The main objective of this paper is to prove the monodromy conjecture for the local Igusa zeta function of a quasi-ordinary polynomial of arbitrary dimension defined over a number field. In order to do it, we compute the local Denef-Loeser motivic zeta function $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)$ of a quasi-ordinary power series $h$ of arbitrary dimension over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero from its characteristic exponents without using embedded resolution of singularities. This allows us to effectively represent $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)=P(T)/Q(T)$ such that almost all the candidate poles given by $Q(T)$ are poles. Anyway, these candidate poles give eigenvalues of the monodromy action of the complex of nearby cycles on $h^{-1}(0).$ In particular we prove in this case the monodromy conjecture made by Denef-Loeser for the local motivic zeta function and the local topological zeta function. As a consequence, if $h$ is a quasi-ordinary polynomial defined over a number field we prove the Igusa monodromy conjecture for its local Igusa zeta function.
We take another look at the so-called quasi-derivation relations in the theory of multiple zeta values, by giving a certain formula for the quasi-derivation operator. In doing so, we are not only able to prove the quasi-derivation relations in a simpler manner but also give an analog of the quasi-derivation relations for finite multiple zeta values.
Given a hypersurface, $X$, prime $p$, the zeta function is a generating function for the number of $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ rational points of $X$. Until now, there is no algorithm for computing hypersurfaces with ADE singularities. Scott Stetson and Vladimir Baranovsky provided an algorithm with Mathematica for the ordinary double point case. In this paper, I go over a Sage algorithm for computing the zeta function of a hypersurface with ADE singularities over 3-dimensional projective space. To make the algorithm more efficient, I established an equivalence between a polynomial belonging to the Jacob…
We introduce a $q$-analog of the multiple harmonic series commonly referred to as multiple zeta values. The multiple $q$-zeta values satisfy a $q$-stuffle multiplication rule analogous to the stuffle multiplication rule arising from the series representation of ordinary multiple zeta values. Additionally, multiple $q$-zeta values can be viewed as special values of the multiple $q$-polylogarithm, which admits a multiple Jackson $q$-integral representation whose limiting case is the Drinfel'd simplex integral for the ordinary multiple polylogarithm when $q=1$. The multiple Jackson $q$-integral r…
We study the distribution of the number of points and of the zeroes of the zeta function in different $p$-rank strata of Artin-Schreier covers over $\F_q$ when $q$ is fixed and the genus goes to infinity. The $p$-rank strata considered include the ordinary family, the whole family, and the family of curves with $p$-rank equal to $p-1.$ While the zeta zeroes always approach the standard Gaussian distribution, the number of points over $\F_q$ has a distribution that varies with the specific family.
Recently, Masanobu Kaneko introduced a conjecture on an extension of the derivation relation for multiple zeta values. The goal of the present paper is to present a proof of this conjecture by reducing it to a class of relations for multiple zeta values studied by Kawashima. In addition, some algebraic aspects of the quasi-derivation operator $\partial_n^{(c)}$ on $\mathbb{Q}< x,y>$, which was defined by modeling a Hopf algebra developed by Connes and Moscovici, will be presented.
The Legendre type relation for the counting function of ordinary twin primes is reworked in terms of the inverse of the Riemann zeta function. Its analysis sheds light on the distribution of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function in the critical strip and their links to primes and the twin prime problem.
In this article, we introduce a systematic new method to investigate the conjectural p-adic meromorphic continuation of Professor Bernard Dwork's unit root zeta function attached to an ordinary family of algebraic varieties defined over a finite field of characteristic p.
For primes $p>3$ we produce a new derivation of the universal $p$-adic sigma function and $p$-adic Weierstrass zeta functions of Mazur and Tate for ordinary elliptic curves by a method that highlights congruences among coefficients in Laurent expansions of elliptic functions, and works simultaneously for generalized elliptic curves defined by Weierstrass equations.
