This paper completes the proof of the Ramanujan Conjecture for holomorphic Hilbert modular forms whose weights are all congruent modulo 2. As a consequence, the Weight-Monodromy Conjecture and the zeta function conjecture of Langlands are verified for all Quaternionic Shimura varieties.
We determine conditions for the existence and non-existence of Ramanujan-type congruences for Jacobi forms. We extend these results to Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and as an application, we establish Ramanujan-type congruences for explicit examples of Siegel modular forms.
We survey divisibility properties of the Fourier coefficients of modular functions inspired by Ramanujan. Then using recent results of the generalized Hecke operator on harmonic Maass functions and known divisibility of Fourier coefficients of modular functions, we establish congruence relations of the Fourier coefficients of certain modular functions and mock modular functions of various levles.
We prove that the ancestor Gromov-Witten correlation functions of one-dimensional compact Calabi-Yau orbifolds are quasi-modular forms. This includes the pillowcase orbifold which can not yet be handled by using Milanov-Ruan's B-model technique. We first show that genus zero modularity is obtained from the phenomenon that the system of WDVV equations is essentially equivalent to the set of Ramanujan identities satisfied by the generators of the ring of quasi-modular forms for a certain modular group associated to the orbifold curve. Higher genus modularity then follows by using tautological re…
The study of Fourier coefficients of meromorphic modular forms dates back to Ramanujan, who, together with Hardy, studied the reciprocal of the weight 6 Eisenstein series. Ramanujan conjectured a number of further identities for other meromorphic modular forms and quasi-modular forms which were subsequently established by Berndt, Bialek, and Yee. In this paper, we place these identities into the context of a larger family by making use of Poincaré series introduced by Petersson and a new family of Poincaré series which we construct here and which are of independent interest. In addition we est…
Motivated by work of Chan, Chan, and Liu, we obtain a new general theorem which produces Ramanujan-Sato series for $1/π$. We then use it to construct explicit examples related to non-compact arithmetic triangle groups, as classified by Takeuchi. Some of our examples are new, and some reproduce existing examples.
We give congruences between the Eisenstein series and a cusp form in the cases of Siegel modular forms and Hermitian modular forms. We should emphasize that there is a relation between the existence of a prime dividing the $k-1$-th generalized Bernoulli number and the existence of non-trivial Hermitian cusp forms of weight $k$. We will conclude by giving numerical examples for each case.
The modular transformations of Ramanujan's tenth order mock theta functions are computed, beginning from Choi's Hecke-type identites and using Zwegers' results on indefinite theta series. Explicit completions and shadows are found as an intermediate step. Our result for the modular transformations confirms numerical work by Gordon and McIntosh, and a recent conjecture by Cheng, Duncan, and Harvey.
Ramanujan famously found congruences for the partition function like p(5n+4) = 0 modulo 5. We provide a method to find all simple congruences of this type in the coefficients of the inverse of a modular form on Gamma_{1}(4) which is non-vanishing on the upper half plane. This is applied to answer open questions about the (non)-existence of congruences in the generating functions for overpartitions, crank differences, and 2-colored F-partitions.
In [4] and [5], Folsom presents a family of modular units as higher-level analogues of the Rogers-Ramanujan $q$-continued fraction. These units are constructed from analytic solutions to the higher-order $q$-recurrence equations of Selberg. Here, we consider another family of modular units, which are quotients of Hall-Littlewood $q$-series that appear in the generalized Rogers-Ramanujan type identities of [6]. In analogy with the results of Folsom, we provide a formula for the rank of the subgroup these units generate and show that their specializations at the cusp $0$ generate a subgroup of t…
We study the quotient of hypergeometric functions \begin{equation*} μ_{a}^*(r)=\fracπ{2\sin{(πa)}}\frac{F(a,1-a;1;1-r^3)}{F(a,1-a;1;r^3)} \quad (r\in(0,1)) \end{equation*} in the theory of Ramanujan's generalized modular equation for $a\in(0,1/2]$, find an infinite product formula for $μ_{1/3}^*(r)$ by use of the properties of $μ_{a}^*(r)$ and Ramanujan's cubic transformation. Besides, a new cubic transformation formula of hypergeometric function is given, which complements the Ramanujan's cubic transformation.
