prove an independence result for compatible systems of Lie-irreducible representations, from which we deduce an independence result for compatible systems admitting what we call a Lie-irreducible decomposition. In the case of geometric compatible systems of Galois representations arising from certain classe…
The spectral problem of three-dimensional manifolds M_A admitting Sol-geometry in Thurston's sense is investigated. Topologically M_A are torus bundles over a circle with a unimodular hyperbolic gluing map A. The eigenfunctions of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operators are described in terms of the modified Mathieu functions. It is shown that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues are the same for generic values of the parameters in the metric and are directly related to the number of representations of an integer by a given indefinite binary quadratic form. As a result the spectral stati…