We define zeta-functions of weight lattices of compact connected semisimple Lie groups. If the group is simply-connected, these zeta-functions coincide with ordinary zeta-functions of root systems of associated Lie algebras. In this paper we consider the general connected (but not necessarily simply-connected) case, prove the explicit form of Witten's volume formulas for these zeta-functions, and further prove functional relations among them which include their volume formulas.
We construct a certain class of Arakawa--Kaneko zeta-functions associated with $GL_2(\mathbb{C})$, which includes the ordinary Arakawa--Kaneko zeta-function. We also define poly-Bernoulli polynomials associated with $GL_2(\mathbb{C})$ which appear in their special values of these zeta-functions. We prove some functional relations for these zeta-functions, which are regarded as interpolation formulas of various relations among poly-Bernoulli numbers. Considering their special values, we prove difference relations and duality relations for poly-Bernoulli polynomials associated with $GL_2(\mathbb…
Recently G. Louchard obtained an asymptotic series $\sum_{j=0}^\infty\frac{I_j}{n^j}$ for the integral $\int_0^1[x^n+(1-x)^n]^{\frac1n}dx$ as $n\to\infty$, and computed $I_j$ for $j\le 5$ in terms of values of the Riemann zeta function. An interesting feature of the computation is that the $I_j$ are first obtained in terms of alternating multiple zeta values, but then everything except products of ordinary zeta values cancels out. We obtain similar formulas for $I_n$, $6\le n\le 9$, and conjecture a general formula for $I_n$ in terms of alternating multiple zeta values. We also conjecture that…
A large family of relations among multiple zeta values may be described using the combinatorics of shuffle and quasi-shuffle algebras. While the structure of shuffle algebras have been well understood for some time now, quasi-shuffle algebras were only formally studied relatively recently. In particular, Hoffman gives a thorough discussion of the algebraic structure, including a choice of algebra basis, and applies his results to produce families of relations among multiple zeta values and their generalisations. In a recent preprint, Hirose and Sato establish a family of relations coming from …
Quasi-shuffle algebras have been a useful tool in studying multiple zeta values and related quantities, including multiple polylogarithms, finite multiple harmonic sums, and q-multiple zeta values. Here we show that two ideas previously considered only for multiple zeta values, the interpolated product of S. Yamamoto and the symmetric sum theorem, can be generalized to any quasi-shuffle algebra.
Let X be a smooth quasiprojective subscheme of P^n of dimension m >= 0 over F_q. Then there exist homogeneous polynomials f over F_q for which the intersection of X and the hypersurface f=0 is smooth. In fact, the set of such f has a positive density, equal to zeta_X(m+1)^{-1}, where zeta_X(s)=Z_X(q^{-s}) is the zeta function of X. An analogue for regular quasiprojective schemes over Z is proved, assuming the abc conjecture and another conjecture.
Sums over inverse s-th powers of semiprimes and k-almost primes are transformed into sums over products of powers of ordinary prime zeta functions. Multinomial coefficients known from the cycle decomposition of permutation groups play the role of expansion coefficients. Founded on a known convergence acceleration for the ordinary prime zeta functions, the sums and first derivatives are tabulated with high precision for indices k=2,...,6 and integer powers s=2,...,8.
