We prove that the elements $A_\leq$ defined by Lusztig in a completion of the periodic module actually live in the periodic module, in the type A case. In order to prove this, we compare, using Schur duality, these elements with the Kashiwara canonical basis of an integrable module.
We study weakly symmetric special biserial algebras of infinite representation type. We show that usually some socle deformation of such an algebra has non-periodic bounded modules. The exceptions are precisely the algebras whose Brauer graph is a tree with no multiple edges. If the algebra has a non-periodic bounded module then its Hochschild cohomology cannot satisfy the finite generation property (Fg).
Let $p$ be a prime number and $k$ be a positive integer not divisible by $p$. We describe the Heller translates of the periodic Lie module $\mathrm{Lie}(pk)$ in characteristic $p$ and show that it has period $2p-2$ when $p$ is odd and $1$ when $p=2$.
Let A be a concealed canonical algebra and d the dimension vector of an A-module which is periodic respect to the action of the Auslander-Reiten translation In the paper, we investigate the union of the closures of the orbits of the periodic A-modules of dimension vector d. We show that this set is closed and regular in codimension one.
The singularity category of a ring makes only the modules of finite projective dimension vanish among the modules, so the singularity category is expected to characterize a homological property of modules of infinite projective dimension. In this paper, among such modules, we deal with eventually periodic modules over a left artin ring, and, as our main result, we characterize them in terms of morphisms in the singularity category. As applications, we first prove that, for the class of finite dimensional algebras over a field, being eventually periodic is preserved under singular equivalence o…
Let A be a self-injective algebra over an algebraically closed field k. We show that if an A-module M of complexity one has an open orbit in the variety of d-dimensional A-modules, then M is periodic. As a corollary we see that any simple A-module of complexity one must be periodic. In the course of the proof, we also show that modules with open orbits are preserved by stable equivalences of Morita type between self-injective algebras.
Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional self-injective algebra over an algebraically closed field, $\mathcal{C}$ a stably quasi-serial component (i.e. its stable part is a tube) of rank $n$ of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of $A$, and $\mathcal{S}$ be a simple-minded system of the stable module category $\stmod{A}$. We show that the intersection $\mathcal{S}\cap\mathcal{C}$ is of size strictly less than $n$, and consists only of modules with quasi-length strictly less than $n$. In particular, all modules in the homogeneous tubes of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of $A$ cannot be in any simple-minded system…
The Jacobian algebra associated to a triangulation of a closed surface $S$ with a collection of marked points $M$ is (weakly) symmetric and tame. We show that for these algebras the Auslander-Reiten translate acts 2-periodical on objects. Moreover, we show that excluding only the case of a sphere with $4$ (or less) punctures, these algebras are of exponential growth. These four properties implies that there is a new family of algebras symmetric, tame and with periodic module category. As a consequence of the 2-periodical actions of the Auslander-Reiten translate on objects, we have that the Au…
We give a proof of the periodicity of quantum $T$-systems of type $A_n\times A_\ell$ with certain spiral boundary conditions. Our proof is based on categorification of the $T$-system in terms of the representation theory of quantum affine algebras, more precisely on relations between classes of Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules and of evaluation modules.
By a result of Hemmer, every simple Specht module of a finite symmetric group over a field of odd characteristic is a signed Young module. While Specht modules are parametrized by partitions, indecomposable signed Young modules are parametrized by certain pairs of partitions. The main result of this article establishes the signed Young module labels of simple Specht modules. Along the way we prove a number of results concerning indecomposable signed Young modules that are of independent interest. In particular, we determine the label of the indecomposable signed Young module obtained by tensor…
In this paper, we describe a regular representation given by Cayley theorem for 2-crossed modules of groups and their associated Gray 3-group groupoids with a single 0-cell and equivalently cat2-groups.
Let $p$ be a prime. In this paper, we compute complexities of some simple modules of symmetric groups labelled by two-part partitions. Most of the simple modules considered here are contained in the $p$-blocks with non-abelian defect groups.
Computing the extensions between Verma modules is in general a very difficult problem. Using Soergel bimodules, one can construct a graded version of the principal block of Category $\mathcal{O}$ for any finite coxeter group. In this setting, we compute the extensions between Verma modules for dihedral groups.
Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a complete discrete valuation ring, $\mathcal{K}$ its quotient field, and $A$ the symmetric Kronecker algebra over $\mathcal{O}$. We consider the full subcategory of the category of $A$-lattices whose objects are $A$-lattices $M$ such that $M\otimes_{\mathcal{O}}\mathcal{K}$ is projective $A\otimes_{\mathcal{O}}\mathcal{K}$-modules. In this paper, we study Heller lattices of indecomposable periodic modules over $A$. As a main result, we determine the shapes of stable Auslander--Reiten components containing Heller lattices of indecomposable periodic modules over $A$.
In this article we study the vertices of simple modules for the symmetric groups in prime characteristic $p$. In particular, we complete the classification of the vertices of simple $S_n$-modules labelled by hook partitions.
Recall that an algebraic module is a KG-module that satisfies a polynomial with integer coefficients, with addition and multiplication given by direct sum and tensor product. In this article we prove that if L is a component of the (stable) Auslander-Reiten quiver for a dihedral 2-group consisting of non-periodic modules, then there is at most one algebraic module on L.
This paper studies extension groups between certain Weyl modules for the algebraic group GL_n over the integers. Main results include: (1) A complete determination of Ext groups between Weyl modules whose highest weights differ by a single root and (2) Determination of Ext^1 between an exterior power of the defining representation and any Weyl module. The significance of these results for modular representation theory of GL_n is discussed in several Remarks. Notably the first result leads to a calculation of Ext groups between neighboring Weyl modules for GL_n and also recovers the GL_n case o…
For $n\geq 5$ the natural permutation module for the alternating group $\mathfrak{A}_n$ has a unique non-trivial composition factor, being called its natural simple module. We determine the vertices and sources of the natural simple $\mathfrak{A}_n$-module over fields of characteristic 2.
A famous theorem of Nakaoka asserts that the cohomology of the symmetric group stabilizes. The first author generalized this theorem to non-trivial coefficient systems, in the form of $\mathrm{FI}$-modules over a field, though one now obtains periodicity of the cohomology instead of stability. In this paper, we further refine these results. Our main theorem states that if $M$ is a finitely generated $\mathrm{FI}$-module over a noetherian ring $\mathbf{k}$ then $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} \mathrm{H}^t(S_n, M_n)$ admits the structure of a $\mathbf{D}$-module, where $\mathbf{D}$ is the divided power alg…
The construction of all irreducible modules of the symmetric groups over an arbitrary field which reduce to Specht modules in the case of fields of characteristic zero is given by G.D.James. Halıcıoğlu and Morris describe a possible extension of James' work for Weyl groups in general, where Young tableaux are interpreted in terms of root systems. In this paper we show how to construct submodules of Specht modules for Weyl groups.
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
In this paper we study the vertices of indecomposable Specht modules for symmetric groups. For any given indecomposable non-projective Specht module, the main theorem of the article describes a family of p-subgroups contained in its vertex. The theorem generalizes and improves an earlier result due to Wildon in "Vertices of Specht modules and blocks of the symmetric group", J. Alg 323 (2010) 2243--2256.
The author and Nakano recently proved that multiplicities in a Specht filtration of a symmetric group module are well-defined precisely when the characteristic is at least five. This result suggested the possibility of a symmetric group theory analogous to that of good filtrations and tilting modules for $GL_n(k)$. This paper is an initial attempt at such a theory. We obtain two sufficient conditions that ensure a module has a Specht filtration, and a formula for the filtration multiplicities. We then study the categories of modules that satisfy the conditions, in the process obtaining a new r…
We provide an upper bound for the dimension of the maximal projective submodule of the Lie module of the symmetric group of $n$ letters in prime characteristic $p$, where $n = pk$ with $p \nmid k$.
In this paper, it is shown that the projectivity of a rational module for an infinitesimal unipotent group scheme over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic can be detected on a family of closed subgroups.
These are notes for a summer course given at the PIMS Summer School on Geometric and Topological Aspects of the Representation Theory of Finite Groups in Vancouver, July 27-30 2016.
We show that $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} {\mathrm H}^t({\bf GL}_n({\bf F}_q), {\bf F}_\ell)$ canonically admits the structure of a module over the $q$-divided power algebra (assuming $q$ is invertible in ${\bf F}_{\ell}$), and that, as such, it is free and (for $q \neq 2$) generated in degrees $\le t$. As a corollary, we show that the cohomology of a finitely generated ${\bf VI}$-module in non-describing characteristic is eventually periodic in $n$. We apply this to obtain a new result on the cohomology of unipotent Specht modules.