In this paper, we investigate Fourier expansions of meromorphic modular forms. Over the years, a number of special cases of meromorphic modular forms were shown to have Fourier expansions closely resembling the expansion of the reciprocal of the weight $6$ Eisenstein series which was computed by Hardy and Ramanujan. By investigating meromorphic modular forms within a larger space of so-called polar harmonic Maass forms, we prove in this paper that all negative-weight meromorphic modular forms (and furthermore all quasi-meromorpic modular forms) have Fourier expansions of this type, granted tha…
Let $k$ be a positive integer. In this paper, using the modular approach, we prove that if $k\equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, $30< k<724$ and $2k-1$ is an odd prime power, then under the GRH, the equation $x^2+(2k-1)^y=k^z$ has only one positive integer solution $(x,y,z)=(k-1,1,2)$. The above results solve some difficult cases of Terai's conecture concerning this equation.
We prove that Ramanujan-type congruences for integral weight modular forms away from the level and the congruence prime are equivalent to specific congruences for Hecke eigenvalues. In particular, we show that Ramanujan-type congruences are preserved by the action of the shallow Hecke algebra. More generally, we show for weakly holomorphic modular forms of integral weight, that Ramanujan-type congruences naturally occur for shifts in the union of two square-classes as opposed to single square-classes that appear in the literature on the partition function. We also rule out the possibility of s…
At scattered places of his notebooks, Ramanujan recorded over 30 values of singular moduli $α_n$. All those results were proved by Berndt et. al by employing Weber-Ramanujan's class invariants. In this paper, we initiate to derive the explicit evaluations formula for $α_{9n}$ and $α_{n/9}$ by involving class invariant. For this purpose, we establish several new $P-Q$ mixed modular equations involving theta-functions. Further application of these modular equations, we derive a new formula to explicit evaluation of Ramanujan- Selberg continued fraction.
We analyze the mock modular behavior of $\bar{P}_ω(q)$, a partition function introduced by Andrews, Dixit, Schultz, and Yee. This function arose in a study of smallest parts functions related to classical third order mock theta functions, one of which is $ω(q)$. We find that the modular completion of $\bar{P}_ω(q)$ is not simply a harmonic Maass form, but is instead the derivative of a linear combination of products of various harmonic Maass forms and theta functions. We precisely describe its behavior under modular transformations and find that the image under the Maass lowering operator lies…
Using results from Ramanujan's lost notebook, Zudilin recently gave an insightful proof of a radial limit result of Folsom, Ono, and Rhoades for mock theta functions. Here we see that the author's previous work on the dual nature of Appell--Lerch sums and partial theta functions and on constructing bilateral $q$-series with mixed mock modular behaviour is well-suited for such radial limits. We present five more radial limit results which follow from mixed mock modular bilateral $q$-hypergeometric series. We also obtain the mixed mock modular bilateral series for a universal mock theta function…
We solve a long-standing open problem with its own long history dating back to the celebrated works of Klein and Ramanujan. This problem concerns the invariant decomposition formulas of the Hauptmodul for $Γ_0(p)$ under the action of finite simple groups $PSL(2, p)$ with $p=5, 7, 13$. The cases of $p=5$ and $7$ were solved by Klein and Ramanujan. Little was known about this problem for $p=13$. Using our invariant theory for $PSL(2, 13)$, we solve this problem. This leads to a new expression of the classical elliptic modular function of Klein: $j$-function in terms of theta constants associated…
We compute the minimal polynomials of the Ramanujan values $t_n$, where $n\equiv 11 \mod 24$, using Shimura reciprocity law. These polynomials can be used for defining the Hilbert class field of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-n})$, and have much smaller coefficients than the Hilbert polynomials.
We prove congruences between cuspidal newforms and Eisenstein series of prime level, which generalize Ramanujan's congruence. Such congruences were recently found by Billerey and Menares, and we refine them by specifying the Atkin-Lehner eigenvalue of the newform involved. We show that similar refinements hold for the level raising congruences between cuspidal newforms of different levels, due to Ribet and Diamond. The proof relies on studying the new subspace and the Eisenstein subspace of the space of period polynomials for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$, and on a version of Ihara's lemma.