Quasi-shuffle products, introduced by the first author, have been useful in studying multiple zeta values and some of their analogues and generalizations. The second author, together with Kajikawa, Ohno, and Okuda, significantly extended the definition of quasi-shuffle algebras so it could be applied to multiple zeta q-values. This article extends some of the algebraic machinery of the first author's original paper to the more general definition, and uses this extension to obtain various algebraic formulas in the quasi-shuffle algebra in a transparent way. Some applications to multiple zeta va…
For each positive integer n, we determine the set of symmetric functions f for which the congruence f(p/1,p/2,...,p/(p-1)) \equiv 0 mod p^n holds for all sufficiently large primes p. Our determination is conditional on a conjecture regarding the modulo p independence of Bernoulli numbers. In a recent work the author introduced a new truncated analogue of the multiple zeta function and investigated a class of relations among values of this function at positive integers. The question answered in the present work is equivalent to the determination of the relations satisfied by values of the corre…
We compute the special values of partial zeta function at $s=0$ for family of real quadratic fields $K_n$ and ray class ideals $\fb_n$ such that $\fb_n^{-1} = [1,δ(n)]$ where the continued fraction expansion of $δ(n)$ is purely periodic and each terms are polynomial in $n$ of bounded degree $d$. With an additional assumptions, we prove that the special values of partial zeta function at $s=0$ behaves as quasi-polynomial. We apply this to obtain that the special values the Hecke's $L$-functions at $s=0$ for a family of for a Dirichlet character $χ$ behave as quasi-polynomial as well. We compute…
We study some classical identities for multiple zeta values and show that they still hold for zeta functions built on the zeros of an arbitrary function. We introduce the complementary zeta function of a system, which naturally occurs when lifting identities for multiple zeta values to identities for quasisymmetric functions.
Let $a(1) >0$, $a(n) \ge 0$ for $n \ge 2$ and $a(n) = O(n^\varepsilon)$ for any $\varepsilon >0$, and put $Z(σ+ it):= \sum_{n=1}^\infty a(n) n^{-σ- it}$ where $σ, t \in {\mathbb{R}}$. In the present paper, we show that any zeta distribution whose characteristic function is defined by ${\mathcal{Z}}_σ(t) :=Z(σ+ it)/Z(σ)$ is pretended infinitely divisible if $σ>1$ is sufficiently large. Moreover, we prove that if ${\mathcal{Z}}_σ(t)$ is an infinitely divisible characteristic function for some $σ_{id} >1$, then ${\mathcal{Z}}_σ(t)$ is infinitely divisible for all $σ>1$. Note that the correspondin…
We study analytic properties of multiple zeta-functions of generalized Hurwitz-Lerch type. First, as a special type of them, we consider multiple zeta-functions of generalized Euler-Zagier-Lerch type and investigate their analytic properties which were already announced in our previous paper. Next we give `desingularization' of multiple zeta-functions of generalized Hurwitz-Lerch type, which include those of generalized Euler-Zagier-Lerch type, the Mordell-Tornheim type, and so on. As a result, the desingularized multiple zeta-function turns out to be an entire function and can be expressed as…
We introduce Schur multiple zeta functions which interpolate both the multiple zeta and multiple zeta-star functions of the Euler-Zagier type combinatorially. We first study their basic properties including a region of absolute convergence and the case where all variables are the same. Then, under an assumption on variables, some determinant formulas coming from theory of Schur functions such as the Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli and dual Cauchy formula are established with the help of Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions. Moreover, we investigate the quasi-symmetric functions corresponding…
We consider the series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} z^{n} (a_{n} + x)^{-s}$ where $a_{n}$ satisfies a linear recurrence of arbitrary degree with integer coefficients. Under appropriate conditions, we prove that it can be continued to a meromorphic function on the complex $s$-plane. Thus we may associate a Lerch-type zeta function $φ(z,s,x)$ to a general recurrence. This subsumes all previous results which dealt only with the ordinary zeta and Hurwitz cases and degrees $2$ and $3$. Our method generalizes a formula of Ramanujan for the classical Hurwitz-Riemann zeta functions. We determine the poles and…
Calculating multiple zeta values at arguments of any sign in a way that is compatible with both the quasi-shuffle product as well as meromorphic continuation, is commonly referred to as the renormalisation problem for multiple zeta values. We consider the set of all solutions to this problem and provide a framework for comparing its elements in terms of a free and transitive action of a particular subgroup of the group of characters of the quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra. In particular, this provides a transparent way of relating different solutions at non-positive values, which answers an open que…
At the 1900 International Congress of Mathematicians, Hilbert claimed that the Riemann zeta function is not the solution of any algebraic ordinary differential equation its region of analyticity \cite{HilbertProb}. In 2015, Van Gorder addresses the question of whether the Riemann zeta function satisfies a {\it non}-algebraic differential equation and constructs a differential equation of infinite order which zeta satisfies \cite{RHequiv}. However, as he notes in the paper, this representation is formal and Van Gorder does not attempt to claim a region or type of convergence. In this paper, we …
We present a deterministic algorithm that computes the zeta function of a nonsupersingular elliptic curve E over a finite field with p^n elements in time quasi-quadratic in n. An older algorithm having the same time complexity uses the canonical lift of E, whereas our algorithm uses rigid cohomology combined with a deformation approach. An implementation in small odd characteristic turns out to give very good results.