We introduce and study an affine analogue of skew Young diagrams and tableaux on them. It turns out that the double affine Hecke algebra of type $A$ acts on the space spanned by standard tableaux on each diagram. It is shown that the modules obtained this way are irreducible, and they exhaust all irreducible modules of a certain class over the double affine Hecke algebra. In particular, the classification of irreducible modules of this class, announced by Cherednik, is recovered.
We give a full classification, in terms of periodic skew diagrams, of irreducible semisimple modules in category O for the degenerate double affine Hecke algebra of type A which can be realized as submodules of Verma modules.
In this article, we prove that induced modules of support $τ$-tilting modules over blocks of finite groups satisfying inertial-invariant condition are also support $τ$-tilting modules.
This document contains tables with the classification of prehomogeneous modules for reductive algebraic groups with up to two simple factors due to Sato, Kimura and many others, as well as corresponding tables of the étale modules appearing in this list, determined by the author. It is intended as a convenient reference for examples of étale module for reductive algebraic group.
In this article we study support $τ$-tilting modules, semibricks and more over blocks of group algebras. Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, $\tilde{G}$ a finite group and $G$ a normal subgroup of $\tilde{G}$. Moreover, let $\tilde{B}$ be a block of $k\tilde{G}$ and $B$ a block of $kG$ covered by $\tilde{B}$. We show that, under certain conditions for the factor group $\tilde{G}/G$ and $B$, induced modules and extending modules of support $τ$-tilting modules and semibricks over $B$ are also the ones over $\tilde{B}$, respectively.
We construct a well-behaved stable category of modules for a large class of infinite groups. We then consider its Picard group, which is the group of invertible (or endotrivial) modules. We show how this group can be calculated when the group acts on a tree with finite stabilisers.
An FI-module $V$ over a commutative ring $\bf{k}$ encodes a sequence $(V_n)_{n \geq 0}$ of representations of the symmetric groups $(\mathfrak{S}_n)_{n \geq 0}$ over $\bf{k}$. In this paper, we show that for a "finitely generated" FI-module $V$ over a field of characteristic $p$, the cohomology groups $H^t(\mathfrak{S}_n, V_n)$ are eventually periodic in $n$. We describe a recursive way to calculate the period and the periodicity range and show that the period is always a power of $p$. As an application, we show that if $\mathcal{M}$ is a compact, connected, oriented manifold of dimension $\ge…
In an attempt to get some information on the multiplicative structure of the Green ring we study algebraic modules for simple groups, and associated groups such as quasisimple and almost-simple groups. We prove that, for almost all groups of Lie type in defining characteristic, the natural module is non-algebraic. For alternating and symmetric groups, we prove that the simple modules in $p$-blocks with defect groups of order $p^2$ are algebraic, for $p\leq 5$. Finally, we analyze nine sporadic groups, finding that all simple modules are algebraic for various primes and sporadic groups
We compare lower defect groups associated with $p$-regular classes and vertices of simple modules for a block of a finite group algebra. We show that lower defect groups are contained in vertices of simple modules after suitable reordering. Moreover, for a block of principal type, we show that a $p$-regular lower defect group which contains a vertex of simple module is a defect group of the block.
We determine the group of endotrivial modules (as an abstract group) for $G$ a (quasi)simple group of sporadic type, extending previous results in the literature. In many sporadic cases we directly construct the subgroup of trivial-source endotrivial modules. We also resolve the question of whether certain simple modules for sporadic groups are endotrivial, posed by Lassueur, Malle and Schulte, in the majority of open cases. The results rely heavily on a recent description of the group of trivial-source endotrivial modules due to Grodal.
It is well known that if G is a finite group then the group of endotrivial modules is finitely generated. In this paper we investigate endotrivial modules over arbitrary finite group schemes. Our results can be applied to computing the endotrivial group for several classes of infinitesimal group schemes which include the Frobenius kernels of parabolic subgroups, and their unipotent radicals(for reductive algebraic groups). For G reductive, we also present a classification of simple, induced/Weyl and tilting modules (G-modules) which are endotrivial over the Frobenius kernel G_r of G.
We describe the structure, including composition factors and submodule lattices, of cross-characteristic permutation modules for the natural actions of the orthogonal groups $O_{m}^{\pm}(3)$ with $m\geq6$ on nonsingular points of their standard modules. These actions together with those studied in \cite{HN} are all examples of primitive rank 3 actions of finite classical groups on nonsingular points.