Two level 17 modular functions $$ r=q^{2}\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}(1-q^{n})^{\left(\frac{n}{17}\right)},\quad s=q^{2}\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{(1-q^{17n})^{3}}{(1-q^{n})^{3}}, $$ are used to construct a new class of Ramanujan-Sato series for $1/π$. The expansions are induced by modular identities similar to those level of 5 and 13 appearing in Ramanujan's Notebooks. A complete list of rational and quadratic series corresponding to singular values of the parameters is derived.
If $f(z)$ is a modular form of weight $k$, then the differential operator $\vartheta_k$ defined by $\vartheta_k(f) = \frac{1}{2πi} \frac{d}{dz}f(z) - \frac{k}{12} E_2(z) f(z)$ (known as the Ramanujan-Serre derivative map) is a modular form of weight $k+2$. In this paper, we obtain a simple extension of this map and use it to get a general method to derive certain convolution sums of the divisor functions (using the theory of modular forms). Explicit expressions are given for four types of convolution sums and we provide many examples for all these types of sums.
In his second notebook, Ramanujan recorded total of 23 P-Q modular equations involving theta-functions $f(-q)$, $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$. In this paper, modular equations analogous to those recorded by Ramanujan are obtained involving $f(-q)$. As a consequence, values of certain quotients of theta-function are evaluated.
This paper is concerned with a class of partition functions $a(n)$ introduced by Radu and defined in terms of eta-quotients. By utilizing the transformation laws of Newman, Schoeneberg and Robins, and Radu's algorithms, we present an algorithm to find Ramanujan-type identities for $a(mn+t)$. While this algorithm is not guaranteed to succeed, it applies to many cases. For example, we deduce a witness identity for $p(11n+6)$ with integer coefficients. Our algorithm also leads to Ramanujan-type identities for the overpartition functions $\overline{p}(5n+2)$ and $\overline{p}(5n+3)$ and Andrews--P…
In a well-known 1914 paper, Ramanujan gave a number of rapidly converging series for $1/π$ which are derived using modular functions of higher level. D. V. and G. V. Chudnovsky in their 1988 paper derived an analogous series representing $1/π$ using the modular function $J$ of level 1, which results in highly convergent series for $1/π$, often used in practice. In this paper, we explain the Chudnovsky method in the context of elliptic curves, modular curves, and the Picard-Fuchs differential equation. In doing so, we also generalize their method to produce formulae which are valid around any s…
In this paper we want to prove some formulas listed by S. Ramanujan in his paper "Modular equations and approximations to $π$" \cite{24} with an elementary method.
We make a summary of the different types of proofs adding some new ideas. In addition we conjecture some relations which could be necessary in "modular type proofs" (not still found) of the Ramanujan-like series for 1/π^2.
Bruinier and Ono recently developed the theory of generalized Borcherds products, which uses coefficients of certain Maass forms as exponents in infinite product expansions of meromorphic modular forms. Using this, one can use classical results on congruences of modular forms to obtain congruences for Maass forms. In this note we work out the example of Ramanujan's mock theta functions f and ω in detail.
Using a modular equation of level $3$ and degree $23$ due to Chan and Liaw, we prove the fastest convergent rational Ramanujan-type series for $1/π$ of level $3$.
We give an explicit version of the Ramanujan-Petersson Conjecture for Hilbert Modular Forms, and deduce the "Ramanujan" property for certain cubical complexes. We reinterpret the results in terms of Communication Networks. The work will appear in the proceedings of a NATO conference on "Applications of Algebraic Geometry to Coding Theory, Physics, and Computation", which took place in Eilat, Israel, February 25 - March 1s 2001, to be published by Kluwer.
Ramanujan in his second notebook recorded total of seven $P$--$Q$ modular equations involving theta--function $f(-q)$ with moduli of orders 1, 3, 5 and 15. In this paper, modular equations analogous to those recorded by Ramanujan are obtained involving his theta--functions $φ(q)$ and $ψ(-q)$ with moduli of orders 1, 3, 5 and 15. As a consequence, several values of quotients of theta--function and a continued fraction of order 12 are explicitly evaluated.
Ramanujan influenced many areas of mathematics, but his work on q-series, on the growth of coefficients of modular forms, and on mock modular forms stands out for its depth and breadth of applications. I will give a brief overview of how this part of Ramanujan's work has influenced physics with an emphasis on applications to string theory, counting of black hole states and moonshine. This paper contains the material from my presentation at the meeting celebrating the centenary of Ramanujan's election as FRS and adds some additional material on black hole entropy and the AdS/CFT correspondence.