Motivated by a question of Rota, this paper studies the relationship between Rota--Baxter algebras and symmetric related functions. The starting point is the fact that the space of quasi-symmetric functions is spanned by monomial quasi-symmetric functions which are indexed by compositions. When composition is replaced by left weak composition (LWC), we obtain the concept of LWC monomial quasi-symmetric functions and the resulting space of LWC quasi-symmetric functions. In line with the question of Rota, the latter is shown to be isomorphic to the free commutative nonunitary Rota--Baxter algebr…
The manuscript reviews Dirichlet Series of important multiplicative arithmetic functions. The aim is to represent these as products and ratios of Riemann zeta-functions, or, if that concise format is not found, to provide the leading factors of the infinite product over zeta-functions. If rooted at the Dirichlet series for powers, for sums-of-divisors and for Euler's totient, the inheritance of multiplicativity through Dirichlet convolution or ordinary multiplication of pairs of arithmetic functions generates most of the results.
For a positive irrational number $α,$ we study the ordinary Dirichlet series $ζ_α(s) = \sum\limits_{n\geq1} \lfloorαn\rfloor^{-s}$ and $S_α(s) = \sum\limits_{n\geq1} (\left\lceilαn\right\rceil - \left\lceil α(n-1)\right\rceil){n^{-s}}.$ We prove relations between them and $J_{\boldsymbolα}(s)=\sum\limits_{n\geq1}\left(\lbraceαn\rbrace-\frac{1}{2}\right)n^{-s}.$ Motivated by the previous work of Hardy and Littlewood, Hecke and others regarding $J_{\boldsymbolα},$ we show that $ζ_α$ and $S_α$ can be continued analytically beyond the imaginary axis except for a simple pole at $s=1.$ Based on the …
We discuss a number of techniques for determining the Minkowski dimension of bounded subsets of some Euclidean space of any dimension, including: the box-counting dimension and equivalent definitions based on various box-counting functions; the similarity dimension via the Moran equation (at least in the case of self-similar sets); the order of the (box-)counting function; the classic result on compact subsets of the real line due to Besicovitch and Taylor, as adapted to the theory of fractal strings; and the abscissae of convergence of new classes of zeta functions. Specifically, we define bo…

We study the algebra MD of generating function for multiple divisor sums and its connections to multiple zeta values. The generating functions for multiple divisor sums are formal power series in q with coefficients in Q arising from the calculation of the Fourier expansion of multiple Eisenstein series. We show that the algebra MD is a filtered algebra equipped with a derivation and use this derivation to prove linear relations in MD. The (quasi-)modular forms for the full modular group Sl_2(Z) constitute a sub-algebra of MD this also yields linear relations in MD. Generating functions of mul…
We prove that a good average order on the Goldbach generating function implies that the real parts of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function are strictly less than 1. This together with existing results establishes an equivalence between such asymptotics and the Riemann Hypothesis.