$\imath$quantum groups are generalizations of quantum groups which appear as coideal subalgebras of quantum groups in the theory of quantum symmetric pairs. In this paper, we define the notion of classical weight modules over an $\imath$quantum group, and study their properties along the lines of the representation theory of weight modules over a quantum group. In several cases, we classify the finite-dimensional irreducible classical weight modules by a highest weight theory.
The restriction of a (dual) Specht module to a smaller symmetric group has a filtration by (dual) Specht modules of this smaller group. In the cellular structure of the group algebra of the symmetric group, the cell modules are exactly the (dual) Specht modules. The partition algebra is a cellular algebra containing the group algebra of the symmetric group. In this article, we study the structure of the restriction of a cell module to the group algebra of a symmetric group (with smaller index) and find conditions for the restriction to possess a (dual) Specht filtration.
We investigate the endotrivial modules for the Schur covers of the symmetric and alternating groups and determine the structure of their group of endotrivial modules in all characteristics. We provide a full description of this group by generators and relations in all cases.
We finish off the classification of the endo-trivial modules of finite groups with Sylow $2$-subgroups isomorphic to a semi-dihedral $2$-group started by Carlson, Mazza and Thévenaz in their article "Endotrivial modules over groups with quaternion or semi-dihedral Sylow $2$-subgroup" published in 2013.
Let K 0 (Fp GLn(Fp)-proj) denote the Grothendieck group of finitely generated pro-jective Fp GLn(Fp)-modules. We show that the algebra C $\otimes$ n$\ge$0 K 0 (Fp GLn(Fp)-proj) with multiplication given by induction functors, is a polynomial algebra. We explicit generators and their relation with Deligne-Lusztig characters.
We prove a recursive formula for the exterior and symmetric powers of modules for a cyclic 2-group. This makes computation straightforward. Previously, a complete description was only known for cyclic groups of prime order.
We construct twisting functors for quantum group modules. First over the field $\mathbb{Q}(v)$ but later over any $\mathbb{Z} [v,v^{-1}]$-algebra. The main results in this paper are a rigerous definition of these functors, a proof that they satisfy braid relations and applications to Verma modules.
An algebra with identities $(a,b,c)=(a,c,b)=(b,a,c)$ is called {\it assosymmetric}, where $(x,y,z)=(xy)z-x(yz)$ is associator. We study $S_n$-module, $A_n$-module and $GL_n$-module structures of free assosymmetric algebra.
We give a short proof of the fact that if all characteristic p simple modules of the finite group G have dimension less than p, then G has a normal Sylow p-subgroup.
Motivated by a recent result of Robinson showing that simple endotrivial modules essentially come from quasi-simple groups we classify such modules for finite special linear and unitary groups as well as for exceptional groups of Lie type. Our main tool is a lifting result for endotrivial modules obtained in a previous paper which allows us to apply character theoretic methods. As one application we prove that the $\ell$-rank of quasi-simple groups possessing a faithful simple endotrivial module is at most 2. As a second application we complete the proof that principal blocks of finite simple …
In this paper, we investigate the group of endotrivial modules for certain $p$-groups. Such groups were already been computed by Carlson-Thévenaz using the theory of support varieties; however, we provide novel homotopical proofs of their results for cyclic $p$-groups, the quaternion group of order 8, and for generalized quaternion groups using Galois descent and Picard spectral sequences, building on results of Mathew and Stojanoska. Our computations provide conceptual insights into the classical work of Carlson-Thévenaz.
While the finite-dimensional modules of the dihedral 2-groups over fields of characteristic 2 were classified over 30 years ago, very little is known about the tensor products of such modules. In this article, we compute the Loewy length of the tensor product of two modules of a dihedral two-group in characteristic 2. As an immediate consequence, we determine when such a tensor product has a projective direct summand.
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $k$ be a field whose characteristic $p$ divides the order of $G$. Freyd's generating hypothesis for the stable module category of $G$ is the statement that a map between finite-dimensional $kG$-modules in the thick subcategory generated by $k$ factors through a projective if the induced map on Tate cohomology is trivial. We show that if $G$ has periodic cohomology then the generating hypothesis holds if and only if the Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is $C_2$ or $C_3$. We also give some other conditions that are equivalent to the GH for groups with periodic cohomolo…