We use properties of modular forms to prove the following extension of the Ramanujan-Mordell formula, \begin{align*} z^{k-j}z_p^{j}=&\frac{p_χ^{k-j}-1}{p_χ^{k}-1}F_p(k,j;τ)+ \frac{p_χ^{k}-p_χ^{k-j}}{p_χ^{k}-1}F_p(k,j;pτ)+z^{k} A_p(k,j;τ), \end{align*} for all $ 1 < k \in \mathbb{n} $, $0 \leq j \leq k$ and $p$ an odd prime. We obtain this result by computing the Fourier series expansions of modular forms at all cusps of $Γ_0(4p)$.
In this paper we prove theorems related to the Ramanujan-type series for $1/π$ (type $_3F_2$) and to the Ramanujan-like series, discovered by the author, for $1/π^2$ (type $_5F_4$). Our developments for the cases $_3 F_2$ and $_5 F_4$ connect with the theory of modular functions and with the theory of Calabi-Yau differential equations, respectively.
We construct local charts for the ramified cusps of the Hilbert modular variety of level $Γ_1(\mathfrak{c},\mathfrak{n})$. This allows us, following closely M. Rapoport and C.-L. Chai, to construct arithmetic toroidal and minimal compactifications of these modular varieties. Some applications to modular forms are given. See our joint work with J. Tilouine for other applications.
We define formal vector bundles with marked sections on Hilbert modular schemes and we show how to use them to construct modular sheaves with an integrable meromorphic connection and a filtration which, in degree 0, gives to us a $p$-adic interpolation of the usual Hodge filtration. We relate it with the sheaf of overconvergent Hilbert modular forms.
We use Rankin-Cohen brackets for modular forms and quasimodular forms to give a different proof of the results obtained by D. Lanphier and D. Niebur on the van der Pol type identities for the Ramanujan's tau function. As consequences we obtain convolution sums and congruence relations involving the divisor functions.
Re presenting the traditional proof of Srinivasa Ramanujan's own favorite series for the reciprocal of $π$ :\begin{equation}\frac{1}π = \frac{\sqrt{8}}{9801} \sum_{n=0}^{+\infty} \frac{(4n)!}{(n!)^4} \frac{1103 + 26390n}{396^{4n}} \; \text{,}\end{equation}as well as several other examples of Ramanujan's infinite series. As a matter of fact, the derivation of such formulae has involved specialized knowledge of identities of classical functions and modular functions.
We compute the tautological ring for a Hilbert modular variety at an unramified prime. The method generalises that of van der Geer from the Siegel case.
We construct one parameter families of overconvergent Siegel-Hilbert modular forms. In particular, for any classical Siegel-Hilbert modular eigenform one can find a rigid analytic disc centered at this point, on which an infinite family of classical points with varying weights accumulates at the center.
We exhibit three double octic Calabi--Yau threefolds over the certain quadratic fields and prove their modularity. The non-rigid threefold has two conjugate Hilbert modular forms of weight [4,2] and [2,4] attached while the two rigid threefolds correspond to a Hilbert modular form of weight [4,4] and to the twist of the restriction of a classical modular form of weight 4.
Recently Lachterman, Schayer, and Younger published an elegant proof of the Ramanujan congruences for the partition function $p(n)$. Their proof uses only the classical theory of modular forms as well as a beautiful result of Choie, Kohnen, and Ono, without need for Hecke operators. In this paper we give a method for generalizing Lachterman, Schayer, and Younger's proof to include Ramanujan congruences for multipartition functions $p_k(n)$, and Ramanujan congruences for $p(n)$ modulo certain prime powers.
We recall first the analytic theory of the Hilbert modular varieties of level $Γ_1(\mathfrak{c},\mathfrak{n})$ and their compactifications. We construct arithmetic toroidal compactifications of the universal Hilbert-Blumenthal abelian variety (and of its fiber products), over the compactifications of the Hilbert modular variety constructed by the first author. We give several applications related to Hodge theory, Hilbert-Jacobi modular forms and Hilbert modular forms of half-integer weight.