We present a number of results about (finite) multiple harmonic sums modulo a prime, which provide interesting parallels to known results about multiple zeta values (i.e., infinite multiple harmonic series). In particular, we prove a "duality" result for mod p multiple harmonic sums similar to (but distinct from) that for multiple zeta values. We also exploit the Hopf algebra structure of the quasi-symmetric functions to do calculations with multiple harmonic sums mod p, and obtain, for each weight through 9, a set of generators for the space of weight-n multiple harmonic sums mod p. When comb…
In this article we review the observation, due originally to Dwork, that the zeta-function of an arithmetic variety, defined originally over the field with p elements, is a superdeterminant. We review this observation in the context of a one parameter family of quintic threefolds, and study the zeta-function as a function of the parameter ϕ. Owing to cancellations, the superdeterminant of an infinite matrix reduces to the (ordinary) determinant of a finite matrix, U(ϕ), corresponding to the action of the Frobenius map on certain cohomology groups. The parameter-dependence of U(ϕ) is given by a…
We will show that there exists a close relationship between quasi-hereditary algebras of Cline-Parshall-Scott and the rejection theory from the viewpoint of the approximation theory of Auslander-Smalo. As an application, we will solve two open problems. One concerns the representation dimension of artin algebras introduced by M. Auslander about 30 years ago, and another concerns the Solomon zeta functions of orders introduced by L. Solomon about 25 years ago. It will turn out that the rejection theory relates these two quite different problems with each other closely.
Multiple zeta values (MZVs) in the usual sense are the special values of multiple variable zeta functions at positive integers. Their extensive studies are important in both mathematics and physics with broad connections and applications. In contrast, very little is known about the special values of multiple zeta functions at non-positive integers since the values are usually singular. We define and study multiple zeta functions at any integer values by adapting methods of renormalization from quantum field theory, and following the Hopf algebra approach of Connes and Kreimer. This definition …
We derive asymptotic bounds for the ordinary generating functions of several classical arithmetic functions, including the Moebius, Liouville, and von Mangoldt functions. The estimates result from the Korobov-Vinogradov zero-free region for the Riemann zeta-function, and are sharper than those obtained by Abelian theorems from bounds for the summatory functions.
In this article we discuss the limit $p$ approaches to one of tree-level $p$-adic open string amplitudes and its connections with the topological zeta functions. There is empirical evidence that $p$-adic strings are related to the ordinary strings in the $p \to 1$ limit. Previously, we established that $p$-adic Koba-Nielsen string amplitudes are finite sums of multivariate Igusa's local zeta functions, consequently, they are convergent integrals that admit meromorphic continuations as rational functions. The meromorphic continuation of local zeta functions has been used for several authors to …
In 1900, at the international congress of mathematicians, Hilbert claimed that the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ is not the solution of any algebraic ordinary differential equations on its region of analyticity. In 2015, Van Gorder considered the question of whether $ζ(s)$ satisfies a non-algebraic differential equation and showed that it formally satisfies an infinite order linear differential equation. Recently, Prado and Klinger-Logan extended Van Gorder's result to show that the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(s,a)$ is also formally satisfies a similar differential equation \begin{equation*}\label…
We show that if $F(s)$ is a nondegenerate ordinary Dirichlet series with nonnegative coefficients and $F(k)$ is a rational number for all large enough positive integers $k$, then the denominators of those rational numbers are unbounded. In particular, our result holds for the Riemann zeta function over any arithmetic progression. These results are derived via upper bounds on associated Hankel determinants.
A representation of SL(2,Z) by integer matrices acting on the space of analytic ordinary Dirichlet series is constructed, in which the standard unipotent element acts as multiplication by the Riemann zeta function. It is then shown that the Dirichlet series in the orbit of the zeta function are related to it by algebraic equations.
We interpret the "explicit formula" in the sense of analytic number theory for the zeta function of an ordinary abelian variety of dimension g over a finite field as a transversal index theorem on a (2g+1)-dimensional Riemannian foliated space. This generalizes a work of Deninger for elliptic curves.
